If you want Mexican food or just groceries shop at the Northgate Market on Cherry in Long Beach. When my relatives flew in from Honolulu we took them to Northgate. They were overwhelmed and they wouldn't stop buying items you would normally get at any grocery store. I told them we were only getting items for dinner and since I was paying for it they should rely on my skills as a shopper. I got some Chile rellenos, tamales, chicken wings, Spanish rice, refried beans, and some salsa. We took everything back to the house and they loved it. What wasn't eaten were things they just had to have like chichirones, and octopus cerviche. Next time they can buy dinner. read more

This is a really nice Northgate. I think my only complaint is that the parking lot is a little small other than that everything is fabulous. This is the best place to get produce because their prices are actually reasonable $1 for a pound of limes is a lot better than $1 for 2 at other grocery stores. They also have the best tortillas and tortilla chips and plenty of other great premade Mexican foods. As a mainly Hispanic grocery store, they obviously don't have it all, but what they do have is great and really affordable. read more

I've been to different Northgate markets before but this is so far the cleanest, nicely organized, workers are friendly and nice. I went there on a Friday around 4:00 and there were plenty parkings. I can imagine, as other reviewers mentioned, that there might not be any parking available if you go there on weekends or after work hour such as past 17:00. They have warm Mexican prepared dishes that you can buy per pounds so you can try different type of dishes. They also have prepared meat, different types of fresh salsa per pounds. They offer fresh juices that is super good that I would love to drink everyday if I didn't need to worry about sugar! read more

Boyfriend and I went to check it out since it was grand opening weekend, lots of people and lots of cars but not as hectic as we thought it would be. AMP radio stand was right outside by the entrance when we were there and so were the workers who happen to give away free mop after you purchase anything 'crown' on aisle 4. The market was well organized and the customer service was quite nice. There are two entrance, one is to the grocery section and the other side is the food court. If you enter from the grocery section, you'll find the bakery on your right hand side. In the back is where the meat and seafood is located and the workers were helpful. Make sure to grab your number when it's busy because you wouldn't want to wait longer than you are suppose to. By the food court, there's lots of different kind of Mexican ceviche, snacks and a section of the store's homemade tortillas for $1.99. Yup, you can sure see them make it homemade in person. Must go there when they have promotions over the weekend. When we went, we bought 10 lb worth of chicken thigh/legs for only .39 cent lb!!! Yup for only $4 something. Too bad it was limited to per person, but it was a deal! If you live by Long Beach area and want to shop cheap with fresh products, I think you'll need to check this place out. read more

One of my favorite place to grab a bite to eat. This place is like a Wholefood but with Mexican food. They have everything and anything. I usually get a Torta or taco for lunch. They have 6 different kind of tamales. Don't stop by here if you are on a diet because everything is so good. This place has a hot bar from 6am to 10am for breakfast and 10am-9pm for lunch and dinner. Everyone here is friendly and super nice. read more

