Consistently. GOOD. Authentic. Italian food!! Somewhere where you don't need a reservation and get great quality, heart warming meals. I tell everyone about this place. We brought my boyfriends Italian mother and she approved. She was surprised to see one of their appetizers on the menu because her mother used to make it. They have Italian lessons every Wednesday. The cacio e pepe comes to your table in the cheese bowl and you get to see it all mixed up and served onto your plate. The gelato is legit. Please don't miss out on this place, people! read more

Probably one of the best happy hour deals right down town. $5 for selected pizzas, $5 appetizers and various drink deals. I recommend grabbing a craft of the sangria to share and splitting some food items amongst friends. This is also the place to get cacio e pepe (the pasta the twist in cheese right in front of you). The staff is extremely nice to the customers as they create a personal, fun experience for guests. Food tastes like authentic Italian. Plus, you can't beat the prices at happy hour! read more

Calling all Italophiles, this restaurant is the real deal. Having travelled recently in Italy, I miss the tastes, sights, service and pace of La Dolce Vita, especially after a long work week. With the crew in from corporate for MotoGP, I seized the opportunity to combine work with pleasure and booked a dinner with the owner, Marco, for staff and clients. He and Numero 28 team did not disappoint. Their warm attention to detail provides an authentic Italian experience, as they carefully attend to the needs of each guest, suggesting just the right wine or liqueur with each dish, perfectly paced for lingering over a meal all evening or grabbing a bite before heading to ACL. Here you will find a divine combination of traditional home dishes, street food and more labor-intensive, pastas, flatbreads and main courses. Numero 28 is an understated gem amidst the see-be-seen of the 2nd Street District. Do not let its modest appearance and lack of pretension fool you. And do not miss out on the dolci: sensing our satiation, our bartender, the divine Ms. AJ, concocted a diminutive version of the restaurant's well known umpteen-ingredient espresso martini to be sipped alternatively with bites of house-made gelato. These amicos have been around for 5 years and I am just patronizing them now! Shame on me! While seeking a downtown west side spot for an early dinner I noticed that a fellow Yelper who has never steered me wrong dined here in February and left a glowing review. So when the Temp is hitting 106 degrees is there a better time for a couple of glasses of wine and steaming plates of pasta? Heck no! Keep in mind the food is king here. This venue reminds me of the small family-owned Italian restaurants that you could find on the side streets in the North End of Boston. We started our adventure with a plate of veal meatballs. I almost teared up on my first bite as the taste brought me back to my childhood and my nonna's homemade meatballs. The gravy that accompanied them was perfectly chunky and we cleaned the plate using their delicious bread to ensure none of that red goodness was left behind. I had my eye on the Bucatini All'Amatriciana but who knew there is a pork cheek shortage so I had to go with option B their ribbon pasta with a meat sauce. Plus one opted for the chicken Parm with spaghetti. The pasta here is homemade and light as a feather. The chicken Parm was one of the best I've tasted since my last trip up north. Bernardo and his crew are just killing it with their simple Italian dishes. There are a number of dishes that I need to go back and try so N28 is going right to the top of my go-to for simple (peasant) Italian fare. Seating is limited so reservations are key. There is a patio but it's not the right season to be dining outside. There is a full bar with some interesting wine choices as well as specialty drinks and happy hour specials. We ordered some pizza and a charcuterie. We came here with a group of 13 and sat immediately on a Thursday at 5:30. The tables started getting more packed later. The pizzas are solid but if I came back here, I would make sure to get the cheese wheel pasta. The charcuterie was really good but would be better with some crackers or something like that. read more

Be careful sitting at the bar, at any moment in time, a small turtle like lady with lobster claws for hands may grab you from behind when you are not expecting it. She will ask you not to touch your hair, and you will feel violated. Her reasoning was that it's unacceptable to touch, or fix your hair inside a restaurant. This was an employee. Do not order the toilet water Negroni, unless you want to feel a deep state of regret. There are indeed 27 places in this city I would rather eat pizza before I came back here, Which means this place is indeed numero 28! read more

