Went in for lunch a day before thanksgiving for their turkey lunch plate since I knew I wouldn't have a thanksgiving dinner. I forgive the canned gravy for being canned but I do NOT forgive Noah's for serving it up lukewarm. The gravy was cold, the young man helping me boxed up my order to go and then asked if it was for here or to go.... ummm you're standing there with a styrofoam box in your hand so it looks like it's ready to go. I then had to ask for the bread that came with the meal only to cringe as he grabbed it with his bare hands and placed it on top of my receipt on the box. Yum, BPA and MSG, oh joy. What is this stuffing made of? Curd? Ya know... the Chinese food is great here and rarely I'll order their turkey plate. I must say that food being warm really helps mask the poor quality of it. If it were only a hot meal it may have been edible... but it was not. I sat at a table, ate as much of the tasteless cold food in my styrofoam box that I could stand and done. I come to this place often the food is great! They've screwed up on my order a few times but they made it right. To be honest the servers seem to be very impatient and assholes at times for lack of better words but I don't let things like that deter me. Good place, not too expensive and the place seems clean looks like a hole in the wall but good food over all. There is a guy not sure if he's owner or just a worker but he seemed a lil rude he tree my card when I finished paying and he got my order wrong and when I told him that's not what I ordered he seme mad, I said it like 3 times number 16! Not 24 lol they both sound different. Anyway the ladies were nice and they were all cleaning just being somewhat friendly. Sodas are charge for refill which is not ok in my book so get a large. The chow main and fried rice have not much in it. Not at all. The price went up. I searched new places our favorite now is China garden on coffee rd great food and alot good price. The pork fried rice & BBQ pork is the best in Modesto. I love the fresh whole turkeys they cook every day too and you can get a carton small or large to take home. The garlic chicken and chow mein are good too especially when they bring out fresh bowls during busy times. Over the years, my husband and I have tried different Chinese places throughout Modesto and they just dont compare to the Hof Brau. Ordered Teriyaki chicken combination. I was lucky that they added 2 slices of broccoli. Yes just 2!!! Why they so stingy with broccoli when it only cost a dime! The chicken was just poorly cooked! This used to be my favorite place but not anymore. Oh did I mentioned MSG? Right after eating maybe 1/4 of the meal, I started getting lightheaded and later on got a headache. The owner is not everyone's cup of tea, but they're nice enough. They're all business so don't expect them to be overly nice like you would expect at a regular restaurant. The cashier (tall guy with a beard) has always been really nice he makes up for the lack of enthusiasm we get from the guy serving the food. The food has been consistently good every time we have gone. The orange chicken and sweet and sour chicken are our favorites. The potstickers are always fresh. Get a side of sweet and sour sauce to go with them. The sauce they normally give with them is good, but salty. The restaurant has been clean every time we go in. The only thing that bugs me is no one wears gloves. They use tongs to pick up the food but it's still a little iffy. Overall it's a good place for decently priced Chinese food! read more

I have been going to Noah's Hof Brau since they opened in 1966. It was a stop when I had my downtown bicycle paper route. This was in the ground floor of the Hotel Hughson. I have not for a rival for their BBQ pork. Always receive courteous service and very good food as well as portion size. My immediate family as I grew always would join me there. When "Lou" relocated and then sold I was worried. The new owners have never disappointed me. They still continue to hold my strongest recommendation. read more

My husband has such a sense of nostalgia for Noah's Haf bra. And every couple years, I agree to try it again with him. Every time I tell myself I just ordered the wrong thing. But every single time the food is just awful. Today he picked up a couple of dinners for us and a couple of eggrolls. I had cashew chicken, pork fried rice, and some kind of noodle stuff. It tasted and looked like old gray food. I'm done here. I'm not going back. If he wants to go by himself, he can. Though he said, that food wasn't very good tonight. Ok so let me first start off by saying this Noah's Hof Brau is a very unique place, I think this place was originally a sandwich / meat carving deli and they have converted it into a cafeteria style served Chinese food place that still serves hot sandwiches and delicious cuts of meat. Their bbq pork is absoultely sensational I don't know what the hell they do to it but is absolutely addicting, my favorite thing to get is the #1 (fried rice and bbq pork) or the won ton soup with bbq pork If you are coming here to order sweet and sour pork or orange chicken you are doing yourself injustice and should probably stick to panda express, get yourself some of their delicious meat cuts and pair it up with their fried rice it is to die for! The people who own this place are hardcore chinese ,they have been working here for years and have not seem like they have missed a day of work in their life, they may come off as a bit rude but they are actually very friendly people they just tend to focus on getting people their food served and not so much bullshitting with you be careful what time of day you come here because it gets very packed sometimes read more