Today along with other occasions I opened my meat package to find a fly in between the meat in the package. This is just unacceptable. Previously before I have experienced the same meat packing in store, however being a kind person I just simple took the meat package to the butchers themselves and have showed them meat packed with a fly in it. Little did I know I would come home one day to the same actions of butchers not taking pride in there work to even allow such a thing. This is not only disgusting but horrible to families in the community to have to throw away meat they have purchased because of the carelessness, filthy treatment of the butchers. I took a picture of the meat with the dead fly in it and I will be reporting this to the health department. It saddens me that this store would allow this. They need to follow correct guidelines when packaging meat and take responsibility for this. Imagine someone not paying attention and cooking flies with there meat? I am very upset and disappointed in my local store. I will not be purchasing anything from here again. It's going to be sad because we love the bakery as a family, but this is unacceptable. I have attached a photo. I hope they can get it together and correct these issues for the safety and health of the community who shops here. I usually hit up Ralph's nearby to pick up flowers before heading to All Souls Cemetery. During my last trip, Waze had me take a different route to the cemetery and I noticed this market. I stopped in for flowers and noticed the fresh flowers in the floral department. Not only did the flowers look fresh, their prices were reasonable. I also overhead employees chatting and it sounded like they really care about quality. They make better tortillas and not the garbage they sell at Vallarta in Los Angeles. They're higher quality. I could tell by looking at the ingredients and touching the tortillas through the plastic bag. I highly recommend picking up the tostadas imported from Guadalajara. They're light and crisp, unlike any tostada I have tasted. I made a guac with mango and jackfruit from scratch and it tasted extra delicious on this tostada.They have organic products section as well. Reminds me of Super King market. Their produce section also looks great. They also carried exotic fruit like rambutan and dragon fruit. They carried cases of hard to find Topo Chico, the current water of choice of in-the-know food nerds. Northgate also carries wine from Valle de Guadalupe. I picked up a bottle of white since this is so hard to find in LA. I was so excited about this market that I texted my friend who lives in Long Beach to come check this place out. Ordered a simple 1/4 sheet cake with no design just a solid color. I was charged $56.99 and when I was cutting the cake there was a hair baked inside the cake. The cake piece with the hair was towards the end and I was told the only way to get a refund was by taking entire cake back even though my guests had already had the cake. This has slowly become one of my least favorite supermarkets. I don't think I'll be back. I used to enjoy coming here because it was clean and things seemed fresh. They carry all those little things you can't find at your local Ralph's or Von's. Then the problems began. Produce quality began to disappoint. Fruit flies began showing up everywhere. Sometimes the meats would spoil a day after purchase. Now, the pan dulce (sweet bread) is moldy day after purchase. It's one of those things where I ask myself, do I go back again over a couple of bucks to let them know again or do I just suck it up and call it a day, never go back? At this point I'd say, just be cautious of what you purchase at this store and check it well. As an update, The store was prompt in responding to this review. I'll leave it at that. read more

Usually hit this place up for fresh bollios and beans from the deli. Never had lunch there but always heard good things. Looks like they make three items tacos, burritos, and tortas. My coworkers ordered burritos. I opted to do the the Buffett counter. You grab a container and choose from a variety of dishes in the buffet. Just remember your being charged 6.99 a lb in that container, so it can get out of hand real quick. One good thing is you choose the buffet there is no line. I served myself rice and beans and a couple of platanos as sides. Then the main dish I got was chicharrón in salsa verde, little kick but good. And costillas with nopales in salsa verde, costillas seemed a little over cooked but it had good flavor. Also don't sleep on the aguas frescas there is a variety to choose from as well. Piña was my choice. I got out of there paying $15.00 bucks for a drink and meal. Not bad at all for lunch. read more

Attended a funeral nearby and if you go straight down going north and there is Northgate. I was pleasantly surprised to find everything was nicely and placed and clean. Lots of fruits and vegetables to choose from plus there's a restaurant area to pick up your food. I would recommend though that every employee who touches food does not wear fake nails, It's not sanitary. And everyone touching food they should wear gloves just wanna pass that along keep up the good job the store looks great. read more

This store is ok. The prepared food section is great. My complain is about the north gate tortillas and masa. They must be mixing something else with the masa. The tortillas get tough right after they are warmed up. They become hard and unusable. This place used to be my go to for fresh meat, tortillas and food for my parties. Not any more. Make sure you are bi lingual because they hardly speak or understand English at this store. The asada I ordered was old and should have been thrown out. Yet the lady still packed it up. Tortillas were scarce and absolutely NO pico de gallo or guacamole in the morning. This place has it all! Anything you want in terms of Latin groceries and this place has it. They have stuff that I have only seen in Mexico. My wife and I have driven to Tijuana just to go to the market to get actual Mexican groceries but now we don't need to, very exciting to have found northgate. The only reason I took off a star is because the hot food section was so so, the food was pretty salty but they do have an excellent salsa bar to make up for it. Big tip is to get an agua when you leave they have such a great variety, never a miss. Thank you northgate for bringing me so much of my favorite groceries. read more

