If you are in Estes Park in the am Notchtop is the place to eat! I suggest sitting on the patio as it has a great view of the mountains above the parking lot. Bring a jacket or blanket depending on the time of the year but even if it is brisk it will be worth it. The space is cozy just like the mountains. The staff here try to make it happen. At other places a group can be daunting but here they try to make your group happen. It is busy but people are constantly getting up and coming in. Alex was our server and he made sure we were well taken care of. He suggested items, checked in often, made sure things came out in a timely fashion and even showed us photos. The food is so yummy. Lunch swing and a miss. We had high hopes for Notchtop - the concept is great and LOVE that there are vegetarian and vegan options (not just one item) - for that it gets 2 stars. Otherwise, we were mightily disappointed. Saturday, late June ~1pm - we were seated quickly enough. Took a while for the server to take our order (~10 minutes before she came for our drink order) and it took well over 45 minutes for our food to come out! They weren't particularly busy (lots of open tables) and there were a lot of servers. Maybe short staffed in the kitchen? Probably more disappointing than waiting so long was the food itself. Potato soup was "fine" but nothing special and way too much bacon. Three of us got side salads and every single one of us had warm lettuce. Not even room temperature - warm, like it had been sitting under a heat lamp. The turkey panini had way more mayo that should be allowed on a sandwich and the bread was barely toasted. We waited so long for our food we couldn't risk sending it back. As it was, we were there for so long we had to change our afternoon plans to go to RMNP because we rain out of time. This was a great find where the locals go. We were visiting from Denver so not local. The food was good and plentiful. The service was wonderful and attentive. The ambiance was ok. It was cramped and dark inside. We sat in the smaller dining room and the bathrooms are split with the men's on one Side of the building and the women's all the way on the other. Weird. I've been coming to Notchtop for over 20 years and there is a reason for the line out the door! The food is always delicious and the ambiance is cozy with booths. They have a baked goods case with all the yummies from pie to cookies- they even offer many gluten free options! We were super impressed by Notchtop. We had lunch one day and then breakfast the next. The food is legit good (in my opinion, it's hard to find actually good food in smaller towns in CO). I had a burger for lunch and the next morning for breakfast, I had the Santa Fe hash -- both well seasoned and fresh and spicy. Even the drip coffee is good. The service is fast and efficient and you can tell the staff take it seriously, running a great restaurant. I ordered the country fried steak, which comes with eggs, a choice of a potato type (I got hashbrowns) and a choice of bread (I got an English muffin). This place offeres gluten-free toast, waffle, and pancakes. There milk alternatives are almond, oat, and soy. I ordered the gluten-free pancake platter; which was 1 giant pancake, 2 eggs, and 3 slices of turkey bacon (I asked for turkey). I got a side of gluten-free toast also. It was all very good. I tried the pancake without the syrup it was delicious. I got the real maple syrup; which was $2.49 upcharge (not the $1.49 online menu said) and it ruined my pancake. Also when the bill came the side of gluten free toast was $5.29 with the $1 upcharge for GF. Other than that everything I had was awesome. My hubby got the sausage and gravy platter and also loved his. He got the home fried potatoes with his. He really liked his meal, he felt there could of been more sausage in the gravy but he really liked the biscuits and potatoes. We also got lattes with alternative milk which were also good. Everything else on the plate was delicious so I simply pushed the tofu to the side after trying a few bites of it. As a vegan who eats tofu quite often, there's so much you can do to season it and make it taste good, so I hope Notchtop will improve that specific dish. To begin I'll start by answer your burning question- yes, Notchtop IS a top-notch eatery! Open for breakfast and brunch- we arrived today about 12:00. Although super busy at a peak time on Sunday, we as a party of two were seated almost immediately. In no time our attentive waiter, Luiz, approached for our drink order. The menu was easy to follow and digest even though there are so numerous options! Trust me every member of your family will find something for breakfast or lunch that tickles their fancy. In the end, I opted for the Veggie Scramble with a side of fruit and multigrain toast. Hubby ordered the Polish Breakfast with the sour cream on the side. The Veggie Scramble is similar to an omelet and everything was fresh and tasty. It included two large slices of multigrain toast. Other toast options were sourdough or English muffin. The side of fruit included slices of apple, banana, strawberry and orange. Refreshing and fresh! The Polish Breakfast also included generous portions of eggs, sausage and hash brown patty. I think the sour cream was for that. He chose the English muffin. There was so much sausage, he gave me two of them. Everything was delicious! The staff were friendly and Luiz took great care of us. The food did take a little bit but no longer than was reasonable as busy as they were. We sat close to the door and I could see tables were turned quickly so the wait wasn't bad for anyone that came in. I have a feeling we will be visiting again during our stay this week. There are more things on the menu I'm eager to try. It's a bakery too but we didn't try any of those items. Their coffee cocktails sound delicious as well. We were very excited to try this place based on the reviews. Unfortunately, it didn't rate as high in our list as it did for others. Staff was nice. We sat at the bar, which was nice and quick. We ordered the egg white omelette. It was not good at all. It was not cooked well and the feta seemed old.
