This northgate is pretty awesome. The ceviche is always delicious, they have the best tostada shells in the world (los pericos for $1 a package) and they got plentiful produce. They also have chicharrones. They have....chicharrones. The...the one that's just big pieces of pork deep fried in heavenly love, kissed by an angelic being comprised entirely of oil, born from the black abyss before creation and given life by the creator in an age before time began. They have....chicharrones that...when you bite into, fat and grease gently flows down your lips, like the words of a lover passing through the air into the heart of another. This grocery has it all!! For the first time im actually pleased with everything in this grocery store! It's starts with the cleanliness of the entire store and how well lit is. Their meat department is fresh looking and smelling!! The staff speaks English and Spanish so I don't have to be timid about asking for help in English. Today I picked up some carne asada, fresh guacamole, salsa fresca, macaroni salad and potato salad. The people who work the counters were so kind and helpful! They allow you to sample any salsa or guacamole. I love their selection of othe food items, beer and liquor. read more

Read the many reviews here and decided to skip my reg. Sunday morning grocery store and visit Northgate here instead. I am very much pleased with the kindness of their employees. They were welcoming, those that were cleaning and stocking asked if I needed any assistance, if I was able to find everything I needed. Wow! How welcoming and pleasing is that? Instead of buying the beans in a large aluminum tray, they were happy to accommodate me by placing the cooked beans (was so delicious by the way) into a smaller portion container. When it comes to customer service, these employees deserves a "Hi-5" top grade! The prices, well..... a bit pricey over all, but one thing for sure, I will be returning for a quick meal. I love Northgate! Been shopping at this location for a long time and never really had any major issues until recently. This review is totally based on the "food court" department. Not only has the portions diminished overtime but the quality of food and customer service has diminished as well. One day I came by on my lunch break and ordered a fried tilapia combo/"mojará frita. I basically got one hand full of beans and a handful of rice and an undercooked slimy whole tilapia that had probably been sitting there for half the day. I went back to the clerk and I told him that my fish didn't taste right and asked if he could give me a fresh one. He sort of brushed me off with an attitude grabbed my plate, went back to the same spot were more tilapia and gave me another slimy one..If it wasn't for the fact that I was hungry and needed to head back to work soon I would've asked for a refund. About a week later...I'm in the store with my daughter doing a basic grocery run and decided to grab a Cuban Torta to go. After 10 minutes of waiting right in front of the register a guy finally comes up, I tell him I just want a Cuban torta to go. Another 10min later this guy is walking around talking to his co-workers and not even focusing on my order, he toasted the bread before anything else then added cheese? Cooked everything separately...I'm no chef but this is not how you make a Cuban sandwich. As time passed my food was just sitting there unfinished and he obviously didn't know what he was doing. As the line piled up and customers started to complain about being helped...I walked away slowly and nobody noticed or cared. I literally just left the store about 10 minutes ago. It was my first time in there, I had more than one person tell me that I needed to check it out because their food was amazing, they had a salsa bar, they have amazing Mexican pastries. And when I walked in I was floored. The aroma of fresh tortillas filled my nose. Omg! It was better than even my friends have described. Meat department goes on for days. Prepared foods with rotisserie chicken and fresh ceviche. I was so happy walking around that store. I had already stocked my house with food so I grabbed a pint of salsa from their fresh salsa bar and headed to check-out. This is where the two stars come in. First, there was only one cash register available with one cashier on. No huuuuge biggie, the store was not that busy. But apparently there was some problem with one of the products that the customer ahead of me was purchasing. The cashier was missing. Three cash registers down, there looks to be about two store managers, along with what looked like a district manager. Minimum three managers, and then two other employees. The cashier returned only to talk to the customer and leave again... this happened twice. left more than once... When she returned, a female manager came over and tried to help her with the transaction, explaining to her how it worked. There is now a gentleman behind me. I was only buying a pint of salsa, no one acknowledged us. No one said will be right with you, no one suggested getting another cashier. At this point all three managers came over and four people are instructing this young cashier. One was wearing a vest and tie. None of the five tried to acknowledge us in any way. Maybe an ETA on how long the five of you can figure out how to ring in a transaction?! Then..... This. This is the part that was the icing on the cake. This is where my 4 stars (Yes I would have still given 4 stars. To show how much I am not an A Hole) became TWO. Stars. A cashier now volunteers and opens up the cash register right behind me. And I swear to god, as I turned around she motions to the man behind me, no eye contact to me, to come in to the line. Completely ignoring me, allowing me to sit there and wait while the five people figure out the transaction. I was EQUALLY impressed that the customer, who had not waited as long as I did, KNEW I had been waiting longer than he AND was ahead in line, would not have pointed it out. "This girl who is wearing a bright blue shirt and is not invisible is CLEARLY in front of me. She should go first." Nope. He runs over and I hear them laughing and gossiping. I'm going to point out that I was probably the only Caucasian person in that store. I find it so troubling when I come in to places like this and it is egregious how obvious it is that I am not welcome. Not the first time, but in a place as welcoming in looks and quality of products, I did not expect the OBVIOUS difference in treatment. Too bad. This place is close to my casa and has things that I need... Well most the time. Came here for mussels recently and they didn't have it, but that's besides the point. Anyway the main reason for coming to this place is Im in LOVE with their ceviche. They have a variety of ceviche and they're all pretty good but my favorite ones are the spicy ones of course. Market is pretty big with a flower shop included. Not my first choice in markets but it's convenient and prices aren't too bad so I'll be coming back if I need basic stuff. read more

