Adorable cozy little nook in the heart of Russian Hill, with free WiFi and AMAZING bottles of wine - haven't had a bad one yet! I just got introduced to this sweet little place by a friend and am in love. The new owners, Rana and her husband, are often working behind the counter and are the sweetest people ever - I notice how they really look after their guests and treat them like family. One of my absolute favorite cafes in the city! I always come here Sundays for a cafe day to get some work done. The ambiance is really calming and there's lots of light that comes through the windows. It's a really chill and low-key cafe, but that is what I love so much about it. Free wifi, plenty of outlets, and good coffee. It's normally just filled with people doing work or reading. It is family own, and the owners are so kind and nice. This is my second time here... both times were dramatically different. I'll need to come back a third to get a better estimate. The first time I came here was on a weekday. I grabbed their house blend and sat inside to work. It was rather quiet and felt like a good place to work on the weekdays. There was free wifi and the corner location of the shop provides a good cross breeze when they open the windows. Be aware, don't bring your dog here expecting to have it sit next to you unless it's a service dog. Also, the Hyde street cable car passes by on both sides.. this place is located at the intersection where the cable car turns, so you'll get the loud noise of it passing by. Some people might find that cool, others may find it annoying; just letting you know. The second time I came I had the same mindset to do work, but this was on a Saturday afternoon. Bad Idea. There is no wifi on the weekends and the place was crowded w/ people there for brunch. It's a quite small place so they use the space very efficiently getting people in and out. However, It was extremely loud. Not loud as in "Hey, i'm in a conference hall with 100 people talking"... but as in "Hey, I'm in a bar, it's 11pm, the warriors are in the finals, and there are 100 people in a bar that can hold 90 and in order for me to talk to the person next to me I have to yell". In all seriousness, it was so loud that I had to raise my voice extremely in order to talk to the person sitting across the table from me. It was likely due to the group of 10 behind us in a corner, but there is no telling. Be prepared that if you go on a weekend during brunch time, It might be crowded, and in turn, will be extremely loud. The place is not very big and it's quite popular. Living in Russian Hill, the Cable Car is my primary mode of transportation, and as I round the corner of Jackson and Hyde, I always look at the folks happily situated outside of the Nook cafe enviously, thinking to myself, "Why aren't I soaking up the sun right now?" Luckily, dog-sitting forces one to dine al fresco, and finally I became one of those people. Truly, bliss = sitting outside of Nook in the sun with an over-sized latte, good friends all around and Coco the chihuahua curled up in my lap. The lovely weather forced me to perch there twice over the weekend. My favorite food experience was sharing the smoked salmon and creme fraiche on whole wheat crostini and the cheese and fig spread on walnut bread with my sis. Love that sweet and savory combo! They were very Nice! When I was watching one of them fixing sandwiches and salad, she was very well preparing when she was making them. I found that there are Sake and Soju cocktails. I don't care Soju so it doesn't matter. But, when I saw the word of "Nigori-Sake", turned me off. Because Nigori-Sake is = White Sweet Sugary liquid Shit. March 3rd is Girl's Day in Japan. Girls can drink Nigori-Sake the day openly even though the girls are under age. I mean "GIRLS". They are at least 7 years old, girls are drinking! And No parents get arrested because the Sake is sweet like a candy. It's a Girly drink. Nigori-Zake is. Maybe any White Sweet Sugary liquid Shit is Girl's drink by the way. But, there was NO alcohol for Boy's Day at every May 5th. You know Japanese are very sexists in many degrees. But, I always thought it's not fair. Walked past this cute little cafe hundreds of times, always hoping next time I would have enough time to sit down, have a cup of tea and enjoy this classic SF corner, watching the cable cars passing by. On a very rainy Saturday afternoon, I was finally able to make it happen, and it couldn't have been better than that. Well, maybe it was the melodic rain outside. Or maybe it was the dreamy cable car passing by and reminding me I was in one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in the world. Or maybe it was the red counter, the high yellow walls, and the wooden tables. Or maybe it was my company's beautiful smile and voice, that made time stop and made me feel inebriated. Maybe it was the whole combination, but Nook now is one of my favorite spots in the city. I am now looking forward to coming back, going past the tea, and trying one of their vast selection of wine, with a bite to eat. :-) read more

