First, the food was great. It was simple, well crafted and composed of day-of fresh ingredients. It was comprable to a small hillside restaurant in Italy (I cannot think of a better complement). Purely on food, this is a "5". Issues: Like many modern restaurants, Nora has high ceilings with exposed metal rafters. Apparently most restauranteurs do not realize that this lends their restaurant to the audio quality of a stadium. Nora is no different. The design of Nora puts a fair number of the seats within the vicinity of the entrance. This makes things breezy, prone to large temperature fluctuations (weather depending) and somewhat annoying foot traffic. Service - slow. We were able to get a same day reservation (which I appreciated). This meant a 6.30pm dinner. No issue there. I mention this because the place was 25% occupied when we sat and we didn't have wine on the table for 30 minutes. I am fine with a more European timeframe for a meal, but we had two of Nora's very tasty oven fresh breads before our appetizers arrived. I like Nora. I will go to Nora again, but I am only giving it one or two more opportunities. The funny thing about Italian food is it's so simple and ingredient dependent (more so than other food). If you have any idea of what you are doing in a kitchen you can duplicate a five star restaurant with the right ingredients and a little time. Me and my wife went here last night with another couple. The atmosphere was surprising for a restaurant in a strip mall. It was nice and quaint. We started with the arancini and burratta. The arancini was a little bland. it could have used a little extra punch. The burratta was awesome. We moved to the lobster ravioli and the pappardelle. They were both excellent, but one overshadowed the other. I would not visit Nonna without ordering the lobster ravioli. It was the highlight of the evening. We finished with the pan roasted halibut and rabbit & sausage. The kitchen made a mistake and we got a serving of the veal by mistake. It was on the house, so lucky us. All of them were very good, but again there was a stand out. The rabbit and sausage were fantastic! This is another one I wouldn't pass up. My wife's favorite was the veal. Our waitress was great. She was very attentive and gave great recommendations. We had a lot of fun. It was a combination of good company, atmosphere, service, food and drink. Fantastico! Delizioso! Carino! Buonissimo!! As a total Italian-food snob, I can say that this is one of the best in the city. My date drove me up to this small restaurant in a strip mall that I never knew existed. How unfortunate for me! We walked in to a nearly packed restaurant with just a handful of tables. My first thought was, how charming! This is what restaurants in Italy typically look like - small and intimate. The pasta portions are mid-sized and pricey, but they are the perfect size for dinner and well worth the price given the quality of the food. Pasta is handmade, which to me should be required in any good Italian restaurant. My meal was amazing, as was my date's. The service was incredible. So much so, that during our meal a bus boy noticed our table was a bit wobbly. Without us even saying anything, he came right over and discretely put something under the table to fix it. I've been admiring this place from a far, well, as far as across the street at Whole Foods. We got a same day reservation and it made the list for a repeat visit. Our waiter was amazing. My lovely husband told him he likes "sweet bourbon or scotch drinks". The waiter knew his alcohol, suggested a Red Snapper and my husband was very impressed. We both ordered the Burratta with shaved baby artichokes and crostone to start. I have never had raw artichokes before. This was well seasoned with a touch of olive oil, lemon and salt and I was in heaven. The waiter also informed us that the chef got his hands on a whole hog, which they roasted over the weekend. The menu was featuring some of the results in the form of Cappelletti of roasted Berkshire pork and house-made ricotta with fennel pollen lemon butter. This was SO amazing, my husband asked to speak with the Chef to personally thank him. This dish alone is a reason to return. It was fantastic, like, Babbo Batali fantastic. For dessert we shared a lemon panna cotta with blueberry compote. It was light, creamy and comforting. It was really something special. A friend took took me to lunch the other day at Nonna and it was delicious. We had the best olives I have ever eaten at a dinner table. The appetizer was a wonderful cheese and bread concoction and the iced tea was very tasty. I had a hot Chicago style Italian sandwich and my friend had the Porchetta sandwich both were excellent. The space is a little tight and small but it was nice not to be eating lunch in a noisy establishment. Definitely a place to hit up if you are in the area. read more

