    Lunch entree

Why is this place a hidden gem? It should be on the "must visit" list for Galveston. I wish I remembered the name of my lunch entree because it was amazing and very cost conscious! The salsa was so good you could drink it!! The queso was heavenly. It was so good I poured it on my tacos. The tacos were not greasy at all - they clearly drain the meat prior to loading up the taco. On top of all of this mouth watering delicious food, the service was spot on! The waitress carried herself like she was the manager or owner; that level of attentiveness. She was super friendly and treated everyone like a regular. This is my new go-to lunch spot and will be yours too, once tou try it!

There are a few places on Galveston Island that my family and I feel we must visit whenever we come into town, and this little Mexican eatery is one of them. This restaurant has become a well known spot for people from both in, and out of town, and with good reason. It is hard to find Mexican restaurants that can deliver the certain "je ne sais quoi" most of us of Hispanic background seek when looking for truly homestyle cooking, and this place has got that down to a T. We normally enjoy coming to La Nopalera early in the morning. They throw down some very appetizing breakfast plates that make me feel like I've traveled back in time to my grandmas home in Mexico. The rustic breakfast is packed with flavor and the touch of love we look for in comfort food. I will usually go with the barbacoa breakfast plate; a large serving with smooth refried beans, large cubes of hearty fried potatoes, two eggs (I take mine over easy), a generous amount of tender barbacoa, and finally two warm flour tortillas to bring it all together. It's a simple yet very difficult dish to properly execute, more specifically the barbacoa. The menudo of course is another favorite here. Just like any recipe, everyone has their own version and make it to their liking. The menudo here is full-flavored and well rounded out without overstepping the spice too far. It has enough spice to flavor the broth, but not too much to overpower the rest of the soup. The pieces of tripe are tender to the bite, and with some rolled up corn tortillas, you've got a real winner. They also make several different kinds of burritos and tacos, and they are just as delicious as the rest of it. The burrito we normally get is filled with cheese, chorizo, bacon, and egg; and I promise, you will not need more than one. Even with all of this amazing food, you would think, "how could it get any better?".. but just to the put the cherry on top, the prices are extremely reasonable! You won't break the bank feeding just yourself, or even the whole family. It's everything you wanted from a small Mexican, homestyle restaurant. Trust me, they do it right here.

Best Mexican breakfast in town. I go there every time I'm in town. Fresh homemade tortillas and family owned. Never disappoints me.

Lots of good options on the menu, and I was craving their famous cinnamon roll pancakes, but then a server brought out migas to a table and I immediately knew I wanted that instead. Here, it's a little opposite from most places, you gotta pick your seat first then order as the seats, especially the tables, are hard to come by at times. There are plenty stools along the window but the tables are better and most tables are family style so you'll likely be meeting someone new. I also added a chocolate bread pudding for myself which looked really good. The rest of my group ordered the granny's breakfast with sausage, 2 scrambled eggs and Benny's tostadas. The food comes out surprisingly quick for as busy as they are. Everything was so delicious! I ate a little of the bread pudding at the restaurant, then eventually ate the rest over the course of the next few hours. Yum! This restaurant is highly recommended!

After you finally order you get to try and find one of their dirty tables to sit at then wait way too long for terrible food. The food could not be more terrible, this is what they call biscuits and gravy and it tasted as bad as it looks, I think the best way to describe the color of the gravy is orange, which is weird. I had one bite of the biscuit and gravy and it was so bad that the stray cat that jumped on our table did not even want it, but it could have also been because of all the flies because the little fly fan at our table did not work but it also might have been from the constant smell from the sewer drain located right in the seating area. My wife had a chicken bagel egg sandwich- not good....all our food went in the trash. This is not a restaurant it is a disaster, do not believe the positive reviews.

Birthday dinner at Gonzalo's! I can cheerfully report that we had the usual excellent food,…read moreservice, and ambiance this evening. We, like many other diners, ate outside - the window for eating al fresco is narrow so we do it while we comfortably can. We were tempted to get Roman artichokes for our appetizer knowing how delicious they are, but instead we ventured out and got the calamari puttanesca. Good decision? Absolutely! The squid was tender, the capers lent delightful brininess to the intense-in-a-good-way San Marzano tomato sauce. The only thing that would have improved the dish is if we'd had the smarts to order bread with it to sop everything up. Next time, next time... Dan being Dan had to have Greek salad. We shared it and I must say that I really appreciate their approach to this ubiquitous offering. It has feta, but its presence is not heavy handed. Don't get me wrong - I adore feta but sometimes it overtakes a salad. There were Persian cucumbers, small yellow tomatoes, thinly sliced onions, very fresh, crisp lettuce, and no pepperoncini! Now you might think the absence of peppers would be a bad thing but I beg to differ. Too often restaurants use them and they turn out to be tough and woody. For the record, of all brands we've bought, DeLallo is consistently the best. For mains, because I am just about incapable of not getting it, I got the boscaiola. If you haven't had it, get it! It's a stunningly well balanced dish of pappardelle, mushrooms, and confit chicken. It is perfection in a bowl. Dan got the rigatoni alla vodka with confit chicken. The rigatoni entree is what we saw on Facebook some time back that made both of us think that we really, really needed to give Gonzalo's a try. Pro move, y'all, pro move! Drinks: old fashioned for me and a whiskey sour for Dan and glasses of Pinot grigio. Did we have room for dessert? No, and that made me a little sad. But we'll be back! Dan has a birthday coming up...