We decided to go to Numero 28 for my mother's birthday, The first server we had was a bit grumpy and wouldn't listen to us, but the second server was great! He was nice, and attentive and even sang along with my family. The food was also delicious, I'd recommend the pesto gnocchi, the little sun-dried tomatoes in that pasta were to die for. Pretty solid Italian food but my bar is set pretty high in regards to Italian. Best thing I had was the Prosciutto and Mozzarella appetizer (not pictured). The prosciutto was delicious, you can tell it's the real deal and aged a bit. Other that that, the gnocchi itself was obviously handmade and great but the pesto sauce was very creamy and kind of weird. Still yummy but not what I was expecting at all. The pizza was good but pretty standard as far as wood fired pizzas go. I'd come back to try more but wouldn't be my first option as far as Italian in Austin goes. read more

I had dinner at Numero28 before a concert at ACL Moody Theater. I sat at the bar, since I was dining alone. The bartender was super friendly and helpful in making suggestions. I started with a Negroni and the Prosciutto di Parma con Mozzarella. Both were outstanding. They brought bread out to go with the appetizer. I had Pinot Grigio with my main course. I went with the Cacio E Pepe for dinner, a house favorite. They serve it out of a parmesan drum. It was very tasty and entertaining to receive. The bartender poured me a bit more wine, since my pasta was a little delayed in coming out. This place has a wonderful and authentic atmosphere. I really enjoyed my meal and would definitely return to try something new. read more

We loved the food and service! As an Italian student of 2 years I was delighted to find out our server was actually Italian. I can't remember his name but he had great energy and is from Bologna. We ate Olive Marinate, Arancina Tradizionale, Gnocchi, Mortadella, Lasagna alla Bolognese, plus two glasses of red wine and a Spritz. The atmosphere was pretty great too! Again, I was happy to see that the place is actually run by Italians. I had heard that real Italian food is simple yet sophisticated and that was absolutely my experience. If you're looking for extra salty, American type food, go elsewhere. If you're craving true Italian food, give them a shot. Overall the restaurant is decent, but I wouldn't say it stands out among other Italian restaurants. Therefore, I don't think its extremely worth the price. Calamari - 7/10 - I enjoyed it, but it's pretty standard. Pappardelle - 7/10 - I liked it but I feel the same about it as I do the calamari. It's a pretty regular pappardelle bolognese. Lured in by photos and videos of their cacio e pepe that's served from a wheel of Parmesan, and it is a sight to behold. Service is where they stand out. Very accommodating and genuinely happy you're there. Parking in the area can make this a tricky destination but if you're already in/around 2nd St District, then I recommend swinging by for a bite and a beverage. Definitely get the cacio e pepe for the table because of the novelty but get something else, too, as the cacio e pepe is delish, but prob not the best thing on the menu. read more

I gave this restaurant a second chance. The first time they messed up my order and I didn't notice until I got home so I ate half and threw the other half in the trash. I went in again today right when they opened at 4:30 PM and they were definitely not ready to be open. The cook was not even there yet, so they said I could order a pizza but that was it. I don't eat much bread so that was not an option. I waited for the cook to show up and ordered a soup, meatballs. It took 30 minutes to get my order! The guy who came in after me was served 10 minutes before me. We were the only two in there. I came in contact with about four different employees and each one of them was very lackadaisical. I sat at the bar and the bartender didnt acknowledged me until I asked for some water. Then never asked me anything after that. They all seemed very unprofessional. Talking to each other loudly, complaining, joking around instead, etc.. instead of servicing customers. Bummer. read more

