Food is good and consistent. Grab a tray near the entry and get in line. Chinese food is tasty from two Combo Menus. Also, American favorites like turkey plates, French dips, and hot roast beef sandwiches. The place draws a variety of people from all walks of life. Ambience is that of a cafeteria and simple. The people serving the food are accommodating and friendly. I ordered something not on the menu and they prepared it at a reasonable price. Parking is street only. If I could give this place a zero, I would. We thought we would give this place a chance based on reviews from online. What a disappointment!! The man that served us was extremely rude and pushy. He did not say hello. He did not give us time to look at what we wanted to eat from the board. And all he kept saying was "what's your order? What's your order?" This is by far one of the worst place. And you call this Chinese food. The food was terrible. It was old and looked like it had been sitting out for a while. They don't look very sanitary either. Never once did he washed his hands. I don't even think they check the temperature of the food they have sitting out at the counter. They had this huge turkey that didn't even fit their pan that should have been keeping the turkey hot at a safe temperature. You do not want to take a chance at that place. It is very likely you will get sick. I will never recommend this place nor go back to this place again. read more

This place was not what I expected when I first walked in, but the food is amazing! There were many selections, I had the orange chicken and barbecued pork plate which I would highly recommend. I love this place. It has been ten years since I left California and I missed Noah's excellent, fresh tasting Chinese food. I happened to be in Modesto two days ago and was thrilled to see it still here!! I had almond chicken and pork fried rice, the portion was huge and delicious. Their vegetables are so fresh and you feel like you are eating GOOD FOOD. I wish I could bring them to Arizona so I could eat here all the time. My dad had carved turkey, mashed potatoes, and green beans. All excellent and served with a smile. I love this place! read more

My wife and I live in Oakdale but when we go to Modesto, which is often, we eat there when we want a good meal. We were sad to have to wait so long for them to re-do their restaurant. The food is good, fair priced and plentiful and the place is always clean. Many restaurants in this area do not know how to provide good food at good prices to their costumers but they have nailed it! I've tried to get a rating systems in this county to save us consumers grief but the county supervisors won't have it. It works wherever they have it. read more

I read all the outstanding reviews prior to coming. So I was expecting a cafeteria type restaurant, possible large crowds but the best Chinese food in the valley. Yes, it's cafeteria style seating. The owners do in fact (just like I read in reviews) come off very rude. Like the Soup Natzi on that one Seinfeld episode where customers are afraid to talk because they don't want to get yelled at. It wasn't so much the large crowd but the EXTREMELY slow service. I have never seen such slow service! There were only 3 people in line in front of us and it still took about 13-15 minutes to order and pay. I tried their famous pork and all I can say is I've had better. The noodles and rice were ok. I find it very very hard to believe a lot of these reviews. I can pick out 25+ other Chinese restaurants in the valley that are much better than this. Say what you want about the owners, but every person that walks through their front door is a $ sign. Not a bad place for lunch downtown. The chinese is a bit greasy but show me chinese that isn't. They do have sandwiches and soups as a healthier option. Atmosphere is odd for a restaurant called a Hof Brau, and many times there are long lines, so getting served can take awhile. Definitely casual. I've only tried the Chinese "fast-food". (already cooked & sitting in trays) Tasty, especially the pork, though the Asian fare is quite Americanized. The staff was very friendly & polite each time, however they're a bit rushed 'cause this place is popular. Prices are average for this type atmosphere & food. I'm used to traveling all over Asia, so the Asian staff's accents didn't bother me & they were easy to understand. Not really interested in trying the "Hof Brau" food, but I'll return for more of their Chinese food when in the area. read more

I've had fast Chinese food all over Northern California so I'd like to think I know a thing or two about these particular oriental eat outs. It's rarity to have superb customer service in a place similar to Noah's, which stands out for me. I believe the food is set at a moderate price for what you get. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever finished a full combo meal from here due to the generous portions. My favorite is the BBQ pork/sweet & sour chicken meal. Give me a diet coke and a bottle of Sriracha hot sauce and I'm a happy man. Ok, so the decor has a 80's budget feel to it and the parking can be an issue at peak times but its not a biggie. This place is crawling with huge roaches. On my way to the bathroom there was one dead roach in the hallway. I go in to the bathroom and there is a live roach running towards me and two dead in the bathroom. Not sure how this place is even still open! read more

Yes, it's called Hof Brau. Yes, it's Chinese food. The building is old and run down and I don't recommend visiting the bathrooms. They smell really weird. If you eat the Chinese food, odds are you'll be pleased. There's a lot of crappy Chinese food in Modesto. I adore Noah's Hof Brau! Best fried rice and chow mein I've ever had in the area. I do like the turkey sandwiches. However, their mashed potatoes are like old elementary school mashed potatoes, and their potato salad was a little too warm and worse than most store bought. I'm a sucker for potato salad, so I've still tried it several times. The sweet and sour chicken/pork is deep fried. I don't know why people continue to order food that is battered and then dipped in a bath of hot oil, and then come on Yelp and complain it was greasy. Oil does that. I've had the sweet and sour chicken many times and it is not like you pick up a piece and oil drips from it. It is as greasy as any other deep fried food. The chow mein is probably the greasiest food I've tried there, but it's still not over the top. The cheese fried won tons are delicious. The homemade sweet and sour sauce is delicious. The BBQ pork is amazing. Stick to the Chinese food and you should be happy. I love that all of their food is made fresh. I have seen their ingredients delivered and they are fresh vegetables that are prepared there daily. They carve the turkey right in front of you and ask you, "Light meat, dark meat or both?" I used to go every Friday and the people serving there remembered me and my order. They were excited for me when I got engaged. They have lines out the door sometimes, but they still remember me. I have been driving from Stockton to have dinner and lunch at this restaurant since 1994. I have never had a bad meal here. Their sandwiches are delicious and their Chinese food as well. New owners took over in 1997 but the quality stayed the same. read more

The food is good and the prices are great. What I really really really like is that the place is spotless, and for an old Chinese joint, that is RARE. The employees are nice and the helpings are generous. The food is not greasy or processed. They cut the turkey right off the bone in front of you, same for the ham. All of that said, the food is just good, not great. I'm sure that the primo location and low prices are what keep this place in business, which is plenty for me. I'll be a repeat customer. read more
