I've dined at Nopa twice before, and while the first two visits didn't quite hit the mark for me, I'm so glad I gave it a third shot! My most recent visit was an absolute home run, and it's now clear to me why this place is so loved. We visited on a Friday night and were lucky enough to snag bar seating almost immediately. Nopa's menu changes daily, and I must have gotten lucky with this version because every dish we had was a hit. Highlights included the Early Girl Tomatoes, Bucatini, and Wood Baked Beans. The lively atmosphere, paired with the declines food made for a memorable dining experience this time around. I'll definitely be back for more! read more

My wife and I love this restaurant. It's a neighborhood gem. Reservations can be hard to come by, but they have several walk-in seating options: communal table, bar and chef's counter. They have a parklet, but I'm unsure whether that's walk-in or reservations only. We always sit indoors here. The menu changes very frequently and I don't think you can go wrong. What a delicious evening! While an expensive place, the portions were massive and quality was without a doubt amazing! Our server Max was super nice, in addition to fun costumes all around for Halloween. We ordered sooo much, and nearly fell on the floor. We began with drinks, the 50/50 Martini and the Hotel Nacional- both really good! I've heard about this place for a while and finally got reservations to this place through Open Table and I will say the food is good but not absolutely "amazing." Over all hit or miss for us and this is why: I will say though that the cocktails were indeed AMAZING, pricier price point but amazing for sure. So u would recommend going here for nice drinks if you are looking to take someone out somewhere with an elevated ambiance and innovative drinks that is worth the bang for your buck - this is the place. Food wise like I said it was good but wasn't better than some other places I've been with a lower price point. The pork chop was actually kind of salty, moist, perfectly cooked but salty for sure. I liked the house made pappardelle actually but I felt like I had better at other more authentic Italian places in the city. The desserts though - AMAZING, they used very creative flavors and the guava tartlet we had with the scoop of cream cheese ice cream was sooooooo good! We dropped in on a Friday night with no reservation at 735p and were seated by 8:05p- not bad at all! Service and food wait time left a LOT to be desired, hence the 4-stars. I have never waited so long for food in my entire life...it was over an hour between ordering and actually getting any food brought to the table, which is frankly unacceptable...and in the meantime the waitress was inattentive and avoidant when we wanted to order another round of drinks, which is rather embarrassing since I'm here, waiting like a chump and still trying to give them more of my money for drinks ....and I started to get more than a little peeved....but then the food came was so goddamn good that I wasn't mad anymore . We had the New York steak- tender and cooked to perfection (when you don't get asked how you want your steak cooked, that means they are about to do it correctly lol), French fries, which were salted to perfection and served with two of the most delectable dipping sauces I've ever tasted, one a home made ketsup and the other a pesto aioli, and the smoked trout, which I actually hadn't read closely enough to realize it was smoked and served cold haha, so was a little surprised but oh so glad because let me tell you, the tatziki, crostini, cucumber, and garden sweet baby tomatoes in that plate all came together with the smoked trout like a work of art. And we sat there like chumps trying to buy more pre-food drinks because the drinks were incredible- the most delicious sparking Pinot noir I've ever had and an incredible NA sparking wine: I had no idea NA wine even existed! The only thing we could have done without was the side of cauliflower, which was just ok and could have used more flavor. Came in the smallest glass I've ever seen. - Split a little gem salad to start. nice. strawberries in season - then a long pause. We thought our food was lost. - finally, 50 minutes after we sat down we received our mains. Wife had tagliatelle. Said it was good, not great. Portion was absurdly small for $35. - I received a burger, which I ordered medium rare. Except it was well done. Notified the waiter who correctly diagnosed my frustration: this burger is overcooked and took too long. A+ empathy. - Burger was just bad. - despite bad experience, our check had no deductions. I had to ask. - didn't order dessert but they gave us 2 bags of cookies. unclear if for brithday or to make up for the burger. So net: I think this place was once great, now it's just bad food. Another 5 stars