Where do I start. Phoenix Nu Car rental. I reserved a "premium car" for my niece from Nu Car through Priceline. Total $128 including taxes and fees for 2 days. Upon arrival she was told they can't give her the Premium Car because she's under 25. They put her in a Chevy Malibu. And charged her FOUR HUNDRED NINETY TWO DOLLARS ADDITIONAL TO THE $128 from Priceline. Jeff at this location absolutely took advantage of my young niece. When I had her go back to reverse the TWELVE SURCHARGES he added he refused. Not only did he refuse he said actually she can't even take this car. If she wants to rent with them she has to take a mini van and it will be an ADDITIONAL $100 I asked for is to be able to speak to a manager. He said there is no manager here. (This was another lie) I told my niece to go sit in the original car they gave her until we figure this out. Jeff then came out to harrass her he already switched the rental in the system to a mini van with no resolution or acknowledgement to what we were wanting. And she better not drive this car unless she was to be pulled over and arrested. On the phone with your customer service in Las Vegas call center a girl named Crystal had good intentions to try to help and sent messages to the manager on Duty Juliana. We were told she'd been updated on the situation and she could help us. Talking to Juliana was again an absolute dead end. She said there was nothing she could do. If we wanted to rent a car it would have to be the mini van and it will absolutely be additional money. Regardless of what we reserved. And addressed non of the surcharge issues. I told her to cancel everything and refund our money because this has been the worst experience in ANY retail situation I've ever been apart of. I rented a car the representative pushed the insurance she did not disclose it was 64.00 a day after I told her I have my own. my booking was for 3 days my final bill was 498.00 I took back the vehicle full they charged me for junk charges and fees. I booked through Expedia it was only 118,00 which they took the fee upfront so basically for a 3 day car rental I was charged 600.00. my flight was cheaper also this site is not at the airport. when I was returning the car it was different than the invoice address which had me going in circles trying to locate do I didnt miss my flight. Be careful of the fraudulent charges. they say they will email the receipt upon drop off and I did not see these fees until I was at airport. get a print out immediately it does not matter how busy they claim to be. read more

I rented a car through Expedia and saw it was from this place which I never heard of before. Once I landed and looked for NU, I realized it was not located at the airport. You have to follow the signs to a pretty creepy pick up spot and then a shuttle takes you to the location. Once I arrived, I went into a pretty sketchy looking building. I was unsure but ended up having no issues. I reserved a compact SUV and was given a 2024 Nissan Rogue. I noticed it had a temporary Utah tag which was odd but the vehicle was fine and had no damage. I declined all of the extra insurance they offered and they held a deposit of $300 on my credit card. When I returned the vehicle, there was a young man whom I don't believe spoke much English. He pointed to a spot and I pulled the car up and got out. He said key I said receipt and he said email. I gave him the key and shortly received an email. This place is different but my total price was $145 for the 3 days which is pretty good. read more

Not what was promised - When I saw them pop up on Expedia I assumed they were legit so I took the lower price for the higher quality vehicle. I was willing to have the inconvenience of walking to a guest lot by Phoenix airport and then taking their van to their distant location. Their site promised "our Mercedes Benz shuttle will be waiting for you" except that the Mercedes Van didn't exist and the van that did arrive didn't get there for 45 minutes. THIS IS A SHOWSTOPPER IF YOU ARE ON A SCHEDULE. When I got to the desk they pushed for extra insurance pretty hard. I imagine employees get bonus compensation for the sale. The vehicle was in good condition although it had not been washed but it was good enough for my purposes. Staff were not friendly or super attentive but got the job done. I cannot recommend Nu Car Rentals to anyone. Do not trust the low rental price, because you will get charged other things without your knowing or planning. It is not worth it. I should have trusted the reviews. Unfortunately my credit card company pairs with them for some of their travel benefits so it made sense for me to use those. I will be communicating with Capital One this issue, so that they consider not pairing with this unethical company. My recent car rental was pre-paid using Capital One travel rewards. Rental staff at desk did NOT explain extra charges including Loss Damage Waiver and pre-paid gas. Car was returned with over a half tank of gas and Nu did not refund me any amount. Loss damage waiver totaling 31.99/day or 95.97 was charged. This total was NOT discussed with me by the staff. Staff rushed me through signing, did not explain added charges AT ALL. Typical bait and switch business behavior. I have escalated this to NU Customer Service who simply sent me a screenshot of my bill which I already had, without replying to