My husband & I were in town for business & it's always my job to find us the best places to eat & No. 246 did not disappoint! First, make reservations. We ate outside on the covered porch. We both started with cocktails that were perfect. The wine list is to die for, there are bottles from cheap to pricey. The cheesy garlic bread is an absolute must!! 4 stars for a really solid Decatur Italian restaurant. My wife and I were looking to grab a bite to eat recently and decided to check out No. 246. Located off the downtown Decatur square, the reviews for No. 246 didn't quite show off how nice the venue is on the inside. We arrived in jeans and polos and felt a little underdressed for the look of the venue, but most of the other people inside were dressed similar so we fit in just fine. We didn't have reservations and had to wait about 20 minutes (per other reviews that is normal I guess), but were able to get a nice little table soon enough. We sat down and our waitress came over to say hello and tell us about the menu. She was pretty nice and insightful on the menu, but she was somewhat young and overworked (a common theme in these post-COVID times) so we didn't see her too often. That was actually ok aside from when I wanted to order a second drink, but luckily that drink (discussed below) minimized that issue. I decided to follow recommendations from the reviews and started off with a backyard old fashioned and the meatball followed by the Chicken Marsala with a side of pasta. The meatball and old fashioned came out relatively quickly. Both weren't the best I've ever had, but both were also quite solid with excellent quality and made for a nice start to the meal. A little while after my chicken and pasta came out. Boy am I glad I followed the reviews because that was a knockout dish. The portion size was almost perfect and the pasta went with the chicken and mushrooms to make quite a tasty combination. I followed-up the dish with a "Little Negroni" to finish since it was small and only $4. The drink was in fact pretty small and quite a potent Negroni. Maybe not the best drink to finish a meal with, but I'm glad I tried it. Overall, No. 246 provided us with a solid Italian experience. I visited this establishment on a Saturday evening around 8pm. It was fairly crowded in the dining room & the bar. We decided to sit on the patio & the ambiance of the outdoor area was just okay. It definitely would be spruced up. Additionally, it's very dimly lit and was hard to see the contents on the table. The menu has a nice selection of options from pasta, pizza, salads, large entrees & the drink/wine menu has a nice selection as well. The service was probably the most least appealing aspect of the restaurant. Our server was way too quiet, inattentive, and ultimately inhospitable. The drinks took over 15-20 minutes to arrive at the table after ordering. There were never any check ups on service - it was extremely basic. Unlike the drinks, the food arrived fairly quickly. We ordered the calamari, the meatball, the Burrata, the chicken parmesan, and a couple more dishes. The dishes were all just okay. The only dish we truly enjoyed was the chicken parm. It does not come with any pasta. If you decide to order pasta with the dish, it's pasta with no red sauce. It's a salt white sauce. Just strange. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant & I don't foresee myself returning. read more

This was probably more of a 3.25 or 3.5 from me. But I did decide to round up. We have other Italian restaurants that we like far more, but this was quite alright. When we got in, we had a reservation but still had to wait a while. We got some wine and cocktails that were recommended, and they were all fantastic. I really enjoyed the drinks here. For appetizers, we ordered the Meatballs and the Arancini. The Arancini was our favorite dish here. They are fried risotto balls that come with a white truffle sauce. The outside was warm and crispy, while the risotto inside was rich. Just the contrast between the crispiness and the creaminess was incredible. And the white truffle sauce is so good. The Meatball appetizer was okay. It was a good size with a nice, very tender texture. But it honestly tasted kind of generic. I would not order this again. It just didn't have enough flavor to justify the price. The pasta dishes here are HUGE. We should have shared a bowl instead of getting two separate ones. We also had a lot of leftovers that we...did not end up finishing. We ordered the Black Spaghetti and the Cacio e Pepe. I was honestly very underwhelmed by the pasta dishes. They are a thick, udon-like noodle which I personally did not like. Also, the flavors were pretty bland. We have tried several other Italian restaurants where we liked the Cacio e Pepe and Black Spaghetti more! For the Black Spaghetti, I did like the St. Cecilia and Bocca Lupo versions more. Everything about this place was incredible. It doesn't surprise me to see that getting a reservation here can be tough compared to every other restaurant in the Decatur Square. The food was genuinely to do for. From the fresh baked bread, to the authentic Caesar Salad (I usually