This is about as close as you're going to get to a "hole in the wall" Italian food spot in downtown Austin. The food here is wonderful ranging from the pastas (none of which you can go wrong with), to the Eggplant Parmesan, to even the pizzas. The space itself inside is very small and cozy. The service is also great too. The one thing that is only fair to mention now that we are in the summer months is that the inside gets very hot as if there is no air conditioning. So if you are looking to be in a very cool place on a hot sunny day, this place might not be your spot. The staff and food were top notch during my first visit to N28! Genuine Italian family-owned, accompanied with excellent wine and menu suggestions based on what we like. A table of four- we split a large pizza (~$30) and bottle of Chianti (~$35). The pizza was able to be split into three different "types," so we were able to enjoy different house specialties. We did 1/3 margherita (mozzarella, tomato, and basil), 1/3 diavola (spicy salami, mozzarella), and 1/3 capricciosa (artichokes, mushrooms, green olives, and ham). Food was really good, but we had a terrible experience with our server and.wait times. He (never knew his name bc he didn't mind introducing himself) kept forgetting us and what we asked for. It was an extremely hot humid afternoon and we were seated outside although there seemed to be room inside the establishment. we were the only ones outside and waited long after we sat just to get water, around 15 min for our waiter to be back to take our order, another 15 min just to get a draft beer- which we could clearly see from where we were that the bar tender served it quickly, but the beer was sitting on the bar while our waiter was sitting inside in the cool on his cell phone until we waived at him repeatedly and asked again for the beer. We had to ask for napkins and utensils, had to ask twice for water and things, and after he served our food we could not find our waiter anymore. After finishing our meal, we waited another 15-20 min or so until someone else came outside to ask for our check and pay. We ordered the cacio e pepe pasta, the arancina and pizza Diavola. Everything tasted really good, 4 to the food, but it was just the overall experience + poor service + long wait times which kind of ruined it for us. read more

Great food, great atmosphere, but get there early because it gets busy. And on that note, be prepared to be pushed out the door if you feel like taking your time. We recently moved across the street and have been enjoying the incredible smells of Italy every time we pass by this busy spot so finally stopped to eat. We were greeted at the door by the very friendly host. There was a short wait so we sat on the sidewalk while the manager took our drink order. Once inside this lively neighborhood feeling trattoria we had arancini (appeared to have edamame inside instead of traditional peas but tasted great), olives, and a pizza for appetizers. All excellent! The pizza crust was light and just the right crunch. The cacio e pepe is served from a Parmigiano cheese round and is very tasty...just like in Roma! Ravioli were served in the pan like we used to get in the North End of Boston. This seems like a family run place and all the friendly staff are or speak Italian. Hard to find that in Austin! Our only issue was the temperature inside at our table was quite warm. Could've used some A/C. Can't wait to go back to try more of the menu and wish we had stopped in sooner. read more

I so wanted to love this restaurant, as I had seen so many ads for it that literally made my mouth water. However, it didn't fully live up to the hype. The cacio e pepe is a showstopper as far as presentation goes - they create the final product for you right there in front of you in a cheese wheel, however I just didn't find the flavor very good. The cheese wasn't as I expected it would be. In addition, the wine and calamari just weren't impressive either. For the price, I just didn't think this Italian joint was worth it. Talked to waitress privately to coordinate birthday cake surprise. 3:10, waitress informs us she doesn't want us to be surprised, she's asked us to put our order since the kitchen closes at 3:30pm. ??? They had several touch points to let us know & didn't, no mention of the kitchen closing on their website, or even a mention from the manager in person or via email. Came here with family and enjoyed a lovely Italian meal. Ordered veg- aranicina for starters, very flavorful and perfectly crisped and not overly cheesy. For main we did veg Capricciosa pizza & eggplant parmigiana. Again not overly cheesy but perfectly spiced and flavored. This was a flatbread pizza and the crust was perfectly charted. For the pizza we requested to replace ham with jalapeño and our waitress was super kind to oblige. Eggplant parmigiana was good too - it wasn't super hot (temperature wise) or cheese overloaded and the marinara sauce definitely added more flavor. For drinks we did house wine - this was okay not my favorite- little too earthy and dry for my palate . Overall a very good meal and experience, the only thing that fell short was that our starter came out after we were almost finished with our main and had to remind our waitress about it. read more