my issues at all. A month later I received a charge on my credit card directly from NU car rental that was 2X the amount that I already was charged by Priceline. MAKE SURE THEY DO NOT CHARGE YOU EXTRA! "Do NOT USE THIS COMPANY! As MANY REVIEWS state they are very pushy with insurance. Even though you verbally agree to decline insurance make sure your LOSS WAIVER DAMAGE section that you initial says DECLINE because they will attempt to put AGREE and then rush you through the paperwork. The print in these boxes were so small that I figured I could just trust what was verbally discussed and I proceeded to quickly initial without combing through, cause why would I think I had to right? BIG MISTAKE because one of the "boxes" was an agreement for insurance. After hearing the price of the "temporary hold" I stated my concerns about proceeding and the associate assured it would be refunded once the vehicle returned, which made me feel comfortable to continue. I later noticed that the "hold" was double the amount of the original hold fee and when I called to understand why because that I already paid IN FULL with Expedia (thinking it was just the total of the charge and a mistake) they explained the charge was for "Insurance" which I clearly declined. I asked to speak directly with the office that I rented from and I was informed the only way to do that was to directly go into the office that I rented from which I was not able to do. I was told to write an email and the woman on the phone stated "it wont likely be resolved" seeing I signed the paperwork (which was iterated that it was temporary) There are NUMEROUS reviews stating this exact issue so clearly they are purposefully misleading people which is awful! NEVER AGAIN! Please go with someone more reputable. I ended up paying double what I initially thought. And to top it all off this company is NOT on site at the airport which is not stated it is a whole adventure to get there including walking waaayyyy past all the other REPUTABLE companies completely out of the airport and then wait 20 minutes to be shuttled another 15 min. This has mostly to do with their customer service and misleading practices at their Phoenix Sky Harbor location. Like others have already indicated, they try to include a bunch of additional charges that they don't tell you about up front. We were told that they had a mid size rental for about $40/day. That seemed like a fair price, but the rental agent started talking about how they include roadside service, gas and coverage for damage and loss. We declined CDW and gas, but had to press the agent that we didn't want to pay for those charges, especially since our credit card covers CDW. The agent then tried to tell us that we needed LDW, which CDW does not cover (ie, loss of vehicle). When we pressed, she indicated that it was 'Arizona law.' We relented, but when we later examined the contract in more detail, LDW doubled the entire cost of the rental and she slipped in another charge for roadside service which we didn't need because we have AAA. We later tried to contest this, but it was difficult to get through to their main customer service number, although we eventually did and they indicated that they would investigate. When we returned the car, the agent and the manager were both rude and refused to reverse the charges, even though they were sneakily included and we were not given the option to decline. We eventually heard from the corporate office who were courteous and promptly reversed the charges we contested. The car itself was fine, so no complaints there. read more

This place engages in deceptive sales tactics. They do not inform you of the charges they are putting on you with the rental car. They simply expect you to read every single thing and hope you don't. Essentially they hope you trust that if they didn't talk about it, you'll sign. Most of us trust that if they didn't tell you about it, then they won't add it, but they prey on that. I should have read these reviews before I rented a car from this place. As I went to pick up my vehicle which I booked online They pushed their insurance coverage. And didn't inform me that I had an option to use my own full cover insurance. And as I booked it I already bought extra insurance coverage for the vehicle and they informed me I needed to get another liability insurance so they sold me another insurance which they said it was required by the state and I needed to get it. Which caused my price to almost double. On top of that they said I prepaid $49.93 for the gas of the vehicle so it would be better for me if I bring it back without refilling it cause they had the cheapest gas in the car rental place at $3.15 and if I refilled it myself somewhere else they said I'd pay about $4 a gallon so I'd save money. Which was a lie. i opened my car gas app and there were $3 a gallon gas stations everywhere. Within a mile or less from nu car rental place. I wasn't sure if they use part of the $49 to refill the gas tank or take it all. when I looked at my credit card statement I found out they take the full $49. So I used close to half a tank of gas in my rented vehicle which would have cost me about $20-$25 to refill back to full. So technically I paid $6-$7 per tank of gas. This place has lot of unethical practices, there's no transparency, and no clear communication. You get there they give you a paper