I frequent this store often but am disappointed that they don't abide by their store hours. I was at the doors at 7:49 for a quick pick up of eggs when they're hours said they closed at 8. There was a gentlemen outside saying they weren't letting anyone in. Store hours should be posted until 7:50 if that's the time they're closing. The stars are for the guy in the Hot food section ( forgot his name ) the big guy with the glasses and is the tallest one there. I wanted to get food and told him I was allergic to meat, he right away went to go wash the things to grab the food and I thought that was awesome customer service. Let's not forget he saved us money as well. The stars are also for Jorge at the meat section, I'm always very indecisive with my options on what I get. So I like to ask for a lot of samples so I know what I'm getting. Like I didn't know what cheese or cream to get and he was just being patient, giving me all the samples and was being nice and I loved that. Those two guys have superb fanatic service ! Don't pay any attention to the bad reviews. I don't understand how people who go on opening day expect everything to be 100% smooth...things happen! Duh! And if you want to add all kinds of ish to your food and they don't allow it, then go elsewhere. Simple. It is what it is. I on the other hand was very satisfied with this location and their customer service. I even got a free sample of meat at the deli from the super nice woman who helped me ;-) The pan dulce, produce, and meats are very good quality and price. They also have a flower shop which is nice considering the proximity to the cemetery. I absolutely LOVE the huge space throughout the market. Other Northgate González markets are small and hard to get around, but this one is AWESOME! I especially like the diversity of people working there. We come here often for the meat trio package that comes with tortillas (sometimes cheese), but today we asked three employees to make sure the sign is correct, "free tortillas with each platter." All three (including cashier) said, "yes." But why did we get charged? No one has time to go back and argue over a job THEY are hired to do. Getting tired of having to bite the bullet because we would need to buy tortillas anyways. But if it's NOT part of the deal, remove the sign and stop having your employees say it is. Review is for the Bakery Only! I came here for their amazing Bolillo Rolls. I had tried to call ahead and make my order since I needed 120, but when I called he just said to come in the day before I needed my order. So that is what I did. I came in on a Friday at around noon, I stood at the counter for 15 minutes before anyone acknowledge me though several people saw me waiting there. Finally a gentlemen who was working in the back asked me what I needed, he nodded his head and said he would get someone. I then waited for another 20 minutes. Side Note: As I waited patiently I watched the man who had made initial contact with me, he went in and out of the bakery on several occasions when returning he would work the dough that was on the counter but never once did he wash his hands. There is a sink right up front for that, and nope not once did he wash his hands or wear any gloves. Finally, a young woman (Wearing gloves, like the majority of the bakers) came to my rescue. Though a bit unorganized she took my order, and apologized several times for the delay. My order for 120 rolls came to the cheap price of $30, I returned to the bakery to give a copy of my receipt and I was on my way. I returned the next morning at 7:45 a.m. and my rolls were hot, fresh, and ready. The smell was amazing, nothing like fresh baked bread. I want to rate the bread itself at FIVE STARS. The customer service though is AWFUL, and I get it there is a bit of a language barrier but I'll muddle my way through that. Also, just watching that one baker in action, and not washing his hands... Well someone needs to talk to him about that. read more

