We used to love coming here all the time, like weekly. However the last several months the service has been HORRENDOUS. We just went and the hostess told us to sit wherever and handed us menus. I've been here many times and missed eating here immensely! They check your temperature upon arrival and get your name and number in case of a Covid exposure which is so considerate and greatly appreciated. We started with some tea because it was chilly and we left our sweaters at home. We ordered the tempura combo, which comes with vegetables and 2 shrimps, and the stuffed jalapeños. Both were delicious! We almost always get the tempura combo but it was our first time trying the jalapeños and they did not disappoint! They were meaty and cheesy! Our server did say they can be spicier or more mild on some days, so be aware that you might now be getting the spicy or mild jalapeños you're hoping for. I enjoy mine either way, thank goodness. Our stars of the night were the Snow Mountain and the Golden State Warrior. I didn't realize there was macadamia nuts in the Snow Mountain and it was such a nice surprise! It has a lot of fish on top and everything comes together so perfectly! The Golden State Warrior has mango in it and I believe some jalapeño, I only had a couple bites of this one but it was so tasty!! Really yummy! I just ordered a simple shrimp tempura roll and added jalapeño to it. I just wish the cuts in the roll were a little thinner. But overall it was really good! Always a fair amount of folks in the evening for games and the expansive bar. The sushi rolls are huge and can be shared, not the best quality, but when you deep fry it or cover it in spicy sauces you can rarely go wrong. The wait staff are amazing and super friendly, and while it isn't fine sushi dining by any means is a fun environment with big portions and creative roll options. Monica is basically is the nicest waitress in the world and I appreciate the bar tenders enthusiasm. Locals love the spot and they have plenty of TVs to watch the games and have some decent food. We have been coming here for about 2 years and something has changed! While Ryders service was exceptional, The food quality and appearance has changed. I mainly wanted to come here because I wanted to try the Mavens Macaron Ice Cream. I had hopes for the sushi despite being inland, but I was sorely disappointed. The servings are a generous portion however the flavor and quality are sadly lacking. I ordered the dragon roll and Hawaiian roll. The Hawaiian roll was drowning in teriyaki sauce so it could be pretty much anything inside the roll and it would all taste the same. The dragon roll was heavily drenched in teriyaki sauce on the end with unagi (eel) on top while the salmon and tuna on the top of the other end were slightly dry and the cuts of tuna were hacked at haphazardly. The rolls weren't horrible, but they weren't good either. They lacked flavor (aside from the taste of teriyaki sauce) and the cuts of fish were dry and bland. The only saving point of my whole dining experience was getting the Earl grey macaron ice cream. It's a bit pricey but worth it. The texture of the macaroon is as expected, soft with a slightly crisp yet chewy and sweet exterior, and the ice cream inside is well balanced and creamy yet not overbearingly sweet. If you go here I suggest getting the ice cream then going somewhere else for food. You can also get the ice cream from the frozen yogurt shop in the same shopping center. read more

All were good. Average food meaning it wasn't anything that stands out as we got regular menu items. I don't come to Gilroy often, but I've been wanting to try this place for a while and it was pretty good. I'd say it's one of the better sushi locations in Gilroy for sure. I ordered a Long Island Iced Tea in a fish bowl, this was probably the most disappointing part of my meal. It tasted mainly of tequila with water and ice which was not really pleasant, especially as it got more watery as the evening went on. We ordered the tofu appetizer which was HUGE! I've never seen such large cubes of tofu as an appetizer, and I almost wish they made them smaller because we had to cut them in half to eat them. But they were really juicy and not dry at all. They were drizzled with this soy sauce and dried shallot shavings, really good. I recommend you get this! We also got miso soup, which was really hot and really good. Tasted regular, nothing out of the ordinary. We ordered a variety of sushi from the menu and shared it family style. They were all really good! Some of the rolls we got were the coyote roll, garlic roll, and a few with images on the menu. All the fish tasted really fresh which is the biggest thing for me, if it's "fishy" it's a big no no. The portions of the rolls were decent as well. A few of them had a bit more rice than I would've liked compared to the filling but other than that, they were really good! I found the garlic roll to be not very garlic flavored at all though. But you could see variety in all the rolls and they gave us enough to saris your our cravings. Not that the sushi here is terrible by any means, but it's not very good. The rice can be a bit mushy like supermarket sushi, which is unacceptable to me. But the quality of the fish is still okay. Food is good and prices are fair, its the service we have issues with. My complaint is the same as most patrons. Check on us constantly. The only time we see you should NOT BE when you are delivering our food! They