Our third time for dinner at the North Star, and our first disappointment. Our dinner with friends started well, being seated on time at what we thought was a nice table in the dining area. However, the noise level was intolerable throughout the meal, a combination of bad acoustics, a too lively bar crowd, and a din of dishes and silverware clattering in the kitchen. Virtually impossible to speak and hear across the table! The food choices (three fish, one soft-shell crabs) were fine, but lacking in heartiness, with just minimal help from a few snow peas and a tiny portion of basmati rice. Everything was well prepared, but lacking in zest. We want to like the restaurant, as it has the feel of a good roadside inn, but not the hearty comfort style food. Perhaps a burger and beer at the bar might be a better option. read more

I go here a lot because I live one mile away and this place always delivers. It is always consistent whether you get a steak or fish this place is always solid.The appetizers are very good for large groups the food is a bit on the pricey side but it is worth it. My wife and I went to North Star last Saturday evening and very much enjoyed it. My wife started with the asparagus salad, which I sampled, and it was unusual and very tasty. I had the sauteed calamari appetizer, which I ordered, because most restaurants serve it only fried (North Star also serves a fried calamari appetizer), and I can definitely recommend it. I ordered the butternut squash agnolotti, which was very good, but also very rich, so I ate half of it and switched with my wife, who had ordered the sauteed halibut with fennel, which was delicious. For dessert, we split an order of fig ice cream with fruit. The restaurant has an air of country casual, yet sophisticated. The service is very good, and the presentation of the food is elegant. read more

The pork chop was tough, as pork chops can be. The scallop was excellent in a great sauce, though it could have had more flavor. The polenta and mushrooms that came with my pork chop were excellent, and the sea bass my dining partner had was out of this world. The waiter never asked me if I needed a beer refill, and we weren't offered coffee with our dessert, I'd say this is a must for a restaurant at this price point, still, the food was good. read more

Went to North Star last week to enjoy a weeknight meal and wine at the bar with my daughter who was in visiting. The bar was full but a couple was almost finished so we ordered wine and stood waiting and hungry for twenty minutes. All of a sudden two regulars walked in and the bartender threw us a fake apology and lied to us that they had been waiting. When I questioned that they just walked in he made up that they had called from car. Well, the restaurant has overpriced merely average food to begin with but we were there for a bite, wine and decent ambience. I hope the rude bartender got the tip he wanted from his regulars. Was it worth losing a customer and all that customer's friends? I don't think so. read more

This used to be a "go to" place for us and never disappointed. However dinner last night changed that. We had the Halibut, which was so over cooked that it was chewy. Unfortunatley we hadn't eaten all day so we weren't interested in waiting for another one when the server asked. And the mangement did the right thing. We also had the Veggie "Steak" which is listed as Vegetarian and Vegan. But it comes with Burrata on it. To my knowledge milk isn't Vegan, and Burrata is made with milk. Despite that, it was very tasty. The service was great but unfortunatley the food seems to be going downhill. What a shame becasue this was a favorite place of ours. read more

We sat outside on a lovely covered porch and the service was very good. We ordered a bunch of appetizers for dinner. They were all made fresh with good ingredients but for me the flavoring just missed the mark. The iceberg wedge salad had all the right stuff (minus bacon) but the dressing was quite bland. Diver scallops were difficult to eat with long strands of kale? and a cheese crouton layered on top of the 2 scallops. The flavor of coconut milk was covered up by too much soy sauce, I'm guessing. Expected much more. Ambiance is good and service friendly but not refined. The duck was 60-70% fat and the meat so chewy I couldn't finish it. Wife ordered filet medium rare and it arrived a charred hockey puck. Sent it back (which we never do) and 20 minutes later the new steak was rare and flavorless. Should have been taken off bill but wasn't. Not even an offer of dessert or anything for massive inconvenience. Wine list is short and mediocre at best. And to top it off the prices are astronomical for such a casual fare even if it was good , which it wasn't. read more

We've been eating here for a year from time to time since it's not far from our home in New Canaan. Actually, our son already knew of it even before we moved here, as they have great live music during the week. The food is better than average by a mile, great tomato soup and fish, and the desserts are amazing. I will say that the service can be a little on the attitude-y side sometimes, and a little neglectful when things are busy but that's understandable- an additional server would help. We'll be coming back. Cozy atmosphere and my wife is never cold like in some other places during the winter and that's a definite plus! read more

while this restaurant sits literally in the heart of a sleepy town, it has a certain understated charm. its dark .. you need your phone light to read the menu. its small and so it does not take much for it to get loud. they have bands on certain nights which is absolutely amazing as they cram them into a space no bigger than a small shallow hallway. the food is good. tasty. BUT ..and this is a big BUT , this place is priced in the same range as a 4 star restaurant with most entrees being north of $35. Your cheapest option was a $25 risotto . this would be a perfect little spot if average full dinner and drinks ran in the $50 range, but at about $90 per person (includes splitting an appetizer and dessert, and drinks), it's more of a special occasion spot EXCEPT of course that its not THAT special. read more