What a find this place is!! I've been driving by Nonna for a couple of years and never noticed it. Then, one afternoon after lunch at Whole Foods with my hubby Leo Z., we went for a walk and were wondering what exactly "Nonna" is . . . This is a FABULOUS Italian restaurant. FABULOUS!! Small and inconveniently located on the edge of Highland Park it's easy to miss. The menu changes daily so let me just tell you about our experience: I thought we were being put off when I asked for a 6:15 pm reservation and was told we could be seated at the bar. Okay, fine. When we got there, we were warlmly greeted. Our places at the bar were already set up (love!). The bartender served us for the evening and we enjoyed his special martini, a basil lemondrop YUM! We started off with the fried seafood mix . . . very nice! After that I had a beet salad and Leo Z. had a minestroni type soup. Extremely delicious. For the main course, I had pasta with clams and Leo Z. had a raviolo, which is a giant ravioli stuffed with house-made ricotta and at the end they crack an egg over the top. Dear Yelpers, don't miss this little gem of a restaurant. Looks like it's the best-kept secret in Highland Park! You'll probably need to make reservations well in advance. Although the food was good I would not go back. I made a reservation in October to celebrate my daughter's 30th birthday on December 19th. When we arrived we were seated in front of the door on a night when the temp was around 20. I asked to be moved to the main dining room and was told by the manager that when we made our reservation our table was randomly selected and the dining room was reserved for "regular" patrons that request a certain table. Cute little place that serves authentic Italian - love it. We started with the Margherita Pizza - wood fire oven, so perfectly thin and crispy crust. I was already sold just on the app. It was a tagliatelle pasta (I believe -- it was an off menu item) with an arrabbiata sauce. I wish there was a less cliché word for AMAZING!!! The food here was magnificent. I came here with a work group and was absolutely blown away by the flavors of their food. For starters, the group I was with ordered Brioche crostini with Maine lobster, butter, rosemary and Iberico pancetta, Fried green heirloom tomatoes with tonnato mayonaisse, Brussels sprouts and honey nut squash with pancetta and horseradish & the White clam pie...holey moley! I probably could have made an entire meal out of the lobster brioche, it was so buttery and decadent. I never would have ordered anything with clams on it ever, let alone a pizza, but good gracious was it delicious! For the main course I ordered Ravioli of Maine lobster and the Red Snapper with capers, brown butter and sunchoke vellutata. The pasta dishes can be ordered as a main dish or as a smaller side-dish type portion. When I was debating over my pasta side one of the women at my table said that the lobster ravioli "tasted like the sea" and she couldn't really explain what it meant, but when I tasted it, I knew. It had just the right amount of saltiness and the lobster inside of the pasta tasted so fresh! The best part, for me anyway, was that it was served in a broth, not a heavy cream sauce. The red snapper was out of this world! It was tender and perfectly cooked, but the sauce...OH THE SAUCE!!! I could easily have embarrassed myself by licking the bowl clean, but I was with colleagues and I have an image to uphold. As if this wasn't enough to send me straight into a food coma, then came desert. I had the Praline Nougatine Semifreddo with Pistachios & Acacia Honey. There are hardly words. It was creamy, crunchy, sweet and chilled to perfection. I wish I could tell you the name of the delicious wine I was served with dinner, however, after briefly gazing at the wine menu, I told our waiter, Sergio, to bring me "the cab". I know, I know, I panicked, it was overwhelming! However, for a little night cap, I definitely recommend a shot of the Limoncello. It's a sugary, lemony gumdrop of a drink. So why, might you ask, did I give this restaurant a 4/5 stars? I probably could not afford to go here on my own unless it was for an incredibly special occasion! Went here with a group of friends last week for restaurant week and, despite being asked to wait in the small bar area for a half hour after our reservation time, the food and service was quite excellent. The majority of us ordered the lobster ravioli, which was delicious (though not as pillowy and heavenly as other reviews on here would lead you to believe). I'm not sure if the campaccio entree is on their regular menu (and I can't say I have ever ordered veal at restaurant before....), but it was topped with a mushroom sauce of some sorts that was overpowering. The burrata, squash blossoms & tomato appetizer was divine -- I am admittedly a sucker for good burrata cheese any day.... Though the sticky toffee pudding did not quite meet the ooey-gooey UK standards I am used to, the panna cotta was absolutely delicious. Not sure how likely I am to go back here in the near future (on a student budget...), but definitely a great hidden-corner, higher-end, intimate Italian restaurant to try. read more

