I'm honestly not sure why this place is rated so highly. Almost everything we ordered had a very strong pork smell, and not in a normal or appetizing way. Pork Soup XLB - This had too much soup, to the point that each dumpling just sank (you can clearly see it in the photos). A well made one is supposed to sit upright and not bottom heavy. Overall, I didn't think it was better than Din Tai Fung or Seven Grams. It had too much soup, and the strong pork smell really stood out. Pan-Fried dumplings - These were ok, but nowhere near the best I've had in SoCal. Crab XLB - This was probably the biggest letdown. It was the first time I've had crab soup dumplings where the pork smell completely overpowered the crab. I could barely taste any crab at all. The crab roe noodles were also underwhelming. Compared to versions I've had in Shanghai, these were much less flavorful, and there wasn't enough crab roe to coat all the noodles. Glutinous shumai - Was acceptable, but nothing memorable. I was randomly searching for crab roe noodles on yelp and stumbled on Auntie Qiu Kitchen in Arcadia. I ordered the crab roe noodles, pan fried pork buns and spicy wonton? The crab roe noodles were really good but it was a little small in portions. The pan fried buns came out piping hot and it was filled with soup. I thought I ordered spicy wontons but my wontons came out to be wontons with sesame sauce. It wasn't spicy but I really like enjoyed the sesame sauce with the wontons. Auntie Qiu offers a wide variety selection of food, the menu was pretty extensive but I knew what to order what I got there. A friend mentioned Auntie Qiu Kitchen is their favorite restaurant in the area so I had to come check it out. We ordered pork soup dumplings, pan fried pork buns, pork potstickers, thick chowmein with beef, Shanghai rice cake with pork and pork belly noodle soup for entrees. The wrapper of the soup dumplings is a bit thicker and chewier than Din Tai Fung. The pork filling is juicy and flavorful. We really liked the noodles and rice cake. We also got coconut lava balls, osmanthus ice jelly, and sesame mochi. The osmanthus ice jelly is nice and refreshing, and not too sweet. The coconut balls and sesame mochi were just ok. Auntie Qiu is an automatic No Brainer, must-detour for Xiao Long Bao & Shen Jian Bao Lovers and everything Shanghainese. That being said. I gave everything high markers. Both Soup Based Dumplings and Pan Fried Pie/ Baos were flooded with soup. Their specific Worcester Vinegar sauces were all local to Jiangsu & Shanghai and elevated both dishes--- fully enjoyed these two items. Shanghai Braised Pork was a solid 8.5/10, Jellyfish Salad 8/10, Shanghainese Scallion oil dry noodles maintained form factor and flavor on my rig during my trip out, am I missing anything.... This restaurant is worth driving from Rowland Heights out to Arcadia for dinner. Gentlemen in the front of the house was excellent. Stellar service and interior decor fits that whole Shanghai theme really well with the 1920s Art Deco & Neoclassicim that really brought the culture there to the attention of the West as the Paris of the East. The place was clean, the server was super friendly, and we decided to switch things up and order totally different dishes from what we usually get at the Alhambra spot. I can't say enough about this place and their amazing dishes - we ordered the crab XLB, pancake egg crepe with hot dog, brown sugar glutinous cakes, salty tofu pudding, pork noodles, and pan fried dumplings. The XLB was HOT as it should be and the skin was just thick enough where it didn't break. I loved the salty tofu pudding as it's something I've never had before - it hit the spot on a rainy day. My partner enjoyed his noodles but felt it was a little too plain which may just be the style of the dish that we're not used to. His favorite was the egg pancake because of how flavorful the sauce was. They ran out of the pan fried buns when we got there so that's for next time. This place truly took me back to Shanghai, and every dish we tried hit the spot. This is their original location, and there was a wait when we arrived, so I recommend calling ahead. It's a little cramped inside but the waiter was attentive in checking on the progress of our food. We started with Wanlaoji, a drink I used to order often in China, and it was refreshing and nostalgic. The mini wonton soup was a standout. The broth tasted just like the ones I have had in Shanghai, and the tiny wontons made it comforting and hearty. We also ordered the steamed lettuce in oyster sauce, a simple but great addition to the table. The sheng jian bao was made fresh and came in a portion of four, which was perfect for sharing. TDLR: far cry from Shanghainese food in terms of flavor, but close enough for this area that enjoys fusion and gimmicky trends I went here twice to make sure it wasn't an off experience because I saw this reel from a pretty