Be careful sitting at the bar, at any moment in time, a small turtle like lady with lobster claws for hands may grab you from behind when you are not expecting it. She will ask you not to touch your hair, and you will feel violated. Her reasoning was that it's unacceptable to touch, or fix your hair inside a restaurant. This was an employee. Do not order the toilet water Negroni, unless you want to feel a deep state of regret. While seeking a downtown west side spot for an early dinner I noticed that a fellow Yelper who has never steered me wrong dined here in February and left a glowing review. So when the Temp is hitting 106 degrees is there a better time for a couple of glasses of wine and steaming plates of pasta? Heck no! Keep in mind the food is king here. This venue reminds me of the small family-owned Italian restaurants that you could find on the side streets in the North End of Boston. We started our adventure with a plate of veal meatballs. I almost teared up on my first bite as the taste brought me back to my childhood and my nonna's homemade meatballs. The gravy that accompanied them was perfectly chunky and we cleaned the plate using their delicious bread to ensure none of that red goodness was left behind. I had my eye on the Bucatini All'Amatriciana but who knew there is a pork cheek shortage so I had to go with option B their ribbon pasta with a meat sauce. Plus one opted for the chicken Parm with spaghetti. The pasta here is homemade and light as a feather. The chicken Parm was one of the best I've tasted since my last trip up north. Bernardo and his crew are just killing it with their simple Italian dishes. There are a number of dishes that I need to go back and try so N28 is going right to the top of my go-to for simple (peasant) Italian fare. Seating is limited so reservations are key. There is a patio but it's not the right season to be dining outside. There is a full bar with some interesting wine choices as well as specialty drinks and happy hour specials. We decided to go to Numero 28 for my mother's birthday, The first server we had was a bit grumpy and wouldn't listen to us, but the second server was great! He was nice, and attentive and even sang along with my family. The food was also delicious, I'd recommend the pesto gnocchi, the little sun-dried tomatoes in that pasta were to die for. Pretty solid Italian food but my bar is set pretty high in regards to Italian. Best thing I had was the Prosciutto and Mozzarella appetizer (not pictured). The prosciutto was delicious, you can tell it's the real deal and aged a bit. Other that that, the gnocchi itself was obviously handmade and great but the pesto sauce was very creamy and kind of weird. Still yummy but not what I was expecting at all. I had dinner at Numero28 before a concert at ACL Moody Theater. I sat at the bar, since I was dining alone. The bartender was super friendly and helpful in making suggestions. I started with a Negroni and the Prosciutto di Parma con Mozzarella. Both were outstanding. They brought bread out to go with the appetizer. I had Pinot Grigio with my main course. I went with the Cacio E Pepe for dinner, a house favorite. They serve it out of a parmesan drum. It was very tasty and entertaining to receive. The bartender poured me a bit more wine, since my pasta was a little delayed in coming out. This place has a wonderful and authentic atmosphere. We loved the food and service! As an Italian student of 2 years I was delighted to find out our server was actually Italian. I can't remember his name but he had great energy and is from Bologna. We ate Olive Marinate, Arancina Tradizionale, Gnocchi, Mortadella, Lasagna alla Bolognese, plus two glasses of red wine and a Spritz. The atmosphere was pretty great too! Again, I was happy to see that the place is actually run by Italians. I had heard that real Italian food is simple yet sophisticated and that was absolutely my experience. If you're looking for extra salty, American type food, go elsewhere. If you're craving true Italian food, give them a shot. I gave this restaurant a second chance. The first time they messed up my order and I didn't notice until I got home so I ate half and threw the other half in the trash. I went in again today right when they opened at 4:30 PM and they were definitely not ready to be open. The cook was not even there yet, so they said I could order a pizza but that was it. I don't eat much bread so that was not an option. I waited for the cook to show up and ordered a soup, meatballs. It took 30 minutes to get my order! The guy who came in after me was served 10 minutes before me. We were the only two in there. I came in contact with about four different employees and each one of them was very lackadaisical. We had just returned from Italy and were on the hunt for traditional Roman pasta. We'd heard that Numero 28 was the place to go so we tried it out. Saturday night was a bit busy and we didn't have a reservation so we had to wait about an hour for a table. There are plenty of places to pop in for a cocktail in the area so the hour flew by! Now, down to business, the food. The big winner of the meal was the cacio e pepe. It was prepared tableside in a giant wheel of Parmesan; it doesn't get any better than that!!! The gnocchi was solid and the pizza was on point with the signature Roman chewy crust. I was most looking forward to the Bucatini Allamatriciana as that is not something I'd ever remembered seeing on a menu outside of Italy. It was good but not quite as traditional as I'd hoped. To be fair, not sure anything could really hold up to what we had in Rome. It was really good, just a bit different. All in all I definitely recommend Numero 28 for delicious Italian food in Austin. We got there around 6:30PM and was seated right away for a party of two. The restaurant is SMALL so big parties may have a much longer wait time. If you're looking for a romantic, easy dining experience, I would NOT recommend this place, only because they move so so so fast. I've never felt so rushed to eat a meal before and that kind of muddied how great the food tasted tbh. We sat down and were served our appts and entrees within 10 minutes after ordering. Our servers kept hovering around our table to see if our plates were done and wouldn't ask to take the plates before they did. I felt like I was constantly being watched and it was a little nerve-racking. If that's how a normal Italian restaurant is, then a 10/10! The moments when I did have a chance to breathe and enjoy my meal, the food was FANTASTIC! The noodles were so flavorful in the bolognese, the veal meatball appts were the best things I've ever had, and the pistachio ice cream was unreal!!!! The food here is wonderful ranging from the pastas (none of which you can go wrong with), to the Eggplant Parmesan, to even the pizzas. The space itself inside is very small and cozy. The service is also great too. The one thing that is only fair to mention now that we are in the summer months is that the inside gets very hot as if there is no air conditioning. So if you are looking to be in a very cool place on a hot sunny day, this place might not be your spot. Also a couple of drinks, it was all good especially the pasta in the cheese wheel which is definitely original. Two things to watch for, one the wait...you can't make reservations here, so you wait...; two, the host is an unfriendly seemingly angry guy so beware. The place inside is very small, so if you are like me and hate the high tables, you will wait some more. For me, this is a one time experience, our bill was over two hundred dollars for 3 people so it isn't cheap. I expect a little better for that price range. read more