Pros: the Sea Bass is incredibly good. Charred on the outside, while creamy on the inside; Good,vibrant atmosphere. Con's: the waitress kept rushing us. It was Friday night, but this is not a fast food restaurant; Expensive . $35 for the bass, which while great, is small. $14 for the beet and cheese salad that is truly tiny. My wife got the iceberg wedge and I got the scallops to start. I then had the seabass for entrée and my wife got the duck breast. The food was fine. Overall, the portions were a tad on the small side, and nothing on our plates screamed $35-$38 entrée. Went there tonight for the first time. The meal was wonderful. The salads were crisp and tasty. The wine was good. I had the Sea Bass and it was one of the best prepared fish meals I ever had in Westchester. The portion was small but perfect in retrospect. The desserts were top notch. The service was good. The owner and staff are attentive and caring. My wife and I plan to return there soon. The prices were high for some items, but comparable to many fine Westchester restaurants. The only reason we are giving it two stars is because our server was fantastic. She was nice, informative, helpful, everything you want in a server, but the food was disappointing. I had the "CHICKEN DINNER SPECIAL", with greens and fries. The greens were sour and cold. I could barely see the fries in the plate because they were so little and they were cold as well, and finally the chicken was not worth the $22 dollars this meal cost. My partner had the burger which was perfectly cooked however the bun was old and dry and not toasted and the cheese was not melted. Why cant people melt the cheese???? Finally the fries looked like remnants from the bottom of the frying basket. We actually have been to the restaurant several times and we usually like it. But this time not so much. Food is so, so and pricey. The place to go now is clearly the Inn at Pound Ridge and that is where you will see a lot of us past (female esp) customers of North Star. It is rarely packed here anymore. The live music offered on Thursdays would be a great experience if not for one of the owners who hits on all the women who are not with men. He is inappropriate and it makes you wonder why the restaurant hasn't figured out why they are losing their female customers! We went to North Star for New Year's Eve thinking it will be a nice place to spend the New Year. We sat at the bar and our bar tender seemed like he really didn't want to be working that night. Not once did he attempt to come and pour more wine for us or ask us if there was anything else we wanted. My Husband ordered the rack of lamb special which is litterally 2 bites and at $35 a plate we did expect something a little better. At 11pm, the restaurant was completely dead and they then turn off the heat and the restaurant became like a refrigerator whilst we were sitting there. We used to enjoy this restaurant but it is way too overpriced for what it is. We won't be going back. read more

I often forget about this place because it's a bit off the beaten path in Pound Ridge, but every time I go the food and service are great. The chef really comes up with some nice creations, and the menu frequently changes. He puts together odd combinations that really end up working well. My example tonight was a stir-fried side of tomatoes, brussel sprout leaves, and small onions...i'm not usually a sprout fan, but this combo was great! Another in my party had a seabass special with a wonderful cucumber based sauce that was out of this world. As always, my ribeye was done to perfection. Can't wait to return. Great place! read more

Our reservation didn't really seem to matter to anyone there - we ended up waiting 5 minutes for a host to greet us, then another 20 minutes for a table, and finally were put on stools in the bar. We split grilled calamari to start, and it was extremely so-so. But my swordfish and my wife's filet were terrific. All in all, it's better than you could hope for in the middle of nowhere we're grateful to have it nearby, and we will be back - but this place wouldn't stand a chance in Manhattan or even White Plains. read more

My partner and I walked into this establishment to have dinner on October 5, 2013 at 8pm. They clearly had open tables in their dining room. In fact, they had 3 open 2 tops with ample available waiters to serve us. Their extremely crass host looked at us as a gay couple and offered us two end seats at a very crowded bar. I explained I didn't want to sit at a bar to enjoy my dinner and his response was that h could not help us. He didn't give us a wait time, he didn't explain anything. He saw two gay men and literally refused to seat and allow us to eat in this establishment. It was absolutely disgraceful. I would recommend going to 123 restaurant where they d not segregate based on sexuality. Completely pathetic. Don't eat here. read more

I am hesitant to review this restaurant, because I have to give it a 5, and I am afraid that with all of the great reviews, it will get more difficult to get reservations, BUT this place has been great each time that I went. Excellent, friendly service and terrific food. Highly recommend the tuna tartare and the turkey meatloaf, but I haven't found anything that wasn't good. read more

I came here to grab a bite to eat at the bar before meeting up with someone on a drizzling Sunday evening. Came here around 5:30 just in time and figured I'd grab a nice dinner before heading to Mount Kisco. The bar area was very packed and there was only one empty seat and grabbed it. As soon as I sat on that empty seat the bar patron next to me seemed a bit annoyed and turned his head and just stares me down and I caught on to that I asked if he needed something and he rudely replies back, "Well someone was sitting here" and me quickly responds "Well if someone was sitting here why didn't you say something in the first place?" the guy next to me says "Well I thought you'd know by now." At that point I know longer felt comfortable or better yet welcome in this establishment although the bartender did make me feel at home I will say that despite the fact I came in for a quick bite to eat. In the end I got a lobster roll with a side of cole slaw and house made potato chips plus a glass of chardonnay. Very small portions for a high price in of course Westchester of all places. I've paid more reasonable prices for smaller portions. If I wanted to may that much on my bill I would've driven out to Greenwich or Darien. Never coming back for a dinner service again. Other than that this establishment seems like a nice place to come for drinks I would make an exception in that case. read more