famous chef raving about this place. Maybe this really hyped my expectations due to growing up in Shanghai, but the flavor was seriously lacking both times compared to what I grew up with. The interior decoration is really adorable, although they did keep the hotpot tables from paperpot. Service was nice, but they only have 1-2 staff running around even when it's really busy so expect a wait due to the recent hype, but food does come out quickly aside from the pan fried buns (made hot). Everything we tried & my shanghainese parents, non shanghainese friends were mostly disappointed: -pan fried buns: excellent crunch, better than the ones in Flushing, NY that are similar but the dough is different from the real thing on top. Soup and meat is fine -crab roe XLB: barely crab taste and coloring -shumai: no taste compared to the real thing and pretty much all rice -hairy crab noodles: close enough if you haven't had it in years, but my mom was most disappointed in this since it's our favorite -braised pork was good in flavor but a bit tough, restaurant 99 is much better -scallop wasabi was random, but ok -osmanthus tofu had no flavor, others in the are have better -egg pancakes &sesame crueler: lack of flavor/mushy/ wouldve been fusion dishes That being said, some of my American Chinese/taiwanese friends did enjoy this spot. No outside seating. They accept cash or credit card. If you pay by cash, you get 5% off the total bill. So bring cash if you love to save a few bucks! Luckily I had cash on me LOL. Staff was okay. If they don't look at you in the eye, it's probably nerves. Do check your food order before you leave. They forgot my pan-fried pork buns. I had to go back to get them. It's okay... they're still learning. My order consists of the food items below. My daughters favorites from this place. We'll be back for more deliciousness. The restaurant is tucked away in Arcadia's President Square, in between the 99 ranch and the main food court. It's a fairly small store, so if you walk by fast you might miss it! I ordered 3 items to go: crab xiao long baos, pan fried pork buns, and shanghai pancake with sausage. My favorite was the crab xiao long bao - the skin was not too thick and had a rich crab flavor. The shanghai pancake was pretty tasty as well with its interesting ketchup/hoisin like sauce and generous egg (though the one piece of pork sausage was disappointing). We came here recently (I had forgotten we'd been here before 3 years ago) because I'd wanted to eat some Shanghainese food. Smoked Fish 燻魚: this wasn't the greatest. I guess I'm used to the one my family makes. This was a bit too sweet and too mushy for me. Salty Soy Pudding 鹹豆花: really enjoy the version here. Lots of differently textured toppings giving every mouthful, a wonderful contrast. Not overly salty either. Shanghai Rice Cake 上海抄年糕: this is what I generally judge a Shanghainese restaurants by, and it's one of my most favored comfort dishes. This version was on point flavor-wise, though, I would've loved a little more veggies in it. Lion's Head Meatballs 獅子頭: really good! I checked this place out today based on its high Yelp reviews, and I was incredibly disappointed. I have no idea why the ratings are so high. They are using inferior meat--the pork had a bad odor, and the duck tasted like a prepackaged meal that had gone slightly sour. The soup was also heavy on the MSG. We ordered the pan seared bao, crab XLB, egg pancake with fried fritter, sweet-and-sour ribs, and savory tofu soup. We liked the pan seared bao and the crab XLB. Both had a lot of juice and were very fresh. Super tasty. The sweet-and-sour ribs were also good. They didn't have a lot of meat on them ( a lot of bone ) but the sauce and the slight crispiness of the meat was great.The egg pancake with fried fritter is a pass, very filling and huge portions but there is a sweet spicy glaze I'm not a huge fan of. The wrap is also a rice noodle and egg combination, so more chewy and dense - I prefer the wrapping to be more crispy fried egg. The savory tofu soup was not my cup of tea but still enjoyable. Portions and price were good, there is a 5% discount for paying with cash. Overall pretty good experience. After I chatted with some high-level pan-fried bun restaurant owners from Shanghai, they told me that the portion of the filling is not the key. The shape is. It should be round, fully round. Auntie Qiu's fried bun matches the criteria. Okay, let's give it 5/5. The potstickers tasted no different compared to the fried buns. Only the shape is different. This is how they do it in Shanghai. Same filling and skin, just a different shape. Anyway, they're also worth 5/5. Hot and juicy. By the way, thirty years ago, not only the filling but also the dough was different for fried buns and potstickers. Last time, we tried almost all the dim sum at Auntie Qiu's Kitchen. Averaged between 4/5 and 5/5. This time, let's try some real dishes. The Oil Ring Eel Paste (響油鱔糊). What a strange name. Why not call it sizzling eel? I give it 4/5. The cooking was very good. Flavor was on point, not fishy at all. Only issue: the raw eel was overboiled during slicing. Still, worth 4/5. Braised Vegetarian Chicken (素雞澆頭): 0/5. Sorry, it's a zero. There were 3 pieces in the dish. The total thickness was barely normal, and they were chewy. WTF. Why is vegetarian chicken chewy? Shredded Pork and Snow Cabbage (雪菜肉絲澆頭): watery, not stir-fried, tasteless. 