There is a Northgate closer to my house but it is much smaller than this one. I honestly was floored when I walked in here. The smell of amazingly fresh and delicious Mexican baked bread filled the air. It was decadent, honest to goodness it was so amazing to smell that. As I browsed, I realized that I stepped into a Mexican goldmine. Every single aisle was full of great items, fresh and delicious! I noticed their cake selection was plentiful, some were filled with fruits, custards, lots of flan, sweet breads, corn breads, buñuelos, fresh tortillas. The meat section was also great, shelves were well stocked and it was very clean. There was also lots of homemade salsas, tamales, horchatas in various flavors and get this, strawberry tamales? I also noticed it was a smorgasbord of ceviche, shrimp cocktails and lots of displays full of so many great items. If you need Mexican pots made of stone, they are available here. Honestly anything you need is here. Piñatas available as well. The store was packed on a Sunday but the lines went pretty quick. Will for sure be back again! read more

I was with a few friends trying to shop last minute for a bbq when it seemed like the security had a temper. He kept looking at me and my friends with an angry face, even though he has seen us shop at that store multiple times. I felt uncomfortable as I was leaving he came outside and claimed that we were laughing at him. He proceeds to escalate and almost begs us to put hands on him just so he can fight us. Even though we have told him multiple times that there was bo problem and we weren't laughing at him. He then insults my friend by calling him fat. Once the manager came out he acted like the victim and made it seem like we harassed him. I stopped by on Wednesday evening for a cake. I heard from coworkers that the food and cakes are really good here. I usually buy my cakes from El Super grocery store but decided to stop by since this was close to my job and I would save time. Well this is the first and last time I buy a cake from here. The baker was nice and polite. So I give her 1 star and the cake was $14.99 so they get another star. I asked her to write Happy Birthday Hector on the cake and she wrote it in Spanish in very messy writing. I didn't notice this because she didn't show me the cake before she put it in a cute box with handles that made it look like a gift....well By the time I got home the writing was falling apart. I asked for 3 leches cake and it was I guess but only the top layer of the cake was moist, the bottom layer was dry. I thought all the cake was suppose to be wet. It seem more like half 3 leches cake. I'm glad my hubby was more excited about the 12 pack I bought him that he didn't even notice the messed up cake. Best Mexican grocery store!! Do not come hungry. You will literally want to buy EVERYTHING thing. They have ready to eat Tamales!! They have a Huge variety to choose from. This place has a lot of famous Mexican dishes. They even have fresh bread that they make daily. I got two chicken tamales and they were delicious. I also got some bread. Came here to pick up some cheap chicken and walked away with a crap load of other snacks. Got some 0.79 cents/lb chicken, Tamarindo soda (yumm), Moscato d'asti, and hot cheetos. Just a tip for coming here: 1. Check-out takes awhile. Reason being? Many customers have 2 transactions per, one for their regular food and one for their Alcohol; the drawbacks of EBT. Can't be buying alcohol with EBT, so therefore, it takes Forever and a day! 2. Customers can pay with their pay check. Sounds awesome right? Some-what. Pay with your pay check and then get change for it instead of going once to the market and then again to a bank. But it SUCKS being behinid these guys. Some of the change are $300-$600 bucks. Some of the cash register don't have that much and so they have to step away to get change. So... I would go to another cheap market if you can if you're pressed for time. read more

Almost 5 stars but they don't always have what I'm looking for sometimes. I do get my queso fresco fix here. Always at a decent price too. Like the wide variety of dry chilis available. Around 3-4 the bread is brought of fresh just about every time! And worth it! Don't skip on the salsa verde, also check the liquor, often they have great deals on tequila and such. read more

