Northside Grill is a great place to go in Ann Arbor if you want a filling breakfast in a welcoming, Americana environment. On a recent cold Sunday morning, I stopped in for breakfast with a friend. Upon putting our name in we were told that there was a wait, but that coffee was available for free on their adjacent patio, along with some heaters. We headed over and enjoyed staying toasty warm until our buzzer went off a short time later. Upon being seated, our server also took our drink order, and promptly delivered it to our table. We perused the menu, and despite the similarities among the different breakfast dishes, I don't know that I've ever had so much trouble making up my mind for a brunch dish! It was a game-time decision, and I elected to place my order second (so my friend could order first), and finally decided on a Farmer's Omelet. Our food arrived a short time later and was worth the short wait. Crispy hash browns formed the base with a delicious and fluffy scrambled egg, covered in fresh chopped vegetables, and a side of a flaky buttermilk biscuit. It's OK but for my $36 two-sandwich, one-fries, 2-drink carryout, phenomenal would have been appreciated. The fries were totally underwhelming frozen krinkle cuts, completely salt free and slightly overfried but the Rueben was actually tasty. Toasted rye was buttery and deliciously crunchy and left me wishing for a napkin. Literally, none provided. The BLT was also good, but should have been called a Blackened BLT for reasons that are probably obvious! There was a pickle and itsy bitsy teeny weeny container of coleslaw on the side. No fork to eat the slaw so can't rate it, but pickle had some crispy dill punch. No catsup, cutlery, napkins or salt and pepper in the bag. But since we were waiting for a delayed train at the nearby Amtrak depot and Northside was quick and convenient and a popular local spot we hadn't tried so we took a chance. read more

I had a lovely experience at the NorthSide Diner while in Ann Arbor. They have a big menu with a ton of specialty drinks. They welcomed me in from the cold with a caramel apple cider. I couldn't leave without trying a pumpkin pancake so I ended up ordering one with the crab cake sandwich. I recommend getting no cheese on the sandwich. The food was yummy and freshly prepared. What a great breakfast spot in the Northside. First off the coffee was right on point. It was hot and fill of flavor. Our server, Zack, was amazing. The coffee or water never went empty and he must of asked 3 or 4 times "is everything OK or do you need anything else". Great job! The food came out fast and it was hot and tasted great. I will defiantly make this a regular stop when I come back to Ann Arbor. Oh yea, the favor of this little gem takes you back to the late 50's early 60's. It was clean and very organized. Okay, I went into this place with some higher expectations based on all the great reviews. Well, it didn't take long for my hopes to be dashed into the ground. First of all, the menu DID indeed look promising. lots of options and some tasty sounding stuff right? Wrong! My boyfriend and I ordered the buttermilk pancakes and I think something happened between the kitchen and the glue factory because these pancakes came out looking like huge dry pieces of cardboard. They were tasteless and chewy and our dull butter knife couldn't even get through the pancakes! When I order buttermilk pancakes I expect soft warm happiness in every bite. You know what we got instead? Dry sadness that we couldn't even efficiently cover up with syrup due to the fact that the pancakes were almost bigger than the damn plate! I'm all for big portions, and almost in any other circumstance I would be glad for a big plate of pancakes. We took like 5 bites of our pancakes and decided that even if we were starving we would not finish these dry desert bland pancakes that maybe the secret ingredient was Elmer's glue. And for 2 drinks, pancakes and side of eggs and what looked like freezer to microwave sausages it was $30! We could have went to McDonald's and spent half that price for actual edible food. The staff was nice, and they did indeed follow covid policies, but we sadly will not be back for this overpriced bland food! No thank you! read more

So I couldn't help myself... It was Sunday morning and one of my last weekends on campus before I moved out. This was my opportunity to try Northside Grill before I left AA (my friend swears by their pancakes). The mood was fitting for a late morning brunch and it was drizzling outside, the type of weather that leaves Ann Arbor in a foggy mist. I wanted BREAKFAST. In particular I wanted 6 things: coffee, orange juice, an over-easy egg, hash browns, corned beef hash and toast. I came picky... and left very happy because I got a combination of everything I wanted for a great price ($13 total). A small glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, several cups of coffee (free refills), a one-egg breakfast that came with a side of hash browns and either toast or an English muffin (~$5). I also got a side of corned beef hash ($3.45) to top it all off. This combination was the bomb and I'll probably get it again the next time I come here, even though they have so many other things on the menu that people rave about (bran pancakes, omelettes, skillets and sandwiches). Their portions are pretty generous. And their hash browns and brown and crispy as opposed to soggy and oily. For the breakfast eaters who just like to eat a little of everything, I'd recommend getting their one-egg breakfast (decently priced at ~$5) and then just order additional sides to your liking, ie. pancakes, turkey bacon... The service was quick and friendly. They close at 3pm and people kept streaming in right around then, hoping to fill their stomachs but had to be turned away. So make sure to get there before they close... this place gets busy on the weekends! read more

Was driving around Ann Arbor yesterday running errands on Plymouth road when my cuz said he wanted to grab breakfast. I immediately thought of Northside Grill, but checked google for Ann Arbor's best breakfasts. Near the top of the list was Northside Grill, so we decided to stop in for a hearty meal. A quaint and comfortable setting with a very friendly staff made us quickly appreciate this Ann Arbor institution. We were seated within 2-3 min of walking through the door and our orders were quickly taken. I ordered the "Hash Basher" an open faced sandwich with corned beef hash, egg, cheese, bacon and red onion. Also came with crispy and delicious hash browns and a biscuit. This was by far one of the best breakfasts I've had in years. The salty and savory flavors combined to make my tastebuds dance in harmony!!! I ordered a side of sausage gravy and put it on top... mind blowing!!! I really can't say enough about Northside Grill, breakfast comfort food at its best!!! read more