0/5. Sweet and Sour Pork Ribs (糖醋小排): 4/5. Not bad. It's not traditional cold Shanghai-style ribs. It's deep-fried and dipped. Good taste and texture. Jellyfish with Vinegar (老醋蜇頭): strange texture with strange flavor. The jellyfish was too hard and too dark in color. 3/5. Shanghai Smoked Fish (燻魚): 0/5. If I could give a negative score, it would be -100/5 or -1,000/5. We each tried one piece. Nobody could even bite it. It was too hard and sticky. The texture didn't even feel like fish. Who would pay for this? By the way, Shanghai "smoked" fish is supposed to be deep-fried, not actually smoked. Braised Pork in Brown Sauce (家常紅燒肉): 3/5. Not bad, but the pork had hair on it. Taste was good, but... hair. Sweet Fried Shrimp (油爆蝦): I was told this was also complimentary. It was obviously specially decorated. But it wasn't good. Too dry, over-fried. You couldn't feel any tenderness or juiciness at all. The shell was crispy. Auntie Qiu recommended eating it with the shell. Went looking for Chinese breakfast stuff and got what I wanted. The sweet soy milk I ordered and poured it in the cups as a drink. The beef chow mein was perfectly chewy and very tasty. Pancake with duck has just the right ratio of sauce and stuffing. It's a bit messy to eat but it was great. Salted tofu pudding is a new try for me. Not my jam because I'm used to having the tofu sweet but my friends liked it. The star of the show is the black sesame cruller which was delicious. The crueller has a nice crunch and the black sesame mochi is chewy and sweet and gooey and just all kinds of amazing goodness. I'd go back just to order that as a dessert. I honestly don't know where to start. We ordered a good amount of food. And everything came out faster than me going to the restroom. That's not a good thing. We ordered pan fried buns and they came out cold, the inside was pure mush and the crust was damp like it had sat in the kitchen waiting to be ordered. The pork XLB was completely mushy meat, like there was fillers to make up for the lack of meat. I was shocked. The crab XLB was just a little better than the pork XLB but both were bad. We also got stir fried noodles, just bland not so bad. The crab roe noodles I had high hopes for as it was a thumbs up on the menu, to be fair the sauce was good but the ratio of sauce to noddles made the dish lack in flavor. If they put a small portion of noodles I would have been able to say it was a good dish. I am utterly shocked how welly rated this restaurant is. Looking at the reviews I thought wow 321 reviews and it's 4 1/2 stars. Upon more reading and looking at profiles, most of these reviews are fake, with only one review being this spot. Came here with family since I've been craving Shanghainese food and have been curious about this restaurant since it opened. Came here during weekend for lunch. First, this place doesn't really speak English. I am conversational in mandarin and still found it hard to communicate with the owners since they spoke a different dialect. They do also offer lunch specials during weekends but seem to discourage you from ordering it. We got several items that were familiar to us. Overall the good was good and authentic, our favorite was the pickled greens with rice cake. However, they food is definitely on the oily and salty side. I think Shanghainese food tends to be a bit more flavorful, but it was a bit much for us. Food came out fast and delicious. It's very authentic shanghai restaurant. The service was good. I like the crab XLB and the braised pork with quail. The first thing that stands out is the balance of sweetness and savoriness. Braised pork is glossy and slow-cooked until the fat melts into the meat. The pan fried soup dumpling was really juicy and has a great crunch at the bottom. read more

This will become my go-to siao long bao and pan-fried bao from now on. The prices are so reasonable and the food is so tasty. We were so hungry that we forgot to take pictures until the dessert. I usually don't order dessert at a restaurant, but decided to try the Coconut Lava balls (name might be incorrect), and it was the best and happy ending :D The balls are served hot; crispy on the outside and chewy-mochi bite on the inside with not-too-sweet coconut tapioca cream. Staff are limited, but they're efficient and very pleasant. Bye bye Din Tai Fung. No more overpriced siao long bao or tiny plate of fried rice for me. read more
