Truth be told, I discovered this place on accident as I debated what to eat from Takumi Taco. When I didn't find their options very appetizing (sorry Takumi - just an at-the-moment reaction!), my eyes scrolled towards the empanadas. Little did I know that the empanadas were actually Nucha's, not Takumi. Oops! So long story short, Takumi is selling Nucha's empanadas. I got two very different empanadas for lunch: the portabello, spinach, mozzarella and the apple, cranberries, & nutella. The portabello/spinach/mozz was alright. Decent amount of portabello & spinach, but not enough mozzarella. The Apple/Cranberries/Nutella was pretty good. Got a nice flavor of nutella as an after-taste of sorts. However, neither of the empanadas were earth-shattering to me. Both were missing the extra bounce that would make me remember their food forever. Each Empanada was $5, so it's alright for a lunch. You probably need 3 for a full lunch, but I was able to suffice with just 2. Would I make my way back here intentionally? I'm not sure. The location with I find a bit jocose it can be pass unnoticed if you don't have your eyes wide open but is next to a small park which makes it perfect to come here in the summertime. I eat the Spicy Chicken: chicken, chipotle peppers, tomatoes, onions, peppers and fresh basil which wasn't spicy, but it had a nice and good taste.I also order a argentine: Pat lafrienda ground beef, onions, peppers, scallions, potatoes , olives and white dough, a bit salty but not bad. So my hubbs had left for work and I was all alone to eat whatever in whichever order I wanted. It a beautifully chilly, sunny day and I strolled my bundled up ass down 32nd to get myself breakfast. I was surveying the area and figured i'd grab myself an appetizer at Nuchas. I asked for the bacon egg and cheese empanada, but they had already run out. Hmm no other real breakfast-y option so I did what any other foodie would do. I got myself a short rib empanada with a hot cortado. Hmm. the empanada was okay. Sunday afternoon, no one in line as we needed something fast while waiting for our Uber to show up. Opted against a meal; instead just ordering a single Argentine Empanada ($4). Food comes out within 2 minutes and served with a choice of hot sauce. the empanada itself is bigger than their counterparts at Mama's empanadas, while also being slightly toasted/flaky on the outside. Not too hot, easy to eat, and the hot sauce works well with the meat inside. Extra sauce costs extra so have to be a little stingy on the pours. Spicy cheese wasn't spicy nor cheesy. It tasted like that fake cheese on bagel bites. The caramelized onions overpowered everything. The spicy short rib tasted kinda gross. I first got to know about them couple of years ago at dumbo festival as I tasted the best empanada from a food truck. Leaping many years ahead; I am glad that they have a permanent stall by koreatown close to Penn station; however this time the chicken empanada did not live up to the standard. If ever you're in the Korea Town-Herald Square area and need a quick, tasty bite on the go, this is your place! One thing about Nuchas that hooked me (aside from their slamming empanadas, clearly), was how pleasant everyone is and definitely a factor in my coming back regularly. At 4 bucks a pop, these are not the typical empanada prices I am used to, but hey, it's midtown. Now, on to the good stuff. The empanadas are always warm and flavorful, just the way I like them. And...they have vegan options! While I am not a vegan, this is especially a huge deal since the seitan al pastor and shitake curry choices are both something to write home about...full-on party in your mouth. Delicious! To date I have tried the seitan al pastor (vegan), cilantro shrimp, shitake curry (vegan), spicy chicken, Italian sausage, apple/nutella, Argentine, and Portobello options, listed in order of most favorite to least. Came here the other day while I was waiting for my uber to arrive. A major pet peeve of mine is when I'm looking at the menu & I feel the workers staring at me the whole time. I get that workers have to watch customers to know when they're ready to order as I worked in the food service industry before. But it was uncomfortable to be stared at the whole time I was trying to decide what I wanted. I ended up getting a chicken empanada. It tasted pretty good but I wouldn't ever get another empanada from this place because it was extremely overpriced for something so small. Just stopped here for my "Meal Pass" lunch of the day. It's a counter/ stand between the streets by broadway and 32nd. It's a cute little stand and the lady in the counter was very pleasant. I got two Portobello Mushroom Empanadas that I was going to eat once I got back to work. However, they were the perfect temperature so I proceeded to eat them on the walk back to the office. If you love empanadas then you will love Nuchas. This place has some of the best empanadas in the area hands down! They bake their empanadas so you don't feel as guilty for eating 3 or 5. The dough to filling ratio is perfect and they