What a cute little cafe! Came here since I had a coupon from TownHog (woohoo!) and I'm so glad I did! It's right on the corner of Hyde & Jackson and this place was yummy! With such a promising list of sandwiches, salads, breakfast items and small plates, it's enough to make me come back just so I can try out the rest of the menu! Ordered the small plate of 4 smoked salmon with creme fraiche, lemon on top of whole wheat crostini which came with a side salad. It was delicious! But I'm a big fan of smoked salmon so I'll always think it's good. Also ordered the Cheese & Broccoli quiche. Comes in two pieces so it was great to share. 3 young-ish college-aged people, 1 elderly couple, 2 single women working on their laptops, 1 pair of Indian newly-weds, 2 men eating dinner across from their newspapers ... I've never seen such a diverse collection of yuppies anywhere - if that's not too much of an oxymoron. This is a great place for people watching. However, you can't even whisper about it with your girlfriends because the tables are set super close to each other. In fact, that would be my one criticism. The sterile-ly square and plain wooden tables messily crammed into the space just don't match the faux-victorian (or is it edwardian? eh - whatever) decor. If you go faux-anything, come on, you gotta go faux- all the way. But, the food's good. It's like they shop for ingredients at Whole Foods, but are still fairly generous with their portions. Everything is made right when you order it. When they say there's Pesto in the sandwich, they don't mean a light swipe of pesto. They're serious with the pesto - it was dripping from the bread. The name could not be more fitting. My cousin Griselda D and I noticed the Happy Hour sign propped outside, so we decided to escape the cold in this warm little nook on the corner of Hyde & Jackson. Happy hour is every day from 5-7pm and includes: wine ($2.95), sake or soju cocktails ($4), mimosas & bellinis ($4), PBR ($1.50), sangria ($4 or $18 for a pitcher), pita pizza ($4). They also offer free wi-fi until 6pm. Atop the tables were open newspapers, laptops, lattes and vegan pastries. I took a browse over their menu - they had sandwiches, salads, coffee, bagels and small breakfast items. I decided on vegan cake. They had cherry pie and maple pecan but I opted for the carrot cake. I was surprised at how yummy it was. It was less sweet than fatty, regular cake, but still tasty. I also tried their sake ginger and soju mint martinis. As we sat, I noticed the cable cars whizzing by on the corner. The jingle of the cable car bell was strangely soothing. I have a Sunday ritual of visiting a different coffee shop every weekend and enjoying an Americano and a good lunch. So I thought I'd start leaving reviews on these based on three criteria (5 being the best): Food, ambiance, and extras. You're probably wondering why I'm not grading on coffee? Well because I'm not an expert, but what I do know about is the above topics. Food: 4 They provided quite a vast selection of food options, from sandwiches, salads, baked goods, and small bits. All of which were made to order. I ended up having the chicken pesto sandwich that came with a salad. I do have to say it was satisfying, however, I feel like the chicken might have reheated, prepackaged meat and not sure if they made the pesto in house. The salad was just greens with a little bit of dressing. The soft ciabatta bread and cheese was what saved it for me. Again, overall satisfying, but which it was fresher ingredients. Ambiance: 4 This shop is super cute and if you're looking for a neighborhood vibe, this is it. The shop had huge windows that let in a lot of light, which I loved! So I was sure to sit by the window on the bench that spans across the wall. Though there were cushions on the benches.. they were worn out and flat so wasn't the most comfortable. The staff was really nice and helpful when ordering and delivered my food to my table. The cafe is made even more charming with the trolly that rides by from time to time. It was pretty quiet despite the trolly, which is was surprising. Overall, very cute and welcoming cafe. Extras: 5 So one of my pet peeves is when you go to a cafe and they have bad wifi, Nook had very strong wifi which was easy to connect. However, on the weekends, there's a 2-hour limit, which really wasn't an issue for me, since I only stayed that long. They also had a good amount of outlets to plug into against the wall which is nice to see. Parking wasn't too bad either, considering the location. I feel like anything past Van Ness, parking get's difficult, but I was able to find a spot just up the street. Luck? Maybe. Overall I really liked this shop and highly recommend checking it out. I went around noon and it wasn't super busy, so might be a good place to meet up with a friend for lunch or work on your laptop to get somethings done. read more

When Jonah's on Hyde is closed is manage to walk an extra three blocks to Nook. Nook makes a killer breakfast bagel and it seems like they have various other offerings that are also tasty. You definitely get quality food here. My breakfast bagel runs about $5 which is about $2 more than I care to spend but still not that bad considering Russian Hill prices are insane (coughs *real food* coughs). They have plenty of seating and the decor is relaxing. You'll always see law students or developers just studying or taking advantage of the wi-fi. It's right off the cable car line so it's conveniently located. Best sandwich: Turkey w/ cranberry sauce or the prosciutto / mozarella / tomatoe on baguette. read more

