The pink lady was refreshing in this hot day and refills were plentiful. The decor is exactly what you'd expect from the area's oldest (open since 1947) restaurant. We've lived in the area for 2 years and finally stopped in for a burger. Wow, this place is amazing...from the friendly wait staff to the regulars we loved the vibe. Don't be fooled by the outside, this soda shop has one of the best burgers around and is affordable. The inside was vintage, but clean. I have to admit that I had never heard of the Northgate Soda Shop until a few weeks ago. My brother saw an article about it on Google, saying that it was a "hidden gem", and suggested that we try it some time. I will say that if you go by the way the place looks, you just might think twice about eating there. It really is a "hole in the wall" type of place. I would probably not have thought twice about stopping there, just by looking at the place. It's an old place (open since 1947) with a lot of old pictures and memorabilia of many things that you will probably remember from your younger years. It wasn't very busy when we went at 3:45 on a Friday, we were told to sit anywhere we wanted. The waitress was friendly, and asked us what we wanted to drink. I had lemonade (never got a refill)and my brother and his daughter had sweet tea(they got refills).For an appetizer we got the "southern popcorn"(just regular fried okra) and the onion rings. The okra tasted like any frozen breaded okra that you would buy at the store. The onion rings were tasty, fresh and hot they paired well with the ranch dressing to dip them in. The coating on the onion rings tasted like beer batter, and the onion on the inside was cooked and not still raw a BIG plus for me. For my meal I wanted the chicken finger plate, but I was told that they were out of chicken, I decided to get the club sandwich plate. A plate comes with fries and Cole slaw. The sandwich was good with nice size sliced tomatoes, crispy bacon, lettuce and mayo on toasted bread. The Cole slaw had no taste to it and the cabbage was a little wilted. My brother got the pimento cheese burger plate and his daughter ordered the Ruben sandwich plate. They both said that they enjoyed their meal. I only ate half of my sandwich, got a carry out box intending to eat the rest later, and of course I walked out and left it. All and all it was an enjoyable meal, the food was similar to the food at Pete's. There wasn't anything outstanding about my meal to make me just "want" to eat there again,but I did appreciate my brother treating me to dinner and spending time with family is always nice. I would recommend that you give Northgate Soda Shop a try, it's worth at least one visit. read more

I loved this burger joint/soda shop. It's located very close to the downtown area. You can walk or take the trolley. You feel like you stepped back in tIme. I think it opened in 1947, and I bet it probably looks just like it did back then. I had the pimento cheese burger. I think that's the most famous thing on the menu. I'm not usually a fan of burgers. I get annoyed if a burger is too well done or not cooked enough. But this burger was perfect. I'm not a fan of pimento cheese but their pimento cheese was homemade. The tomato was bright red and juicy. The bun was flat like the burger was put in a sandwich machine or maybe pressed on the grill. The coleslaw was good. I felt too guilty to have a milkshake. They looked so good! The night I was there, they were having a music bingo night. So much fun! read more

We took a friend who was visiting from California on his way to Spring training camp in Florida. Our description was "it's a local watering hole where everybody knows your name!" He thoroughly enjoyed the ambience--friends stopping by the tables to say hello, former students speaking from across the room, a warm greeting from Ren, the owner. He loved the chili dog and then, he was introduced to FRIED PIES!! I think I can safely say he enjoyed it since he devoured EVERY BITE! Checked into this hotspot while in Greenville for a wedding. Admittedly, we weren't in our most chipper moods after a few cocktails the prior night... so... we were looking for something local to help us over the hangover. We found Northgate. As we sat down, we were greeted with a bottle of ketchup and two very large sodas (crushed ice for sure). We ordered 2 dogs, onion rings, fries & slaw sides. Each part of the meal was great, the chili on the dogs was spot on, mild & very meaty! Overall, the food & service was fantastic. The restaurant also had a had unique local character that added to the ambiance. However, holding a star back because everything was served in styrofoam...drinks, dogs, plates. Recommend that they switch over to something more environmentally friendly. read more