don't even like salads), to the entrees with handmade pasta. My partner and I got the Agnoletti and the Cacio a Pepe Spaghetti, and wow. Portions aren't too big, but it was incredibly filling. The ambiance both inside and out is also fun; I love the herbs drying on the walls. We went for an early Spring dinner and sat outside and it was lovely. Service is also great; it's clearly a fine dining restaurant with well trained waiters. Giving another 5 star review for the new old-school Italian menu. Comfort, rustic-but-refined food at its best. The bread service was wonderful, with Sunday sauce instead of the old olive oil before. Had the clam pie.. it was amazing! We also ordered the chicken Marsala (thank goodness this wasn't taken off the menu!), and the tagliatelle bolognese. In my opinion, tagliatelle is the best pasta for bolognese-it was perfect. Service was great as always. We had Mike this time and really appreciate the considerate service, Mike! We ordered a Caesar salad and the meatball to start. Both were really great. Honestly one of the best caesars I've had because it was so light and refreshing. They also brought out warm bread that was good and different with the sesame seeds on the exterior. For our entrees we got the chicken marsala for one and hanger steak. Let's call this one 4.5 stars. Fantastic ambiance, delicious food, and stellar service! Try the meatball appetizer (but remember you only get one per order!) or chicken al forno. Keep in mind the menu is ala carte, so the entrees do not come with any sides. Other popular choices with those I've dined with are the scampi, the milanese, and several of the pasta dishes, including the squid ink fra diavolo. The only thing stopping me from giving this a true 5 stars is that I did take out once, and that was a 4 star experience--it was still really good, just not as delicious and satisfying as eating at the restaurant in person. read more

Visited for a second time with a gf of mine. Shes local to the Decatur area and put me onto this amazing local restaurant. First time we visited we were celebrating her birthday. We had exceptional service and they even allowed for me to bring a surprise cake earlier and delivered to our table promptly after dinner. Second time around, Im now observing a vegetarian diet and was a little crushed I wouldn't be enjoying the spaghetti and meatballs but was determined to try their black pasta! Our server was so kind and offered many options so that I may still enjoy what they had to offer. I opted for the mixed salad and was pleasantly surprised by the bountiful array of mixed greens and tangy cheesy dressing. I opted for the black pasta, but had to ask for my dish to be prepared differently than was offered on the menu { shrimp and garlic butter sauce} INSTEAD, I had a mixture of wild mushrooms and a spicy tomato sauce AMAZING! Finished off our night with a heaping slice of their tiramisu! Definitely had to give in once we saw EVERY TABLE ending their dinner with this same dessert. DID NOT DISAPPOINT CONS: - Only had one veggie filled vegetarian option, but it is not on the menu. Incredible. Finally, we've found a restaurant in the area that demands a repeat visit. We did the Chef's Counter experience for 2 ($75 / person) along with wine pairings (~$100 / person, but varies). When we arrived for our reservation, we were seated right at the counter with a view of all the action in the kitchen. Our server greeted us from inside the kitchen and explained how the evening would work, with 5 courses, everything off-menu; he checked in on us often but mainly handled explaining the origin and flavor of each wine, why he chose it for our dish, and just being awesome in general. The chef brought out each dish and explained how it was made and the balance of flavors. He told us a little more about the restaurant as well and it helped us become more invested in what they're doing at 246. They source the majority of ingredients from Georgia but import some from Italy. You can see our five (and a half) courses in the photos below, but here's a rundown of it all in one spot: *note, the photos only have one of the dishes, but we each had our own plate, sans dessert, where we split each one **Course 1 was a Mandarin orange salad, with the orange slices served on a ricotta crème, all topped with pistachios, olive oil, and balsamic. This was a unique opener and made us excited to see what came next. **Course 2 was a cauliflower steak that had an incredible crust and just amazing flavor. I don't recall everything that went into the dish, but the chef mentioned that he had hoped we wouldn't be turned off by the cauliflower. This was probably my favorite course, with deep, hearty flavors that melded together nicely. **Course 3 was a crimini mushroom pasta with breadcrumbs and (I can't remember which) grated hard cheese. All pasta is made in house, and the chef explained that while this one was made with just flour and water, they also have pastas where they include egg. This again had phenomenal flavor and was savory, hearty, and comforting. **Course 4 was the main course, an oxtail ravioli. I'd never had oxtail before, but my