I first stumbled onto Nyc Ink by accident, but I'm so glad that I did. I've gotten two piercings at NYC Ink now and both instances have been great experiences. 6 months ago I walked in a little bit tipsy looking for who knows what, and eventually settling on a cartilage piercing. Sam was very professional, funny, and good-natured and gave me lots of helpful tips as a first timer. Yes, it's a little bit expensive, but I appreciated the expertise at every step, from the jewelry selection (he wouldn't let me buy a hoop as he said it wouldn't heal properly), to the placement which was perfect, to the aftercare. I also really appreciated the 2-week follow-up for him to make sure everything was healing okay. He also is a piercing purist and uses what others tell me is a very long needle for precision--no Claire's style piercing guns here. This past weekend I came in looking for a second one. Once again, he was very patient on my waffling over placement and eventually I bit the bullet. After the swelling had gone down and sitting with it for a couple of days, I realized I hadn't accounted enough for the earring shape and the two were too close together. Back to the shop--Sam was very helpful in discussing alternative solutions beyond a re-piercing so at least I could potentially get some additional jewelry rather than simply pay for the re-piercing. I also considered keeping the two and getting a third, but he didn't think it would look right--and I appreciated the honesty rather than having him sell me jewelry + piercing. After considering some other very nice workarounds--albeit, not right for my stubborn self--he declared, "OK, now I know what you want, I read your mind. We'll re-pierce!" He then placed the earring in the exact perfect spot I had initially envisioned, and didn't charge me anything additional in the end! What's more, this whole process of switching earrings in and out and getting the new piercing was pretty painful on my end, and I appreciated his bedside manner. He also has a genuine concern for piercings that seem at-risk for infection and reminded me to come back in a week. I got both ears with cartilage done and my friend got a tattoo. They give a free earring with a tattoo but it was still pricey- $130, would have been $180, but totally worth it. (Price is legit the only reason these guys don't have 5 stars) Sam chatted with me the entire time he did my piercings (bc I never got cartilage and was worried about the pain). He gave me the ear cleaning fluid and explained everything. He was delightful! Didn't get the tattoo artists name but he chatted with me and my friend the entire time (about an hour) while he worked and was super chill. Really steady hands. They're honest about your tattoos (telling you what size would be best/what areas hurt most from experience) and explained the cleaning process multiple times for us. Super friendly! My favorite thing abt the tattoo artist is he made it a point to show my friend his brand new-unopened needle. 10/10 would recommend. I'll be going back! read more

Went in today and had my right helix pierced, while my friend got a triple helix piercing. Both were done by Rob. He was so nice and easy going! He helped us as soon as we walked in and made the process of paperwork and picking out jewelery very easy. Pricing wasn't too bad either! We went back to the piercing room and as I sat down, he asked me how I was doing, if I was ready for the piercings, and just tried to put me at ease as much as he could. I watched him sterilize everything he used for me as well as my friend. I would definitely go back for any piercings or even tattoos I plan to get in the future! I stopped by NYC Ink today after reviewing the best places for piercings in Manhattan. The reviews about this location were all positive, especially about Sam and I felt confident trusting him to pierce my nose. I arrived at the shop at about 1pm, it was empty and Sam was painting the walls. He apologized profusely about not being ready, but cleaned up in a few minutes and was attentive to me and conversing the whole time. Sam was wonderful and added to my experience. He also made sure to great other customers who entered the shop while still focusing his time on me. The materials used were sterile and clean and Sam was very patient with me, for I was indecisive in picking where on my nose I wanted the piercing. The piercing process was smooth and easy, and Sam made sure to let me know how to care for my new piercing. He also made a point to explain that he will take care of me for no charge until the piercing heals, and that I need to come back in 2 weeks for a check up- which I definitely will do. My experience at NYC ink was stellar. The reason that I give them 3 stars is because of the pricing. I had a Groupon for the piercing which brought it from $50 to $24. However, there is also a free earring with any piercing that is offered if you check in on Yelp. I asked Sam if I could combine these (I am a broke college student) and he said no and said that they are of the same value and it doesn't matter which one I use. I opted for the groupon, since I already had it loaded. So, I paid $24 for the piercing, $60 for the earring, and $10 for the cleaning solution- a total of $103 with tax. After leaving the establishment I realized that this price was very steep, and that if I used the yelp check in for the free earring I would have only paid $59 (plus tax). I am not happy about this price jump and feel as if I was uninformed and charged more than I should have been. Be careful with the "deals" here. Please, Sam, help me understand or fix this pricing dilemma because you are wonderful, I love my new piercing, and I want to give you 5 stars and return for tattoos and piercings in the future. I just simply can't afford to lose almost $50. read more