I go to a lot of cafes here in SF (I try at least one new one every week), and this has remained my favorite since I first visited. For me, there are three main elements that really make a cafe: the food/drink, the ambiance, and the service. The food/drink: I'm a coffee snob. I hate to be that kind of millennial, but I truly love coffee and have high expectations for it. I think they serve Equator blend (don't hold me to that) and it's always excellent. The black coffee is never over brewed or burned, and the espresso is rich. There's a wide selection of beers and wines served (4 pm happy hour? yes please). On the weekend they serve bottomless mimosas until 3 pm; you really can't beat that. I haven't tried much food from the menu, but there are loads of options. What few food items I have had, I've thoroughly enjoyed. The smoked salmon small plate is much more filling than you'd expect!! The ambiance: This is one of the few cafes where I can go to work for hours on end without disruption, but can also come here for a cute date. The decor is a classic cafe; I find it comforting and charming. When the cable car drives by I feel like a beatnik lesbian poet in a French cafe in 1959 (and yes, I 100% mean that in a good way). They switch up the music genres often enough that there's variety without feeling jumpy. It's quiet but not empty. It's busy but not distracting. The service: I really can't emphasize enough that the service here is absolutely fabulous. The staff is always friendly, and constantly on the move. They work quickly without sacrificing quality. Very nice spot for some coffee after dinner. We were driving down Van Ness and decided to give them a shot because we needed a quick pick me up and wanted a cozy cafe. The place was clean and very pleasant to sit in. The service was really friendly. The manager or owner lady was extremely nice to our little guy and gave him a cookie. Nook has a nice selection of salads, sandwiches, breakfast, and small plates but we were full from dinner and didn't try anything. We'll be back if we get lucky again with parking. read more

I originally mistook this place for a concept Barnes and Noble cafe featuring the Nook eReader, but to my pleasant surprise, it was an independent cafe that happens to have similar, bright branding. The place is a little too unfriendly to gadget users with the lack of plentiful outlets and active management of WiFi availability during peak hours. That said, the coffee and espresso drinks are the best in the neighborhood. The food is decent. The happy hour specials are really what makes this place worth visiting with some friends. If you come alone, you probably are better off bringing what they call a "printed book" to keep you company. read more