I think the food was decent, my boyfriends chicken parmigiana was over cooked and my plate was not the warmest by the time it arrived. It was a pretty busy day being Valentine's Day so I think maybe staff was overwhelmed. I made a reservation for outdoor seating keeping in mind that we are in the middle of a pandemic. The outdoor seating area was extremely crowded with another open table within 2 feet of ours which made me uncomfortable. I'm surprised I haven't left a review for this place yet, but I moved to Austin in early 2015 and have been going sporadically ever since. I would eat there way more often if I lived or worked downtown. As an Italophile, the first time I went there was for an AS Roma soccer fan club group to meet ppl from Rome/. The very attentive managers are Italian and so are many of the cooks, waitstaff and host staff. If not from Italy, some staff are UT students who study Italian/studied abroad in Italy & speak the language at least proficiently. It's very authentic from the front of the house to the back of the house, which is a rarity, even in New York City...Since my first time there, they've kept all my favorite menu items like the beef carpaccio, and added pastas, which was something I'd been wanting. if you luck out timing-wise and catch hazelnut ice cream in season, I recommend it. U can sample anyhow. Dining there tonight and noticed they've added several nonalcoholic drinks, which I'm looking forward to trying. I should ask them if they'll add Chinotto to the drink menu, but nobody likes it in the USA besides me; it's like a bitter non-alcoholic alternative to Campari. I believe the last time I ate there, they accommodated my off-menu request for a simple spaghetti al pomodoro with basil. Hopefully the same applies tonight because my stomach has been sensitive lately. Besides the authentic food and thoroughly authentically Italian staff, I also recommend the bruschetta trio, the Arancini and the fra diavolo pizza, to name a few. Grab a good espresso, too! I assume they have decaf for people dining later. If I have anything to add after tonight, I'll post it, but the only addition would probably be pictures of what I order. I've never taken pictures of my food, so I'll make a point to do that as I'm a visual person myself. I'm happy for them that they open to Houston location and survived and thrived through Covid. If you are an AS Roma soccer fan, you can also watch live games there, although the time zone difference can be tricky & the head of the fan club moved kinda far from ATX. Like apathetic hungry zombies, we began wandering aimlessly looking for a bite to eat on that side of town one evening. It went a little something like this: Him "you want Mexican?" Me "nahhh." Him, gesturing across the street "okay. Well, do you want BBQ?" Me, contemplating at a crosswalk "nah, I don't want to break out into meat sweats tonight. It's too hot outside." Collectively, we continued to dismiss and excuse a multitude of West Second Street options. Hungry and apathetic is one of the worst combinations. Two blocks later, after window shopping at Urban Outfitters, strolling past ACL Moody's upcoming show posters and Violet Crown's latest indie releases, we began to approach the end of the street. We were essentially out of options. Until the red and yellow sign yelled from up above, "Hey - up here! Look at me. I'm cozy and yummy." We obliged. Admittedly, we'd never noticed this spot. Ever. And we've spent a lot of time on West Second St. Apparently Numero28 exists in several locations in New York City, Miami, London and Austin. Our darling, authentically Italian server was quick to educate us on the history, menu and pronunciations. the menu boasts the expected collection of Italian epicuriocities such as pizzas, mistas, carpaccios, cured meats and cheese and pastas. The unexpected part, though, was how tasty the pizza was. I accept the challenge to devour anything spicy, so we opted for the Diavola. It was the perfect sharable. Red sauce base, mozzarella cheese and spicy salami. I sweet talked our server into some basil, too. The wine is served in three different options - glass, carafe and by the bottle. I also accept the challenge to throw back some vino, so I guarded a the carafe on my own. The guy got his own so we could taste both. Its also great if you're indecisive between two bottles. Speaking of wine, I lack wine snobbery, so perhaps they're not FABULOUS bottle offerings, but they certainly are reasonably priced. To no fault of the restaurant, there was a cackling group of over-wined early 20-somethings who made the experience a little less enjoyable throughout our visit. Its a small restaurant and the group took up over half of the space, so escaping wasn't an option unless it meant ending our night early. Delicious panini here - they bake the bread using their pizza oven. Considering how good the bread was, I have no doubt that the pizza would also be tasty here as well. I had the panino porchetta ($11), the classic Italian version of pork belly. The porchetta I've had before were usually roasted and seasoned with rosemary, among other Italian spices, but here, they were literally fried pork bellies - quite different from what I was expected, but still tasty, if not a bit heavy. I also ordered the arancina vegetariana - and comparing with other arancini, this one was one large ball that could fit an entire bowl (which is why this was plated instead). It was tasty and well-made, although personally I like my arancini without tomato sauce - but that's just me (Italians would scoff at me for this lol). This appetizer is big enough for sharing (and is priced for more than one person, at $10). Another table's lasagna looked well-prepared, with not so much tomato sauce, which is how I like it. I am tempted to come back for that, and to try other things in the menu. This place is undergoing expansion, to include greater offerings of antipasti, I believe. I'm glad this notable international chain made it out to Austin. I pictured it with pieces of veal and stretchy mozzarella cheese and all it was was ground veal look like chili in an enchilada shell. I felt bad because they close at 2:15pm and we came around 1:50pm but they were more than happy to serve us. We started off with the "frittura di calamari e zucchine" (fried calamari and zucchini) and the "arancina tradizionale" (saffron rice ball) per the recommendation of the staff and we were not disappointed. Both appetizers were great. Shared the 18-inch "Austin" pizza with the bro and LOVED that they used fresh jalapeños. Is it the best pizza I've ever had? No. But it was better than average and definitely enjoyable. Ziti alla "Norma" was also solid - perfect lunch portion too. I've been really into Spanish guitar lately cuz it's got me feeling some type of way so when I heard it here I was pleasantly surprised. It upped my opinion of this place.
