This used to be my go-to place for dim sum every weekend. They had the best Shrimp Siu Mai, and all the other items were consistently good as well. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago, I ordered my usual items and was very disappointed. The Shrimp Siu Mai barely had any shrimp, and the meat looked old and didn't seem fresh. The other dishes tasted noticeably different as well, and not in a good way. I called to ask what had changed and was told they had a new chef. It's really disappointing because I loved coming here, but the quality is no longer the same. Sadly, I'll have to find a new go-to spot for dim sum. read more

I just got done with eating at Oc A Chay in San Gabriel Gateway. It was my chance to check out Dim Sum Box SG right next door for take-out. It's a small restaurant with limited inside eating. Menu was small with selective dim sum items. 20+ dim sum items @ $5.49 ea 3 dim sum items @ $4.99 ea Pork congee @ $7.49 ea Drinks @ $1.98 ea I marked chrysanthanum tea, but I wasn't given nor was I charged for it nor did I ask about it. All good. I got 6 dim sum items. Size was decent for the price. Chicken feet could have been more flavorful. Shrimp dumpling had thin skin with good filling. Pan fried turnip cake was good, but a bit bland... needs more seasoning. Bean curd pork rolls were tasty. Steamed custard buns were stiff, but custard cream were sweet and delightful. Egg tarts custard filling were a bit denser than I'm used to and crust was slightly dry. Overall dim sum taste was just okay. I wasn't expecting too much really. Glad I tried them. Used to love this place. They must've lost a chef or something because their Embassy bun, which was fantastic, is an inconsistent mess now. The last handful of times I've gotten it, it's been different each and every time, from overall size to volume of meat inside to even how the top of the bun looks. All of those variations were worse than what was previously standard, but today's version was terrible. Large, but soggy. More meaty than some other times but too heavy on the sauce. I used to recommend this place to friends strictly because of that bun, but definitely no more. Which is a real bummer. read more

Yes this place is small, good luck in getting the staff attention or even their eye contact... When they are scrambling around with to go orders, it's waiting hell to get any acknowledgement that you are standing IN FRONT of them. I went today and bought some takeout. They tasted different from last time; specifically, these bean curd rolls with abalone are very oily and dry. The inside stuffing didn't taste fresh. I noticed from another reviewer that their chefs had changed recently. Hopefully things will get better soon because we aren't having good Dim Sum places in SG anymore. read more

Great food ans came out quick. Alot of people coming in and out for to go orders . Very small restaurant with 4 tables only Good service and they speak English. Our bill was 50$ for 2 people . Got 1 order of Shrimp Siu Mai, 3 orders of Turnip Cake w/Dry Scallops and 1 Beef & Coriander Rice Roll. The rice roll was good. However, I did not like the texture of the other two items. The Shrimp Siu Mai could have been a little more firmer. The Turnip Cake w/Dry Scallops was a little too gooey for my taste. There are four tables available for dining. Service was very friendly. I went on a Saturday afternoon and parking was a little hectic. Probably because they share the same lot with CVS and Wells Fargo. There is additional parking on the lower level. read more

COVID-19: Social distancing is not enforced at this establishment. Some of the staff wears a mask. All customers are not expected to wear a mask. It's optional now. The staff also wears gloves when handling food. There are some hand sanitizers available for customers to use. This place is available for take outs and has some indoor seating available with no limited capacity. They are not sanitizing in between customers. COVID-19 Vaccination Proof: This establishment currently does not require proof of vaccination. While I was grabbing my food from this establishment several days ago, I asked if they had any special offers and they weren't offering any at the moment. They currently don't have happy hour. They also do not allow pets in their establishment UNLESS it's a service animal. Parking: The parking lot for this establishment is shared. Many of the parking spots are small and tight. The lot does get full very easily because it is shared with several other establishments. There is an underground parking area, but that too can be packed very quickly. I recommend street parking to avoid inconsiderate jerks opening their doors too wide and dinging your car. Food: I ordered the har gow (Cantonese shrimp dumpling). So fricken juicy, sweet, and delicious. The shrimps are huge and fresh. It's my favorite dim sum dish ever. I would highly recommend ordering this dish. Staff: The staff here are very friendly and courteous. I will admit that service is slow. I ordered to go and it took them 20 minutes to give me my food. It was only me and one dine in customer. Oh well. I had time to kill anyways. I'm not upset. But if you do come here, be prepared for slow service. They mainly do takeouts. The establishment itself is small, clean, and tidy. This is a great quick and casual dim sum spot. The dining area is small with only about four tables inside, but it's clean and perfect for a quick bite. The food is always fresh and tasty. Great value, great taste, great service, all in a little restaurant that barely fits four tables. Check out this dim sum place because our usual dim sum place was closed on a Wednesday. Our friend was visiting out of town and this was the next closest thing to us. Overall, I think the food is good, but I do think the other dim sum place I go to is better. The price here is comparable to a lot of other places, especially nowadays dim sum is getting a little more expensive than before. Wednesday at noon was not crowded at all, and service was good since there weren't too many other people. Food was made fresh for the most part, it was really hot when we were eating it. A lot of the baked goods or the fried goods were in the warmer already, so it wasn't piping hot. For some reason, parking here on a Wednesday afternoon was difficult, even though there is a large parking lot around the restaurant. I saw a sign that said after 3 PM they sell baked goods for $3.50, first come first serve with whatever is left. Usual price is about $5.50. Not sure what kind of variety is still left after 3 PM, but if I'm near the area, I would definitely check it out! read more

