Tried the tres leches cake from the bakery section and it's not bad at all. I've had their tamales and those are good (and they're available every day of the year!). You can get chicken/pork/cheese/beef in any quantity you like (6 and 12 packs available for cheaper price). Not sure if this happens all the time but had to wait really long to check out because there's no self-checkout and even though it was crowded, only 2 cashiers were working and everybody seems to be shopping for a week's worth of grocery for a family of 5 whereas I just needed to pay for one tres leches. OMG! The variety of ceviche ! I'm in love!! A hot case of various hot foods, pre blended drinks (DO Refreshing) and chilled case of bakery goods! Produce was beautifully displayed for one to pick their best. So many items in the store were unknown to myself. Would love to learn how to prep them! Associates were super helpful when I wasn't sure where to seek an item seeing as I lack being trilingual-working on that! Greatful for the assistance! Today July 29th at 4:45 pm I was excited to come from El Cajon to this specific Northgate the cakes are Amazing always, except the lady behind the cake counter was rude. I was ready to order when I looked up she was staring at me for like 20 seconds. I'm like hi is there someone to help me and she dead stare at me with an attitude and said yea I can help you . Went to this store to get their carnitas family meal which consisted of a pound of carnitas with your choice of salsa and a dozen tortillas included. The guy behind the counter told me to choose a small tub of salsa which was in the fridge next to the counter. As I was doing that, he had already wrapped up a pound of carnitas and put it in the bag along with the tortillas. When we got home and opened the bag to eat, we discovered that he gave us the worst inedible parts, all the overcooked, burned, hardest bits and pieces that no one wanted. Every piece was rock hard and super dry! Couldn't eat it. If you're not Mexican , make sure you pay close attention when they prepare your food. Ordered 3 pounds of marinaded pollo and 3 pounds of adobada to cook at home for a reunion. While we were cooking it, we found worms in the pork. We ended up tossing the pork, because there were so many worms and we didn't want to get sick. We did cook the chicken, and some people who chanced it said it was good. There's cartilage in the chicken, but after seeing the worms, I could not eat it. I was too scared. I will say, I have eaten here before and I didn't have a problem, but I also didn't inspect my food like my friend did who was cooking the meat. I would never eat here again. read more

Puls a drink all for just over $13. A great deal. Uws, they were street tacos, but it was still a very good portion. So much so that you can split them and make 6 tacos. This place looks and feels so clean and organized, but the pan dulce is disgusting!! I went in there a few days ago and bought pan dulce that tasted rancio! Did they use motor oil or just haven't cleaned out the baking oil? I don't know but even though the pan looked good the same rancio sabor was on all the bread we bought! We live in Coronado so obviously we weren't taking it back so it all got thrown away. We also bought 8 avocados and 5 of them were black inside. They didn't feel soft like we had to hurry up and eat them but they were more hard firm like they still needed to sit out but my husband want to eat guacamole so I opened 1 thinking it would be still firm and green inside but it was firm and black. So we lost several dollars and learned our lesson! I'll stick to La Vallarta where I know their pan dulce is freshly made with fresh products daily and I've yet to get hard black avocados from them, I just pay a bit more for better product. Paying $6.00 for a drink, placing your straw in my drink and having it split down the middle is unacceptable. How much more would it cost to buy a decent straw? Pennies I'm sure. It's a coin toss if you're going to get a friendly greeting or people watching the clock and waiting for their shift to end. But when you get the friendly ones, you could spend an additional 10 minutes just talking life with them which I appreciate. I do think it's a bit pricey and so I find it hard to go there when there's several carniceria near me for the same-ish price. The food is pretty decent. Solid selection. I always find what I need there. Which is a plus. It's always stocked Which is a plus. It's part of the neighborhood and community so you see some people on the trolly or barbershop which is a plus. The champurrado by midday which is usually when I want it... Is typically already gone or looks like it's been sitting there for a long time without being stirred. Anyways would rather have northgate here and have that homey feeling than another chain. read more

