O'Henrys is a great coffee place for you to visit if you like the taste of stronger coffee! Their coffee has a very distinct flavor, which I really like. I always order an iced caramel latte w almond milk; you can never go wrong with this order! The staff was very friendly and quick, they make the experience so much better. COVID precautions are followed, the staff wears masks and there are plastic barriers between customers and staff. As for sustainability, I wish they would use the plastic lids you can sip out of rather than using a straw, but they let you pick up however many you need rather than giving you too many, which I appreciate. During a recent visit to town, a friend and I stopped in twice . It's obvious this place is a local favorite for coffee and baked goods. On our first visit , we arrived around the time they opened. We were there so early, they were taking the fresh baked muffins out of the oven! I ordered a Cafe Mocha which is essentially dessert in a cup if you agree to the whipped cream and chocolate syrup. The cappuccino chunk muffin was delicious if you feel like splurging and are not counting calories. I really didn't have any regrets polishing it off. My beverage of choice is almost always a straight hot cup of neat coffee--no milk, no foam, no sugar. Places that serve espresso-based drinks sometimes don't pay enough attention to the sad, boring pot of brewed coffee sitting down the counter. Not O'Henry's: there was a good and detailed explanation of my medium and dark roast choices, my dark roast was served in a proper, thick-walled ceramic cup, and it was exactly what a cup of coffee should be. My poor overworked Android phone was looking for its own shot of energy, but none of the available seats had outlets. No wifi password posted visibly, but I will confess my enjoyment of the coffee and banana cake rendered me too lazy to step up to the counter and ask. The banana cake was a little disappointing in that the banana flavor was milder than I would have liked. It tasted more like a mild carrot cake. We were in need of a fast/late lunch today and we didn't realize this location of O'Henry's doesn't have sandwiches/etc. - but since we were pressed for time, we opted for dessert rather than going elsewhere. We each had a piece of the peanut butter pie and it was good; not the best we've ever had, but certainly tasty ($3.95/slice). The woman behind the counter was very friendly and we had a pleasant conversation with her. There was also a young woman helping her and she was very sweet. It's a rather small place, but the interior is attractive and we liked the neighborhood. (Update on 4/9/13): We went there today in the early afternoon and got take-out coffee (two small cups of their strongest coffee, which was a little pricey [$2.50/each with tax] - although it tasted pretty good) and the young woman remembered us. I came here to meet up with some of my classmates on Friday for a group meeting. I was pleasantly surprised upon arrival. It's a quaint little neighborhood coffee shop that's good for when you want to meet up with your friends for a cup of joe or people watch. Many of the people that came into the shop appeared to be regulars. The staff was extremely friendly and checked on us throughout our time here. I'm not a huge coffee drinker but they have a huge selection of coffee and you can buy fresh coffee beans to take home or gift. There is also quite a few pastries to choose from. While here, I ordered the oatmeal at the suggestion of a friend who saw my check in. Although it didn't look appealing before stirring, it was absolutely delicious. I am having my first o'henry's experience this morning! I am pleasantly surprised at the quality of their coffee and food. Plus I received excellent customer service. I have a goal to experience as many local shops as possible here in bham and I must say I don't know that I want to try any others after this. I tried the regular coffee of the day which is indian tiger and the lemon poppy seed muffin. We walked in for coffee this afternoon and my fiancé and I were both wearing mask per usual. As we were looking at the menu, the young gentleman behind the counter asked if my fiancé could cover his nose with his mask. He did, but as I looked around the coffee shop, not a single person was wearing a mask at all. This was a little frustrating for him. Seconds later another young couple came through the door putting their mask on but they also took their mask off when they saw everyone sitting down didn't have one on either. Went to O'Henry's for an evening Bible study, and found the atmosphere fantastic! After seeing all the reviews for the Snickerdoodle Mocha, it was my obvious choice. It was very good, and tasted like I dunked a Snickerdoodle cookie into a cup of coffee. I'd call that a win. I love downtown