All the food items tastes good and even authentic. This place is suitable for to-go as there's very limited seating. The cashier lady attitude might need some improvement. I had to admit I was a bit hesitant to try a small dim sum place. Dim Sum Box SG wasn't the first choice for the day as we wanted dim sum but didn't want to drive out further. Found this place on Yelp and first initial thought coming here was that the place was small. There were about 4-5 tables but you can order to-go if you'd like. Waited for about 15 mins. Wasn't too long of a wait. Ordered their siu mai, har gow, chicken feet, steam bbq buns, shrimp rice rolls. and a few others. Everything tasted pretty good. Definitely comparable to a lot of the dim sum places around the area, maybe some better. Price wasn't too bad as I think dim sum is getting a bit more expensive nowadays but I wouldn't mind coming back to Dim Sum Box. read more

This is a to go dim sum place in a busy plaza next to the CVS. There are lots of places to visit once you get a parking space. I ordered. three dim sum dishes while dining at the Macao restaurant today. If you let them know that you will be at the restaurant, they will happily walk it over to you when the food is ready. We ordered steamed beef balls, shrimp dumplings (hai gau), and sticky rice in leaf wraps. Credit card minimum is $25. Our total was $18.16. Good thing I had a $20 bill or else we would've had to leave empty handed. There are many to go dim sum places around. I've been here 3 times now. It's not my go to but they have solid dim sum for such a small place. They do tons of take outs and only have 4 tables. I have never been disappointed with the food except for a few items such as the sticky rice wrapped in lotus which could use some more seasoning. $6.99. The usual har low, siu mai, chicken feet are good and large in size. $4.99. I recommend the congee which is loaded with 1000 year old egg and it's thicker than most congee's nearby. Service is lacking. They seem like they prioritize whoever is making the lines instead of those sitting at the tables waiting to place the order. I'm not very big on dim sum but my girls wanted to try this place out today, so I tagged along. We got shrimp siu mai, BBQ pork buns, steamed sponge cake, beef coriander noodle roll, and a 3 piece order of beef balls. Since I don't eat pork or seafood, the only things I tried were the: -Beef coriander noodle roll (which was slightly bland). -Steamed spongecake (I liked this a lot, it was really good and not overly sweet). -Beef ball was really good (I think it's their rendition of a beef meatball, except the texture was a bit hard and not as beefy-textured as I'd hoped. Flavor was good though, savory w a hint of citrus). The girls said that the shrimp siu mai and pork buns were good. Initially, we were supposed to get it to-go but the girls changed their minds and decided to eat there. Would've been cool for the food to get served in the cool bamboo steamers. The place is very small, w 4 tables that could barely fit inside. The restroom was... scary, to say the least lol!! I was so scared I just decided to hold it til we got back to the hotel. One complaint I have about this place is that you'd have to spend $25 minimum to use your credit card. Came here before 10am on a Sunday and was seated immediately. While it is a smaller space, there are four tables inside if you want to dine-in. My table ordered practically one of everything on their menu. Our favorites were the siu mai and pineapple bun filled with custard. All of the dishes tasted fresh and had a clean taste (not overly oily). I would come back solely for those pineapple buns. It had the perfect crust with a super soft and pillowy bun. A nice dim sum place in San Gabriel. Their menu is pretty similar to "yin cha" places (aka Cantonese dim sum lunch) but much more compact and cheaper that those places with dim sum trolleys. This is perfect for me because the dim sum was delicious and I didn't like busy places. Their porridge is very good and large portion. The egg tarts are very good. Dim sum was very good overall. It's not like a unique, must-try thing, just simply delicious comfort food I'd enjoy everyday. read more

