A new twist to Mexican tacos, worth the visit . We tried the golden beet taco, duck carnitas and cauliflower taco. Arrived at 5:50PM on a Wednesday, and was first in line. Ordered some of yelps favorite - the beet tostada, cauliflower taco with queso, and the tuna tostada. Looking back I didn't have a favorite cause all of them had too much sauce and I wasn't able to taste the individual flavors. Also my peach aqua fresca was very watered down. I gave an extra star cause they do have an option to sit inside where there's A/C, vegetarian forward friendly menu, and use of high quality ingredients (though could use better mixing of such ingredients). read more

After a couple of 'best of' lists mentioned Nixta (and a local friend mentioned that he loves the spot, and goes for brunch occasionally), I decided to pay a visit. Super cute little spot (with a sizeable amount of outdoor seating) with some amazing, non-standard taqueria eats. I was going solo, so I just snagged a seat at the bar...and then realized I was supposed to order at the counter and then get the order number table pole thingy lol - all good! The server/bartender was super helpful and mentioned that the two most popular dishes (and her favs as well) were the duck carnitas taco and tuna tostada. Sold! And the rundown: Duck carnitas taco - duck confit, salsa cruda, watermelon radish, shaved white onions, cilantro - on house-made corn tortilla (they apparently get their corn straight from Oaxaca). This was faaaaantastic. Loaded with plenty of juicy duck, one of the best corn tortillas I've had, and just gorgeous to look at. Tuna Tostada - sliced marinated yellowfin tuna cured in citrus & soy, avocado, spicy mayo, cilantro, furikake. Another gorgeously composed dish. On a tostada, it could maybe be a little tricky to eat, but oh man is it delicious. plenty of tuna and avocado, the tangy spicy mayo...marvelous. Notably, those two items are the only menu items of meat or fish, so it seems like the do specialize in veggie/vegan-centric menu items, which all sound pretty enticing as well, which sets it apart from your typical taqueria (actually the 2 guys in front of me looked over the menu, asked if there were any steak/beef options, and left shortly thereafter...their big mistake). The service was very amicable, we even got our drinks on the house due to a tech issue at the register. I do note that the prices are relatively elevated for the portion sizes. Got there around 6:45-7, waited in line for around 40 minutes and got food like around 8. The line didn't seem that long when we got there, but it was just at a standstill. There was only one cashier, but still should have been quicker. The food was good but not great. I got the duck carnitas taco, flavor was there but it was drenched in fat/oil and kept dripping so I tried to squeeze it all out. One dish that really stood out was the "beef tartare" made from beets. I actually can't believe how good this was and probably the only reason I would go back. I'm a carnivore so that's saying a lot. Also was super stingy with the rock hard chips and dip that we paid for. Literally just a handful on a plate for $6. We were all like ummm...? This has great options for vegetarians. We ordered 1 of each of their tostadas and tacos. There a pretty good size so two is probably enough for one person. We had a group of 4 sharing. The pumpkin seed dip was way better than I anticipated. Duck taco best thing we had, beet tostada was delicious but huge amount. Chorizo quesadilla was super oily from the chorizo and the enchilada with chorizo purée was interesting, probably my least favorite. There's no liquor here, just wine and beer. Their "pulque-rita" is made with pulque, which is the fermented sap of an agave plant. It was good, just different. We sat outside, right now texas is hitting triple digit weather daily so it was HOT. Wish they would if had all their fans going and the larger misting one oscillating. There were also a lot of flies, so fans would've probably helped with that too. We came here because our friend was visiting the city and is vegetarian. Had heard positive things, but was disappointed to find only outdoor seating under a tent that was not so pleasant. Food offerings seem appealing, but the cauliflower taco lacked flavor despite various ingredients of pine nuts and queso fresco. The carrot tostada combined flavors in a way that did not quite come together, but the roasted carrots themselves were quite flavorful. The highlight of the meal was the herbs sprinkled on top that were fresh, and we were told came straight from their garden. Overall, I would say it's very overpriced for what it is. They are attempting