Sometimes when the line waiting for seating at Angelo's is too long, or we are too hungry to be that patient, then Northside Grill becomes our backup choice. (And I know that makes Northside Grill sound like the someone's poor sister, but we like Angelo's breads a lot, and the French Toast and the Deep Fried French Toast made from it can't be beat, so Angelo's will always be our first choice.) The food is classic diner food, and generally we have been pretty content with our orders. All of the classics like pancakes and omelets and french toast have been fine. Servings are ample and prices are decent. I tend to order the Nitro Skillet because it offers the most heat of anything on the menu; but even that is comparatively mild (the word "nitro" should imply that there may be a threat of pain). I suppose if there is anything that makes going to the Northside Grill an occasional sour experience is the possibility that whatever server we get will treating that day's customers to her dour and unpleasant mood. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it shows up it just sucks the air out of the room. read more

Very crowded!! Granted, we came at a busy time on a Saturday and had to wait an hour. Luckily, there's a nice thrift store next door to make your wait a little better. As far as the service and food, we were pretty satisfied. Wait was a little long to get our food, but that's probably because it was so full. I got the corned beef hash which wasn't very good, but everyone else was really satisfied with their choice. One thing I didn't like was the menu. It was way too long and we all had a hard time choosing. Prices are kinda high but not terrible. Overall, I'd come back and try something else. They have a very nice patio that I assume would be open in warmer weather, but unfortunately it was closed for the year when we came. Very cool, trendy place that's worth the stop. read more

Northsider Specialty Breakfast Sandwich Grilled deli ham topped with a fried egg, bacon, mayo, lettuce, and tomato on a grilled onion roll (I requested that my order come without American cheese). It comes with a side of hash browns. The bacon was crispy, the egg was perfectly fried so that some of the yolk still oozes out, and the onion roll is soft and onion-y. My ideal breakfast combo of choice that really filled me up. Buttermilk Pancakes with Biscuit My bf got the short stack of buttermilk pancakes that were huge; he couldn't finish them and said he would've opted for the single pancake had he known how big it was going to be. The biscuit was not edible. It was hard and dry. The pancakes were classic buttermilk pancakes, so great job on those. Nut and Honey Coffee Drink A little too sweet and lukewarm for my taste. Wait staff: Waiter recommended the dish I ate which was great. We got our drinks right away. My friend ordered their house orange juice which is freshly squeezed. Pricey, but refreshing. It was room temperature though which made it taste a bit odd. Just had water on the side which was refilled a lot, hydration is important. Overall great experience. Small diner with a big crowd. Cute little diner with a community atmosphere. It's the type of place where you assume it's full of Ann Arbor townies who frequent the restaurant every weekend. For a diner, it's really great food-wise. They offer a lot of options. Last time, I got a hash with green peppers, mushrooms, cheese, and eggs, I believe. It came with a side of toast (which I do NOT take for granted because I love a good carb with a side of carbs). It was pretty much exactly what you'd expect from a diner (aka a little greasy), but it was good! Another big thing for me at breakfast places is coffee, and Northside Grill has great coffee. An excellent option for breakfast food in Ann Arbor. It's usually pretty busy on weekends so be prepared to wait a little bit before being seated. One perk for waiting is the complimentary coffee outside the restaurant for customers, which satisfied my caffeine needs for the morning. The customer service was fantastic and friendly. Before we were even seated the waitress was already pouring water for us and offered us recommendations. I ordered the breakfast burrito, which was very filling. The burrito was soft and covered in melted cheddar cheese and tomatoes. The inside of the burrito contained a lot of diced green peppers, onions, chorizo, and scrambled eggs. I thought the peppers and onions were still pretty raw and could be cooked longer. The meal also includes several tortilla chips, which is nice to scoop up the remainder of the contents of the burrito. As a lover of sour cream, they were very generous with the amount given for my meal, which can be hard to come by at other restaurants. Are you a fan of Elvis? Then I would recommend eating breakfast there on Elvis Sundays. It's really a 3.5 star- homey old time atmosphere, it's a classic American fare breakfast brunch place that has prospered as long as I can remember. This visit, I judged it solely based on taste, having my usual, and the most basic offering: 2 eggs, 4 sausage links, hash browns and rye toast. My companion had the Big Easy- a hash brown scramble with two sunny side eggs over top which I also had the pleasure of tasting. Sausage links and eggs paired nicely with the thick cut rye toast whose butter proportion didn't drown out the toast or make the plate overwhemingly oily. Hash browns were a bit mushy, oily and not the best on the crunch. Two types of hot sauce were a nice touch though. The Big Easy however was well done, it was very flavorful with its spicy sausage and medley of vegetables topped with lots of cheese. The over medium eggs ran down the sides of the hash making for a tasty bite. The quality of the hash browns were kept well disguised in this dish. Overall, a must try place for the experience, serving up local Ann Arbor offerings, such as lobster butter love coffee but a bit overpriced for the quality of food. I really liked it here. I had the huevos rancheros and thought it was very tasty. Something about the beans, cheese blend and ranchero sauce just made eggs all the happier. My husband got the farmer's omelette topped with sausage gravy and was very pleased indeed. I thought it was good but I liked mine better. He liked his fresh squeezed OJ alot, I sucked it up and settled for tea (I miss OJ). We split (split as in I got three bites) some short stack apple oat bran pancakes as a dessert kinda deal with real maple syrup and both really liked them, nice bits of fruit and cinnamon. James hogged them but I was really full anyway. Service was nice. Friendly, fast and she came back to check on us which I appreciate. We will be back as I want some potato pancakes at some point.