Pan dulce , tamales , and aguas frescas....oh my I was super excited when we found out we would be getting a Northgate nearby . Northgate market has been a great addition to the community and a relief from the eye sore that was buy low market . As soon as you enter you notice the fresh bakery pumping out delicious Pan Dulce's . The prices are usually $.55 each or 3/$1 on the mini breads . They also sell cookies and French breads . If you need a special cake or jellos they have you covered also . The Meat and Produce section is one of the best around . While I'm not big on comparing prices I usually don't come out with a huge bill . The quality and variety is really good and they have an organic section . If you want to fill your stomach they have some hot food items such as chicharron , tamales , pollo asada , fresh seafood items , tacos , Tortas and other Mexican specialties . They also sell Agua Frescas which are sold in house and are really delicious and refreshing . They offer small tastings if you're undecided on a flavor. The only downside would be the tight parking spots but Overall a great market . read more

Now that the opening weekend is over, here are my impressions (as a gringo who lives in Cal Heights): Nice wide aisles and clean. Fast checkout. Okay prices, not really bargain other than the specials. Good takeout section (prepared foods, salsa, ceviches). There is also a salsa bar in the dining area if you buy a tamale or something from the combo area. Service is a little confusing if you aren't used to order here, pay there. The tamales that were self serve were all dried out in the afternoon. The staff is friendly. Most speak English although maybe not 100% comprehension if you ask a complicated question. Have a lot more specialties of different Latin cuisines (eg Peruvian) than Superior. Huge butcher case. Produce is not as high quality or as cheap as Superior, but there is more selection on fresh herbs. They were sampling Hatch green chili tortillas...nice kick! Also they have the raw wheat tortillas that you heat up in a cast iron pan. Never liked wheat tortillas til I did this. Haven't tried the bakery. The sample girl is nice there. As often as not I find myself just shopping here and not continuing on up to Superior. Parking and circulation can be confusing depending on which direction you are coming from. The driveway from Cherry is always congested, so I usually enter from the alley behind the gas station on Del Amo, and park in the first row where you have just single=loaded angle parking. This review is of the bakery. I ordered a white cake with strawberry frosting decorated with lots of bright colored flowers two weeks ago for my sons Coco birthday party tomorrow. I paid for the cake that day and was told to return today after 10am. I arrive at 11am and after a few minutes am told my cake is not ready. I'm pretty upset considering how long ago I ordered it and the fact that I have to drive 20 minutes to get here and back. They said it will be ready in half an hour. I have to get ready for the party tomorrow and advise I'll be back later. On my way home, I get a call from a woman advising that they do not have enough vanilla for my cake (half sheet) and they only have marble now. I am absolutely livid. I placed an order for a custom cake for a reason. So now I have to somehow find a cake for the party that is tomorrow. So much for a custom cake! Oh and to top it off I have to go back to get my money back. I will never come to this location again. **They called back while I was in another store trying to order a cake stating they had the ingredients. I'm trying to still figure out how they didn't have them to begin with, but whatever. I told them I was already ordering a different cake and will still be getting a refund. read more

As soon as you walk towards the entrance the delicious smell of their meat smacks you in the face. Everytime I've been here there has been someone grilling meat outside and apparently if you buy meat here they'll grill it for you for free. Once you make it past the delicious bbq you enter a clean market stocked with essentials. They also have a good array of cooked food you can purchase. Sometimes they even have deals if you buy a certain item you get something free. They only real Complaint is how tight the parking spots are. read more