fancy tacos but it just doesn't deliver when it comes to flavor or value. Very cute little place with an interesting menu. However, my experience with the two ladies working the front register wasn't pleasant. They where snippy and wouldn't let me look at a menu while I waited in line which I thought was odd. The chips and salsa was nothing special. The salsa was overly sweet and resembled BBQ sauce. Not authentic tasting at all. I also had the sake drink, and that was very good. No complaints. Overall, I would say 2/5 stars if you're looking for a Mexican spot with great ambience, staff and flavorful food I I agree with the other reviews in driving up the road about a mile and you'll find some gems! Had a great night at Nixta Taqueria. They have a great outdoor seating area which is perfect for a hot Texan summer night! There's also the garden in the backyard which is nice to see too. You order first, then get a number, and sit wherever you like. Moving on to the food, we ordered the duck confit taco, tuna, and beet tartare tostadas. I will say that the tuna tostada was a let down. There were good flavors going on but the tuna itself was not as fresh as I would like it to be. The duck confit taco was unique but just good. There's a reason Nixta's chef has been nominated a James Beard semifinalist. Their tacos are freaking fantastic. Unlike the fusion of two very different cultures, they focus on the fusion of old world techniques and new world flavors of Mexican cuisine today. I'm a huge proponent of using heirloom ingredients, given that today's food is produced for size, transportation, looks, and yields, at the expense of flavor or nutrition. You can tell each taco is carefully crafted and with intention. The ingredients come together, and without the crutch of going overboard with oil and cheese, letting the individual ingredients shine without overwhelming its neighbors. Enchilada Potosina - Highly recommend this! Everything just came together: creamy, rich, crunchy, tangy, savory. Duck Carnitas - Duck was tender, cilantro fresh, and the turnip slightly spicy. My only knock against it would be it was a bit dry (wonder if it's because they rendered too much fat from it to use for their beans?) Breakfast Taco - Hands down the best breakfast taco in Austin. Such a classic, but at a way higher level. I'd even say the level of attention is close to Michelin-level. The fact it by default has the lacto-fermented hot sauce speaks to the need of balancing out the heaviness of the other ingredients, you'll eat this breakfast taco and be ready for more. Migas - Also a classic, their totopos (chips) are well incorporated in the taco. I think the migas at other places are inconsistent in how the chips are used. At Nixta, you don't exactly see it, but as you munch on it, you totally feel and taste its presence, and you'll realize why it's so important. At Nixta, you can tell each taco is prepared with the utmost attention and care. None of the flour tortillas that other places use, Nixta's were made right in the back. I am slightly torn between just how good Nixta's is and how approachable it is from a pricing/value perspective. It's hard to get the same depth without compromising the team, ingredients, and cooking methods. Then again the taco is a humble cultural export of Mexico, a country rich in food tradition. I'd give Nixta a 3.5 in terms of value, which means you won't find me going to Nixta as often as Veracruz All Natural, but based on all of the above, I'm determined to make sure Nixta stands out in the taco capital of the world (in this Yelper's opinion) and show residents and visitors how much more tacos can be elevated. Sometimes you queue up in a line, thinking, "surely it won't take tooooo long to dine here...." We'll, when you've got limited seating (outdoor, dirt floor, uneven), ONE 8ft grill, and a James beard award, all the well-meaning/happy servers just weren't enough for me to justify 2 hours to eat four smallish plates at an expensive price. I appreciate the Nixta historical aspect, but this lovely joint just wasn't for us. Maybe if you happen by and the line is short, I'd try. If you don't read the website you won't know how small the portions are and how high the pricing is. Each item (taco/quesadilla) is about $9-14 (no sides, the quesadilla is one corn tortilla folded in half). We didn't read the website. I found this on the GF app in the Austin rush hour so we had to make a quick decision. And when we arrived we just couldn't see paying $10/each taco so we just had one each since we were very hungry. We don't mind spending money for good food but the cost to price ratio is very high. I love that they