and say this is your total and give you no options. I was only in town to see him for 2 days i was over a barrel . i had the choice of getting shuttled back to the airport , walk the country mile again, wait in line at another rental place wasting even more of my precious mother-son time. We got this reservation via Priceline so did not know who the rental car was through until we paid. The car was fine itself was fine - nothing special (Chevy Malibu) but finding how to get to the rental car office took us an hour. It is NOT at the airport but you have to take the Sky Train out to the rental car facility then there are signs that say NU Car Rentals go to Visitor Parking. Apparently no one knows where that is as we were went to two different areas. Finally a kind lady at one of the other agencies walked us to the access. The directions in the email from NU says go to Level P - well, there are 3 of those! There's a video but it's way too fast and wifi was sketchy - tried to call and after 20 minutes on hold got disconnected., Took way too much time and then when returning the car you go through the same thing. When we arrived to pick the car up they refused to honor it and charged us an extra $261 dollars that we really had no other options because of times constraints and they already had the original payment and wanted the "balance". In retrospect, I'm sure this was their full intention because they wouldn't let the original online contract print and instead, said they'd email it. The email contained nothing but a long number, so no proof that I had a contract. Also, they are NOT in the air port which is not made clear on the website. Not an honest rental car agency. Switch and bait. "Suppliers choice" gets a good rate but when you get there, they want to give you a mercedes van and say that is "all they have and the cheapest." And then offer you, saying they just received a cancellation, for additional money, a smaller car. Their parking lot was full of smaller cars! They abuse the advertising "supplier choice" and put customers in a bad spot .. either take a car you don't want or pay more. I was in back of 3 other people and heard the same line .." you have the whole team, we have a van for you". To top it off .. i was told the car was in the back lot .. handed the keys. I had to ask what color is van. I was standing in the parking lot locking and unlocking the van to see if i could find it that way. Finally, someone asked me what i was looking for and pointed the van to me. Needless to say, i will not deal with DISHONEST rental agencies. Don't get scammed! Do not use this rental company. They are scamming people left and right. You will be tempted to book your car rental through them (even though they are located a long walk, then shuttle bus ride from the airport), because you think you've found a really good bargain. That is not the case. Whatever your booking price is, expect to pay twice that amount. Once you return the car, they will claim that you didn't deny their "optional" insurance. We did deny it and were still charged for it. They give you one price through Expedia, and then you have to pay the "balance" when you drop off the car. Our rental agreement through Expedia was for $210; our receipt says we paid in full. When we dropped off the car, we had to pay an additional $250! the worst car rental I ever used. 1. their location is not in the airport car rental center with others, we found it out in an hard way. 2. our flight was delayed, also took us 45min from baggage claim to wait for their own shuttle to pick us up, and then drove to their off site office. 3. the worst was we were told at the office because we were two hours later than the reservation, they didn't have the car type we reserved for us at all, they found a bigger one, but charged us $2000 for the same renting period as our reservation, that we pre paid for $380. we had to take it since it was late and we were tired from the traveling. we swapped a smaller car the second day, since we didn want to pay $400 a day for a rental car. and the manager was not helpful at all. so the worst car rental ever. whatevr the deals they offer, they are not worth the troubles read more

But the problem I have is that when booking a premium car via Priceline with Nu Car Rental- they don't tell you upfront that if you are local you cannot get any other vehicle other than compact, minivan or intermediate SUV (which they don't even have those on their website). So we booked and paid for in advance along with purchased insurance for a dodge charger GT. After booking I started reading the reviews and quickly panicked because many people said they got the old bait and switch and then forced to pay more upon pickup at the counter, or leave without a substitute car and zero refund. Long story short, if you are an out of towner, just know the car pick up is not in the airport, it's a good distance via their shuttle or your own Uber, but also know you can get the car of your choice and it'll probably be a little cheaper than more reputable car rental places. But if you are LOCAL you CANNOT get the car of your choosing, you are limited and they do not tell you this on Priceline nor on Nu Car website, they let you book, take your money, tell you it's non refundable and then when you go to pick up your car it's gonna be a different story, so honestly do not bother.