This place is extremely small inside, there's only 4 tables. The food is okay, the rice noodle rolls are a bit too doughy in my opinion. I didn't mind that but when we weren't even fully done or asked for the check yet, the lady came w the check as if we were gonna run out without paying... like calm down and let me enjoy the rest of my tea first. Been to Dim Sum Box a couple of times now after hubby noticed it on his drive home from work one day...First time was an in-person to-go order, which we waited for about 15-25 minutes to get after ordering as we just dropped in to check out their menu offerings and decided to get some snacks for later. Second time was dine-in this past Sunday and they're never too busy with patrons dining in, but a lot of to-go and phone orders. I think they're good if you're looking for freshly made-to-order dim sum, but I do think they can get overwhelmed with a lot of orders as a couple of our dishes for dine-in were forgotten until we brought it to their attention. The dim sum staples of Har Gow, Siu Mai, Leek Dumplings, Bean Curd Rolls, Turnip Cake, and Shrimp Rice Rolls are all good. I also really like their BBQ Pork Pastry. I'd skip their Egg Tarts as they weren't the best IMO. They have a few tea options for dine-in (Chrysanthemum, Jasmine, Pu-Er, and GuanYin) & came out piping hot. As I stated, they were really busy with to-go orders so service could be a little slow...but I feel like you have to pack your patience for a dim sum spot like this vs. one with the carts that can give you the dishes immediately (but not as fresh!). Will be back again when we're wanting a quick dim sum fix because their prices are reasonable & they don't skimp on mustard, chili sauce or red vinegar if you need it. Private parking lot shared with other businesses in the area , Small restaurant/ takeout dim sum with 4 tables , each table seats 4 . Most of the traffic I saw while dining in were take out orders . To my surprise a friendly elder Aunty works here . She was awesome manning the front of the house by her self with agility. Disappointing taste for how the food looks. Came per food writer Kristie Hang's recommendation and was a major let down. Just because its owned/run by a chef doesn't mean it's a quality restaurant. What I ate and the issues: har gow - quintessential dim sum dish, while the skin wasn't too thick or grainy, the shrimp was grainy. The flavor was done well and sizeable shrimp, but the shrimp didn't have a crunch. siu mai - also quintessential dim sum dish, on the dry side and kind of bland. The meat quality was decent but that was it. shrimp roll - wrap too thick though smooth and the shrimp wasn't marinated. This shrimp had a crunch but was too bland. The sweet soy sauce was good but not enough to overcome the blandness of these rolls. chicken/scallop buns - dry dry dry filling. The chicken was dark due to dark soy sauce but didn't have much flavor/umami and mostly tasted of ginger. The scallop was nowhere to be found, not even a thread. tofu skin roll - mostly water chestnut filling, couldn't tell whether there was any meat in the filling. Flavor was fine but nothing memorable. spare ribs - don't recommend ordering in general at dim sum spots since the meat quality is usually low with mostly just fat/tendon, which was true here. Flavor was fine but also nothing memorable, the black bean flavor was super mild. chicken feet - well cooked but flavoring was also not memorable egg tarts - thin crust but way too undercooked, no crispiness to be found. embassy special bun - another way way way too dry dish and poor filling to bun ratio. The BBQ pork was bland and dry, absolutely no sauce. The bun was 90% bread and 10% meat, major gaps of no meat. If they're gonna skimp on meat, just make the bum smaller like the chicken bun. pineapple custard bun - also poor custard to bun ratio with about 20% custard and 80% bun. The custard had no distinct flavor just not too sweet. this bun could also be as small as the chicken bun. read more

We arrived at 11am on Saturday to get take out. All 4 table was already full and a number of people there to get take out. Even though the store is very small, all table were good size and comfortable not the kind you need to squeeze. We waited around 30 min to get our food. I can tell they are trying their hardest but there's only 2 people so had to wait. The lady there mostly speak Cantonese and seems to expect everyone to speak Cantonese because instead of saying order number in English she'd yell in Cantonese the last name a few times when an order is ready. But I guess you know this is authentic Cantonese We ordered close to 20 items and was considered a large order. They used iPad and all orders were nicely printed but they still managed to miss one item, but we didn't know till we got home. Quality of the food overall was decent. Not too greasy and felt clean. Good portion size and everything came hot. Fried stuff was nicely fried and crispy. Rice in lotus leaf was nice. It's a small intimate place with a few tables (a little over 6 tables) for dine in with a few tea selections too. Do have patience as they have only two staff members serving and taking orders over the phone. Be prepared to find street parking because parking is limited. read more