Nook is now my morning breakfast and default hangout place. Stalkers please update your surveillance plans. It's usually not too packed, there's plenty of power plugs for laptops, and the wifi is pretty strong. (Although they turn it off on weekends and don't have a sign saying so, which is why the -1 star.) The chicken caesar salad is really well done. I haven't tried many of their other dishes because they tend to have vegetables that I don't like. I was excited to try Nook after reading all of the great reviews, however my experience was not good at all. Got to the counter to order and waited probably 3 minutes until someone acknowledged me. There was a man making a latte right in front of methat could have easily said, "I will be with you shortly" but no. Once I was finally able to put in my order, I felt uncomfortable and not welcomed. The man taking my order was rude and cold. After I went up to the counter to receive my breakfast bagel, I noticed they put ham on it instead of bacon . I told him that I had asked for bacon and he said it will be a while until he can fix it. Ummm are you serious!? No apology or "let me fix this for you." After spending $12 on not fresh orange juice and a breakfast bagel, I will never return to Nook or give them my business again. read more

I love the Nook so hard. One time I broke a flute after consuming a dozen bottomless mimosas, and there was no judgment. One time I saw a youngin' get sick (and apparently, lost) after coming to the Nook post B-2-B debauchery. She was a mess; she made a mess; she didn't even buy a bottomless mimosa to warrant that kind of behavior! Regardless, there was only a little judgment. Many times I drank $1.50 PBRs here and had a PBRty all by myself. (P.S. evenings after 6pm and weekends are when they turn off the wifi because hello, that's what traditional America should be all about.) Another time I was studying for the Bar and spent hours posted at the Nook, week after week. No judgment! Just some friendly neighbors dropping in, noting the Barbri books, and offering kind, knowing, supportive commentary. Aw. The Nook is about community you guys. The staff put up with so much yuppy "can I bother you and borrow the outlet for my macbook?" bullshit and don't create a hostile [whatever] environment for you when you're there. I hope their dueling tip jars runneth over at the end of every day in gratitude. And I hope you don't perch here as long as I do, bc that would cramp my style. I have nothing to complain about. Cute little joint where we stopped for a little libation on our way to Lombard Street. A couple of outdoor tables was a nice place to sip some beers on a warm sunny day. Since we didn't sample any of the food or coffee I can't say how skilled they are in those departments, but I thought they could've been a bit more diligent about busing the tables. I have heard this place is usually packed on the weekend and difficult to get a seat. It rained and it is Easter Sunday, so it is not as packed as it could be. Nevertheless, all of the table are occupied but we managed to find a place sit without waiting. I had the turkey melt and my girlfriend had the pesto chicken sandwich (it came with greens). It was suffice for a light breakfast. Definitely not a hearty eggs, hash brows, sausage and bacon kind of place. FYI: You order and pick up at the counter yourself. No wait staff. This place needed an upgrade to another star! We came here for happy hour on a weekday, and it was a mellow happy hour to catch up and people watch in Nob Hill. It was a challenge to catch up inside, because the lap tops were out and we did not want to be distracting or plain annoying. They have a couple small (and somewhat unstable) tables and chairs to sit out. The happy hour menu with the cheap sangria and tasty bites (pizzas, cheese plates, hummus) are all fun to snack on. The old adage goes "criminals always return to the scene of the crime." I'd like to propose an addendum to that adage: "Sarah J. always returns to the scene of a bad date." But how could I avoid it when more than one bad date has occurred at Nook? I can't write it off my list forever... with the option to get wine, beer, coffee, breakfast, lunch or dinner, it's just too damn versatile. Not to mention, I might expire if I don't have the Avocado/Mango Chutney/Gruyere sandwich on a whole wheat baguette at least once a month. It's also right down the street from my house, making my roommate's standing offer to show up and play the drunk, angry ex-boyfriend if I'm ever in a bind, actually feasible. Very rude staff. I live very close the Nook and I go there often for lunch. Yesterday I was there with a friend and I saw a dish on the counter that looked pretty good. I pointed at it and asked: "Could you please tell me what this is?" The guy behind the counter reacted as if I had spat on the dish. "Don't poke at the food!" he screamed. My finger was at least 15 inches from the plate. "I'm not touching it", I said. And he screamed again: "If this were your plate, you wouldn't want people to poke at it!" My friend and I decided to leave. Another customer who had listened to the exchange said: "I would leave too, if I were you. There are many better places around here". I agree. read more