for a great NOPA experience tonight. We've been here a few times now over the years. We weren't able to get a reso before, but earlier today, I had checked OpenTable and saw an opening and snagged it! I called in around 5pm to make sure that my app transaction went through because OpenTable had a hiccup, and they picked up the phone, which I appreciated. The food was fantastic and the service as good as it was. The outdoor patio is well done--good lights, good heating, nice furnishings. I also can't stop raving about the Kennebec fries--some of the best fries I've ever had. They stay crispy over our time outdoor dining, too! I'm usually not a fan of chunkier fries, but these take the cake. The avocado aioli that comes with the fries is also delicious. We loved the malt milk chocolate ice cream too. It comes over olive oil and salt flakes. And it's very hard for us to do a night at NOPA without one of us having a cheeseburger and the other asking for half of it. Decent Experience, but Overhyped We booked a last-minute reservation on a Saturday for date night after seeing great reviews on Yelp and TikTok. First off, there's no dedicated parking lot, which is expected for a city location, but finding a spot was a real challenge. I ended up dropping my wife off to check in while I circled for parking--it took quite a while. Once inside, our server greeted me promptly and was very pleasant. We ordered drinks and food based on popular recommendations. My wife had the pork chop, and I went with the burger. Unfortunately, neither dish stood out--the flavors were pretty average for the price. The highlight was the tiramisu, which was delicious, but at $18 a slice, it felt overpriced. On the positive side, our server was attentive, and the ambiance was nice. However, if you're looking for outstanding food, I'd suggest looking elsewhere. Wonderful restaurant. I had been wanting to try this for a long time and I ended up getting a reservation really late on a Friday night. Buzzy atmosphere. Our waitress was very friendly and helped us navigate the menu. I wish, as many of these types of restaurants, that there were more vegetarian options. The crostinis were amazing. The baked beans were OK. The vegetable stew was nice, almost like a chili. The waitress did mention that if you have several vegetarian's in your group, you can let the restaurant know beforehand, and they may be able to accommodate more dishes. Came here on Valentine's Day and loved the ambiance and service here so much, the food just underwhelmed us. We started with the stracciatela which was good, just kind of simple and underwhelming. My drink was good, maybe a little strong and less sweet than i presumed, but i enjoyed it. For entrees, my girlfriend got a pasta dish that she liked quite a bit and i got a burger that was pretty good. Came on a Friday night double date. Place was packed! Trying to find a spot to stand at the bar was challenging. But was able to squeeze in some orders. I was DD so decided to try Zero Proof drinks. The Rinse Rebeet $14 was lightly smoky, floral and herbaceous from the wilderton and amass riverine (botanical elixirs), with a touch of lime and coriander. Definitely never had this before and glad I tried it. For starters we shared the shaved asparagus salad $19 with ricotta and crispy quinoa. Because we shared it, I don't think I got the full effect of the all the flavors and textures. It was very light. The Baked Gigante Beans $16 was cooked in a tomato pesto stew. Warm and hearty. Curried Cauliflower $12 with chickpeas was a side dish that came during appetizers. We ate it all up. Very tasty with the yogurt dip. Mediterranean in feel. Entree Pork Chop $39 with red beans and crunchy hazelnuts. Great cut of bone in pork cooked medium rare - juicy and tender. The red beans and greens threw me off a little from the original pork chop I remembered from NOPA but this dish was still good. Savory and unexpected crunchy from the hazelnut additions. Fried Chicken $29 came in with 4 pieces, hot and crispy with a chili honey. Even the white meat pieces were juicy. Definitely brined. Mmm. Duck Breast $42 was cooked perfectly. Each piece was sliced just right. Not too fatty. Paired with cumin carrots and risotto. This dish was polished off quickly. We didn't have space for dessert but I did order another zero proof drink. Our drinks and the goat cheese appetizer were delicious! If I were to come back, this is all I'd eat. Especially for the price. The Moroccan spiced chicken was good, but not sure if $29 worth for 4 pieces. The flatbread was sorta a joke, presentation looks like someone dropped it and then put it back on the plate lol. Another addition to my list of overrated overhyped SF eateries. I stayed awake past midnight to make a reservation at this place the day they opened up. There was no option