Excellent Thai food in a cozy and atmospheric setting, 5 stars all around! Cash only so be prepared for that and they let you bring your own bottle of wine which according to their website you do not have to pay to have uncorked, but there is a $0.75 cent per person recycling charge which is no big deal - imagine, you bring a $10 bottle with you instead of paying $20+ for the same bottle at another restaurant... I will take the recycling fee! As far as food goes, we got the crispy veggie spring rolls which were absolutely delicious; great flavor on the filling and perfect crispiness of the roll! My husband got Pad Thai and I got the Pad See Ew and both were excellent. I cannot wait to come back here for the lovely atmosphere, delicious food and very reasonable prices! Updating the original review as we went there on Friday because after writing this review, I just had to go back for more! We got the same menu items listed above but also added in the Chiang Mai Curry which is essentially Khao Soi which was tasty, but the other two dishes shined brighter. First, the service was INCREDIBLE (from the host, to my server, to the busser)! I REALLy liked the ambiance too! The Street Noodles #1 was absolutely MIND-BLOWING (and the crispy tofu [which I had instead of the chicken]) was cooked to PERFECTION! My favorite part: I was in-and-out of there in less than 30 minutes! Noodlehead is cash-only, but there is an ATM on-site. Pretentious, overpriced, uncomfortable, anachronistic. We went to Noodlehead on recommendation from a local friend. We were incredibly disappointed. The food was fine. It wasn't great, but it wasn't bad. Our server was excellent. The atmosphere was TERRIBLE. It was cold, crowded, and poorly designed. It's not confusing how to provide adequate and comfortable seating. They clearly chose looks over use. While our server was great, overall service wasn't. The cash only situation has to go. At this point, choosing cash only is making a statement that customer experience comes last in your priorities as a business. Eating here was a low point. Pittsburgh is such a fun town, but this place ain't it. read more

I think Noodlehead deserves respect for the low prices they've held for so many years, and always being the number one Thai spot in Pittsburgh. However, they've raised most of their prices considerably in the past few years, and in terms of how good their food is -- it's good, but there are other Thai places in Pittsburgh that can compete with them. With that in mind, is it worth waiting 2 hrs to get a spot at Noodlehead? I don't think so, there are many other places you can head over and get an equally delicious meal of Pad Thai, and even other Thai dishes that Noodlehead does not serve. However, the culture around Noodlehead is great, and people even go sometimes just to challenge themselves with the level 5 (and secret 6+) spice levels to see if they can do it. Always a fun hangout spot, and there is also good ice cream in Shadyside next door. read more

My toxic trait is that I compare every bowl of noodles to this fire, flame $12.50 plate at noodlehead & nothing compares. This is my favorite place for noodles in Pitt & tbh everyone I've ever gone with loves it too. I've never had something I didn't like here, ever. Our favorites are Pad Kee Mao - wide noodles in a garlicky spicy sauce, Street Noodle - acidic fresh & fried chicken to die for, Chaing Mai Noodles - coconut curry deliciousness, and Pad See Yew - again with those delish wide noodles this is sweeter than the Kee Mao. This place is cash only (there's an atm inside) and byob. You can't make reservations & they'll only seat you once your full party is there but for good reason this place is quick service, affordable and impossible to beat. It's definitely a casual vibe, but I think the interiors are really cute especially for quick service. If you're one of the few who haven't gone, you are in for a treat! Incredibly consistent and scrumptious every time. We got takeout recently after having too many holiday leftovers. Happy to drive the 30 minutes into the city just to bring this meal home. Sometimes a friend will drag you to a place and you are glad they did. I mean I wasn't kicking and screaming because I was hungry but was hesitant about the food. Boy I was wrong. I have had a lot of Asian meals in my life in many cities and countries and this restaurant would rate near the top. Not only did I enjoy my meal, but I made sure to dip into other plates that were within reach on our table. It is a good thing I have long arms. If I had a few drinks in me I might have wandered around the restaurant sampling other patrons meals. Well maybe the thought of being banned from here was the motivation of why not to do that. The best news is I recently left my last girlfriend which frees me up to visit the area more often, which allows me to try more of the menu. Of course I will invite my friend and her family so I have more options at meal time. read more

I took myself on a little date here yesterday and sat outside. It was SO nice. I've been here a few times before, but I have to say it's really growing on me. Years and years ago, it was not my favorite place, but now that I know what I love on their menu, it'll keep me coming back. It's cash only, but there's an ATM in the back with a $2.50 fee. Menu prices are more than reasonable. Things I love: -Pork belly steamed buns (so flavorful & delicious) -Pad see ew (ORDER IT WITH THE CRISPY CHICKEN!) -Pad Thai (ALSO ORDER SITH THE CRISPY CHICKEN) Yinz NEED that crispy chicken in your life. This is a no frills type restaurant, but honestly the best Thai food I've had. The restaurant is nicely decorated and inviting inside and the staff is friendly and attentive. Food comes out quickly and is reasonably priced. This is a cash only establishment, which is mildly inconvenient these days, but there is an ATM on site just in case you forget to grab some cash before going. I knew I had to give this place a try when I visited Pittsburgh. With 1.4k reviews and an average of 4.5 stars, I had high expectations. I'm happy to say that this place exceeded my high expectations! After a long drive from Buffalo, we were starving so we ordered takeout- street noodle 1 and 2. There was a pretty long line for takeout and they're only allowing one customer inside at all times. Street noodle 1 consists of flat noodles with fried chicken while street noodle 2 consists of egg noodles with shrimp tempura. I would say the first one is more subtle but both equally as good. I ordered mild spice but would've ordered medium in hindsight. For $20, you get two huge orders so I'm a happy gal! read more

