Classic bait and switch ripoff agency. "Subcompact car" meant a tiny EV (No gas engine) with an 80 mile range and 12 hour charge time. Four sat there and 10 days later none had moved an inch. But we were driving to Grand Canyon so "luckily" Nu Car had "just one gas car available if you upgrade now" for more than double the original price. Directions to rental site said "take tram to Car Rental Center and follow signs" which turned out to be a 1/2 mile outdoor (100F) walk to a shuttle stop and a 1/2 hour wait outside for the bus. (Very difficult to walk away and find a reputable car agency.) $4.99/ day got us "free" tolls. Crystal was very sweet as she said "I think there are tolls near Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon and a woman got charged $200 for tolls ($100 per toll) because she didn't buy the plan". But guess what? THERE ARE NO TOLLS IN ALL OF ARIZONA! Crystal totally lied multiple times (like Nu Car has already recharged your credit card for this rental - incorrect. Read all the fine print . They deceive you at the counter by not explaining the additional charges beyond the originally planned price. Sure you don't want to sit there in read but after they are done they will be charging double the amount of the planned pricing. Customer service was unable to help a family who tried to enjoy a great stay then was pressed over budget due to the bamboozle. If you want a good shop check the reviews . There basic insurance cost more than my insurance for 3 cars and their lies on filling up there costs you 3 times the amount because it was 3/4 full and $75 to fill up . Got a pretty sick car. And purple, which I never would have chosen, but it's what they brought and I thought, alright, rad. They did use language like, "Will you be getting just the standard insurance, then?" but this isn't my first rodeo so I just said, "No. I won't be getting any add-ons." and that was that. My experience was very similar with another reviewer who said, if you're looking for a deal and time is not an issue, this is great! :) Very true. From arrival to departure, it took about an hour to finally rent a car. However, the driver of the shuttle was friendly, and overall it wasn't a bad experience. If I could give 0 stars, I would! Never rent a car from NU CAR! I have never experienced a more dishonest company and pure trickery in renting a car. Although I understand it is my responsibility to read all the fine print, let's be real! Who does that? I was tricked out of almost $300 of my money based upon their verbal explanations of what I was actually signing. For example, I thought I was signing the agreement to indicate I did not want their insurance. Truth is, I was signing for their insurance. That's just one example of how the verbal explanation did not match the written contract. They charge you an airport fee and they don't even pick you up at the airport they pick you up outside the airport and then drive you 2 miles to their office, you think you're saving money but they try to gauge you with all these different insurances they want you to upgrade. In my experience, this place truly was not the horror story that some of these reviews make it out to be. After taking the airport shuttle to the rental car center, we waited less than 10 minutes for the NU car shuttle to take us the rest of the way. Once we were there it did take a little while (maybe 30 minutes) to actually get the car because they were so busy, but the desk agent wasn't pushy about warranty add-ons, the car was clean and washed when we got it, and we even got a complimentary upgrade from a Maxima to a Charger. If you value convenience above all else, maybe this isn't the place for you. But if you're willing to take two shuttles and potentially wait a little longer, then you can get some great deals here. read more

This car rental agency was subpar. Vehicle we received had over 27,000 miles, and the interior was dirty dashboard and interior windows were not clean. We drove the SUV to Sedona and Grand Canyon at one of our gas stops we realized there was a screw in a tire. For safety purposes we paid to have the screw removed and the flat fixed for $54.99 at a big O tire dealer. Upon returning the car they refused to pay us back for the maintenance performed to fix the tire . They then charged us 154.00 for a supplemental insurance that we clearly stated we did not want at time of rental. Be careful of this cut rate budget rental. These people are scammers, I rented a car online go to pick up the car. They reel me the car is going to be $1,000 deposit so I went with the lower quality car. The guy at the counter told me that since I'm doing so he'll wave the fill up fee. I returned the car with basically half a tank and they charged me 200+ extra. Then I called and they said that I denied the pre pay fuel when they guy told me I wouldn't have to fill it up. Sounds like a scam to me. Looks like a lot of people feel that way. If I could give 0 stars, I would. Nu Car Rental is in a SUPER shady part of town. When taking the shuttle, I was a bit nervous, like where are we going? When returning the car, we drove by a prison that's around the corner! We came on WM weekend, so we knew it was going to be busy, but they had 2 workers on a Saturday! It took an hour just to get a car. There are hidden fees, and they lie to your face. The man at the counter asked if we wanted to have the insurance through them or decline. I said decline, because my credit card has