to choose an indoor vs outdoor table, however once we got to the restaurant, they told us (rather rudely) the table was for outdoor seating. It was a particularly cold day in the city, and the meager heat lamp above the table did nothing to warm us. There should really be an outdoor seating discount since there are no ambiance or electricity costs incurred out there. All of the food we ordered needed salt. I can't think of anything that I would recommend, I can tell they were going for straightforward dishes with unique flavor combinations, but the flavors just didn't work and the ingredients were just not carefully handled. Nopa - Laughable bread presentation, 2 slices of cold bread with a stick of butter thrown across the top - New American Near Me - San Francisco, California

Nopa is a classic American brasserie with Mediterranean influences, so named after the San Francisco neighborhood in which it resides on the corner of Divisidero and Hayes Streets. The NoPa neighborhood stands for North of the Panhandle, which is near the narrow eastern strip of Golden Gate Park that has hip cafés, quirky shops and colorful Victorians most notably the Painted Ladies which is located in nearby Alamo Square. Chef Lawrence Jossel has been curating his organic wood-fired cuisine for over a decade and a half now and the buzz he created when they first opened is still here as we recently came on a weeknight evening for dinner and the place was still buzzing both inside their dining room, and the massive outdoor parklet they created along Hayes Street, which is where our party of six were sat, thanks to being able to make reservations at no extra charge on their website via OpenTable. The dinner menu at Nopa is fairly simple as their smaller dishes or appetizers are on one side of their menu and their entrées and sides are on the other side of their menu. To start our meal, we opted to order two suggestions from our server, including their Flatbread topped with Nopa bacon, Padrón peppers and cheddar, and their Roasted Corn Salad, which was topped with Green Plums, avocado and spiced chickpeas. I loved their Flatbread as it was warm and tasty with every bite thanks the abundance of ingredients that topped every small bite. For 22 dollars it was a nicely priced deal that easily could have served as a full meal for any one diner. The salad, although well composed and prepared, was a bit on the smaller side and therefore not the most sharable dish and not worth the 19 dollar price point. Then it was time to decide what entrée each of us would order, and although a number of options sounded delectable, we broke out into two camps, pasta and protein. I opted to order their Country Pork Chop served with Roasted Summer Squash and Stone Fruit Mostarda, others in my dining party opted to order their House Made Pappardelle topped with a nine hour Bolognese and dragon tongue beans, and their Moroccan Spice Fried Chicken served with Chili Honey, in addition to a side of Kennebec French Fries, which was served with a side of Basil Parmesan Aioli. To pair with our meal some of us ordered a little libation including their Alebrije, which was a combination of Morro Espadin mezcal, apricot shrub, cacao, espelette and lemon, and their Pisco Punch which was a combination of Quebranta Pisco, pineapple gum, preserved meyer lemon cordial, and makrut lime leaf. Our meal came out in due time, and the Pork Chop was a thick cut of meat cooked medium rare to medium just the way I like it and when combined the generous amounts of squash and stone fruit, it made for the most delectable and reasonably priced meal. I got a little sample of their Pappardelle and it was a rich combination of noodles, sauce and meat that tasted perfectly. We actually enjoyed so much food that everyone in our party had a little bit of extra food to take home with us. Then it was time for dessert, and we previously let our server know that we had a birthday in our party and our server graciously complimentary gifted our recipient a scoop of their Malted Milk Chocolate Ice Cream. We were all so enamored with a little amuse bouche of sweets that we decided to split two more desserts. We opted to order their Dark Chocolate Pudding Tartlet which was topped with a passionfruit mousse, pistachios, and roasted strawberries, and their Warm Peach Crumble which was topped with toasted almonds, raspberries and a scoop of vanilla bean bay leaf ice cream. We loved all of the compositions of the desserts as it was the perfect combination of sweet and savory with that extra kick of flavor. Every dish we experienced this evening was so perfectly composed that it proves that Nopa has still not lost any of the rustic homemade flavors that put it on the map those many years ago when they first opened. They contributed to the overall rebirth of the area that continues to bustle with a number of other restaurants and bars that are as equally at home as Nopa is, and this includes their sister Mexican restaurant Nopalita, which is mere block and a half away. This is my third time at Nopa, but first in over a decade, and it remains as good as it was the first time I went, and I didn't even get to rave over their signature Wood Grilled Cheeseburger, which had me coming back for more and no doubt is one of the best in town. At Nopa, they've become almost a neighborhood destination for locals and out-of-towners alike, and after decades of success, I don't see them slowing down anytime soon. read more