Yum! This place is a Pittsburgh staple... if anyone tells you to go to Primanti's when visiting Pittsburgh, give them a judgmental stare and walk straight to Noodlehead instead. I love Noodlehead so much! I used to think it was overrated when I first dropped by the place but I found a dish that highkey changed my life haha. My go to dish for both my and my roommate back then was the Pad See Yew Spice level 2! I feel like a little bit of spice always elevates the dish these days and spice level 2 in my opinion is the perfect balance of having a kick but not having that kick destroy your taste buds HAHA. This spot has a very small menu but some of the best thai noodles I've ever had. I tried the Chiang Mai curry, see yew, and the thai fried chicken. I highly recommend the Chiang Mai curry noodles. It comes with cooked and dried egg noodles - I loved the mix of textures! The curry was also full of flavors and just so yummy! The see yew and thai fried chicken were really good as well but did not impress me as much as the curry noodle. I really liked that you get to pick a spice level between 1-5. I picked 2 for both noodles and it was the perfect amount of kick for me. I'd say if you're not great at handling spice, keep it below 3. The food here is also so cheap & came in good portions. Friends and I came here for dinner and we got seated immediately. I got the street noodles 2 and they were really good. However, I do wish there was more shrimp meat in the shrimp tempura. I took a bite of my friend's pad see ew and it was also really good! The lemongrass honey iced tea was so delicious (ask for lime to squeeze in it, it was a game changer!!). One of my favorite places for some Thai noodle dishes! Love the atmosphere of the place and it's always super popular! If you come at an off time you'll be able to be seated no problem otherwise you may have a little bit of a wait. The street noodle with the chicken is my favorite and very nostalgic! Still the best Thai food in Pittsburgh for a great price. Was shocked to find that they could seat our party of 8 immediately upon arrival on a Sunday night around 7pm. Ordered my favorite dish Sukothai. Love the combination of flavors and textures. One star docked for our server who gave us the check and then avoided us for 15 minutes while conversing with another server behind the bar. I tried paying up front but that wasn't allowed either. Notable Pittsburgh staple in Shadyside. All the dishes are great, can't really go wrong with ordering here - they offer so many yummy noodle dishes with a variety of flavors. Popular place for lunch! The staff was incredibly helpful, welcoming, and kind. I got the bao buns and the see ew. Buns were just okay. I've had many bao in my life and I felt that the dough lacked flavor but the texture was fine. The pork and other toppings weren't very Thai tasting. The see ew however was super! Noodlehead is by far the best bang for your buck thai meal there is. I always order one item there and one to go for the next day that's how amazing this place is. I love the Chiang Mai Curry and Green Curry Linguine the best. If you love spice, you can ask for "secret 6" on the spice scale! The only thing I miss is they used to have potato triangles which were my favorite appetizer but they unfortunately stopped making them after Covid. read more

Price, service, value boom! Quick caveat, you should probably enjoy noodle dishes and not have a gluten intolerance. In all fairness I did not ask if they have gluten free noodles but it appears not. We had 4 different dishes, pad Thai, kee mao, see yew and street noodles 1. All very tasty, served quickly and hot. They offer 5 spice levels and slightly spicy was soo spot on. Yum. No complaints among the 4 of us. The lady's took a nice portion of noodles home to boot. Definitely recommended if you like Thai inspired dishes. Also good to know is it's BYOB and cash only. My husband and I came here for dinner one evening. We knew ahead of time that it was cash only and street parking so we were prepared! We were seated within 5 minutes. Seating is tight and you are pretty close to your neighbor but this did not bother us. The menu is pretty limited with a few starters and about 5-7 main dishes. I ordered See Yew- a noodle dish with chicken, broccoli and cabbage. I do not typically gravitate towards noodle dishes but this was delicious! The five spiced eggplant was fine: steamed to a custard-like level of softness, then paired with a salty sauce and served cold. The dan dan noodles were probably best suited for a dine-in experience and didn't really travel well. My partner tells me that the stuffed pork buns were good, but the solid piece of pork in the center was less optimal than something shredded or thinned out with some vegetable matter. All told, this was a good experience. The vegetarian appetizers were good but not exceptional. The various noodle and bun dishes were very nicely crafted. The hand made noodles were a particularly nice touch, with a lot more flavor and texture than I would have ever expected. If I have any requests, it would be for more vegetable centric noodle options.

Overall, this is a nice little place that seems to be fairly well run. I suggest going for the dim sum and giving up on expectations for anything on the menu that isn't dim sum. Find another restaurant for your main course.

Remember the saying, "Curiosity killed the cat". - Food: 4 / 5 Appetizer - When you think American cuisine, what do you picture? A hamburger? Hot dogs? Luckily, at Nicky's, even without disclosure, we had no issues at the end of the night.