Cute little Italian restaurant downtown. It's very charming and they have a nice patio outside! Good location, and I believe it's family-run. The food is very authentic and tasty! I tried the veal meatballs, calamari, Caesar salad, and spinach and ricotta ravioli. The only thing I wouldn't order again is the caesar, it was very average. We had just returned from Italy and were on the hunt for traditional Roman pasta. We'd heard that Numero 28 was the place to go so we tried it out. Saturday night was a bit busy and we didn't have a reservation so we had to wait about an hour for a table. There are plenty of places to pop in for a cocktail in the area so the hour flew by! Now, down to business, the food. The big winner of the meal was the cacio e pepe. It was prepared tableside in a giant wheel of Parmesan; it doesn't get any better than that!!! The gnocchi was solid and the pizza was on point with the signature Roman chewy crust. I was most looking forward to the Bucatini Allamatriciana as that is not something I'd ever remembered seeing on a menu outside of Italy. It was good but not quite as traditional as I'd hoped. To be fair, not sure anything could really hold up to what we had in Rome. It was really good, just a bit different. All in all I definitely recommend Numero 28 for delicious Italian food in Austin. Food: 9/10 Service: 6/10 Parking: 5/10 (street parking is best, garages are expensive and they don't validate) A friend recommended me to try Numero28 and decided to stop by on a Sunday night. We got there around 6:30PM and was seated right away for a party of two. The restaurant is SMALL so big parties may have a much longer wait time. If you're looking for a romantic, easy dining experience, I would NOT recommend this place, only because they move so so so fast. I've never felt so rushed to eat a meal before and that kind of muddied how great the food tasted tbh. We sat down and were served our appts and entrees within 10 minutes after ordering. Our servers kept hovering around our table to see if our plates were done and wouldn't ask to take the plates before they did. I felt like I was constantly being watched and it was a little nerve-racking. If that's how a normal Italian restaurant is, then a 10/10! The moments when I did have a chance to breathe and enjoy my meal, the food was FANTASTIC! The noodles were so flavorful in the bolognese, the veal meatball appts were the best things I've ever had, and the pistachio ice cream was unreal!!!! Showed up post entree and not really much to write home about. They forgot the olive oil drizzle. Very good portion size but if it's not tasty no real point to it. Austin pizza was good not great. Great food! They even have an authentic Italian bar tender who is adorable. We ordered two appetizers, and three entrees. Also a couple of drinks, it was all good especially the pasta in the cheese wheel which is definitely original. Two things to watch for, one the wait...you can't make reservations here, so you wait...; two, the host is an unfriendly seemingly angry guy so beware. The place inside is very small, so if you are like me and hate the high tables, you will wait some more. For me, this is a one time experience, our bill was over two hundred dollars for 3 people so it isn't cheap. I expect a little better for that price range. read more

I didn't think Austin could pull off truly authentic pizza. I was dead wrong. Baldinucci is absolute sorcery. The moment I took a bite of their Roman-style pizza, I was instantly thrown back to the tiny, narrow pizzerias I stumbled into in Italy. It has that exact, hyper-specific airy crunch that is so incredibly hard to replicate outside of Europe. The dough is clearly fermented with patience. It's light, shatteringly crisp on the bottom, and has those beautiful, irregular air pockets that give it a pillowy structure without ever feeling heavy. Let's talk about the sauce, because that's where most places fail. It isn't that sugary, paste-heavy stuff you find at standard joints. It is vibrant, bright, and tastes intensely of sun-ripened tomatoes and clean olive oil. It is remarkably fresco; striking that perfect balance where the acidity cuts through the richness of the cheese without overwhelming the palate. The vibe inside the West Lake spot is casual and unpretentious, but they take their craft seriously. Food service is streamlined and efficient; you order at the counter, and they pop the slices back into the oven so they land at your table screaming hot. The staff is genuinely proud of what they're slinging, and they should be. If you are an East Coast transplant drowning in a sea of mediocre pies, do yourself a favor and get over to West Lake. It's the real deal. PS: The gelato flavors are also sorcery. However, a review of their gelato is for another time. I must continue to savor the pie for now.