Love the food here, thus the 3 stars. For over a decade, we always stop by if we are in the area. But today, my friend found a piece of hair in her food so beware. My gut told me to take a pic before I told her to tell the employees, for as long as I have been coming here I thought they would act in a responsible manner; not! When she went to the counter the male that usually works the front was really defensive and denied her claim by stating, "where, where, I don't see". The lady that usually works the front heard the conversation and got involved taking out the piece of chicken that my friend was showing her. My friend not wanting to argue or cause a scene just told them forget it and returned to the table. Two mins later the lady reappears with the piece of chicken they took out saying, "look there is no hair, see". Of course there wasn't anymore. Again, not wanting to argue or deal with the defensiveness we just remained passive. So tips if you eat here. 1) Be aware while you eat your food. 2) If you find hair or anything else take a "proof photo" or it may magically disappear or be denied if you report to them. Again, food here is real good, tasty, and affordable. My goal was to let people be aware of hair/health issues. Last, owners/employees need to remember customers are always right! For we were not looking for a free handout, just a simple acknowledgement of the issue and rectification on your part if it's a consistent issue. read more

I've been a long time regular at Noah's for 15+ years. Even though I live in Seattle, every time I visit Modesto I have to make at least one stop at Noah's to get my chinese fix. They serve both Chinese and Hof Brau dishes, not your typical restaurant. I've been from west coast to east coast and everywhere I go I try to find a great chinese place. Noah's is still at the top of the list for me. Great food, I suggest the number 20. By the way, if you're a first timer there it will catch you a little off guard. You get use to the way things flow after a while. The staff speaks little english so be cool, just call out a number on the menu and you're good to go. Choose a plate that has bbq pork, you won't be sorry. Oh and if you're not taking out... be sure to grab a tray as you walk in. ;) read more

Noahs Hof Brau may not have the best bathrooms, or the healthiest foods around. But what it does have is great food, great service, and a friendly lady that works the food/register. The Chinese food is simply amazing, especially their Mongolian beef, and their BBQ pork is to die for. They do also sell other things like turkey, mashed potatoes, corn beef, and sandwiches, which are delicious in their own right but don't stand a chance against their Chinese dishes. Some people have posted that their service is rude or unfriendly. There's a certain charm to places like this: a restaurant that (presumably) employs their entire family,and with a guy who serves the food ( in that cafeteria line thing, which by the way I find slightly amusing) to you that is slightly on the tough side and doesn't take any shit from anyone. Another selling point in my eyes is the fact that they sell beer, energy drinks, and ciggaretes, and anyone who smokes knows how a cigg goes perfectly after eating heavy foods like this. At first look of the place you would never think for being downtown that they would get that much business but people line up daily for it. #24 is the BEST!!!!! I went to Noah's for the first time. Like many reviewers I noted that the place is not a classic hof brau but rather a combination Chinese take out and a cafeteria. The decor is definitely a downer. If you are eating in, you are expected to get a tray at one end of the restaurant and get in line in another in. Regulars seem to know this routine. I got the hot turkey sandwich and it brought back memories if the High School lunch line. I was halfway expecting a rude lady with a hair net to come popping out. Instead there was a very intense staff who filled my order and moved me along. They weren't pleasant or unpleasant but rather fixated on carving the meat and getting the task done. It looked like they had an assortment of Chinese cuisine and some teriyaki items. My sandwich was okay but nothing to get excited about. The price was okay but not a bargain.