drop it and dissappear. Never asking, "is everything ok?" or checking to see if we'd like anything else!! And, if you havent checked on us for over 5min or MORE, the first thing you ask shouldnt be, " are you ready for the check?" Service is our main reason for returning to a restaurant. Located in Gilroy, the "Garlic Capital of the World", it is easy to see why people would want to dine at a restaurant in Gilroy. Admittedly, we rarely go to restaurants in Gilroy. We live about 35 minutes away from here and if we do plan to dine out of town, we generally go to San Jose because of the wide variety of dining choices. We only went here because my teenage stepson decided to hold his graduation dinner here "on the fly", simply because he felt like sushi, and it was the best central meeting location for all the family that live in the nearby cities. It was the first visit for everyone in our party. Although I was not the person in charge of making the reservation, it seems that the restaurant was able to accommodate our party of twelve easily. The restaurant is easy to find and there is plenty of parking. Upon entering the restaurant, the first thing I noticed was that it was dark inside and there were a lot of large parties and folks that looked like they came to eat here immediately after work. We were seated right away. It was kind of tight, but we managed. We ordered appetizers, a wide variety of sushi rolls, two different bento boxes, soups, salads, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages. Pretty much everything they had to offer from their menu! I ordered the salmon and gyoza bento box and tried the appetizers. I have to say that the egg rolls and chicken karaage were overcooked and too greasy for my liking. They were beyond "golden brown" and looked like they were fried once before and refried as a reheating method. The filling inside the egg roll was soggy/overcooked and beyond recognition. I think it was mostly cabbage. However, the fresh vegetables, like green beans, broccoli, and calamari breaded with tempura, then deep fried were good. The calamari were surprisingly and pleasantly tender. I dislike chewy calamari, but their version was perfectly cooked. For the most part, I was pleased with my bento box dinner except for a couple of things. The miso soup was cold, and the scoop of rice included in my bento box was cold, old, and dry. I cook white rice at least once a week because rice is a staple food in my household since my childhood. Therefore, I would say I am proficient in cooking rice and recognizing if something is off. I really should have sent it back but at times, it was difficult to locate our server. Plus, my partner who also ordered a bento box said that his rice was the same. Therefore, no point in sending it back if the entire batch of rice was bad. The salmon included in my meal, on the other hand, was fresh and delicious and was the star. They gave a big piece too. As far as cleanliness goes, it was also a little off-putting that some of the dishes were sticky and not properly washed and dried. The customer should not be obligated to clean a dish before use. When our server was around, she was friendly and accommodating. Although it was past 7:00 pm, it was busy for a weeknight. The entire restaurant was packed. Therefore, I am going to cut her a little slack on not being as attentive. All in all, our party seemed happy with their meals. It seems their sushi rolls is where they focus most of their efforts and attention to detail. Portions are big so there was plenty of leftovers to bring home. Would I return? Maybe, but I will probably take it to go rather than dine in because if the white rice is as it was on my last visit, I would much rather prepare my own rice. read more

Looking for sushi options in Gilroy and ran across Ninja Sushi on 1st Street, and, boy was I pleasantly surprised. NS opened at 3:00 and immediately filled up, so they must be doing something right! With an extensive menu (6 pages!), you are bound to find several interesting offerings. Ordered agadashi ($7.00), Futomaki ($8.00) and two bento boxes: salmon teriyaki and chicken teriyaki ($15.00 each). The agadashi was four monster portions of dense , but fluffy, tofu in a bowl of broth, which I absolutely loved. That could have been my meal! The futomaki was super fresh and had tiny crunchy carrots which gave an interesting contrasting texture. Both bento boxes were jammed packed with generous portions of rice, salad, protein (chicken/ salmon) and another side: tuna sashimi and gyoza respectively. Both were juicy and well cooked, and the sashimi, fresh. Ninja Sushi offers a full bar with a wide selection of libations that would please any cocktail/ beer aficionado while catering to families, as well. They offer child drinks/ sodas I had never seen before. Seating at the bar (w/ several tv monitors) or tall tables is available or in the main dining room which has around 10-12 tables. If you compare Ninja Sushi to SJ's Japantown, go somewhere else. You'll do nothing but make bitter comparisons on how everything at Ninja Sushi is not as satisfying. Ninja Sushi's 2-item bento boxes ranges from 11.95 up to 13.95 and they give you less than what you may be accustomed to in Japantown. The sashimi comes with 3 thin little slices of tuna. I can demolish each in one bite. The chicken teriyaki was stale and crunchy. It could have used a little more sauce but I like everything with more sauce. The service is wonderful though.