At first we thought the place might be closed, as it looks very dark from the outside and the sign is not lit. But we were able to find a parking spot right up front. Charming inside with a relaxing vibe. Huge wood fire oven sits at the back of the main dining room, filling it with gentle warmth and glow. Came in without a reservation, on Thursday night, and there was one open table available. Four of us (and a baby) were seated immediately. They were not really set up for children, as they did not have any highchairs, although they were very welcoming and did not make a fuss about us bringing in a baby. I really wouldn't recommend bringing kids as the environment is not really suited for them. However, we were with a VERY calm, well-behaved little girl, so it was no problem for us. Our waiter immediately brought us a light and airy "puff" of bread right out of the huge wood fire oven. They serve it on a wooden board with olive oil and fresh olives. We started out with the Insalata tri-colore. Just the right amount of salame, mozzarella and fresno chilies to give it a little kick. The lobster ravioli was completely heavenly. It is the reason I am taking time to write this review. The freshest lobster I have ever had, in perfect homemade raviolis, in a light buttery sauce that can only be described as divine. We actually dipped our bread in the sauce after the ravioli was gone. It was THAT good. I only had a small taste of the Gnocci alla Bolognese, but I enjoyed it. The Ricotta pizza and the Salame Toscana pizza were also delicious, especially the crust. Hands down, Lobster Ravioli for the win. Being dessert people, we got a little crazy with dessert. We ordered Ricotta e Pere, Pecan Semifreddo, Gelato Artigianale and an Olive Oil cake. WOW. They were all so unique and delicious it was difficult to choose a favorite. Looking at the menu, I would not have ordered the Pecan Semifreddo, just because I had no clue what it was going to be like. Our waiter suggested it, and it turned out to be the favorite. We are all vegetarian and maybe that is why the food wasn't great but Italian food is generally vegetarian friendly and a good chef should be able to create flavorful veggie dishes. The pizza was good, the bread excellent, the Gnocchi was over-salted and lacked flavor as did the pasta dish - I think it was the Casoncelli. Out of the two desserts - one was excellent (the toffee pudding). The restaurant was buzzing and had a great vibe but it just wasn't worth the trip for us because of the food. read more

Remember that credit card commercial a while back about the couple having a night out at the fabulous new restaurant, being served "elf food", and then having to raid the store later because they were still hungry? Well this may have been that restaurant... My husband and I elected to dine here for Restaurant Week and overall were pleased with our experience. This was our first time dining here so we weren't really sure what to expect, but based on the reviews and our recent trip to Italy we were looking forward to the opportunity. Ambiance: As mentioned by previous reviewers Nonna is located in a shopping strip across from Whole Foods. It's rather small inside with a separate bar and restaurant area. Inside the décor was clean and modern which was very tastefully done but didn't provide for the cozy or romantic atmosphere that you might expect. We mostly saw older couples there and most people were dressed casually. Service: Service was great. Our waiter was attentive and very familiar with all of the menu items offered. The entire staff appeared to be very polished and operated well as a team - water was refilled promptly, dirty dishes cleared, etc. Food: Overall the food was very good. Shortly after being seated, we were brought a plate of "bread" (as well as olives) that more closely resembled pizza crust. It was warm, airy, and highly addictive! For our first course, we selected the Summer Squash Sformatino and the Squash Carpaccio. Both arrived quickly and were gorgeous to look at. The Sformatino was very different but delicious - it was the clear winner of the two. The squash dish was fresh and very light, but didn't really stand out. For our main courses my husband ordered the Market Fish with tomatoes and cream peas and I went with the Melanzane al Forno (similar to eggplant parmesean but without the breading). Now I am not a hearty eater by any means, but I was shocked at how small the portions were! The fish was honestly smaller than a deck of cards! Granted it was absolutely delicious, but there are probably very few people that would be satisfied with a dish that size. The flavors were great though and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The eggplant dish was a slightly larger portion but again, no where near what you would normally see. The red sauce was great though and balanced out the eggplant quite well. It was simple dish but absolutely excellent. For dessert we went with the Sticky Toffee Pudding and the Panna Cotta. Again, both were exceptionally small portions and I can't say that I was overly thrilled with either (though I think they both largely depend on personal preference) Prices: Since we dined here for Restaurant Week I can't really speak to the prices of the regular menu. I will however note that the price for a glass of wine is very high here with most options running around $12. While the food was good, I really was disappointed at the portion sizes. Since it was Restaurant Week maybe our experience differed a bit from what they normally offer? I think I'd be a bit hesitant to return (especially since we had to have a snack a bit later!) but we really did have a nice time and I'm glad we gave it a shot! read more