have vegan/GF/DF options. The owner was a super nice man. My best friend and I are trying to implement a new trend called "taco Thursday" and so the obvious choice is to pick something local and not super trendy yet! We came out to nixta to try something new and fresh. This place is sitting right off an east side neighborhood and is super quaint and cute. Everything has to be ordered via counter service so I'd recommend studying the menu with your friends to be prepped and ready to go. They have a front area with tables that sit under shade and a "backyard" area with picnic tables. So to start off our taco adventure you always want to have some chips and dips, the flavor on the black beans was super rich and the light sprinkle of cheese added to the overall flavor. The salsa aspect they provide has a good heat to it and the chips are super crunchy. Up next were the tostadas and tacos. We ordered two tostadas; the tuna tartare and the squash (seasonal). The tuna was super fresh with some great flavor and in all honesty the squash with the crema was our favorite the textures and flavors were perfect! Next on the menu was the duck tacos which was one of the richer/savory items on the menu but good flavor. Lastly the dessert paletas had really good flavor, we had the coconut which was more similar to ice cream in flavor topped with crunch coconut pieces and the passion fruit for a more tart taste. THE BIG: Located in the Rosewood neighborhood of East Austin, this joint is quite literally within residential housing. Beautiful backyard dining space as well as the casual front seating. THE BLACK AND WHITE: I came here on two occasions and both were amazing. Highly highly recommend the beet tartare, something about the flavor resemble the tuna tartare (which they also have). They don't have a liquor license so they can't serve any mixed drinks, but you can get some "natural" wine (tl;dr it's alright) and sake-based mixed drinks. Otherwise, it's a fine restaurant with plenty of flavors to make you come back for the second and third bite. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall spent around $40 on 3 items (tostadas and tacos) including 2 adult beverages. A little on the expensive side but definitely a must try if you haven't gone. read more

We order majority of the tacos and they were all delicious! The tuna is similar to poke on a tostada which made it kind of difficult to eat. The duck was savory and fatty as duck should be! (Our favorite) The cauliflower had a nice crunch was season well and it's a solid vegetarian option. I liked Nixta, however I think it is overhyped. For drinks, we got the cactus fruit rita and the pulquemania pulque (guava fermented drink). Both drinks were excellent and very unique tasting. For dinner, we ordered the duck carnitas taco, tuna tostada, beet tartare tostada, and special menu item which was some sort of burrito. We felt that the burrito was nothing special. The taco and two tostadas were very good, but I wouldn't say it was the best Mexican food I've ever eaten. The biggest cons to this restaurant are that it is pretty pricey and the outside patio is a little uncomfortable if you sit at the tables with chairs. The chairs wobble between the pavement & the stones, and the backs to them are very rigid. I had to pull a cushion from the other chair to place behind my back to be somewhat comfortable. On a side note, the bathroom was very unique with the decor. The outdoor staff was also very attentive with cleaning up and asking if we needed anything extra. Food - some dishes live up to the claim of innovative and different, some seem pretty standard. Overall I give this a 4 out of 5. I loved the seasonal carrot tostada but it felt kinda on the pricier end, and the duck carnitas taco felt substantial and well worth the price. Meanwhile the tuna tostada felt like poke nachos I'd had elsewhere for cheaper. The agua fresca was $7 and way overpriced for what it was but I have to give lots of credit to the staff who immediately comped me when I left feedback on this. Service - staff who took our order forgot to give my my agua fresca and I had to go back and remind her. As a result, it felt haphazardly made and was just not good. In her defense, it was close to closing time so maybe she was just tired. However, as mentioned above, I left feedback and they were happy to comp the drink. Staff who brought out dishes were very nice and helpful in explaining what was what. Retrospectively have to give service a 5/5 because of how willing they were to make things right. Ambiance - it's an outdoor area so not much to speak about here. There's fans but that didn't help with all the flies. I'd give this a 3/5 but you can also just do takeout if you're worried about bugs or being too hot in the summer. read more