I went into Nook recently for breakfast. I have known about this place since it's close to Hyde Street Bistro and the Powell-Hyde Cable Car. I consider Nook to have more of a coffeehouse feel and less of a dining establishment. They offer small plates, sandwiches, and a few breakfast and dinner items. I ordered a breakfast wrap and a hot apple cider. The cider was perfect for the cold weather with its nice smooth taste. The breakfast wrap was served with eggs, potatoes, cheese wrapped in a tortilla. This was only ok since it was surprisingly dry. With the wrap is a mixed green salad which saved the meal. With friendly customer service, I will probably be back here and try a coffee and a sandwich next time. read more

Nook is the best place in the neighborhood to get stuff done. I provide three reasons why this is so. 1) Patrons are not distracting. The flocks of sangria sipping, spandex wearing, sweatered dog walking yoga moms tend to speak with each other about topics that do not interest me. I stay focused when I am not eavesdropping. 2) Their unique internet policy forces patrons to use the internet effectively. Unplugging the wifi at 6:30pm forces yelpers like myself to use time on the internet productively and time off the internet time doing real work, like drawing pictures of dinosaurs and reading Marquis de Sade. 3) The staff are cheerful and joyous. They pleasantly serve me endless cans of $1.50 PBRs and then nourish my hangovers the following morning with strong coffee, oatmeal cookies and chicken pesto sandwiches. Each time I walk in I am greeted with smiles, hellos, howya doins, sunshine and rainbows. I'd smooch each of those M.F.ers on right on their beautiful freaking faces if I hadn't already experienced how problematic that can be. I'm sitting here now and of all the internet cafes within walking distance from my house, this one is the best, hence five stars. The iced coffee is great because its pre-chilled beforehand. I cannnot forgive places that pour hot coffee over ice and call it ice coffee. That is just diluted tepid coffee now. They also have a cheese dish with fig spread. Go figs. I wish everyplace had fig something. The only not so good thing is that something always smells like its burning. Why?? Please tell me it's not burnt coffee. Another problem with this place is they have beer and wine, so my attempt to do work is always short lived. But that's not Nook's fault... From 5 to 7pm, happy hour wine is $2.50 and nothing tastes that bad when it's $2.50. Seeing the cable car go by with happy tourists is lovely. Update: Beginning June 1, 2006, no wifi after six and no wifi on weekends. I can't decide if this is good or bad. Way to treat conscious regulars like myself who consciously buy something to drink or something to eat every 1.5 hours or so. But, I'm sure its a good idea if there are customers who buy a measely cup of tea and sip on it for hours and has the audacity to ask for more hot water. read more

This little cafe has an impressively huge menu, although the hummus plate and the mango-avocado sandwich are so good I honestly haven't tried much else! During the daytimes it's pretty packed with people on laptops, and can get a bit loud with the music and chatting. But it's bright and sunny and feels cozy, so it's a good treat even if you don't get anything done. Plus, they have a happy hour EVERY DAY (including weekends!) with some pretty good deals on drinks (sake cocktails, house wine, and beer), which is perfect for a late-afternoon chill when you've packed your day with errands. read more