car rental insurance through it. He said no problem. A week or two after we returned the car, I get a charge on my credit card for another $300. I emailed NU and asked what this is for , and they said it's because I declined their insurance. I said I know I did, I did that on purpose, they said ok we will refund you the money. They did not refund the money! I sent a few more emails following up, when am I going to receive the money. Crickets and still crickets. Now, I'm going through the process to file a dispute with my credit card company. Do not book this place, just because it's cheaper than all the other major car rental companies! You'll end up with a headache trying to communicate with them and get money back. Believe all these other reviews who are saying negative things, they are all true! If I could give a negative review for this company I would. I rented from them on a recent trip to Phoenix, Arizona. Mind you, THEY ARE NOT AT THE AIRPORT! NOT AT THE AIRPORT! You take a shuttle, farther away, to a dingy street away from the airport. I had my young son with me and actually felt fearful. Once there, I was mislead by the sales associate and charged an extra $155.00 more than what my husband already paid, which showed up once the car was returned. When they tell you they will fill up the tank of gas when you return, because they can get gas cheaper, they fail to tell you they will charge for THE ENTIRE TANK OF GAS REGARDLESS IF YOU ONLY USED A QUARTER TANK. This was upwards of $55. Read the fine print when signing anything from these people. Have them slow down, and if you do not agree with them, do not sign. My sales associate was so convincing, I trusted him. He did not explain the process correctly at all. They are crooks. When I disputed the charges for the gas and some extra insurance they tagged on (I had my own already), they would not reimburse my money to me. This is not acceptable because I asked the sales representative several times to clarify what would be charged to my card. His response, was just the deposit, which is reimbursed once the car is returned. Thank goodness I got that back. They make you pay $300-$3000 for a deposit depending on certain factors. That blew me away. What would I have done if I had to pay $3000 for a deposit, in a scary neighborhood, with a small child in tow if I did not have that money available on my card! The check in process was the more ridiculous thing took almost 20 mins at the register itself. We reserved a premium car on Expedia like I usually do, however with AZ license they don't allow you to get a premium car (rented a Charger and we got a mini van) and they gave some BS reason about ppl taking cars to Mexico and not returning, no other company does that. They charge for an additional driver and they didn't even offer any sort of discount for not being able to get the car we wanted. I needed to get the car for another day and they quoted their price at $120 but on Expedia is the same as I rented which is $50 a day. Just absolutely ridiculous! This was my first time using NU car Rentals and it was great! I was a little nervous since they are not located in PHX main car rental center, but you have to take a shuttle from there. However shuttles run every 15 minutes and when I got to the pick up location there was already a shuttle waiting and I was able to hop on and head to their facility. When I got to the rental desk there was a short wait. At the desk MICHEL was there to help me and make sure I had everything I needed for my trip. He was very pleasant and professional! DO NOT RENT AN ELECTRIC CAR. I received an electric Mini with 90 miles of range (there was no warning of the limited range when booking), and when I returned the car at 75% I was charged a "fuel" fee of $62 including apparently mandatory taxes and surcharges. Compare that with the listed fuel charge of $12.99 per gallon for gas cars returned unfilled! I get you pay a premium, but $62 feels wildly high. Compare at Hertz charging $35 flat for their recharge fee. I only needed the car for a few hours and about 30 miles, so it should have been the perfect use case for an electric car. Unfortunately, the charging infrastructure just isn't there in the Phoenix area to "top off" the rental before returning (there are no chargers near the NU location and the recommended EVGo app shows only a handful of fast chargers across the valley). Plus, the staff at the location is unfamiliar with electric car logistics so they couldn't estimate the actual refill costs during the sale process. Other fun aspects of the car rental: 1) hour long wait on arrival to rent the car, not counting any shuttle time/wait; 2) The sales guy automatically added insurance costs to my rental, saying "so you wanted the basic insurance" before I stopped him and emphasized I was declining everything; 3) it's an off-airport location, so be aware it's a trek from the rental car center to a distant parking lot where there's a sandwich board advertising the NU shuttle. 4) the car had crumbs all over the backseat/floors and a(n unused!) pair of socks from the previous occupant read more

