This review is purely based on the service. I had placed an order to-go which gave me an estimated pickup ETA of 30 mins after I placed the order (accounting for the rush hour at lunch). When I arrived to pick up my order at the provided ETA, one of their staff nonchalantly told me "We are busy, it will take 10-15 minutes more." Fast forward to 45 minutes later, another lady from the staff tells me " We will start preparing your order now, would you like me to cancel it that case?" Decided to give Nozomi another chance -- this time my son and I went to the restaurant instead of ordering DoorDash. That made ALL the difference in the world. Showed up at the host stand and we were promptly seated. There was a baseball game on the big screen. Ordered lots of food: sushi rolls, squid legs, edamame, salmon kama, fresh maguro sushi (they kicked in an extra piece of sashimi no charge). Everything was very good -- much better than my previous experience. The server (owner?) was very friendly and took good care of us. My opinion of Nozomi has changed for the better. Micro greens on the rolls and under the Shumai actually added to the dishes and didn't t feel like random ass garnishes every featured Kitchen Nightmares kitchen loves to throw in there. They always fugg up the vibe of the roll but Nekosan did this perf.. Idk just like even though every roll we got had tempura it was so mfing good.... My friend and I were craving sushi and found Nozomi. I got the girl's night roll and enjoyed it. I really appreciated the photos on the menu because I tend to get indecisive when ordering sushi rolls. I wasn't sure how to feel about the mustard sauce but it was tasty. I got an ajitama on the side for extra protein and it was ok. I wish it was more marinated. Overall I also enjoyed the vibes and throwback music. We really enjoyed our meal here last week while exploring La Jolla. We were looking for some good sushi but somewhere not crazy expensive on the water and somewhere where we could be in and out fairly quickly bc we had plans with friends in downtown. Service was crazy friendly and very good and attentive. We waited for about 10-15 minutes for a table to clear and then were able to quickly order and were brought free miso soup. We ordered a seaweed salad which came out very quickly in a metal/chilled martini glass and was a great portion and tasted great. We went with a few rolls and some sashimi yellowtail with jalapeño and 5 pieces for $19. We also chose the Pinkyu roll and the Pink Panda (no rice) and I loved them both. My fav was by far the Pink Panda. Sooo delicious! Fresh and great green tea as well. Would easily come here again for dinner. Great first impression. There are a number of Japanese restaurants to choose from in the San Diego / UTC area, and Nozomi is what you are looking for when you want helpful staff, reasonable portions for the price, and excellent tasting Japanese fusion food. We only recently visited Nozomi for the first time, but we will not hesitate to return next time in the area! The staff immediately helped us to our table and helped us order our meal. We happened to arrive during Happy Hour, so our beverages (beer and sake) were discounted, which was a nice surprise. Regarding food, everything we had was excellent. The shishito peppers were seasoned nicely with a good balance of bonito flakes. The chicken curry portion was multiple meals worth - we didn't know this in advance, so ended up ordering far too much food (all to common when visiting a restaurant for the first time!). However, our server helped us package this up nicely after the meal and it was just as good reheated! We also had some very nice sushi rolls. The LaJolla Roll contained no rice, only fish, and melted in our mouths. The quality of the surimi was excellent and the scallops and other fish were extremely fresh! This roll is highly recommended. I've had no rice rolls at other sushi locations in UTC, and this was the best. We also enjoyed the Super Crunch Roll which was also very nice. We really enjoyed our meal here and tried a variety of items from the menu. 7:15 pm Sunday pm Arrived and put in my name for party of 3. Busy with 6 parties ahead of me. Only 1 waiter for all tables today. Not sure if they have more staff normally but the struggle! Props to the hostess/cashier; server; busser as they were all reasonable cheerful despite the stress expediting. Things got crazy as the POS system got backed up and almost every table ended up finishing and waiting in line to pay. As the hostess was stuck at the register, that left one gentleman to address walk ins, take orders, serve, take customer requests, etc. They weren't able to seat us and it was almost a full house clear before 9 new parties were seated. We'd been second in line out of this group so some experienced a very different and more efficient feeling seating if they came later than us. 8:30 pm we received our first dish- oyako Don very good 8:37 pm received Love Volcano delicious with crispy edges on rice I definitely wasn't sure based on my initial observations and we considered leaving. Nozomi! What happened? This used to be one of my favorite places around 2015-2016. I ordered the chicken katsu curry yesterday, to go. The chicken katsu was overcooked/overfried. And the curry was super watery. I attempted to cook off