The caviar, served with Pringles potato chips and tangy egg salad, was an exquisite introduction to the tasting menu. The house-made sourdough focaccia with homemade butter may have been the best bread we've eaten. The dayboat scallop was pan-seared and paired with ginger whey-poached pork belly, Anson Mills Carolina Gold lobster congee, and a sake-soy veil. It was incredible. The peas and carrots course of Thumbelina carrots, sweet peas, whipped coconut, and carrot-mint consommé was unlike anything we've experienced before. It was inspired. The fluke was sorrel brioche-crusted and accompanied by razor clam escabeche, sauce romesco, and sea beans, was magnificent. The chef spoke about harvesting the local sea beans himself, and the razor clam purveyor happened to be dining alongside us. It was a memorable and distinctly Cape Cod moment. The intermezzo was a cranberry membrane filled with a refreshing burst of vodka, and delightfully cleansed the palate. The optional foie gras bonbon, encased in milk chocolate, was another triumph. We agreed we would have missed out had we passed on it. It was one of the finest foie gras bites we've ever enjoyed. The tri-tip sirloin course featured American Wagyu with sweet onion soubise and toasted ramp-and-vinegar gnocchi. "Amazing" hardly begins to describe it. The Humboldt Fog cheese course was dramatically torched tableside and served with blueberry shallot jam, toasted milk bread, and smoked almonds. Sublime, artistic, and utterly delicious. The included dessert course featured caramelized white chocolate, lychee, pink guava sorbet, macadamia toffee, white chocolate gel, and olive oil sponge. It was unbelievably good. An optional dessert accompaniment, ordered by every diner, was a layered chocolate, shortbread, and banana tart topped with caviar was a playful and fitting finale. The charming atmosphere, attentive staff, and excellent music had diners on their feet dancing between courses. We finished with their homemade Mignardises and were given a lovely packet to take home which included a homemade scone. This restaurant is wildly civilized. Many courses were served on beautiful handcrafted pieces from Scargo Pottery in Dennis collaboratively designed by the chef and the talented Scargo artist Tina Holl. I offer only praise and gratitude for the extraordinary food, welcoming atmosphere, talented and artistic staff, and a dining experience that reminds us how exceptional Cape Cod dining can be. The decor is a little bananas (different shades of green between the walls, the napkins, the barstools, and the banquettes; five kinds of lighting fixtures; lots of sound and lighting items with exposed, hasty-looking wiring). The bathroom door doesn't really close and lock properly. And the restaurant is really loud, even half full. The writing on the menu, about family members and special recipes, tells me that there's pride here and real care about making a good restaurant. However, without the attention to detail (particularly cleanliness and hygiene!), that's kind of moot. Three stars instead of two here because the pizza was good and the staff obviously care about customers.

**Extremely Disappointing Birthday Experience**…read more I have been to emBargo before and have generally enjoyed my experiences here, which is why I chose this restaurant to celebrate my birthday weekend. Unfortunately, this visit was a complete disappointment, especially considering our bill was approximately $225. One of the biggest issues was the lack of attentiveness from our waiter. At one point, I needed a fork to eat my meal. One of my guests was heading to the restroom and specifically told our waiter that I needed a fork. I waited approximately five minutes, giving him more than enough time to bring one over. Instead, he continued having a conversation with another employee while I sat at the table unable to properly eat my meal. Eventually, I had to get up from my own birthday dinner and find a fork myself. Only after I got up did someone attempt to assist me with the utensil. Then, at approximately 9:35 PM, our waiter brought the bill to the table even though no one had asked for the check. I found this especially off-putting because this was clearly a birthday celebration, and we had not indicated that we were finished. We weren't even given the opportunity to order dessert or continue celebrating. The waiter had also mentioned that his shift didn't end until around 11 PM, making me even more confused as to why we were essentially being rushed out more than an hour beforehand. When I paid the approximately $225 bill, I left a $15 tip and wrote a note explaining why. I normally tip more than 20%, particularly when I receive good service, but I did not believe the service that evening justified that amount. What happened afterward was what truly ruined the experience. After seeing the tip and my note, the waiter came back to our table and confronted us about it. He raised his voice and argued that we should not have given him the tip we gave him because he believed he had provided good service. When I attempted to explain the problems we experienced, he put his hand up toward me, said that he didn't want to hear it, and walked away. That was completely inappropriate and unprofessional. A customer should never be confronted or yelled at because an employee disagrees with the amount of a discretionary tip especially after the customer has already explained the service issues. I understand that this waiter was relatively new and had only been working at the restaurant for approximately six weeks. I can absolutely give someone grace for being new. What I cannot excuse is confronting a customer over a tip, refusing to listen to their concerns, and walking away dismissively. What makes this particularly disappointing is that I was a returning customer. I have recommended emBargo to friends, colleagues in banking, investors, and other people in my professional network because of my previous experiences here. Unfortunately, after the way my birthday celebration was handled, I can no longer comfortably recommend this restaurant. I specifically chose emBargo for a special occasion. Instead of leaving with a great birthday memory, I left feeling rushed, disrespected, and extremely disappointed. Based on this experience, I would not recommend emBargo for birthdays or other special celebrations unless management addresses how situations like this are handled.