Sam pierced my sisters and I! He was great and very patient! We got 4 piercings in total. He really cares about the care and quality of your piercing. We were freaking out because we always got pierced with guns, he taught us that, that's damaging to the ears and we ended up getting different parts (cartilage, lobe, tragus) of the ear pierced with a needle. HE IS QUICK AND THE PAIN IS MINIMAL! Definitely going back and I'm highly recommending him! He told us to come back in 10 days so he can clean the piercing and make sure it's healing well (come on now...how many of us know piercers that actually do aftercare?) He's great! read more

I can't recommend this place enough. I walked in (without an appt) and they were able to get me in within an hour. The owner listened to all the design ideas I wanted and worked with me on size and placement (all while greeting a 7yr old that came in for her first ear piercing). When I returned later for the actual tattoo, the artist was very friendly and understanding (as this was my first tat). He worked and reworked the placement, redoing the stencil 3 times until it worked just right. The artist was very skilled and did an amazing job with tiny details (going as far as to ask if the violin had a realistic feel since I've been playing for many years). Came here a while back with my sister. We both spent a lot of time asking questions and changing our minds about the designs we wanted. I'm also awful with pain and I was terrified about getting the tattoo. The guy up front, who I'm now assuming is Sam based on other reviews, was extremely patient and honest with us about what designs would work where, and setting expectations for color saturation and retouching. My artist was Elvio and he was the sweetest person ever. He didn't make me feel stupid for being scared, and he was very gentle and reassuring. My tattoo came out great and I absolutely love it! I forgot the name of my sister's artist but she was a female and she worked very quickly and the tattoo is beautiful. She also retouched a tattoo my sister had received elsewhere and it looks so much better now! I will be coming back here for any more tattoos or piercings for sure! read more