After wanting to go here for years, I've now been here twice in two months. Why have I not made it here sooner? Oh right, because typically I hate making reservations. The pasta is amazing. Lobster ravioli in a delicate butter broth is worthy of the hype. I didn't think another pasta dish could top that but the tortellini of porchetta with butter, sage and Parmigiano left me incredibly disappointed that I only ordered the mid-course portion. I skipped over the starters but those are fabulous as well. I was lucky to be there on a night when they had fresh burrata and it was the best I've ever had along with Dough in San Antonio. The grilled heart of romaine with roasted pancetta, avocado and Parmigiano was unique and tasty...and definitely enough for two people. The salumi plate had my boyfriend swooning with the generous selection of prosciutto, speck, soppressata and finochietta. So why only four stars? The food is five for sure. The service could be better and I'm not a big fan of the space. It's very noisy inside, a bit cramped and not what I would expect from a restaurant with food of this quality. It's enough to distract a bit from the experience. The menu changes frequently (with exceptions for a few staples) so while you might be bummed that you cannot have that incredible dish you had last time, you can discover something new on each visit. Food: *Lobster Ravioli - K and I ordered this to split as an appetizer. Our waiter brought it out in 2 separate bowls for us, which I thought was very nice. The ravioli was cooked perfectly. The broth was buttery and subtle to not overpower the ravioli. The lobster was seasoned perfectly to bring flavor to the dish, which would have been bland had it not been seasoned this way. (Sounds like a 'duh' concept but you'd be surprised how bland lobster ravioli can be and is masked with sauce on top). *Red Winter Wheat Penne al ragu Bolognese - Waited suggested I sub the penne for tagliatelle pasta since I'm not big on penne. The pasta was great but the bolognese was not what I expected. I'm used to bolognese with sauce; this was more just ground beef mixed with pasta. It was good, not great and not what I expected. *Chitarini with clams and squid in Fra Diavalo sauce - pasta was made with squid ink, which was unique and tasty. Fiance enjoyed his dish but said he still liked New York Pizzeria's Fra Diavalo dish better [sometimes we just like normal over fancy dishes :) ] Service was great. Our waiter was friendly and helpful. Overall, we enjoyed our dinner. I kept in mind that this may be how authentic Italian could be - not overly saucy. My husband and I recently moved from the northeast and wanted to try something that reminded us of Italian food back home --homemade pasta with a cozy, but happening ambiance. I give this restaurant 2 stars: Ambiance: 2/5. I expected to have dimmed lighting and an ambiance that would be hipper (we saw a guy walk in w/a cowboy hat and boots). Might be typical for Dallas, but trying to be agnostic of location here. Worse, though, was the manager talking to a table next to ours and having his behind in our face due to the close seating. It took him 10 mins to realize what he was doing and didn't even apologize. Food: 2.5/5. The food was not what we expected. Best part of the dinner was the complimentary flat bread. The mozarella di bufala pizza was soggy and the cheese was falling off. My husband ordered the ravioli and it was NOT al dente -- mushy, overcooked, and drowning in the buttery sauce. I ordered the gemelli pasta and that too was overcooked and mushy. Service: 2.5/5 We didn't get a chance to order desert as the waiter just handed us the check for the evening. It's tucked away in a strip mall and a bit hard to find unless you're looking for it since the sign doesn't light up at night. The interior is very cozy with 2 small dining rooms and a bar. The waiter was quite helpful and very polite. For our appetizer, we shared the pork ribs which were divine. The cauliflower garnish was particularly tasty and I wish there was more on the plate. The meat on the ribs just fell off the bone and succulent. For my appetizer, I had the quail stuffed with risotto. The quail was slightly overcooked but otherwise quite tasty. It's not the largest portion but plenty for most people. My partner had the gemelli with spicy lamb ragu. At first, you can't really taste the spice but once you eat a few bites with the oily sauce at the bottom of the dish, there's a really nice spicy aftertaste. Personally, I wish it was more spicy but that may be personal preference. For dessert, we shared the torta with gelato and we both agreed that the torta was very dry and lacked sweetness. It definitely was not the greatest way to end the meal and I'd advise against that particular dessert for future diners. Overall, it was a good but not great meal. Wonderful food with ... uhh, OK service. Drink prices are high. We went to Nonna during OU-Texas football weekend. Like many have commented, the Lobster ravioli was great ... fresh, sweet tasting lobster in a ravioli pasta. I had the veal chop and it was very nice as well. The puffed bread was nice and hot and tasty. The wine recommendation they gave to my wife was excellent. Food prices were a little high, but if service is good and attentive, it can be worth it. But service was a little slow ... took 10+ minutes to get a drink after we ordered it. Same thing on refills. When we were there, the temperature in the place was very cold. My wife's phone, a Samsung Galaxy s4 has a built in temperature gauge. It gave a reading for Nonna at 66 degrees ... tolerable, but with the overhead air blowing non-stop directly on us, it was chilly and uncomfortable.When I commented to them that it was chilly, they did turn it off for a little while. I tried one of their house specialty drinks ... the Summer Gin. Made with Hendricks Gin, cucumber, club soda, and I think, Simple syrup. Fairly simple. It was good, but