I went to "Not Your Average Joe's" in Hyannis (at Cape Cod Mall) because someone gave me a "gift certificate", for my birthday, and I have had mostly good experiences at "Not Your Average Joe's" in the past. I ordered the "fish sandwich" ($14) with substituting "sweet potato fries", instead of the standard "french fries". The table was clean, the manager who seated us, forgot to give us the "specials menu insert". The beer was cold, & the bread with the olive oil (for dipping) was good. My family member ordered the "steak tips" ($14) medium rare. When the food came to the table, my "fish sandwich" was served with "sweet potato mash" (which was more like a "puree", or "split pea soup"). I immediately said (to the waiter) that I had asked for "sweet potato fries", but unfortunately, instead of saying, "sorry my mistake, I'll be right back with your "sweet potato fries", the waiter insisted that I had asked for the "sweet potato mash"... This created more drama, than was appropriate, for the situation, but I was fine as long as I get my "sweet potato fries" (or even the standard "french fries"). It was birthday & wanted to enjoy it... But unfortunately, my family member was "embarrassed". I took the "fish sandwich" off of the plate (& the tartar sauce) and moved it to my bread plate, and the waiter took the plate (with the "sweet potato mash" & coleslaw) back to the kitchen. I then noticed that my roll/bun was "wet & soggy" from being placed on top of the wet/soupy "sweet potato mash". I removed the fish, from the "wet & soggy" roll/bun, because I was going to ask for a new "roll/bun", but unfortunately, now this was too much stress for my "family member", do deal with, she was too "embarrassed", and just wanted to leave... We paid the bill in full left & in a hurry (without eating anything) without using my "gift certificate", all because my family member was too "embarrassed" (this is her own issue). The fish looked good, but I never got to try it. The lettuce on the "fish sandwich" was old, limp & wimpy (what I call "rabbit food") like you get sometimes on a sandwich, at "McDonald's". The "steak tips" were over cooked, but not well done. Service was slow. Taking into consideration, everything that happened, it was a negative experience. Service is a big part of dining experience. FYI: Cooking 101: "Never put wet veggies" on a plate of "fried food", & "Never put wet veggies" on a plate with a "sandwich", always put the "veggies" on a separate plate! In the end, we left very hungry, and we went "down the street" to "Chick-fil-A", and we both had chicken sandwiches (5 stars) (the rolls/buns were not "soggy") to celebrate my birthday. read more

My husband Jim and I visited the restaurant in Hyannis, Ma on Friday, November 26th. Myself, having an allergy to seeds, had to ask the bartender Orianna, if there were seeds in an item I wanted. She was so nice and said let me check for you. She checked and advised me that yes it did have seeds and I shouldn't order that item. The next thing I wanted she checked and came back to me and said someone would be over to talk to me. Within a couple minutes another young lady came up to me from the kitchen, Mariah, and spoke with me about all the items that she couldn't recommend to me because they used a mustard seed in a lot of their items. She was very knowledgeable about the food and I asked if I could order chicken fingers off the kids menu and she said yes I could and I would be safe with that. My point here is. I have never been in a restaurant ever that was so caring about my food allergy and willing to go the extra mile to help me. Orianna and Mariah, if they worked for me in my establishment, and I got this review, you can bet I would be doing something special for them. Hint hint. this is one of my favorite restaurants to stop for dinner while in hyannis. love the food. great selection of unique beers. affordable. excellent specials. my only complaints are that the two times i added steak tips to my salad, they were very overcooked and dry(i ordered them medium rare). also, sometimes the service can be very slow, especially when it is busy or you are a large group. but it is not bothersome enough to keep me from returning. love the bread and oil!!!! read more

When we were seated they did not provide any silverware, straws, plates or napkins. My sister had a fly land on her food and lost her appetite immediately. It was pretty, but not exceptional. My wife had the onon soup. For main courses we had the beet and arugula salads, (the arugula with shrimp), the flounder and the crispy salads. The main reason I cam giving the restaurant 5* was the scallops. These were far from the typical fried scallops. They had a like panko coating, served with succotash, and were quite good, even by Cape Cod standards for scallops. The salads are both also very good. Service was attentive and not intrusive. It is a nice old house and has nice ambiance.

The buretta salad featured a single slice of tomato and some prosciutto. Was advertised with roasted peppers that were no where to be found. Only one person had the beet salad and featured the same weird green dressing. Two of our party have seafood allergies. We couldn't get answer from the waiter on cross contamination so literally gave multiple entree options for them to work with and the entree selection ended up a surprise. Ordered a variety of entrees. Chicken parm was not eaten, a pizza had one slice consumed, a special salad concoction for a seafood allergy was not enjoyed, I had a pasta with sausage and broccoli rabe, which didn't kill me but I would never recommend it or attempt to consume again, and then two people had the Bolognese, which they said they enjoyed. Incidentally the waiter kept telling every diner about homemade pasta. There is no way the ziti or penne that was served in lieu of the linguine ordered was homemade. The menu is huge. That's always a red flag to me. Do fewer things really well and not 50 poor to mediocre things. It was very busy when we arrived at 630, but nearly empty before 8. The service was terrible end to end. The food was 80% terrible. It pains me to say it, but any chain Italian restaurant is better. We would not ever return...