My review is only for the piercing side of things. My fourth lobe piercings is stretched to an 8g and normally I wear tunnels with rubber rings. Somehow I managed to lose one of the rings and all my spares were in storage until I could retrieve them which was going to be in 3-4 days, obviously I didn't want my tunnel to fall out during that time so I needed replacements. NYC Ink had pretty good Yelp reviews and was on my way home and open after my late shift (I went in around midnight on a saturday) because I had an early shift the next day. I called the shop on my break to see if they had any rings I could buy in 8g and the person on the phone said he wasn't sure, but probably. So I went after my shift. When I got there the piercer was standing outside talking to someone else and seemed annoyed that he had to go in and help me. I asked about there rings again, explains that I had called earlier. He pulled one out that had to have been at LEAST 0g or 00g, but it was probably bigger. It was almost laughable how wrong the size was, which as a little concerning that the piercer didn't know sizing. Anyway, determined not to have gone all the way here and not have my problem fixed I showed him my earring and asked what he might suggest. He said they sold double flare tunnels that would fit my piercing and he could put on in for me. Great. Then he told me I should really be wearing double flares anyway and that they don't like dealing with the rings. Okay, not necessary but okay. He then said he'd put the double flare 8g in. This concerned me, because obviously with the double flare, the flare is a size up from the tube on the jewelry and I didn't want to blow out my piecing because the stretch to an 8 was still fairly new. I said I'd rather a 10g double flare because I didn't mind having to stretch back up since this was only a temporary fix. He INSISTED that i go with the 8g and that it wouldn't blow it out. Fine, whatever, you're the professional. So we go in the back to put it in. The room is tiny tiny tiny, barely any room for him to move around. When he initially tried to put the jewelry in it pinched and hurt so he went to get a taper. I will acknowledge that because it's my fourth lobe piercing, the area is a little thicker but the tunnel was plenty long enough. It probably took 15 minutes of pushing and trying different tapers and techniques to get the jewelry in. By this point my ear is sore, I can feel it swelling and then the piercer says "don't move, I don't want to get blood on your shirt." BLOOD!? WHY is there blood? There is never supposed to be blood when stretching!!!! You've got to be kidding me. It bled for at least another 2 minutes while he held gauze or whatever to my ear. So now my ear is throbbing and sore like I've just gotten it pierced UGH. Whatever, I paid for my tunnel and I left. When I got home I found that there was crusted blood all over my ear and the jewelry, so it had obviously kept bleeding and I was just so mad. I was really afraid that the whole thing was blown out, but later when I went back to my tunnel/ring combo jewelry it seemed to be alright, I think it was maybe a tear as opposed to a blowout, but still NOT OKAY. And it pinched a lot getting the double flared jewelry out. For reference, I have 20+ piercings and 5 tattoos, I'm not stupid when it comes to body mods, and I should have known better than to let someone who was unfamiliar with my mods talk me into something I knew I didn't want. I really wish I'd made him use a 10g piece instead or taken my jewelry out and let it size down until I could get my rings...but live and learn I guess. Bottom Line: I would not ever come back. If that's how the piercer is, I certainly don't want ink from here. Hopefully I just have a fluke experience, but I won't try again. EDIT: I would like to add that the piercer contacted me privately here after the fact to try and tell me blood when stretching an ear is normal. That is just absolutely not true, blood is only normal if the stretch is done before the piercing is ready. Stretching should not result in pain or blood, which I think they know at NYC Ink otherwise they would have replied publicly. They did offer me new jewelry if I came back in, but I just did not feel comfortable doing so after my first experience. read more