Homewood, it's absolutely adorable, and this coffee shop fits in perfectly. O'Henry's is super quaint with a massive selection of beans to purchase. The menu is very succinct, which is definitely a good thing for a small joint like this. Keeps it easy on the barista to produce good quality drinks. This is an awesome place for tourists & locals alike. The atmosphere & baristas are super welcoming and the coffee is DELICIOUS. I got one of the seasonal drinks (Eggnog Latte--iced) and it's smooth, low acidity, and just the right amount of sweetness. As you might notice, I don't live in Birmingham. I don't even live in Alabama. I live in California but the stuff is so damn good that I ordered it by mail. You know how much I love the stuff? So much that if they didn't ship, I'd pay for the coffee to take a first class people flight to my coffee pot. A friend came to visit and brought me a bag of the O'Henry's Southern Pecan-Cream coffee. (my coffee "dealer", she got me hooked!) Now it's the coffee that makes people comment on the smell when they walk through the door. It's like a commercial, with them then asking me to show them the bag so they can remember the name and order it themselves. One time I halfheartedly offered to send some home with a friend and she insisted she wanted her own full bag and would order. I used to love this place because people were pleased to serve you and generally seemed pretty happy there (I can't imagine working in a coffee shop and not being "happy"), but the past few times I have stopped in to O'Henry's, it seems like the staff is just about out of steam. So, basically, I had espresso with a little half n half. Weird. The dessert case is pretty. They used to have the best carrot cake I'd ever had and the last time I ordered it, it was dry and crumbly. ew. While I have not tried it recently, the caramel cheesecake used to be FANTASTIC - it looked different than what I was used to, so I didn't take my chances. I have had a few things from the pastry case recently, and it's not bad, just not fab. The place seems relatively run down - nothing kept up to date, clean, etc. The items for sale section looks like it's not been touched since the late 90s. Focus on the good - They have yummy coffee to take home. Very fresh and roasted here. The desserts are good and I've heard the sammies are good here too. O'Henry's is one of my favorite go-to coffee shops. I am not a go to a coffee shop multiple times a week kind of person. But when I do, I like a good quality shop. The location is great. In Downtown Homewood, which is a personal favorite of mine. It can get a little crowded in there at peak times. But that is a good problem for them to have. It is a great centralized location for a place to meet people. Their coffee is always great. Heike and I, in our continued quest for great coffee in Alabama, stumbled upon this place kinda as a "what have we got to lose" stop. To our surprise, this place was and is exactly what we were looking for. One word, AWESOME!!! Now, as I mentioned before, I'm not coffee critic; I do however know my coffee, as I am palatized (new word) to only rich, robust, full-bodied Ambrosia (good coffee); Heike is German (no explanation required). The coffee, people, service, and atmosphere are unparalleled compared to the places we've been thus far. I really enjoyed the cafe environment, as did Heike. It's our new place for Sunday coffee. My drink of choice is the Turtle Deluxe. It is much like a mocha but has a hint of hazelnut and caramel. Perfect. They also have an immense selection of coffee beans. African Classic and Southern Pecan are among the best in my opinion. Although all are sure to be unique and delicious. Yes, there's a Starbucks on every corner, but frankly, their coffee is over-roasted, i.e., it tastes burnt. Why people prefer burnt coffee, especially at $5/cup, is beyond me. And why are the people who complain about Monsanto the same ones who line up at Starbucks for burnt coffee and $3 water? There is a solution: try a local coffee shop! O'Henry's has great coffee, which is what I tend to like in my coffee shops. No books like Crestline Coffee & Books, but you can bring your own book. Also, the 4:00 chocolate chip cookies go great with coffee. Just don't expect there to be any left at 5:00. Good muffins, cakes, etc. the chocolate lava cake is wonderful, though very over-priced at $5. For covid-19 precautions, the tables were socially distanced and everyone was wearing masks as long as they don't eat or drink something. This is my favorite of the O'Henry's in Birmingham. I just adore the atmosphere the whole wall of coffee beans creates. The ceiling had these antique gorgeous tiling on it, and the room just screams study in me! I have pretty much always gotten a regular cappuccino, but those fresh smoothies look amazing.
