This is one of the only places open Sunday morning in Galveston. We came here because it's a decent place. Food was good. It wasn't really salted but then again, you're already eating some dense calorie food that isn't great for your heart, so salt at your own risk. They use real eggs for the meals-bonus. Pancake was huge so we all shared that in addition to two other plates. Less is more here. read more

Why is this place a hidden gem? It should be on the "must visit" list for Galveston. I wish I remembered the name of my lunch entree because it was amazing and very cost conscious! The salsa was so good you could drink it!! The queso was heavenly. It was so good I poured it on my tacos. The tacos were not greasy at all - they clearly drain the meat prior to loading up the taco. On top of all of this mouth watering delicious food, the service was spot on! The waitress carried herself like she was the manager or owner; that level of attentiveness. Recently tried this place for an early morning breakfast before leaving on a cruise. Great for breakfast tacos and quick service! We picked this place based off of other Yelp reviews & learned they are under new management. Yet, the menu really hasn't changed. The only disappointment was the egg & nopales taco. However, that is one me! I dropped it all the inside on the floor trying to take my first bite. I hope to try again the next time in Galveston. read more

The food and service was pretty good. This is why I gave 1 star. Their menu shows one price but they charge another... that is false advertising, plain and simple. The lady who waited on me explained that they charged less if you pay cash. Now while I accept thst every restaurant, indeed every place of business can implement their own way of accepting payment, for example say cash only; what I do not accept that as the customer I was not informed of this at the onset of my dining experience. If I knew this I would have either gone to get some cash or more than likely gone to another place where they simply charge one price and take both cash or cars. As a customer I have a right to be informed of how I am to pay for services rendered. As a business owner, it is their responsibility to make sure the customer is informed of said payment policy, either by word of mouth or some sign posted where I can clearly see it. Visited on Labor Day 24'. The little place is well-lit, clean, and spacious. The service was immediate, and pleasant, but the real star is that FOOD!! This Mexican-American confirms: this is LEGIT Mexican food breakfast! The machacado and barbacoa plates were DELICIOUS! Both the flour and corn tortillas are made in house, and are AMAZING. Wish I had pics of the food, but alas, it was devoured quickly. It was pricey, but I would return again whenever I come back to this area! read more

One of my goto Mexican Restaurant for breakfast and lunch in Galveston. The place is simple but quaint. The service is always friendly and excellent. Have tried their Huevos Rancheros and breakfast burritos. They were delicious and deceivingly filling. I also tried their Abuelo's plate for lunch. It was a hearty plate which consist of a chicken enchilada, carne guisada with rice , refried beans, Pico de Gallo and guacamole. Delicious!!!! read more

There are a few places on Galveston Island that my family and I feel we must visit whenever we come into town, and this little Mexican eatery is one of them. This restaurant has become a well known spot for people from both in, and out of town, and with good reason. It is hard to find Mexican restaurants that can deliver the certain "je ne sais quoi" most of us of Hispanic background seek when looking for truly homestyle cooking, and this place has got that down to a T. We normally enjoy coming to La Nopalera early in the morning. They throw down some very appetizing breakfast plates that make me feel like I've traveled back in time to my grandmas home in Mexico. The rustic breakfast is packed with flavor and the touch of love we look for in comfort food. I will usually go with the barbacoa breakfast plate; a large serving with smooth refried beans, large cubes of hearty fried potatoes, two eggs (I take mine over easy), a generous amount of tender barbacoa, and finally two warm flour tortillas to bring it all together. It's a simple yet very difficult dish to properly execute, more specifically the barbacoa. The menudo of course is another favorite here. Just like any recipe, everyone has their own version and make it to their liking. The menudo here is full-flavored and well rounded out without overstepping the spice too far. It has enough spice to flavor the broth, but not too much to overpower the rest of the soup. The pieces of tripe are tender to the bite, and with some rolled up corn tortillas, you've got a real winner. They also make several different kinds of burritos and tacos, and they are just as delicious as the rest of it. The burrito we normally get is filled with cheese, chorizo, bacon, and egg; and I promise, you will not need more than one. Even with all of this amazing food, you would think, "how could it get any better?".. but just to the put the cherry on top, the prices are extremely reasonable! You won't break the bank feeding just yourself, or even the whole family. It's everything you wanted from a small Mexican, homestyle restaurant. Trust me, they do it right here. read more

I had the Migas a la mexicana that came with a side of flour tortillas. Those flour tortillas are good enough reason to return. Service is everything! Food was great but the service was Horrible! Our first waitress was Anabell, OMG she was Horrible! She started to take our order and in the middle of taking it, another family walked in the she knew because their kids were friends! As I started to give her our drink order she saw them walk in immediately grabbed another waitress from the other side and said here you take their order I'm gonna go take their order and she left to go take the other families order! Omfg! Our order was finally taken after a while and then it took about 45 minutes to get our food!!! I guess I have to say you get what you pay for. My breakfast was only like 5.50, came with 2 eggs, beans, pappas, 1 bacon and tortillas. Beans taste like it came from a can, pappas under cooked, tortillas were huge but hard. Eggs and the one bacon were decent. It's kinda hard to mess up on eggs though. When I want a Mexican breakfast, this is where I head. Small, family owned with solid basics and dependable menudo on the weekends and I really enjoy their refried beans and tortillas. If I didn't like this place so much, and the people there, I would use the phrase "whole in the wall" but because I do, let's say "well lived in atmosphere". Walked in this place around 2pm after found the nice reviews about this place. It was smaller than I thought about 8-9 tables. I was disappointed that they don't have fish tacos on the menu but I quickly settled on Shrimp Relleno which is a new item to me. The chips were warm which went very well with the a spicy salsa. Shrimp Relleno was deliciously spicy. I loved the tender shrimp mixed with cheese and the straight burning hot sauce. The tortillas was soft and warm. Adding a bit guacamole, my little wrap was prefect. The service was pretty nice. Oh, they don't have jamaica nor rice water which I was a bit surprised. read more

Food quality has gone down, very disappointing! 2020 has been hard on the industry, but... This is info from two different dining-in and one carryout experience since the summer. Flour tortillas in tacos served to hard to but through. Meat flavor gone down. The worst: rice and beans prepared with no onions or peppers. Popular place and for good reason! We had breakfast here and it was delicious and very reasonably priced. Huevas a la Mexicana included eggs with vegetables, potatoes, beans, and fresh handmade tortillas with side of hot sauce. Also order a burrito with chorizo that was stuffed full and had great flavor. The restaurant has several parking spots and adequate street parking. Inside was clean and well maintained. Service was quick and oh so friendly. I don't do well without Mexican food. We were in Galveston at the San Luis Resort. Food there is a precious commodity, so I took to Yelp for options. Nopalera is pretty close. We had gorditas, tacos, and enchiladas for dinner one night. All very capable and hit the spot. I went back another morning for breakfast tacos and they were great. The salsa isn't memorable and their food, while capable, isn't life affirming awesome. I'm not complaining though. We called in and service was quick. No to go errors either. read more
