I got hungry on the drive down to Monterey, so I decided to get off the freeway in the city of Marina and look for a quick lunch. I ended up at the Noodle Bar on Reservation Road, a hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese place that seemed like a good bet for a fast lunch. Vietnamese restaurants are usually quite efficient, so I figured that I wouldn't have to wait too long for my order to be fulfilled. Once i had sat down and looked over the menu, a waiter promptly took my order, which consisted of a "Spring Roll" (the non-fried variety that most Vietnamese restaurants call a "Fresh Roll"), the Chili and Lemongrass Chicken with Steamed Rice, and a Pina Colada Smoothie (without the boba).
As I had hoped, my food began to land on my table within a few minutes of me placing my order. Unfortunately, the food itself left something to be desired. This was especially true of the Fresh Roll, which came out first. This roll was stuffed mainly with rice noodles, bean sprouts, and lettuce, so it was fairly bland; it did not include any basil or mint leaves, which are often added to Fresh Rolls to provide a punch of flavor. The roll did contain tiny bits of dried-out pork and a couple of very thin slices of boiled shrimp, but their amounts were so meager that neither of them contributed much to the roll's overall flavor. As for the chili and ground peanut dipping sauce that they served on the side, it was so watered down that it hardly had any flavor of its own. I don't know if their Fresh Rolls are always this poorly executed, but I do know that this one was definitely skippable.
The Chili and Lemongrass Chicken with Steamed Rice came out next. The appearance of this dish was a bit sloppy, as both the stir-fried chicken and the rice seemed to have been slung onto the plate in a hurry. However, the flavor of the chicken was perfect, with minced ginger, chili, and lemongrass giving it a very authentic taste. Unfortunately, the chicken was also slightly overcooked, making it a bit chewy. The dish was still fairly good, as there was enough sauce in the chicken to keep it moist, but the texture could have been better. The Pina Colada Smoothie came out with the chicken and was delicious, but it is something that is hard to mess up.
I do appreciate how hard it is to keep a family-run restaurant like this going, and it's the type of establishment that I am loathe to give a low rating to. However, on the basis of the food that the restaurant delivered on this visit, I would reluctantly have to give it a rating of 2/5 stars. Perhaps they were having a bad day, read more
