My cat Janet has been having diarrhea on and off for months ever since being treated by another vet for a severe infection. I was seen right away and the actual doctor, not an assistant, treated my cat. He gave her a few shots and I was out the door in just 10 minutes with all the medicine and special food I needed. The total bill was a bit higher than I expected for what was performed, but I didn't try and haggle at all because I was happy with how quick and easy the experience was. I didn't have to wait in my car for an hour like the other vets I've taken her to during covid. Whatever he gave her seems to have helped her right away and she's running around doing cat things again. Very happy, I think he figured out what is wrong with her. They were quick and efficient and Dr. Spellman was upfront with me about everything. He gave me straight answers and didn't try to upsell me on anything. He also was upfront about the prices of the antibiotic shot and how much my total would be. That way there was no surprises at the check out desk! The first experience we had was great. But then after my dog was hospitalized we had a follow up with papers that stated he needed to be tested for a specific disease which they believe he had from his symptoms. The vet did NOT order the test only provided injection antibiotics. 5 days later he had another crisis into the hospital a 2nd time. Tests confirmed he had Addison's disease. If he would've been tested like the hospital suggested then the results would've come in 24/48 hours he would've been put on medication and been fine. I called to speak with him ask why wasn't the tests done but he never called back the next day I called again and spoke with Sarah she insisted I tell her what's going on she seems controlling, heartless about the situation and was unprofessionally rude. Due to this vets lack of care and communication he had to suffer again. Our dog is very special in our hearts. I've been seeing this vet for over three years now, and I can't recommend them enough. Dr. Spellman is very kind, straightforward, and professional, and the staff are great. Sergio always takes my cat carrier and the big bag of food out to my car after appointments and keeps my cat calm during the exam, which I appreciate. They helped my cat Tito through a urethral blockage two years ago, and also were very kind through the care of my aging dog. My husband and I just relocated to Austin for work and have two Chihuahuas, one of which is pretty old and the other rescued from a very abusive situation and high strung. Both needed their nails trimmed, and my younger girl always cries when vets touch her feet, making a simple visit very stressful for her. She also needed to get updated on her shots, so I was worried it was going to be very hard on her in a new city with a new vet having to get all this work done. When I found Dr. Spellman online while searching for vet clinics in our new area, I instantly was impressed at all the wonderful reviews. I scheduled an appointment for both girls. When I arrived, a staff member was instantly out in the parking lot, helping me get the dogs under control and into the building (they may be small, but when trying to get both out of a car while they're hopping around and trying to run off and smell everything, it can be a handful). I was grateful for the kind helping hand. I was seen right away, ushered into an exam room, where they worked on our older pup first. She was almost completely at ease with Dr. Spellman and his team, and my worry started to dissipate. Sure enough, when it was my other girl's turn, they were so gentle and so understanding of her. The best part was: she sat still for the exam and the shots, and barely squirming for the nail trim!! I was so impressed! Dr. Spellman and his entire team were so sweet to my girls. I had to have both of my cats declawed due to having a little one in the home. Unfortunately both of my cats are older and I was concerned about the pain this would put them through. The doctor advise me as well but this would be painful for them because they are older as well as bigger cats. He took great care and ensuring that he did the best job possible and... Do not take your dog here for anything other than basic checkup or shots.... Dr. Spellman was the only vet I could find to do an emergency tail amputation after my dog got her tail stuck in a door. He is about a billion years old and the place looks like a hovel from the 70's but the other good review I decided to let him do this basic surgery. He fucked it up leading to tissue necrosis, my dog being in a cone for over 5 weeks (waiting for a real vet), having to undergo anesthesia twice, and causing me a bunch of stress. What was quoted as a $600 surgery turned into a $1000 with tests and additional meds due to the botched surgery. The pet population is exploding in Austin - most vets are busy as hell, I guess I should have known that if he had time to see her that fast there was a reason. This morning I woke up to find a weird bump on my dog's foot. Since our normal vet isn't open on the weekend, I looked for a well reviewed office where I could get in quickly. North Lamar Veterinary seemed to fit the bill. The office was shabby but the receptionist was friendly, and we were shown to a room. The trouble started when we saw the vet. I informed him that my dog has recently started being fearful of new people and experiences, and needs people to go slow. He didn't really respond to this and asked me to weigh him. I did. I showed him a photo of the bump for ease then he asked me to put my 75 pound dog on the table. With assistance from the tech I did but didn't understand why this was necessary. My dog was not happy and growled at the tech. He has never bitten anyone, but is a big guy with a loud bark and deep growl, so he can be intimidating. I held him close though and no one was in any danger. The doctor explained the diagnosis and gave him an antibiotic shot. It would have been ok if not great had it ended there. After taking my pup outside for a fresh air break I came inside with a couple of more questions. When I asked what to do in terms of his exercise restrictions, he responds, "You should put him in classes because you've got a problem on your hands." He also mentioned Prozac in the same breath for a dog he had just met. I've put countless months into his training and recent fearful behavior is actively being worked on with two different trainers. This dog is my life. I explained this and he went on to say how I should consider a house call vet and that he seemed dangerous. My dog bit no one, just growled and barked in a scary new place. When I started crying in the office he half heartedly offered me tissues. I refused and went to pay. Meanwhile my dog puts his paws up on the counter and wags his tail at the receptionist, the only redeeming person in this whole place. I left in tears and will never return to this Clinic. I'm writing simply because I don't want anyone to have the experience I did. If you have a dog who is even a little afraid of the vet, take your business and your beloved pet elsewhere. read more