some of the excess water at home, but I couldn't get it to thicken at all. The takoyaki was really good though. Nozomi is in a tucked away location within UTC, but they have done well for over 20 years by serving the neighboring office buildings and apartments and the nearby Marriott Hotel. I used to come here occasionally for lunch when I was working for a different employer. The restaurant offers free validated parking for two hours so remember to bring your ticket to be stamped. Most of the dine-in seating had been outside under a covered patio even before the pandemic so they did not have to make adjustments like erecting a parklet. The menu had the standard offerings for a sushi restaurant with the back page dominated by 32 different Specialty Rolls. My friend and I started our meal by picking two rolls. * Bill Gates - Inside: spicy tuna, tuna, salmon, shrimp, avocado white fish, egg omelet, imitation crab sticks, soy paper. Outside: cucumber, ponzu sauce. * Super Boston - Inside: Boston sauce, cucumber, salmon. Top: salmon, green onion. The circumference of each piece in the Super Boston seemed small compared to elsewhere. The Bill Gates had six pieces which was a standard quantity for a riceless roll. The quality of the fish in both rolls was acceptable. We then selected a Love Boat which was 15 pieces of sashimi: Chef's Choice, and 8 pieces of sushi: tuna, salmon, yellowtail, escolar (2 pieces each). A boat must have been the popular choice for the evening as there were at least three parties ahead of us who had ordered the same item, including one group who had a larger boat that contained twice the quantity of fish. The queue of boats had slowed down the chefs so the kitchen took close to half an hour before our food was ready. The arrangement on the boat was beautiful and photogenic. Plenty of dabs of wasabi were provided. The yellowtail had the best taste of the group while each piece had a similar quality as what we had received in the rolls. The service from our waiter was pretty good as he checked our table occasionally. I would say our dining experience was worth 3.5 stars. read more

I haven't been here for about 10yrs I think. I used to dine in often when I was a college student, but service was mediocre then. I was in the area for a hospital visit, and decided to take my parents here, as it was there first time. We parked in the parking garage as there weren't any stalls available on the top floor. Not too bad, just need to pay for parking prior to exiting the garage. There is a pay station by the elevators, opposite from the stairwells. There was a larger outdoor seating area this time, but it wasn't too chilly as they had heat lamps blasting near the tables- thank goodness! The ambiance was great too. What really stood out was their service today. We were greeted kindly both coming in and going out- totally superb in my book! The staff were very friendly and hospitable. The food was delicious too! My parents enjoyed all that we ordered. Everything tasted fresh too. My mother doesn't usually like the miso soups given at Japanese/Korean restaurants, but she certainly enjoyed their miso soup today. Even asked for a second bowl! Glad I returned. Sushi/fish was really fresh. MUST GET! YUM! My manfriend ordered Bulgogi bento box. The flavors of the Bulgogi was okay, but not impressive. We also split a Pink Panda roll (no rice, spicy tuna, avocado, imitation crab, salmon, soy paper, and hot sauce). Sushi/fish was really fresh. Their website didn't have a background or a story. I will note that parking is an absolute nightmare for their plaza, especially on weekends when parking is free. Famous Chirashi Salad. (4.75/5): Didn't get this at the restaurant actually, but it is my go to when I order take out from here. The portions are massive and you get a huge variety of cubed fish on a bed of salad and sushi rice. This would be my most recommended dish from here by far! Love Boat (3.75/5): Very aesthetic and the quality of the fish is quite good. I only wish that they had a bit more variety in the types of fish and nigiri on the boat. Tempura Udon (4/5): This one looks quite plain, but truly surprised me with how delicious it was! While the noodles are pretty standard, the broth is a wonderful blend of konbu and a strong mushroom stock that absolutely made this dish. Nice little gem next to where we stayed at Hyatt hotel. So nice we didn't have to go far at all in La Jolla for top notch sushi! Was worried about seats with my family of 5, including one baby, and 2 dogs (1 small, 1 medium). Luckily they have outdoor seating that allowed all of us to dine-in and as long as your dogs are well behaved and don't bark, they're welcome! Getting right to the point - their Baked Salmon specialty roll is simply to die for. This is my favorite roll of all sushi, by far, and it's difficult to come across a spot that knows how to do Baked Salmon perfectly from the sauces, ingredients, and arrangement, and temperature. I haven't had baked salmon this perfect in a very, VERY long time. So good we ordered 2! Don't mess it up with soy sauce or anything else. Just eat it the way it is and you won't regret it. Other than the baked salmon that really stood out last night, their Takoyaki was simply DELICIOUS! Perfectly done! Salmon and eel sushi were on point and melted in