First visit to Austin and Nixta definitely was my favorite taco place during this trip. Loved the outdoor seating during a nice warm day. The vibe was very laid back and the staff were all very friendly and welcoming. I got the duck carnitas and the breakfast taco. The duck was very delicious. Very moist, well seasoned and extremely flavorful. Honestly, I don't think I would be able to eat more than one given how rich it was! The breakfast taco was also great; potatoes were cooked perfectly, seasoning was on point and I really liked their red salsa. Washed it all down with some strawberry mimosas and agua fresca. Only lost a star because the bartender was also the person taking our food order, which made the line go very slowly. I've been multiple times, and would definitely recommend it. The food couldn't be better, it's really the selling point that has me indulging with coming back every couple months. The duck carnitas, beet tartare...great dishes that I feel honored to experience each time. Also all safe for celiacs, with no wheat flour being used in kitchen and the fryer even being safe of gluten contamination. I'd happily give it a 4.5 if I could, the thing that's holding me back is that my overall enthusiasm is just a little lacking after each visit. It's pretty expensive, sometimes $40 a person after tax + tip for a full meal, like when the total comes up each time for 3 tacos it's really a "whoa" moment that makes me hesitant to invite friends here, not exactly feeling like it'd seem worth it to the average person. The patio dining experience wasn't great for being such a costly meal. Then with to-go I've had a couple issues with extensive delays. Still, if you go in knowing what to expect and want a great food experience, definitely go for it. Overall pleasant experience, however theres a couple things you should know before heading to nixta. The first thing is that when you get there you order up front, and there's quite a long line. even at 9pm we waiting for 30 minutes to get our order in. It was $75 for 2 people to get 2 tuna tostadas, a quesadilla, and a wine/beer. The back patio is a lovely space but it's not exactly comfortable. The tortillas were delicious, although the tuna couldn't used some lime. They didn't have a beef or chicken option, which I feel like would've been great. They've done a nice job with a non traditional space. Overall it was good but not great, for that price tag and hype, I was a bit underwhelmed. If you're looking to spend a pretty penny on dinner there are better fancy Mexican spots. Arriba Abajo and La Piscina come to mind. read more

I allowed my foodie friend talk me into trying Nixta. She had never dined there before and likes a sense of adventure. I, on the other hand, want reliably good food and service. We had the $90, 6-course tasting menu and what a disappointment it was. The first course was a fritter which I don't consider a course. It's like saying a slice of bread is a course. It was tasty but nothing special. the second course was hamachi and the third course was a tamal which were the best things I ate that evening, but nothing special. The fourth course was duck stock over sweet potato purée - a very odd combination. Fifth course was Wagyu beef belly which was sliced paper thin and totally unexpected. Tasty but a very small portion. The sixth course was some sort of complicated chocolate panna cotta that I could not force myself to eat. It was awful. At the beginning of the meal my dining partner ordered the rice custard to go. After we paid for the cocktails (we had to pay for the tastings menu at the time we made the reservation), she asked for her custard. Oh, they misunderstood. They thought she wanted to eat it in the restaurant. So we waited for 30 minutes for them to prepare the order to go. We finally left without the custard. I had a glass of white wine and a glass of red wine. Both were mediocre. I will not be returning. read more