I should've looked this up before I ever booked. You basically have to take the train to the rest of the rental car properties, which is no big deal. But then you have to walk forever to catch a shuttle to stand in a line that is horrendous. Never again!! Be warned -- 2 hours after landing and still in line. If you could care less about the cost or are on a strict schedule, stick with one of the traditional nationally known rental car agencies. I would have appreciated a little bit more transparency about the process of getting to the location, as I was not aware of this information about having to take 2 shuttles until I received the confirmation email. I went back to Expedia and went through the process of booking again just to see if it ever lets you know the agency is not actually at the airport prior to completing the booking and it does not. Everything indicates that it is AT the airport. There was about a 20 minute wait for the shuttle to pick us up at the airport and then waited about another 40 minutes in line at the agency. The agents at the desk were absolutely miserable and had zero personality or customer service attitude. They did push the extra insurances and add-ons pretty hard, but we declined all and there was no issue. Unlike other reviews here have stated, I believe the agent very clearly explained you could "pre-pay" a tank of fuel at the rate on the wall, or return full. If you declined to do either of those, it would be filled at $11.99/gal. We decided to just return the car full because gas is $2 cheaper than their "pre-buy" rate. Drop off was simple, it took 5 minutes and they assisted with our luggage. For return to the airport, we elected to take a $12 Lyft ride rather than dealing with multiple shuttles. Car was great, no problems, new and clean. Now that I know their process, I would potentially use again but I would definitely use an Uber/Lyft to get there, rather than the multiple location and shuttle process. But it seems like there business model (at least right now) is roping in a one and done customer with their low prices and really doing NOTHING throughout the process to retain someone as a repeat customer. read more

WHAT A MISTAKE! We decided to rent a car just for a quick day trip but when we got to Sky Harbor car rental center, we had to take an additional Nu shuttle from the Sky Harbor Car rental center. The shuttle is supposed to run every 15 mins but we waited over 25 mins. When we finally arrived at the NU center, we waited in line just to get our car for an additional hour! So I paid for a Mid Size SUV. Take a look at the picture. It's a total joke. A nissan kick is a subcompact crossover, it's barely an SUV and most certainly not an mid size of any sort. And it was dirty as all get out on delivery. To add insult to what they were giving me, they also bait and switch the price. But wait there's more! They also gave me a car that wasn't even LEGAL in Arizona! I got pulled over in Sedona and the paperwork they gave me didn't even have a completed VIN # on it or a state issued paper tag on the back. They literally gave me a car that wasn't legal in the state of Arizona. I had to deal with getting a warning late at night as I'm trying to complete my travel to Sedona. Lovely little surprise. But the fake price sales tactic is next level. I had received a quote for a car rental for $210. When I signed my paperwork at their counter, NEVER at any point when I was picking up my car and signing paperwork did they disclose added fees to my quote. NOT ONCE. They said the following and I quote "bring the car back empty" Never disclosed the fee for this. Said it included roadside assistance, never disclosed there was a fee for that. Never asked for insurance nor would I have elected for it, but was charged exorbitantly for it. They turn their screen around and ask you to initial but don't show you that you're initialing their fees and they conveniently do not tell you. The guy behind the counter just says as you are initialing their contract "this just says to bring it back empty, this just says that this if roadside assistance is included" he continued on and not one time said these were extras or disclosed the costs associated with nor do you SEE them as you initial it. They never disclosed the final cost when you initial anything either, they didn't provide a printed version of those final costs or anything you signed, they simply email it to you AFTER you pick up the car. The rental contract they give you at the counter when picking up the car has absolutely NO COSTS ON IT WHATSOEVER. When I returned the car, they did not provide a receipt, they simply told me it would be emailed to me. When I received the email, the final cost was $537.23, when what I agreed to pay was $210.39. Nu Car Rentals added $326.94 in hidden and undisclosed fees is absolutely abhorrent business practices. And that is after the over river and through the woods trek it took just to get here. I will use a better known agency going forward. My bad, lesson learned. And to add to this negative experience. One star is TOO High. If I could I'd give them -10! This organization is a total scam. We reserved a car through Travelocity, picking the "manager's special." When we arrived at the airport, they said that the only choice was an electric car with an 80 mile range, or we could pay double. Worse, we discovered that they perpetrated some sort of scam on EVERY customer who made it to the counter . "Didn't bring your insurance papers. Too bad that's an additional $20 / day" -- it varied by customer but absolutely no one got away with the price they had previously chosen. Bottom line. They are dreadful. Next step - class action lawsuit. The only good news is that customer service agreed to a full refund of our prepaid amount. We will see if that actually happens. read more