This is not my typical north gate market that I tend to visit but I was passing by and decided to stop and get wings for dinner. I headed over to get my usual one pound of wings and was greeted by a woman. ( I forget her name) and she was very kind and handed me my wings. As I was walking out I noticed they had hatch Chile's and a man, I believe his name was stave, came to help and asked if I needed anything. He was super helpful and lemme know the chicken they had was also cooked with the Chiles so I got some of that as well. I just finished dinner and Steve's suggestion did not disappoint. If you dont mind the culture shock of loud mexican music, crowded aisles, and feeling particularly different amidst a "little mexico" pocket in so cal, then come on in and join the fiesta! The parking lot ranges from "mercedes mexico get rich mommas to "cholo daddys in my mini van" as North Gate's clientele demographic is vast. Theres also the couple hoodrats lingering around by the cars, but dont be a afraid or feel uncomfortable. There is a security guard standing at the front of the store so the most that will happen is a random holler from a cholo because you didnt realize you left the house looking THAT good with your messy bun and tight jeans. The store is small so try not to run over the flash flood of cholo 5 year olds as their baby mamas are preoccupied sampling free carnitas. Why do I shop at north gate? 1. Cheap & Fresh Produce... I love to make fresh juices and lets face it- shopping for vegis and fruits at the white supermarkets (Ralphs, Henrys/Sprouts, ect) can be expensive! Every week there is a new item on "especial" Time after time I love getting the following deals: 2lb of fuji apples at .88 cents Boneless & Skinless chicken thigh meat 1.49/lb 3 small avocados for .99 cents 2lbs red and green grapes for 3.00$ 2lbs of tomatoes for .99 cents 3 cucumbers for .99 cents 2lb cantaloupe at .99 cents So the prices speak for themself. They staff is bilingual so if you don't know spanish don't be intimidated by how mexican the place truly is! On your way out, Santa Maria, the same catholic looking nun is always standing outside with a bucket. I came here Sunday afternoon on a quest for some good ceviche to bring to my friend Jackie's birthday party. I have to say it is a good thing that I am pretty fluent in Spanish. Otherwise, it would be confusing especially in the carnicería area (meat/deli counter). If you are attempting to get some meat/fish/cheese from the deli area, the first thing you need to be aware of is the number system. You have to get a number off the red "take a number thing" on the post or get it from the deli head standing in front who's calling out numeros. If you try to just flag someone down it is not gonna happen they serve people by number. After getting a number, I waited in hopes that other patrons in front of me would not devour the last of the ceviche. I was in luck, they called my number "numero once" yes eleven here I come ceviche! The woman asked me what I would like in Spanish, of course and I answer "dos libras de ceviche de camaron". At one point, they had two types of the ceviche there, the full shrimp and the ground-up shrimp. The ground up one was all out so I asked the woman for what they had there so I could be on my way. She kept asking are you sure are you sure? She told me if I waited fifteen minutes, they could make the other one. I decided since she kept needling me about getting the other one to wait. Maybe there was a reason she asked so many times, best to go with instinct. I went around the corner find some tostadas because you can't eat ceviche without them as well as avocado because avocado makes EVERYTHING better. Avocados were great, nice and creamy, and 4 for a dollar?! Are you kidding me? So CHEAP! Thirty minutes later, they call me up to the counter again & ask how much I wanted, weighed it out, & handed over the fresh ceviche. I got four avocados, two pounds of shrimp ceviche, 30-count package of tostadas, and crema Mexicana for $16. I got the ceviche over to my friend's house and it was a hit! Aside from the stares and "chinita" comments, this place is wonderful when you're trying to feed 3 kids on a budget!! Local supermarket had a decent selection of fresh produce that is reasonably priced. I love the queso fresco that they sell here. It is really good. They also have a bakery that sells some good pan dulce and bolillos. They also have a kitchen that sells prepared food. The food was also good as well. Come to this place all the time I love the sweet bread and the conchas but today I went in for some bread and when I went to ask how long the bolillo would take to come out I saw one of the employees drop a tray with dough and since the other employees were talking no one noticed and as I pretended to look at the cakes I saw her pick the dough up from the floor and continued her process of shaping it and placing it on the tray so it could go in the oven. As a person who works in the food industry I expected such a big branch like Northgate to train their workers right and make sure they know that isn't right. My favorite Mexican market (outside of Mexico). The good: It's relatively clean. They have almost (and by almost I mean better than most places but not nearly to my heart's content) everything I can get in Mexico. There is a whole wall of bags of dried chiles. I'm not scared of the parking lot like at my nearest Top Valu. They sell crumbled TVP in $2 bags. I come here once a year to get ponche fixings and always leave with a most delicious combination of fresh bolillo, sopes, queso fresco, avocado salsa, jicamas and tomatillos. I also leave with a severely inflated ego. The bad: I leave with a severely inflated ego because I always, always get hit on at least once. Usually more. I guess on a day where I'm feeling less that lovely this might fit into the good. Today it gets listed under the bad. Oh, and I wish their tamale masa were made without lard. But I guess lard-free masa preparada would be such stuff as dreams are made on. read more

I used to live and go to school down the street from this place. I'm always the only Asian in here. Even the only non Hispanic. But it's ok, I love it here. I can find cheap produce. Freshly made salsas and gucamole for parties. Once in a while I'll splurge and buy a box of bunuelos. They're so good but I probably gain like 5 pounds from it. Oh and they have a pretty good selection of imported mexican candies. Lead, NOMZ. read more