our mouths. Albacore Attack specialty roll was fantastic but just beware it's a bit slicy. Others we tried were good but didn't leave a "mark" - Love Volcano and Samurai specialty rolls. Good but didn't stick out to me as great. They're always busy but just call ahead to find out their wait time. Service is very friendly and wonderful! They do their best to keep everything going as to not make you wait long. Outdoor seating is very convenient for family (and behaved dogs that don't bark) and environment has a chill ambience so you can enjoy their delicious Japanese dishes. We got the Crunch roll, classic California roll, the Baked Salmon roll, and Unagi roll. My personal favorites were the crunch roll and Baked salmon roll. Perfection!! However the service is not it. I almost got up and left 3 different times. After sitting down when there were plenty of empty tables, the server didn't come to greet us or bring water for over 10 min. Then there was a huge delay before we got to order. The food wait was probably the shortest wait, about 20-25 min after we ordered. But girl, we waited 30 min after we finished eating for them to bring us the check (after they took our dishes)! Not a server in sight and I was waiting at the host stand asking to close us out twice! When I finally paid it was because I went up with my card and demanded to close out the check. Walking in, the decor is nice: very tropical and colorful with large tv screens outside. There is space inside by the sushi bar to eat, but we decided to sit outside because it felt nice outside and seemed more lively. We ordered the hamachi appetizer, which came out very crispy, flaky, and served with a thick soy sauce on the side. We enjoyed eating this and the charred bits on the end. We also ordered the double crunch and samurai roll. The double crunch was nicely sized, good initiation crab mix inside, but the tempura not as warm and fresh as it could be. The samurai was good, definitely for the spicy tuna lovers. We were full off all of this! Sushi is reasonably priced, nicely sized, and tasty. We don't go here often because parking is always bad but this time we got lucky. Miso soup was a miso soup. It was basic but miso soup doesnt need to be anything but basic. Uni was very good. Fresh, sweet, and melted in my mouth like butter. Spicy garlic edamame had a balance of spiciness with the garlic. The chicken katsu bento was delicious and not greasy. Hanachi kama was a surprise. I was expecting a small piece of fish but when served I was pleasantly surprised/. It was also moist but crispy and not dry. Bill gates roll was great. But dont be shy to use your hand to eat this. Everyone wears masks including customers, but you are able to dine comfortably without masks on while you are seated at your table of course. I've always liked the sushi here, and it's been tough finding a good sushi place since we moved from LA. I recommend eating here or dining in. I tried Nozomi a handful of years ago when I lived about a minute away and had somewhat mixed feelings about it. I tried a variety of their rolls from their happy hour menu, which as I recall, wasn't all full-sized rolls. There were at least a few good rolls. I then came back with a specific hankering for baked lobster rolls, and while the roll was really fancy (it was literally lit), it wasn't the most satisfying roll I had had. Something that did keep me coming back for a while is their takoyaki. It was surprisingly probably some of the best takoyaki I ever had, but it was five pieces (that were half-spheres) for like $6, so that phase ended about a year later. Can't quite recall at what point I felt that Nozomi was just an okay spot, but I found myself not coming back for years. Fast forward to now! I don't know just how much they've changed overall, but I did delivery yesterday and decided to give them another try since they were the fastest sushi option for me. I did the salmon crunch and the shrimp with onion (am unable to name check the rolls at this moment; sorry for awful takeout photos lol) and I have to say I was actually pretty impressed. The salmon on the former was seared perfectly and it was just a really solid roll I would totally get again. The latter was just as solid, and I'm glad I tried Nozomi again. They also included a free miso soup and fruit bowl (potato chips in the sushi, too), which I found really cute. I noticed that they put in rolled-up Saran Wrap to avoid things moving around, which was really thoughtful but I felt was unnecessary. Sushi isn't bad at all, I've tried some of the rolls here and they're pretty good! I just don't think they are too different than any other sushi place. What I always come back for is the Green Kalguksu Noodles!! Literally one of the best things here, it's a must try! The bowl is pretty big, so I'd recommend sharing. read more

we parked next to the restaurant.. so it wasnt too bad for parking or waiting to be seated.. the food came out good as always.. i had to get the tofu again cause it was just that good.. but then im a tofu person.. i can eat tofu all day.. be sure to get the fresh wasabi it's definitely hits differently from the wasabi paste. once i went fresh wasabi there was no turning back.. the lighting outdoor was nice with amber like colors and tvs all around to watch games or fights.. read more
