A good little restaurant/bar. We arrived close to when the kitchen was closing but our waitress didn't rush us and the food arrived quickly. The fish and chips were quite good. Once the kitchen closed, the place seemed to take on more of a bar feel, the music changed, families quickly left and it seemed to attractive a younger crowd. This isn't bad, just something to note. This had a whole bunch of seating available including an outdoor patio. There was an outdoor bar and not too sure if there was one inside too. Regardless, the service was appreciated, and the food came out in a timely matter. The menu was typical bar food with a few twists I saw too. The Cajun chicken quesadilla ($12.50) was ordered as an appetizer. It contained blackened chicken, Cajun creole sauce, cheddar jack cheese, jalapeno peppers and peppers. I thought this was going to be a little spicier than it was. It was still good especially the sauce. I had the reuben ($12.99) as my entrée. I ordered it with a side of pasta salad, which was a tad too sweet. The reuben was solid especially the rye bread and the amount of toppings. My only issue was the thickness of corn beef, would have liked it a little thinner. I also tried the lobster salad roll, again great bread, and it was filled to capacity with lobster meat. Easily the trashiest spot in downtown Newport. The food is horrible as is the service. The bathrooms are always dirty and the overall place is rundown and gimmicky. It's often loud and over crowded and it's not uncommon to see the police in force outside to regulate the drunken crowd. read more

Downside: The place was full, 25+ minute wait, we were seated out on the porch, near the fence, which kids climbed from the outside. My brother and I ordered the Angus burgers cause they sounded so good I especially thought the cooking would be on point because they qualify the 'doneness' of the meat on the menu We both ordered Medium done I expected some redness. What I got was a well done burger with no red whatsoever So much so I was embarrassed I had recommended based on Yelp and suggested perhaps a Walmart Angus burger would have been a wiser choice I think they require more staff as well. Stopped in today on an overcast RI day while enjoying an instate vaca getaway for a few days. Opted to try their Beef Stew entree (for lunch-lol) since I felt the urge to warm up since the weather wasn't the best today. Definitely the right decision. Be sure to allow plenty of time to spend here. Plenty. The atmosphere is great, dogs are allowed, and the large outdoor patio is a nice spot on a warm day. There is a fountain for kids to splash in and play while they wait, which could be a godsend because you could be waiting a very, very long time for your food. We went for a late lunch on a sunny Monday afternoon that turned into a very, very late lunch as it took over an hour for our food to arrive. When you are already really hungry, an hour is just ridiculous. A further disappointment was no lobster on the menu, despite a lobster roll being highlighted as the #1 menu item. We were there in early April, with our server telling us it was the first day the patio was open, which accounted for the delay. However, plenty of other tables received their food and turned to a new group while we waited. Her check in came only after over a half hour of waiting, and at this point in the day it really wasn't that busy. The chowder, once it arrived, was good, but the burger and chicken BLT, not so much. The kid's burger ordered arrived as a full-size big burger covered in onions, which my daughter wouldn't eat, but there was no way we were returning anything after such a long wait. The waitress took it off the bill after we pointed out the charge. We were very glad to get out of there and regret not bailing out earlier. I'm really not sure who here is leaving bad reviews of this great place but they're definitely just not in the right mindset. We happened to come across O'Brien's while looking for a fun and lively place to eat with the entire family on the main road in Newport, Thames St. (and if that isn't the main street to you then go look at another review). We had the best time here! The drinks (from beer, wine and old standbys to Caribbean great ones like a Bahama Mama) were great, the atmosphere was fun. Everyone is welcomed, adults as well as kids who can go "fishing" in the center fountain, and anyone looking to watch a game in any of the TV's around the bar area, as well as your (friendly) dog if you'd like! I'm still here trying to finish my "Twenty-four Tini" before walking back to our hotel and it keeps getting better and better as the evening comes on. Food tasted great. We went for lunch and it wasn't busy. We were seated right away but then waited 10-15 minutes before our waiter came over. 2 other tables were seated after us and before we saw our waiter. After the waiter finally came, service was very good but we had