I don't why I avoided to this market for a while. I used to always pass by the location and never went inside to see what goodies they had. I did come to this location a while back when it used to be a Buy Low and was not impressed. Well, color me stupid, because this place is great! When you first walk into the store you are welcome with the delicious smell of bread and sometimes they have a person handing out samples. The market itself has everything. Foodie down. Warning: Don't come here hungry esp. if you're only picking up a few items... I do prefer this location. It's bigger cleaner & more modern than the store on Pacific Ave. The prepared foods section is on point! U can sample before buying. There is a high turnover (esp weekends) so the food is fresh. Btw, they do their beans & Mex rice well. The pupusas are delicious I tried the bean n cheese one. I see these in the morning. The panderia is really good I love the cheese pie & the sweet potato empanadas. The agua fresca bar tho! Will hook you. Make sure to grab one (or more) to enjoy after shopping. My fave: spinach & pineapple. They sell the deliciously addictive Gloria's goat milk/pecan candy. Which is hard to find in stores. I shop here @ least once per week to spot new foods to try. Ok so lets just be real unless you are hispanic this place can for sure intimidate you. Its also in a "up and coming" part of north lb area. Dont be scared go! Everyone was very friendly and helpful to me (i dont speak Spanish)... I loved seeing new foods, produce (beautiful i may add) and insane meat, salsa and ceviche area. Store is very clean. Awesome! You can sample the ceviches and salsas. The have beautiful cuts if all sorts of meats not just marinated mexican spiced ones. Ok so i had a huge craving to do taco night and get me some fresh carne asada etc. Off to yelp i go to search for our local hispanic meat market. -purchased a bunch of random meats to try just 1/2 lb each: -carne asada -pork spicy not sure what it was called looks like ground pork -pollo -shrimp ceviche (yum fresh, clean.. No i did not get any food poisoning) -medium roasted salsa (i just salsa stalked and watched what most of the locals were buying and got that one.. Delish) -horchata yummy big to go cup for 3ish bucks -watermelon drink -some mini frosted pastries -huge avocados for 1.25 each (they were delish) -fresh still warm corn tortillas (sooo good... I'm writing about the prepared foods cafe here. The rest of the store is pretty awesome in terms of cleanliness and assortment but their "service deli" is pretty cool. My favorite spot is the ceviche counter/ great variety of freshly made ceviches and Agua chiles as well as freshly made salsas. They also have a cafeteria line where you can get a huge doblado taco for cheap or burrito, or guiso, etc. also have roasted chickens in the hot case as well as carnitas and the usual Tripitas, fried chicken, fried potatoes which I have not tried yet. The also have a great selection of Aguas frescas made there. You can put together a great authentic Mexican meal for pretty cheap. For a pinche gabacho like myself, it's really good. read more

Ceviche heaven! Every type of ceviche you can think of! Shrimp and avocado is my favorite! Very fresh and flavorful, just the right amount of spice and lime. Also try the camarones agua chile, they have 3 different types. This is like ceviche but a little more lime flavor, as the shrimp is left to cook in lime juice. All fresh ingredients, they will let you sample anything and everything and as many times as you want. Their agua Fresca is also very good and refreshing, there's a ton of flavors to chose from, from strawberry to watermelon and my favorite spinach and pineapple, and for the chilly days there is champurrado. Take it from a Mexican it's really good. Salsa bar is cool, something for everyone, red, green, habanero, tomatillo and all very tasty. This location is smaller than the one I like to patron in Norwalk. There was security at the door but no one greeted us. I was buying food for Taco Tuesday. I was disappointed to see that their guacamole cart wasn't manned when we arrived. I bought some by the deli in lieu. I felt that their staff wasn't very knowledgeable or didn't know how to convey the products description or offer suggestions. I was in the bakery and a Filipino woman was asking about the tres leches cakes. After hearing a prolonged conversation I offered in my 2 cents to the woman and told her how they make it, the consistency of the cake, and made other recommendations after she started she didn't like the idea of a soggy cake. In the cooked meats section the signs are not placed well so I had to ask the server which meat was which. Even she didn't know and had to ask someone.
