In life, good things are in balance. But when you bite into a sandwich, and you taste mostly veggies, there's a problem. Today, I got 2 sandwiches for my work day. The Seamless App misses my business, so they gave me a promo discount to try Northbeach Sandwicheez at Jackson St in Oakland. My orders were: 1) The Roadhouse, Grade (3/5): Served cold. Menu reads- "Pastrami, roast beef and pepper jack cheese, topped with the works: Lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, pepperoncini, real mayo, mustard, extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper." Yes, the meat is there, but it doesn't dominate the sandwich. I like pastrami, but I barely tasted any. Lots of crunchy pickles, tomatoes, and mayo. 2) The Godfather, Grade (4/5): From the menu: "Italian prosciutto, ham, salami, mortadella, provolone and the works." Good sandwich, I liked it better than the Roadhouse. Nice balance of flavors. Service: N/A......fast, direct delivery by Seamless/Grubhub. Cold sandwiches travel well as takeout. Overall Grade 3.5, round up to a 4. Would I order again? No.....not when there's places like Ike's, Jonathan's, Togos, and Cheese Steak Shop around. read more

A few weeks ago I randomly came to this Sandwicheez and got a Godfather. It was a decently sized sandwich, and I couldn't complain about the taste. The service was fairly quick and easy, and the parking on the street was easy enough. My issue is with the hours of operation. I work nearby at the Port of Oakland (not for them, but less than a mile away on port grounds), and got there around 2:30. Yell still shows the place as being open, as did google, but when I got there I was turned away due to them being closed. My issue with hours of operation is simple: you are a sandwich shop. Your primary customer is more than likely the lunch crowd. Why are you closing before 3pm? I normally don't take a late lunch, but sometimes I have to due to work. I'd call 2:30pm still within the range of "lunch". Now 3, 4pm? That isn't lunch. But 2-2:30? Yes, that's still lunch, just a late one. Kind of disappointed to say the least. read more

I like this North Beach Deli a lot. Not one bad experience. I often come here repetitively for the same exact sandwich. They make it so perfect with lots of care and toppings, so much that I haven't tried the one located in Broadway Square. They have really good sandwiches and the bread is always so fresh. It never cuts your gums like some places. They have a variety of sandwiches to choose from but I always only order the turkey avocado on wheat. The staff know it's me simply by my lunch order. It's always such a big sandwich, I can never finish it. The original North Beach Deli I usually visit is in San Francisco. They are very good also. I was surprised when I found this location so close. It's down the street from Amtrak and Jack London Square. There is another location on Broadway, it is not far from me either, maybe even closer in distance. I don't prefer the Broadway location because parking can be stressful. But it's really convenient for commuters and people who use public transportation such as Bart and bus. read more

You know how Aaliyah taught us that if first we don't succeed, we must dust ourselves off and try again? Well, that lesson comes with a caveat: sometimes you try, and you try, and you friggin' try... And it just doesn't work. That pretty much describes my relationship with North Beach Deli, a little deli located in (or is it near? I have no idea about boundaries. In life or in geography) Jack London Square. I've tried a hot sandwich, I've tried a cold sandwich, and then I've always tried not to be disappointed when it actually meets my mouth. But it always fails. Which is a dang shame because the ladies behind the counter are so sweet, so friendly that I want an excuse to come back and bug them. Unfortunately, I can't frequent a food spot based on customer service alone. I should say that a lot of folks I know come here and enjoy their sammies, so maybe I just need to experiment a little more. Sadly, even as an Aaliyah fan, I'm not sure I can keep dusting myself off. This place is hidden on side street amongst the condo developments in Jack London Square. SUMMARY: They make a decent sandwich at a reasonable price. I tried a basic turkey sandwich. The basic turkey is a great way to gauge the quality of a hoagie shop. The turkey here is relatively fresh, the toppings are plentiful, and the sandwich was made fast. The cost was $8.50, which is not bad for a custom made sandwich. They do accept Apple Pay, which is super handy. One small thing is that the bread-to-meat ratio is a bit high on bread. I'd like to see a little less bread on there, and a little more meat. If that was the case, I could up the score to 5 stars. I do realize that the protein is likely the most expensive component of a sandwich, and this may not be feasible the North Beach Deli price point. read more

Been here many times. Value for price is the main reason. I have one big complaint - I really wish they would upgrade their bread game. If they had better bread(or started making their own in house)...they would take over the entire Bay Area. I know they do a bunch of corporate orders at scale...but quality bread is what REALLY builds a loyal sandwich business. Hope to see them keep growing. North Beach Deli is essentially an ordering station with a chip stand and a referigerator full of drinks. the rest of the shop is the back room where the sammies are prepped. menu: mostly regular, vegeterian and gourmet sammies, chips, salads and drinks. eat: Sicillia(6.95 up $1 from online) on dutch crunch, (choice of many breads) -had proscuitto, salami, marabello, provolone(1 slice), chopped olives, sweet bell pepper, olive oil -sammie had a lot of dough and kind of greasy tasting -some peppers would have been nice. 3.5 stars crumbs: -online prices outdated, sammies now $1-$2 higher, leaving at 3 stars -outdoor seating at plastic chairs and tricolored tables -can order by phone -new menu in february, oh, that's NOW! -greasy aftertaste read more