are always piping hot fresh from the oven. I love that they are located in a little park so you can eat and enjoy the outdoors a bit. There has never been a long line when I show up which is nice if you're in a hurry and have a short break. I usually run here from job nearby and grab my favorite chicken or argentine empanadas. Tried this place yesterday as I was in the area. I have seen it a time or two before, man oh man am I glad I did! Best empanadas I've had in NYC. I tried two: the spicy chicken & the spicy cheese plus a bottle of water and I'm wishing I would have got a couple more! I really wanted the Jambalaya but they were out. Herald square lacks decent food trucks which pushes me to try Nuchas, I remember seeing them featured on a buzzfeed article, being claimed as one of the must eats in nyc so I decided to give it a shot. They had a 3 for $9 special so I got the argentine, portobello and jambalaya. The argentine was eh it reminded me of a Jamaican beef patty which I don't really like. The portobello was eh, I would stick to the meat based ones if I were you. The jambalaya was okay not a big fan of their rice filling, it was a little dry and tasteless for me. I had the sweet empanada, which has Apple, Pear and Nutella, as well as a cold brew iced coffee. The empanada was incredibly good, and the iced coffee was good. These guys serve up La Colombe, who always serve up great beans = tasty coffee. The folks who work here are incredibly nice... the customers not so much. read more

9/11/2014 I have seen this cart for years and ignored it. I work in the area and am therefore jilted and think...this is for the tourists. WRONG. I came out of a subway entrance I normally dont use and wanted some coffee... I was getting bored with oatmeal and figured why not try an Empanada too. I was hesitant but the cart hosts (people working there) were so nice I tried one. I then ordered a plain coffee and to my pleasure they had almond milk! He suggested a Latte....a treat I rarely afford myself. It was perfect! Great coffee. The empanada was warm (even after walking to my office) and spicy! They were 3 for $8 which is a deal because one is filling. I will return often for the coffee and every other time treat myself to an empanada (got watch my waist). Tried my first Nuchas today on recommendation. Firstly, love the area it's in. It can get a little busy around the stand because its a major subway station but there is a park and it's green and I wasn't being fussy. Tried the Spicy Chicken, which to my delight wasn't very spicy, just the perfect taste. It was light and fluffy and a good snack. Got colombian coffee to go as well. Delicious, quick, convenient & fairly priced. Can't go wrong with 3 empanadas for $8, even if it's $1 extra per empanada if you get short-rib or jumbalaya. Easy way to avoid the extra dollar: skip the short-rib. It's got more flavor than some would have you believe, but the Argentine is SO much better. Spicy chicken was good, but my least favorite of the 3 as far as flavor goes. That said, the chicken one was right out of the oven and had the best, flakiest shell. I don't know if the short-rib was the least fresh, but the bread was becoming soggy and after one bite, half the meat fell right out. Argentine wasn't as crispy and flaky as the fresh-out-of-the-oven, but still good. I would go back and get 3 Argentine empanadas. 4 stars out of 5 because the 2 employees at the food stand, while friendly, seemed confused. Very good Empanadas to my surprise. I'm Argentinian and a very hard audience in terms of food. In any case, these Empanadas caught my attention. I'm always craving for good Argentinian food in Manhattan and even Brooklyn but I find it hard to get the "real" thing. Insane prices and food that is more close to Mexican, my homesickness started to dissipate a while ago. Shelter in Williamsburg was the only one with decent baked Empanadas but at $6 each one and freeze on the inside I never came back. Nuchas has the whole thing. Argentinian beef, ham and cheese like many places in Buenos Aires and great medialunas also hard to find in the US. You'll get more like croissants not medialunas. Here you'll find a very close one, with the right sweetness. Talking specifically about the Empanadas, the beef and ham and cheese are the most popular and savory. The short rib was very onion-y with too little meat. The dough is OK. Not like the usual tapa de empanada but goes pretty well with the filling. The 3 for $10 is the best way to go. Having an empanada for $4 seems to much for me. Lastly, they have Cachafaz Alfajores which are the best ones in Argentina. That there adds so many extra points that you'll thank me later. The maicena is my favorite but all are amazing so get one of each!! read more

Picked up 2 empanadas to go. The Argentine one was sold out by 5pm (must be good) but I had 2 spicy chicken ones. Even after half an hour, they were still really warm, almost hot. Nuchas is mucho expensive. A lot of ingredients but no flavor. I make better empanadas than this. Not worth the $4 bucks in my opinion.