The tables seem to get filled fast we came in around noon on a weekday and there was only one table left. Ordered one of the specials which was a chef salad ($9). Huge serving size full of fresh tomatoes, egg, ham, turkey, and cheese. It was so tasty and light! Also got the chai tea ($4) which I thought was just okay. I wouldn't order that again. My boyfriend got the quiche of the day with a small side salad which was artichoke ($9). It was very cheesy but he said it was nothing special. Depending on what you enjoy for breakfast, this might not be your cup of tea. Cute little corner eatery in my neighborhood, I've passed by The Nook every day without stoping in until this AM. Very friendly service, definitely a locals stop for coffee, and presents many inviting pastries and breakfast sweets on display. The menu is featured on a chalk board, lofted on the wall behind the counter. I love the fact that locals walk in here, and they don't even have to say what they want to drink! It simply reminds me of the cafe's in Italy, where they take pride in customers, and show it by preparing there regular drink at the first glimpse of entering the cafe! It saves time for all the gossip talk we italians love to partake in ;) Sadly all the cooking is done in those super fast convection microwaves... Like at Dunkin Donuts, or Starbucks. Everything seems to be precooked and/or frozen, accept for the greens and cold items, of course. A little unexpected due to previous yelpers praise! I Ordered the breakfast burrito, and a glass of OJ. After 10 minutes, I was served with what you can see in the pictures (ATTACHED ABOVE) Burnt to perfection, and room temp on the inside... Reminds me of the scene from national lampoons Christmas dinner, where everything looks delicious, until they cut the turkey open, and it explodes. (The exploding part will be me in 2 hours.) The Burrito's ingredients are eggs(?), cheese, beans and potatoes. Upon review of the menu, it states ham is included, and I no mention of potatoes? I think the ham was similar in shape to bacon bits, and its hidden in the mush of beans... I can't tell, or taste. Thank the good lord for the burnt outside, it was the only source of a crunch and flavor. The burrito is served with a side of Tostito's Salsa, in order to drown your breakfast in. My saving grace was the greens, which were fresh and nicely dressed, and honestly salvaged the near death of my tastebuds. I bet this place can produce pretty good salads!! I decide I need some caffeine to go, and ill give them a shot, instead of walking to Starbucks. My usual, is an Americano. Caffeine doesn't mix well with my Adderall, so I'm forced to always order decaf espresso. MY LUCKY DAY! No decaf espresso!!! Im dumbfounded! I don't know what to drink, so I revert to a small coffee to go... which is where I want to make my last point (PROMISE GUYS!) I just paid 12$ for Breakfast, I pre-tipped the standard percentage, and now I want to use my debit card for a coffee, and I hear "Sorry, we have a minimum?" All credit card rules aside, I JUST SPENT $15 ON BREAKFAST AND I CANT HAVE COFFEE CUZ OF A MINIMUM LIMIT? Mind you, any "Minimum" or "surcharge" is a VIOLATION of contract with Visa, Mastercard, and American Express... I didn't pull that wild card out! I simply said, I would have ordered a $4 drink, but your out of decaf espresso, so please do me a favor. She said, "Whatever, its not like I even care." God bless this place!!! I got my small coffee, packed up my dog food to bring to the lab with me... see if I can discover the microscopic ham. I feel the Nook has charm, and the cliental. With some smart business moves, they can become a permanent edition to the neighborhood. For me, its quality over quantity (unless were talking about alcohol!) I always walk/drive/cable ride by this place and finally got to try it today. I may have found my new favorite cafe. The food is so fresh and healthy. The shrimp was really good quality. I'm so excited to return. Update: Finally deciding to post this review as I originally wrote it on my phone so could not. Since my first visit about 3 months ago, I've been back numerous times and I tried so many more items. Highly recommend the shrimp and grapefruit salad that I tried the first time. It's my favorite. Others are the Salmon and Creme Fraiche, procuttio sandwich, and tomato and mozzarella. Also, I was really impressed with their mocha. It took me half a day to find a cafe like this. I journeyed through blocks and blocks of spare, hipster, reductive cafes to find a good place with atmosphere that actually invited me to sit down for a spell and commit some words to the page. This place calls me to write a book here. So there are a few characteristics that take a cafe from merely okay to the place that I want to be on the daily. Atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere - nice windows, good soft lighting, comfortable seats with cushions. This place lives on a beautiful street on the cable car line, lush trees, and cute little tables outside. The cable car goes by every 10 minutes with people hanging off the side. There are great views of the city from most seats in the cafe. Nice wood floors, big windows, wooden chairs and benches with cushions. In the evening they break out the candles on each table to add a nice touch. The tables are set up in a way that you can be in your own private world, but at the same time it invites conversation with the other people in the cafe. The music is pleasant and non-intrusive. People seem to be in a good mood here. Writers, readers, people sharing wine and a conversation. A complex menu to fit the diets of a diverse crowd. I'm so very tired of cafes that only offer a mix of only bready-bread-bread things. The nook does have sandwiches but it also has diverse salads and small plates with a European and Mediterranean flair and home made soups. They also have some good morning scrambles. You can tell thought and good organic ingredients go into everything they make. They also serve wine, cocktails and beer for those who are inspired by a good drink. An engaged, present owner. A new owner, Rana Chedyak recently bought the cafe after owning Fog Hill Market. I saw her walking around the cafe greeting everyone, checking in on them, and even offering samplings of her home-made hummus (She's Lebanese so you know that hummus was on point, delicious with just enough salt and fresh lemon juice). I had a plate with fresh tomatoes, Mozzarella and cucumbers and hummas. She was very pleasant and made me feel like part of the family. I can feel her creative energy in the place and it makes a big difference. Pleasant, helpful, adoreable employees. The prices are reasonable. You can eat for under $10. In SF. Yes, you read that right. For the grand finale - Free Wifi and abundant power outlets! This rarely happens in a place with atmosphere. read more

Of the many cafes in San Francisco, this one is by far the best! The cafe is family owned and you can feel the family-friendly vibe as soon as you walk in! Wish I could pack Nook up and take it back to Los Angeles w/ me. This classic cafe, though slightly cramped, is a wonderful place for small group dinners and solo studying. In fact, I'm sure if I had a place like Nook to study at, I would no longer have a problem w/ procrastination as I would try to spend as much time studying as possible. The sandwiches and salads here are absolutely amazing (if you judge it against standard cafe food fare). I'm still dreaming about that turkey cranberry w/ melted brie on baguette sandwich. Mmm... seriously, that was one of the best sandwiches I've had to date. Ham w/ fontina and sage on whole wheat baguette is also great, as is the pricey smoked salmon w/ creme fraiche on whole wheat crostini. Since Nook tries to serve "healthy" food, the mixed greens are very lightly dressed with balsamic vinaigrette, which is perfect for this salad dressing hater. Can't comment on coffee or the wine since I don't drink either, but if you're lucky enough to be in the same city as Nook, go and check it out! read more

There are new owners and a new policy. I ordered a cafe au lait and a cookie, each costing $3.50. There had to be at least $6.00 profit on the $7.00 sale - a profit margin any business would kill for - yet they're now adding a .50 cent fee for paying with a credit card. The service was actually fantastic, I was surprised to read other reviews that said it wasn't so good. They were patient and were happy to make suggestions (which were great) and explain things on the menu. The sandwich was great, it was some sort of pesto, artichoke, hummus concoction and none of the ingredients overwhelmed any of the others, which is tough to do. The breakfast wrap was a little plain, so definitely order it with avocado. A great place to take visitors from out of town as the cable car line runs right outside.