This is my regular spot for grocery shopping, but recently I found myself in a situation that forced me to decide never to return here. While I was in line bagging my groceries, a man positioned himself behind the payment machine. After I finished bagging, I asked him to step aside so I could pay, but he only shifted behind me. Keep in mind, these payment aisles are quite cramped. He was standing right behind me as I attempted to enter my PIN. I felt extremely uncomfortable and asked him again to move away, but he merely took a small step to the side, remaining behind me. When I realized I had entered my PIN incorrectly due to having my privacy invaded, I shouted at him , telling him to MOVE THE F*** AWAY, I FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE, I'M TRYING TO PAY. He then moved beside me and started talking to the cashier, making it clear that he works there. This man stood shoulder to shoulder with me, prompting me to cover the PIN pad with my hand. After completing my payment, I approached the security guard to report the incident, and he confirmed that the man indeed worked at the store and he was going to go "handle it". Just because you are an employee, it does not give you the right to invade other's space. Please respect people's boundaries and privacy. This occurred on August 8th, 2025. Other than that, they have a GREAT SELECTION OF FOOD. What a bummer. read more

We did a day trip to San Diego, specifically the Barrio Logan community and came to Northgate for lunch. Since we know about them from their locations in Los Angeles, their take-out or more authentic Mexican offerings are pretty good. We ordered a couple of platters that were ok. The issue why this is 3 stars instead of 4 or 5 is because the lady serving us was busy chit-chatting or paying our order very little attention. Most recent visit was this week during the crazy apocalyptic times... if you want some amazing takeout food and be able to grab the groceries you need without the chaos...well this is the place to come. our to go meal included meat/beans/rice/salsa/tortillas....and added a pound of carnitas...the entire meal was under $40 (and fed a family of 4 with ample leftovers for a second meal). Not only is this crazy affordable but also delicious. I like to go out for taco tuesday and margaritas on occasion, but that's for social purposes. This is for the Food Court Only On February 17th I placed an order for 3 lbs pollo asado, 3 lbs carne asada which came with 4 rice, 4 beans, 1 pkg tortilla and 1 pkg of salsa. I had requested to pick it up at 10:30am the next day. So on February 18th, my co-worker and I went in to pick up our order. This order was for a party at work. This wasn't the first time we had ordered food from here. We received a text from our doctors asking if we could order a bit more food, so upon arrival, we asked if we could add 5 lbs of carnitas to our order, but were told no. If they accommodated us, they would not have any carnitas to serve the rest of their customers for the rest of the day. Fine. But no reason to give us attitude about it. The pollo asado we normally receive is quality chicken breast. This time we received shredded whole chicken that had pieces of bone, skin, and veins in it. It was nasty. How embarrassing to serve such sub par food at a celebration. Our normal service and the quality of food from here is usually GREAT! That is why we have continually purchased food from here. However, after this last experience, no more. The service we received was awful. The woman behind the counter made us feel like we were inconveniencing her, like she had better things to do. read more

With the cost of buying a $10 burrito from a taco shop you could buy the ingredients for a portion of the price and make a few at that. I love perusing the aisles for new finds. We stopped by after visiting the nearby Chicano Park to see what to get and bought a fried whole tilapia fish ($4.99), a whole rotisserie chicken ($8.99) plus papayas, avocados, Roma tomatoes, broccoli, onions, garlic, cilantro....all the regular grocery items which were all good quality and cheaper than what we usually pay for. If I ever come back to this neighborhood, I'll definitely come back...maybe have lunch in too! read more

Great location I prefer over others because of the variety of options available at affordable price. I love their random selection special of vegetables or fruits in bags for $1.29ea. They also sell really delicious peanuts in these plastic containers their super delicious and great quality of peanuts. Covid-19 Finally a grocery store that has groceries! I don't know how lucky/unlucky anyone else has been but my local Vons, Sprouts, and Ralph's are all cleaned out thanks to all those panic shoppers. So you may wait in a "social distancing" line while the guardians of the door wipe down your cart but I promise there will be sustenance once you enter. I bought my usual stash of tortillas along with good ol' cheap Mexican market produce. I was very pleased to see garlic since people in my neck of the woods are probably munching them down like medicinal candy. Unfortunately the toilet paper situation is still a thing here too but at least you'll find bacon and a decent amount of protein staples. read more