The bread and butter is incredible (not sure how bread and butter is this good, but it is!) and we always love the burrata dish they have that changes seasonally. I came here on a Tuesday night and it was super busy! Really beautiful restaurant in a great location, we were seated on the upper area which gave a really nice view of the entire restaurant. Great location and really nice ambiance. For food, we started with the sausage and the rigatoni, and for mains we shared the flatbread and the Porchetta. Honestly I do not think any of these items stood out to me, everything was good but not very memorable. For dessert, we had the chocolate chip cookies and a chocolate pot de creme (not sure what it's called on the menu), which were really great! I honestly think the most standout thing was the shortbread that came with the chocolate pudding, it had a really delicate yet balanced flavour. Overall, I would return to nopa for the ambiance and since it's in such a great location, but not for the food itself. Nopa is a restaurant that focuses on combining quality, seasonal ingredients without over amplifying their menu. I got their smoked tomato Caesar salad, warm goat cheese and brie, and the pappardelle bolognese. All of which were amazing. The smoked tomato caesar salad was a dish I enjoyed more than expected. The goat cheese was good - a little thick to where it was hard to spread on the crostini but the flavors with the fresh fig and blackberries were great. The pappardelle was exactly as expected in a delicious, hearty home-cooked bolognese. I also appreciate that Nopa has a changing menu based on the season while also having their staples that they always offer. I decided to get a reservation for Nopa as I was visiting SF and the Yelp reviews had the highest remarks. I was easily able to get reservations on Opentable a week or so out with no issues. A friend in SF told me Nopa was just fine and not worth it, but I didn't listen. Mistake from me. On a cold night, I'm so glad I chose an indoor reservation for my party of 2. We did show up 4 minutes early, but we were not seated until 15 minutes after our reservation time at 8:15pm tonight. For a place that consistently gets super booked up, you would think they have a good pattern down. It was even more disappointing to know when I walked to the back of the restaurant to the restroom and noticing 4+ empty tables that were cleaned off and the table set. Once we were seated, the manager came by and apologized for the seating delay and told us there would be a gift from the chef. Great service (or so we thought). We decided to order the braised lamb shoulder and bread for our appetizers and a cider. The gift from the chef was the potato latkes. The lamb dish was so yummy and flavorful. I did wish there was more meat, but so delicious. The bread was good as well but the plating was odd as it tried to maintain a more modern approach. The potato latkes were so good and I enjoyed every bite. Potato latke itself might have been a smidge over fried but I love extra crispy potato. After finishing our appetizers, we waited more than 30 minutes for our entrees. At this point, we were both ready to go elsewhere as the delay was so long. Also, the server I had took my cider glass I had away while I still had several sips left in my glass?? He never asked if he could take my glass or if I was finished? I was just rather too shocked to stop him in that moment. I don't know how this would be classified as good service especially as I paid for my full beverage and I expect to have it in its entirety. For our entrees, we ordered the cheeseburger and the New York steak. My boyfriend got the avocado and bacon on his burger as well for an extra $6. He liked the burger and overall said it was good, but he noticed the patty itself was not cooked evenly. The New York steak for me was the BIGGEST disappointment. As a big steak lover, this was a miss. I always eat steaks a medium rare and this steak was easily a rare in the very center and really blue. The steak and potatoes lacked salt. Potatoes seemed to be an afterthought with no flavor. The cilantro and herb blend they put on top had an incredibly weird and off