to me, not worth the $14 for a small drink in an Old Fashioned low-ball glass. Took mom here for her birthday. The pork meatball appetizer was really good so I thought we were off to a great start. Unfortunately, it went downhill from there. The grilled romaine salad was ok. The entrees were a big letdown. No way my tiny(4-6oz?) sliver of veal saltimbocca was worth $28. Especially when there was so much breading that the dish was dry and I couldn't taste the veal. My mother's pasta was significantly better than mine but for $22 I can get the similar quality pasta at Patrizios or Pregos for nearly half the price. Ultimately she ended up with a dry gooey lump of pasta in the center of her plate. She was cutting hunks of it off with her fork. Not good. Total bill came to $160($133 + 20% tip). I don't have a problem with the price if the portion and flavor of the entrees were more in sync with the price. I would've been totally cool with paying $28 for a small portion had the taste been out of this world, but it wasn't so I felt ripped-off. Not that it was an awful meal but we both decided if given the choice we probably wouldn't come back. Svc was good. I loved every minute of our experience here! The space is relatively small, but there was a lot of energy. I ordered a Basil Lemonade the second I opened the menu and it was fab. I had one more until I switched to wine with the second course. The menu is the perfect size and not overwhelming, and they list primary sources for the menu - you know I love a local/seasonal menu! We did it up and ordered one of each course (I forgot to mention it was an anniversary dinner, so why not). Each course was delicious. And given where we were, we let the waiter take the lead and it was so worth it! The clientele. Actually a pretty good mix. Definitely could tell you were in Dallas (and maybe HP), but we are after all:) Dress was dressy casual, but dressed up jeans would work too. The service. Amazing. Our waiter was so great. I could tell he did have a lot of tables, so there was some waiting, but it didn't bother me. In fact, I wish I could remember his name because I would ask for him again. I love Nonna. It has become one of my favorite restaurants in Dallas. I really enjoy the menu. Not too much but not too little, a perfect balance to select from. Every time I have eaten at Nonna the appetizers have all been different. The salads are great and refreshing, but they also have slightly heavier options to choose from. For dinner, I highly recommend going with a pasta dish because they make it all from scratch. The lobster ravioli is awesome. When the desert menu comes I am a huge fan of the sticky toffee pudding...I felt like I was eating one from England. My wife and I recently went to Nonna with our 3 yr old with some trepidation. After all, when we called to make a reservation, they were very clear that they had no high-chairs or booster seats. Every review stressed the small dining room and busy kitchen. As expected, all the tables were occupied and from the looks of the clientele, it was clear that this was no suburban tex-mex restaurant where kids are welcome and anything goes - the kind of place we used to frequent before kids and the kind we felt we were no longer welcome at. All I can say after the meal is that our daughter woke up the next morning and asked when we could go back. The service was excellent and at no time did we feel that we were being rushed. Our waiter assured us a few times that the kitchen would be willing to make something off the menu for our daughter. As for the food, the prosciutto with figs we had as a starter was excellent as was my braised short ribs. The selection of wines by the glass was small but adequate. read more

Top Twenty Pizza in Dallas area. Probably the most authentically Italian pizza in town. The wood fired crust is perfectly blistered and charred. The texture is both crispy and chewy. The tomato's are fresh and brings the signature authentic taste. Can't wait to go back. read more

We found this gem during restaurant week - glad we did! The lobster ravioli is as good as everyone says - in a light broth rather than a super creamy sauce, which was perfect. Almost a Lobster Dumpling soup. Soaked up everything with their wonderful fresh bread. The wait staff was very friendly, and helped us find a wine that paired well with our meals. Although we made a reservation, still waited more than 20 minutes, certainly didn't off to a good start. Service was extremely slow. Appetizer was too salty, and empty water glasses were never filled. The dinner tasted pretty good but not spectacular for that price. Went to Nonna's for an improptu night out. We got the last table in the restaurant due to a cancelled reservation and felt lucky. We had fast and attentive service, from a waiter who was willing to share his honest thoughts on the menu, something I always appreciate. He directed us towards a castelmagno cheese appetizer that was fantastic. We also took his advice on a homemade stuffed pasta with black trumpet mushrooms. Also amazing. Hmmmm... Its okay. Not sure why there's such a hype. The environment inside is small and nice. The service is decent. Their puffy pita bread for the table was nothing special. Their pastas were overall very average and small portions. I like their sister restaurant much better. Glad we came to try it but Don't think we'll be back. Overall, a lukewarm place. read more