Came back and ended up splurging as my girlfriend fell in love with their menu. After trying two tostadas, she's obsessed and wants to go back. Apologies for this review. I'm usually not 'that guy' absolutely gushing over a place, but this place deserves to be a special exemption. Some background: Austin has a pretty meh corn tortilla scene. I am always on the hunt for good corn tortillas and I've found a few places that fit the bill. A couple of years ago, I heard about Nixta and saw videos of Nixta's founders on a quest to not just make good corn tortillas, but to make the absolute best corn tortillas. This place has been on my wish list ever since. Two-and-a-half procrastination and one global pandemic later (thank God they made it), I finally got around to it. I've been to plenty of the places around town that have garnered wide acclaim. If I'm being honest, I didn't always see what the hype is all about. Showed up at Nixta and was pre-annoyed by the parking and the brutal summer heat. Luckily, the line was short. Unluckily, the heat kept causing their checkout system to crash so it took a good 30 minutes to order with only 2-3 customers ahead of us. We ordered and it was pretty pricey (I didn't do my homework and check the menu...just wanted to experience the tortillas). Everything about how this started had me sure that I was going to one of the overhyped/overpriced places. Against those odds, I was overjoyed by the food. When someone is this passionate about something and has the talent to articulate that passion into a dish, you get to the point that you're eating art. I know that sounds pretentious and most places where you expect that kind of experience, you see it coming from a mile away. These are tacos that you eat outside. Without the frills or trappings of a fancy joint, I had the best meal I've eaten in a while. I got the chips (wanted as much corn tortilla action as possible..this is why iI came) and they are probably the best corn tortilla chips I've ever had. The way chips and salsa are eaten, there is no reason for the chip to be memorable at all. It's a magic carpet to get salsa in your mouth. I've had OK, pretty good, and good chips. As long as the salsa is good, the chip quality didn't matter. Here, the chips are the star of the show. The black beans, avocado crema, and chipotle salsa are nice complements but they are an afterthought to the flavor and texture of these chips. On to the tacos...I had a Enchilada Potosina Taco and a Duck Carnitas Taco. My wife had an Enchilada Potosina Taco and a Cauliflower Taco. The Enchilada Potosina Taco has no business being as good as it is. The corn tortilla absolutely shined - as advertised/expected - but the variety of temperatures and textures of the ingredients were just sublime. I've had several tacos with shredded cabbage in the past, but the cabbage here is shaven so thinly that it creates a cool nest of crunch above the warm potato/chorizo puree and duck fat refried beans. Seriously, who takes this much time and effort to elevate a taco to this point? After this taco, it became apparent that I came for a meal but was going to have an experience. The Duck Carnitas Taco was just as expertly executed. This being the actual "meat" taco, I was taken aback at its simplicity compared to prior taco. Meat/radish/onions/salsa/cilantro on (of course) a god-level corn tortilla. The simplicity of the ingredients just lets the execution shine. Every texture, perfect. Again, a great contrast of temperatures between the meat and veggies. All wrapped in a tortilla that is worth every ounce of hype it has received. My wife (who does eat meat) had this to say about the Cauliflower Taco: "that is the best taco I've ever eaten". Legendary food aside, the staff was great. They are enthusiastic about the food you are getting and super friendly. Everything about this place is special. In the end, this was worth the drive and well worth the price. I'm not sure I would have come today if I knew how much I'd be paying for "tacos" & chips (~$30 per person including tip/tax). Would I come again? Absolutely. We came after seeing these tacos in an episode of Somebody Feed Phil - Austin (on Netflix). The Duck Carnitas taco was absolutely divine. It was fresh with cilantro, savory pork, and a little pickled radish and lime! It was so so tasty, that we want to visit again just for more duck tacos. It was delish, but it was pricey. At $7-$10 for a single taco, it's definitely pricier than some others you see out there. But!!! I would recommend at least going for the duck carnitas and maybe trying something else while you're there too ;p Unfortunately, I didn't get a pic of the duck carnitas taco because we ate it up before I even thought about it! it is probably for the best that I don't live in Austin as i would probably eat here ever day. In general I love Bloody Mary's, but I have fallen in love with the Micheladas here. House tomato mix and beer that adds effervescence. The chili and lime rimming the glass make this a perfect drink. words can't describe how wonderful the Pumpkin Tostada was. the texture, the combination and complexity of flavors. The green beans taco cauliflower taco were both excellent. My review is not doing this place Justice. It is so good. Just go eat there. read more