set a time limit and we're 4 minutes away from leaving. I am glad we stayed. The macaroni and cheese was wonderful and the fish and chips were exactly what I hoped for. Slaw was not to my liking but I am not a huge slaw fan. Chicken Curry: 4/5- Flavor is very good, the chicken is cooked well, vegetables with the dish are decent. Its more of a minimal sauce dish so the rice provided soaks it all up easily. One of my favorite stops in Newport. Staff very friendly. They had a fountain with toys for kids to play with. Very family friendly. Pet friendly as well! It's outdoors with umbrellas. The clam chowder was absolutely amazing. I will come back here just for that. The salad and lobster roll was good. However I was puzzled with the amount of fries I had with the lobster roll. What a great neighborhood, kid-friendly pub right on Thames. The outdoor seating area with a fountain full of toys is totally clutch when you are trying to grab a bite of good food and a pint. The service is super attentive. One of the servers brought a mustache key chain for my son, and he was stoked. The burgers and wings are delicious. The baked fish was pretty delicious too. Ordered drinks which did take a long time to receive as waiter acknowledged. The food came out before the drinks and was delicious. Probably one of the better cost friendly options in town. Had grilled Mac which was good and wife had shrimp pasta. Very flavorful and portions where a little larger than most but still great. We found this place while wandering down Thames St. from our hotel. The first day (Saturday) we couldn't get in because the restaurant and outside bar were absolutely packed. There was music and frivolity, and we really wanted to go, but we didn't want to wait. We went back on Sunday and got in. The beer selection was terrific, so I opted for an nice Irish red ale. My wife ordered a cocktail. We were hungry, so I ordered a burger, and she got the clam chowder, which turned out to be her favorite of the trip (she had clam chowder at almost every place we went). In fact, we took 4 quarts home with us. The food was great, the staff and service were fantastic, and the atmosphere was fun and upbeat. I did NOT try the lobster roll- however- when you can sit and drink and eat with your dog by your side- winner winner!!! Loved O'Briens until today... we came to eat as we have been coming here for the past twenty years but were told it was a 30 minute wait we said sure and sat down with another party waiting and lots of empty tables. Two parties later who happened to come after us were seated right away so I asked if we needed reservations and was told straight out oh they come here four times a week so they get seated first... The staff here are unwelcoming and sometimes downright rude. Read the recent 1-star reviews to see what I mean. Due to COVID, I've only gotten takeout, but even for take out, the food is COLD. I doubt dining in would've made a difference. Other than that, the food is nothing to write home about. Typical touristy pub fare - except they apparently don't want tourists. I moved to Newport a few months ago and was really looking forward to trying O'Briens. It's not all bad, it was a beautiful day outside, so the ambience was great. Although, if you're going as a family, you should expect to be surrounded by college students and their colorful use of language. The food was just OK. The most disappointing thing about the food is actually the menu. If you go in not expecting this to be a true Irish pub, you'll fare better. Finally, the service was just horrendous. Looking across the room, I'd guess my server had five tables. Three of them were sat after us, and all had their food before us. I don't think she would have noticed if I didn't call her over. Our drinks sat empty on the table. These issues are usually helped by an engaged manager... And I certainly didn't see one of those. Anyway, I don't think I'll go back there because there are too many other good options. And I wouldn't recommend this place to a friend. read more

I went here as my first place to eat, it looked good and fun. I went in and told them it was just 1 person. I noticed rain was coming, and I asked to eat inside. They were trying to put me outside. I noticed a table near the bar and asked if I could sit there, she said sure and walked off. I emptied to get someone's attention, but all of the employees, including the hostess would not some over. I asked about some dinner rolls. The waitress who helped and the bar tender could see my first impression was not good and attempted to be caring and responsive. The food was good, the cracker crumbs were a little over cooked, but acceptable. The dinner rolls were an up charge, which I didn't know, but whatever. Overall it's a good choice. The hostess was poor and uncaring, but the rest of the people made up for her. Would have been a 4 star overall if not for the initial issue with the hostess.