I come here a whole lot more often than my checkins show! I love this little place as it is perfect for a quick grab and go sandwich or wrap and back to the office. It's nothing fancy but the sandwiches are good and the service is polite and fast. If you want to eat there, there are three tables on the side walk. If you work in Jack London Square and need a quick bite, this is your place. The Chicken Caesar Wraps are excellent. read more

I pick-up my lunch here quite often. I always get the avocado caprese salad with chicken. --huge portion, reasonable price, healthy and delicious! This place is pretty popular during lunch hours, but the service is fast. There are some tables right outside the store but limited. Had the Buffalo Chicken with: Pepper Jack Cheese, Ranch Cole Slaw, Roasted Peppers, Onion with Pomegranate Lemonade. I really enjoyed both. In fact, when I was looking at the menu, the only sandwich I wouldn't like would be the Texas BBQ b/c I'm not a big fan of BBQ sauce. I ordered the Pacific Tuna sandwich on wheat with the side salad. The sandwich was fresh, delicious, and packed full of tuna salad. I've been to this place a handful of times since it has opened and have never had any of the problems others have reported. The storefront is tiny (no inside seating) and the outdoor seating does crowd a small sidewalk, but since I always get my food to go, that's what I'll base my review on. They're only open limited hours 10-3 m-f (I think). I've never had any problems that others have seen with the staff. I think I've only interacted with two younger people, but they've always been fast and friendly with their service. The sandwiches are well portioned and their bread is fresh. Their menu presents a good variety (with several vegetarian options) and their cookies are fresh-baked and delicious. If you're expecting strong Italian authenticity I think you'll be disappointed, but it's still a solid sandwich shop. read more

A nice, solid alternative to other nearby sandwich places. Worth going to for some variety. Straightforward sandwich menu that leans towards italian flavors--for example, the "35 dollar sandwich" is prosciutto, coppa, fresh mozzarella, sun dried tomatoes, sweet bell peppers, olive oil. And at $8, it's the most expensive thing on the menu. Nothing revolutionary, just solid sandwiches. The service has been almost cloyingly helpful and solicitous every time i've been there. My friend ordered the last cookie once, and it broke while it was being lifted into a bag. With 5 apologies the server also put an extra brownie in with the broken and perfectly edible cookie. They're constantly asking if there's anything else you'd like. They could use a wider selection of bread options, but it sounds like that might change. Also, they get pretty slammed at lunch time -- phoning ahead is a good idea. A large crew from my office have become steady fans, so the word on the street is positive. read more

The Good: Sandwiches are pretty awesome and they have a semi extensive list of pre-constructed sandwiches. *I've discovered that it's often difficult for them to customize sandwiches; so you are forced to get it EXACTLY how it's listed on the menu which can be annoying. Recommendation: $35 dollar sandwich Salads are actually AWESOME; the veggies are fresh and there are tons of options. They are also moderately priced at $5.50 ish compared to $7 at Sierra. I love the tuna; it isn't mayonnaise based but just fresh tuna w pepper and olive oil- most def. my favorite item there. Recommendation: Tuna salad Pizza: Super thin crust and not too oily; good choice for a change of pace. The Best: So I work around the corner and I can be notoriously flighty about leaving my purse in random places. I left my purse outside on the back of a chair and didn't discover it was missing until well after closing. The next day I went back and the cashier had kept my purse safe. I tried to tip her extra for helping me out and she insisted on adding the tip to the regular tip jar (even though I requested she keep it for herself) because they share everything. I thought that was pretty cool. :) Con's: 1. The first time I went here they actually forgot the meat in my sandwich but it's okay. 2. The wait time here is atrocious. Seriously we've waited up to 15 minutes at a given time. If you are in a rush I wouldn't bother stopping here; or really anywhere near here for that matter. She was right, the chicken Florence sandwich is a thing of beauty, it's hot spicy with melty cheese, I had mine on Dutch crunch and it's just perfect! Dare I say it's better than anything I've had from Ike's. The place is tiny, so eat outside or take it to go. Lunch Deal includes a fountain soda and premium chips for only $2.75 on top of your sandwich order. They also have what looks like killer East Coast thin crust pizza slice and a soda for $4.60! Thanx North Beach Deli for making our office party a hit with the staff; I like how you were on time as many good outfits that we order from are good people but just can't deliver as promised; our lunch break is only 1 hour long but really ends up being about a 40 minute window. so we are a little burnt out over empty (stomach) promises.