wife loves it. There was another ingredient inside the ravioli, but I can't recall what it was. The earthiness of the dish made this a delicious, show-stopping cornerstone of our meal. **Course 5 was dessert, and included 1) a warm, decadent brownie covered in chocolate and a crème sauce, and 2) an affogato with a chocolate biscotti. Somehow, after eating the previous 4 courses, we found room to tackle both desserts (could have had something to do with how damn great they tasted). To top things off, we received some house-made limoncello, which we had planned to order but apparently was on the house. I cannot say enough about our experience at 246. If you've got a couple hundred bucks to spare, this is a very worthy experience. Unless you're a wine lover, I think you could pass on the pairings to save some dough. We will definitely bring guests here when they come in from out of town; the Chef's Counter can accommodate 4. read more

I have a list of downtown Decatur restaurants that I want to eat at. Took advantage of a date to cross No. 246 restaurant off the list. It was a Friday night and not as crowded as I expected it to be. I arrived around 7:20 and the restaurant looked full. We had reservations, so I went ahead and was seated waiting for my date to arrive. Chris, our server for the evening was very polite, attentive & easy-going. Once I was seated my water glass was filled. And Chris introduced himself and took my wine order. Bread and olive oil were brought to the table, also. Once my date arrived, Chris came back. Answered are questions and took our orders. We had the house red wine. I liked it. I think it was a tad too dry for my date. But he still drank all of it. Lol. We both ordered the black spaghetti that comes with shrimp. During our wait, we had good conversation. A few times we had to repeat ourselves since it was a little loud. But that was fine. We still enjoyed restaurant and ourselves. Our order came out sooner than I expected. And it was a lot. Great portions for the price. The pasta is thick, tasty & quite filling. The seasoning & flavor was so good! I expected it to be spicy but it was only mildly spicy. Still good though. I couldn't eat all of mine. So I took my leftovers home and finished it off for my lunch & dinner the next day. And no, I'm not a light eater. It was a good bit of food. On the way to the restroom, I noticed that they have a patio out back. So we checked it out when we were leaving. It was very large with a ping-pong table. We went here for the first time to celebrate my birthday a few days early. As we walk in, we are shown our table and I am given a handwritten happy birthday card. I know a lot of restaurants acknowledge a birthday, but I thought the simple card showed an extra effort that I appreciated. We loved our experience and will be back in the future. One tip: review the parking map on the website as it can be a bit tricky if you've never been to the area. First, drinks were fantastic. I got the Backyard Old-Fashioned that has chocolate bitters... a strong addition to a classic drink. My wife got the Pimm's with hibiscus, which she found refreshing and tasty. We decided to split a couple of things to try. I would recommend this if you're a person who likes to share and try a variety. The waiter told us that they also do pasta portions for 1 or 2 people, which I thought was a great, accommodating option. We ordered a margherita pizza and cacio e pepe and both were A+. Loved the basil on the pie and the cacio was so buttery and cheesy! Finally, my wife talked me into the almond cake at the last second. I'm personally not the biggest dessert fan but it was very good. The candied apples were warm and a great touch. Overall, I absolutely recommend this place as a nice date night. They didn't have those plastic sheets that can come down when it rains which was unfortunate. The service was good, our server was nice and checked on us often even though it was very busy. I first ordered the pizza which had the texture I liked, however their wood fired oven was a little too strong and my pizza had a strong burnt ash taste that I couldn't get past. The server said there was nothing to combat that unfortunately. So I ordered the Cacio e Pepe as a replacement and that was cooked to perfection. It has indoor seating plus a patio out back. 246 has a cozy and comfortable feel and has homemade pasta and pizza plus great cocktails. Things I like: The food at 246 is some of my favorite Italian food in the city. Their homemade pastas are all incredible. I normally order the Spaghetti and Meatballs (don't be fooled by how basic this sounds, it's great) and the Black Spaghetti. The noodles are thick and you can tell they are made in house and fresh. For appetizers I have had the Truffle Arancini and Baked Ricotta and both were great. They also have wonderful cocktails here as well. In addition, I really love that you can make a reservation online on Opentable. So easy and convenient. Things I don't like: Nothing! I wish they maybe had some pasta specials for more variety and it may be hard to find parking on the street, but overall I've never had a bad experience at 246.