I love me some Numero 28. Sometimes we refer to it in the office as Numero 29, but that would mean something was 1 better than Numero 28, which just isn't the case. The meatballs are delicious and all of their pizzas are very good. The spinach salad with beets is super delicious. I try to get it every time I go in to make myself feel like I am making healthy choices. Spinach salad with lasagna sounds healthy to me! Start off with some prosciutto as it is always delicious. I find their mozzarella very boring, so I usually skip it. Also skip the gelato, not sure if it sits out for too long, but there is something off about it. Even my 14yr old didn't love it. I would much rather have a plate of meatballs vs. the gelato. I could eat the aracina and meatballs every day. The beef carpaccio is very tasty. If you're looking for fancier Italian food head to Italic, but if you want good old fashioned Italian comfort food at a reasonable price Numero 28 is the place to be. read more

**Review of Numero 28** Tonight we dined at Numero 28 in Austin, TX, and had a mixed experience. The food was decent but not particularly memorable. We ordered a variety of dishes including Arancina Vegetariana, Cacio e Pepe, Eggplant Parmigiana, Gnocchi Pesto, and a Margherita Pizza. The flavors were satisfactory but nothing stood out as exceptional. What did stand out, however, was the cost of the drinks. We were charged $40 for a combination of 3 Diet Cokes, 2 Iced Teas, and 5 regular Cokes. This seemed quite excessive for what were just standard soft drinks. Turns out refills are full price. Additionally, a server poured us ice waters that had black floating chunks in them, which was quite off-putting. We set the waters to the side of the table. While the service was acceptable, the overall value for money left something to be desired. Given the steep drink prices and the issue with the water, I'm not sure I'd return unless I was sticking strictly to the food menu. read more

What an amazing place!!! If you go to this restaurant, YOU MUST GET PIZZA!!! I sat at the bar and had normal service. The staff was very nice and were always making sure we had everything we needed. The restaurant isn't huge, but it's very nice. They have patio seating, bar seating, and seats on the inside. Sweet place, chill vibes. FOOD- WOW. The pizza was AMAZING!!! I ordered a margarita pizza and the Lasagna Bolognese. The Lasagna wasn't good, but the pizza made up for it. The sauce they used tasted so fresh! It was so delicious. The best pizza in town! Amazing pasta selection! The service is outstanding! They have vino on tap! We normally start with the carpaccio then on to some pasta or pizza! I personally love the canelloni. The sauce is delicious! As for pizza, the patate pizza which is potatoes, gorgonzola, mushrooms and oregano is a must try! Every pizza on the menu is great but it is my personal favorite. Don't leave without trying the cannoli or gelato. You'll definitely not regret visiting this place! I ordered the margarita pizza and minestrone soup to go from Numero 28, and both were delicious! The soup was hearty and flavorful, perfect for a comforting meal. The pizza didn't taste like your traditional margarita pizza, but it had its own unique twist that I really enjoyed. Even as takeout, everything was fresh and tasted amazing when I got home. Nothing is better than a good, true, Italian pizza. And this place has just that. I've had way too many pizzas in Italy and I can tell you that Número 28's pizza tasted just like Italy's! I was SO impressed. We also ordered a lasagna that was ok...pizza is definitely their speciality though. I'll definitely keep coming for the pizza!! In my opinion, it was way better than any "American" pizza like the ever popular Homeslice. 10/10 would recommend to a friend. :) read more

What a fantastic new restaurant! I was there recently with a group and had such a wonderful experience! Marco took such great care of us. Instead of ordering, we put our meal in Marco's hands and he brought us most of the dishes on the menu for us to share. They were all so delicious! I'm sorry but these guys have dropped off from where they used to be. They had the place next door as well and it seemed to be a partner that made delicious fresh pasta dishes but this has now dwindled down to lackluster pasta and all dishes. However, the prosciutto pizza was absolutely delicious! It's easily become one of my favorite spots for pizza in Austin. It is obvious if you come here and watch and listen to the staff. This is a restaurant that screams "family" - clearly the people love what they do, and it shows in their service and in their food.