putting flavor. It seemed they were trying to go in the chimichurri direction and missed. I've truly had better steaks and more enjoyable at Longhorn. I had maybe 4 bites before getting it to-go for anybody else to have. We planned on getting dessert here, but I was really so over Nopa at this point. I asked for the check, signed, and left before seeing the amount charged onto my credit card which was over the amount I estimated mentally. I called Nopa and asked for my receipt to verify my receipt. Nopa charged my table with the "gift from the chef". Mistakes happen, but this "gift" actually was more of a inconvenience for me. All in all, I won't be back here and can't recommend it given the other spectacular places in the area. read more

After living in the neighborhood of NOPA for 2 years, I FINALLY got the chance to dine here! I'm always a little hesitant going to more upscale restaurants, but after hearing all the hype, I'm so glad I was able to try it out before I moved! NOPA is definitely on the pricier side, but they make up for it with great quality food and excellent service. You pretty much have to make a reservation in advance, or else you'll end up waiting a WHILE for a table (I once asked a different time and they gave me a 3 hr wait omg). The inside is very warm and bustling - the tables are lil crowded together, but glad to know they're squeezing as many ppl in side as they can lol. Now for the food, it was excellent. Here's what I got: - FRENCH FRIES - I'm a fries fanatic, but these weren't my favorite. A little too crispy, and not potato-y enough. However, the sauces were quite yummy! - BRUSSEL SPROUTS - super crispy and delicious! would order again - PORK CHOP - VERY GOOD! Definitely on the pricier side, but I saw so many Yelpers recommend this entree, so I decided to try it. It was beautifully cooked and sooooo juicy on the inside. It felt like it really melted in my mouth. Salivating now just thinking about it. This review is long overdue with my last visit last year. Dined here about 7 years ago and it was all about the pork chop! Visited for dinner with friends and that pork is still the popular dish and always my 'go-to'. Cooked medium rare with some slight pink, juicy, smoky and flavorful with stone fruit. I'd have to say one of the best in the City! Great selection of drinks (SF pricing) and food with friendly service. I've only been here for HH and dinner and place is lively and packed on weeknights starting at 7pm...so not the best place for a quiet or romantic dinner. Parking can be a little tricky but fortunately, parking "CARma" is always on my side :) Would love to dine here again for brunch when things settle. In the meantime, NOPA is offering TAKEOUT Tuesday - Saturday, 4-8pm taking same day order up to 1pm! A good to know option! read more

What is not to love about NOPA??? Let's start with the food, the quality is top notch, the ingredients are locally grown and raised and ALWAYS fresh, hence the everchanging menu. And every meal is prepared with love and attention to detail. The chef uses local farms to source his kitchen, so when people say it is "overpriced" they must not know where the ingredients come from. The vibe and ambiance of NOPA is chill, but upbeat. The design achieves a warm and cozy feel despite the tall ceiling and big open space. They always have great music on and the decor is understated to allow the essence of the old building take the lead. Whenever I walk in, I feel so at home. It is hard to explain why, so you need to experience it for yourself. The service here is always great. From the hosts to the servers to the management, everyone is welcoming, friendly, good humored, and always aiming to please. I was just here on Sunday night (July 7th) and I had a special request for my friend's birthday, and the manager was extremely accommodating and made our dinner extra special. NOPA is unpretentious, even though they have earned every right to be boastful. It is high class dining, but with a casual and fun feel. This is due largely to the culture that is cultivated by the owners and the management. That paired with amazing food always keeps us coming back. The one and only downside of NOPA is beyond their control, which is the parking. Being from out of town, I usually need to drive in and finding parking can be a challenge. However, it is so very worth the wait. NOPA is definitely a TOP 3 on my list of dining establishments in SF. read more

Wow oh wow! The ambiance itself is worth a visit here but make sure you have a reservation! The apps were loaded with variety and flavor! The butternut squash was a mix of sweet and salty and creamy. The Brussels were perfectly roasted with flavor! The chicken was 4 large pieces of chicken! The Thyme drinks were in cute bear glasses and very unique! Will definitely be back! read more
