Been going here for years! This place was introduced to me by my bf's family. Prices are reasonable, portions are generous, and fountain drinks are super cheap too. I love their garlic chicken, deep fried asparagus and their soups are good too. My bf's mom gets the turkey lunch plate every time we go there and she says it's like having a thanksgivings meal all over. Be sure to try out this place. P.S. I went into Noah's original location down the street the first time in 1976. The location has changed and the price has increased slightly, but beyond that, the food is the same AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS with great portions. Don't go if you are looking for ambiance. This is a cafeteria style establishment. If you go for lunch, better go at 11:30 or you will wait. The line goes to the door by noon. I enjoy all of the chinese combos as well as the hot turkey sandwich--carved while you watch! Definitely one of Modesto's longest and best kept secrets! Food was very fresh and everyone was friendly. Expect a slight wait in line as much is cooked to order or in small batches. I had the sweet & sour pork, fried rice and chow mein. The batter was crisp and fresh, the sauce was good but I can see how many were asking for extra. No one seemed put out to add more. My companions had the potstickers (HUGE) and the BBQ Pork/fried shrimp combo. All was good and the price tag was very affordable. 4 stars because the bbq pork is soooo darn good! It's seriously the best bbq pork EVER! Well at least in the valley. Anyway, I enjoyed the food. Very cheap prices! I got the #20: chow mein, fried rice, sweet & sour chicken and bbq pork. Kid you not enough for 3 people. They packed the to-go plate! Now, for anyone complaining about the "cafeteria style" the place is called HOF BRAU...hof brau is exactly what you saw...cafeteria style. The only difference about this place is they serve chinese food. Most Hof Brau's stick to the traditional German food. Not complaining though, thought it was pretty darn good! I can say that it was really greasy though and I probably won't get the sweet & sour chicken again....just double sides of bbq pork! A large soda is like $1.10 ONLY! Try it!!! I don't think you will be disappointed, unless you are expecting more than what they are offering. I took my 89 year old neighbor here last night to share a plate but I noticed when I mentioned I was plate sharing the portion was much smaller (maybe to discourage this?). Then when I went to pay, I used credit and did not fill out a tip (since you basically serve yourself) and the man at the register threw a silent fit by lengthy staring at the lack of a tip on my $8.90 (meal with a soda) which made me uncomfortable but looking at the tip jar it's apparent that they rake in the tips, I just didn't feel my plate justified a tip compared to others plates. This is a simple review for me and should have been my first! I absolutely love this place!!! My first Chinese food experience and still one of the best in our town. And whatever you do, do not forget about the sandwhiches and american side dish favorites.... Whole roasted turkey, roast beef and awesome Chinese under one roof you just can't beat it! read more

The joke in town is that this place serves the best German food around. While it does offer a few sandwiches and mashed potatoes, it's 95% Chinese food. The food is decent, but a bit on the greasy side. It's cafeteria style service but the prices are incredibly low. As a result, the lines can be long during the lunch rush. Ok.... so the people in the know, KNOW about Noah's (which is what we refer to it locally). It isn't the best ambiance, but it's downtown AND it's affordable. With that said, the Asparagas Beef is AMAZING although it's seasonal. The BBQ Pork is the best around, no doubt about it. The family that owns and runs this place is work oriented, but if you go in with any regularity, they remember you! My son and I used to go there every Friday night to enjoy a dinner out (I'm a single parent, and I could actually afford to go there). It wasn't long before they knew us by sight and even when I go in alone, they never fail to ask how my "boy" is. *smile* The only Con: the bathroom smells horrible, so use only if you must.... (this has to do with the location downtown, it has no bearing what so ever on the restaurant itself). We love to "introduce" people to this place... many become "regulars" after only one try. This is by far the best Chinese food around. I am from the Bay Area, Castro Valley. When visiting my family in Modesto, I always make a stop here before heading home for some delicious Chinese food. The Hof Brau items are great as well. I left a review back in 2013, felt I needed to continue to spread the word. Love this place, can't beat it, anywhere. Best Chinese food in the valley! Love this place been coming since I was in the womb!

I've been coming here since 1985. #12 is my favorite. They give so much food that I have leftovers for at least 3 more meals. The sandwiches are piled so high that I have to remove some meat just to get my mouth around the roll. I'm basing the amount of food for take-out orders. I have never eaten in there, so I can't compare the amount of dine-in plates. read more

Noah's does have an odd set up but they have great food. I took my boyfriend there and he at the time didn't like Chinese food, and after eating there he loved their food! I don't think that anyone can dislike their BBQ Pork or Garlic chicken. Can't judge a book it's cover. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed. read more

Yes indeed, this is truly a Modesto landmark. A weird mix of Chinese and Hof Brau fare (well sort of). I've been going here on and off for about 15 years. Fortunately for my health more off than on. I admit that despite the place being a little dingy, as long as I don't think too much about possible cleanliness, the food tastes great. The problem is the after taste and the after effects.While the taste of grease and oil stay stuck to your tounge and the roof of your mouth long after you've left, you can't help but wonder how many years of your life you've paid for that tasty Chinese lunch. I'm not usually a critic based on the health aspects of food. I figure we should all know lard, oil, fat and tons of salt are not good for us, but this place is just too far out there to ignore. I've made a vow not to return. If my doctor tells me some day I only have 3 months left to live, I'll probably return for a quick lunch before checking out. Other than that, I stay away, figuring it will kill me a lot sooner than I'd want. If you must go, maybe it's best to skip the Chinese food and stick with the turkey, roast beef etc. read more

the sign says hofbrau, but its primarily a chinese food joint. and the chinese food was definately not up to par. i went in there looking for roastbeef , mashed potatoes , salad, that sort of thing. but i ended up with sweet and sour pork, chow mein, and fried rice. i couldnt stomach the pork or the noodles. the rice was ok at best. never again. read more