Back again after a couple of years and hit on a Tuesday, but not just ANY Tuesday. It's the 1st Tuesday of the month, and Parker High Alumni lunch day. Packed house even at 11:45, with most of the folks already lingering over styrofoam cups. While our greeting at the counter rather bluntly was that we wouldn't find any table seats, fortunately our server Allie (who likely hoped for someone ordering something) scooped us up and ushered us to the last table open in the second room. Got our drink orders promptly and left paper menus, getting back shortly to take our order. My colleagues both had salads, generous helpings on styrofoam plates- the Large Chef (9$) and Large Philly Bleu ($9, and like a Philly Classic w/ no bread)- some dressings are house made, most aren't, just ask. They finished them all, no argument there. I went more traditional soda shop with the Cheeseburger Deluxe ($8.25, add $1.25 for half fries/ half rings), and unfortunately, it really wasn't much above average. A standard patty done on a griddle with a plain bun, though the condiments ordered were the ones received. But, how much is there to complain about when you are serenaded at 12:40 by a recorded version of the Parker High Alma Mater with the whole restaurant singing along? Or, all during lunch you can gaze at one of the most eclectic selections of beer and wild animal wall art anywhere? Or honor the lost customers commemorative nameplates? Certainly worth a trip, but if you are wearing a mask, be aware you're likely the only one doing that in the place. read more

So this is an old fashion burgers and fries type shop that's been around since 1947 so they must be doing something right. I got the Chris Evans burger which is a bacon cheeseburger with a fried egg on top. It comes with mayo, tomato and lettuce unless u choose it not to. The burger was ok, a little dry and a bit basic. Nothing special but the fried egg was my favorite part and a great addition. My fries were hot and crispy. You can get cole slaw instead of fries. It was fairly cheap, $7.75 not including tip or tax. read more

Always love stopping here. Food is simple and priced right. Decor takes you back to the past of Greenville and local areas with knick knacks from old sailing ships to a Poinsett Hotel sign. Burgers and fries are the staples along with the Orangeade and the usual soda shop syrups. Just feels comfortable. Our two favorites like many have mentioned here are the pimento burger and the Chris Evans burger(fried egg and bacon topped burger). This place is another one of Greenville's hidden gems. If you're looking for a classic burger joint with a theme this is it. Though not sure WHAT their theme is (60's? 70's? 80's? Items from all older decades used as decor). The service and food however speaks for itself. If you want some old school throwback and great burgers then stop in here sometime! Burger with egg: 5/5 Stars Excellent combination of flavor and the bacon is spot on. This is my most recommended choice if you have never been here before for a burger. Fries: 3/5 Hot and fresh but not fresh enough to be cut there and lacking seasoning (or at the very least salt) Cole Slaw: 2/5 Kudos to them for making it in house but the aftertaste I'm getting tells me it wasn't washed properly before mixing. Don't miss this treasure. The store itself with all its artifacts from the past is a museum of burger history. They serve breakfast too, mostly just biscuits with various items on them. We came in the morning after missing the evening burger call the night before. Tom the cook and brother of the owner cooked me up a burger for breakfast. I had the Chris Evans Burger ($4.15) with bacon and fried egg. The bun was grilled inside and out. Tom threw on some grilled onions and American cheese. This place is a hole in the wall, but all the locals eat here because if you want a well designed burger or sandwich, a perfectly delicious breakfast, or a fresh squeezed orangeade it can't be beaten. I usually (read always) order a bacon, egg, and Swiss with lettuce, tomato, and mayo on wheat toast for breakfast. It's without a doubt the best breakfast sandwich I've had. For lunch, you can't go wrong with any of their sandwiches paired with an orangeade. This place is super cool- it's instantly like a trip back in time. The only thing in the place within the last 3 years is the credit card machine (I was surprised they had one!). They go out of their way to make sure everything is fresh and you are happy. Totally a must-visit if you are in town. This is a divey hole in the wall mom and pop diner. The decor is nostalgic coke and pepsi memorabilia and reminds you of an old timey general store. We tried to fried pickles, buffalo wings, pimento cheeseburger, bacon egg cheese burger and chocolate peanutbutter malt. Everything was served as expected. The burgers are big enough to share and messy. The buns are toasted. I didnt like the thick cut tomatoe...but to each their own. I wouldn't frequent this place often because I just dont eat this kind of food all the time. It made Greenvilles top 10 hamburger joints so I had to give it a go. And it does make my list...the patty isn't too thick and its not a greasy mess. Definately worth frequenting! And the waitress was nice.