Such a great place! I have 9 piercings, all from different places, but I think I've found my piercing home, because I can't see myself going anywhere else! I came in as a walk-in today, and was filling out paperwork within 5 minutes, and was out the door in 15. I got a nose piercing, which I was nervous about because I think poorly placed nose piercings are an unforgivable sin. Sam was really cool about me being picky with my placement, and pierced me super quick before I could even start getting nervous. It was pretty much painless! I got titanium jewelry and my total came to $104. Sam is seriously one of the coolest piercers I've been to, and everyone else working seemed like they had the same chill vibe. I came across NYC Ink on Groupon and purchased a voucher to use at the shop. Of course, before I got the groupon, I looked at the reviews of NYC Ink and there was only positive ratings. I usually just go to random stores that are close to my neighborhood to get gun piercings, but since I wanted to get my tragus pierced, I figured why not do it at a more professional place. Thank goodness I did it at NYC Ink with Sam. He is such a friendly, professional, and patience person. You should listen to him when he says to come back within 10days-2weeks after the piercing though. I regretted it.. After my piercing, I listened to Sam and strayed my ears with sea salt spray every day, but I did not go back for a check up after 10 days like he told me to. I was caught up in my schedule and even though I got a bump on my tragus, I just told myself that it would go away if I used the spray more often and tried other remedies from the internet, but to no avail. I finally hauled myself back to the shop and it was Sam who helped me clean the infection and the bump went away. Sam told me to come back again within 10 days so he can follow up with my on the piercing, but of course.. I did not end up coming up. Eventually, the bump came back again and my tragus was infected. This time, I read that sometimes the bump will go away itself. It never did for me and I waited a couple of months (about 3-4) before going back to NYC Ink. Yes, I got a little lecture from Sam, but that's cause he genuinely cares about his customers and really tries to help. In that one check, he got rid of the whole infection and even adjusted my hole so that he could clean my piercing thoroughly. It did hurt, but that's my fault for letting the infection get bigger and not doing anything about. He even gave me a lollipop and was encouraging me through the whole cleaning lol. After this, my bump was completely invisible. Sam definitely knows what he's doing as he's been doing this for a long time. I made sure to come back within 10 days this time. Although it was a little infected again when I came back (not as much as the last time). There was barely a bump. I felt bad because I kept getting my ear infected (I probably sleep on it too much or my headphones or my hair gets caught in my piercing) and coming back so I wanted to tip Sam. He kindly rejected my tip and said that I already paid for the piercing (even though this was 6 months ago) and so the healing process is a part of it. Once again, he told me to come back in 2 weeks after this visit for another check up and that I did. Make sure to listen when Sam tells you to come back for a check up whether you think you have an infection or not and don't wait. Get it done ASAP before it grows more painful later on. Overall, I had the BEST experience here at NYC Ink and Sam is such a caring owner (funny too). I've only had pleasant experiences with him and his store. I was chilling with a couple of friends on Friday night and had the most spontaneous thought of getting a helix piercing. I've previously read good reviews about NYC INK so I decided to just go for it. Because it was an impromptu decision I didn't do much research on helix piercing before going. However the owner Sam is very friendly and helpful, he answered every question and was very patient when explaining things to me and one of my friends who wants to get her nose pierced. After getting the piercing, Sam told me to come back in about 10 days for a check up to make sure it's healing good. Solid. I lost one of the balls on my industrial jewellery (har har ok get it out of your system now, folks, there's a lot more coming), so I removed the jewellery and planned to put it back in once I bought a replacement ball. Three weeks passed. I finally tried to get the jewellery back in. Surprise surprise, I couldn't get the bar back through the holes. What to do? Unsurprisingly, there are no piercing places to be found in Princeton. I made a trip into the city and pinged this place via Yelp (thank you dear Yelp fam for being so clutch). Not going to lie -- I was totally freaked out upon locating it. I saw the tiny location, the neon lettering signs, the walls lined with smoking gear... and thought I was definitely in the wrong place. Nope. They just multitask. I was a little concerned (since you definitely shouldn't mix the two activities simultaneously), but I sucked it up and asked them to help me with my industrial anyway. I got exactly what I asked for -- the man working there was helpful, efficient, and professional. He got my jewellery back in with no problems and with a smile. Just to be sure, I asked what material their jewellery is made from and it's surgical steel, which is basically what you want to be putting through your body. Good on them for that -- you always want to make sure the jewellery is made out of something that is body safe. I also saw two girls get pierced before I was helped, and they both left looking happy! Overall, no complaints. (I do wish the location were a bit less grungy, or didn't have all the smoking/vaping stuff too, but those are mostly just details that would more firmly bump this place up into a seriously professional piercing studio. But as I said, it seems like their strategy is to multitask on their focuses, in which case I can't complain. Piercing portion was solid enough.) read more

Sam is the absolute BEST!! He is so nice, really cares about what he does, and is fantastic at it! I will never go anywhere else for my piercings! I had my nose pierced pierced by him almost ten years ago and my seconds maybe six years ago. I went to get my third, a double cartilage/helix, and my tragus done by him a month ago. Honestly I was so scared to get four piercings at once, but he did a great job! The place is very clean and he made it as painless as possible! He is great and has continued following up with me and checking my piercings every week to make sure all my piercings are healing well. My tragus got slightly infected and he completely cleaned it out for me and switched it to a bigger stick for free! The infection was gone within 36 hours! He truly cares about everyone he works on and he wants to make sure everyone is happy with what they got and healing well. Little pricey but SO worth it! read more

I really have nothing but the best things to say about this place. I've known Sam for a while and he's done all my piercings and tattoos since I've moved to the city five years ago. I've recommended him to all my friends and they've thanked me and have been loyal customers of this shop. The workers truly care about getting it right for you. They follow up to make sure everything has been clean and that you're satisfied. I've seen a bunch of shady shops in the area and they're pretty trashy and the customer service is awful -- to be extremely blunt. Everything here is super clean and sanitized. Sam will get it just right (depending on what you're looking for). The tattoo artists are talented and the real deal. For the quality you're getting, I'd say the pricing here is a steal. Point being: highly recommend. I work in a pretty conservative industry, and have always been really happy with the results and service here.
