I'm a huge fan of the potato soup. But that's really all I can say that I'm a real fan of. I've tried multiple items on the entree menu and I just can't say that I really love any one of the entrees to order again..I've just never been wowed. Ive visited this location multiple times and I feel like the menu is over priced for basic "American dining" with an " irish twist" aka a corn beef sandwich, some Irish beef and some Irish soups. Salmon was not impressive, the Tuscan sea food was underwhelming and almost tasted like saltwater, I couldn't taste anything else but seawater. When I first moved to Berkley 10 years ago I wasn't too impressed with this place but I gotta say, they've changed it up and we go there pretty frequently now. Not sure why so many bad reviews on the servers, we've never been treated anything but polite. Maybe a change up in employers? Lunch menu, I'm addicted to the Anniversary Salad. The lettuce is cut fine (which I love) and they do not skimp on the blue cheese and bacon - ask for the dressing on the side which can be heavy handed. The tequila shrimp wrap is simple but good. The last time we were there on a saturday because we didn't want to dress up and wait to eat, we were surprised by a cool jazz band playing. I had vegetarian portabello ravioli - and yum! We were starving so we ordered the crab cakes and spinach stuffed mushrooms to start. Crab cakes were great but those mushrooms were divine. They also surprised us with a s'mores dessert. They brought out a small bowl of fire (yes fire) with skewers and all the ingredients, we had people stopping by asking what it was and we saw two tables order one up right away. Don't miss the bloody mary mornings, perfect with some crabs benedict. If you prefer traditional, the fish and chips are one of the best around, and we've tried ALOT- and you can't pass up the clam chowder which Im usually not a fan of but theirs is so rich and creamy, I end up stealing half my husband's bowl. While I wouldn't call Omaras a gourmet restaurant it's a great local joint that isn't pretentious and you can still have great food. read more

Really, this place cAn go either way, depends on what you order and who is working when you're there. There are some really unique and unexpected things: note the fresh, homemade tasting jam trio that comes to your table with breakfast!! Yum! On the per hand, half of the time the waitresses will fail to bring it so sometimes you have to ask for it. I've been there with great service, but more often than not, it's near awful. Last breakfast, weekday and I was one of two tables in the whole place and this happens: He waitress for the other table refills his coffee, pus the coffee away and then Talks to the hostess. I ask them for a refill and they wait until my waitress comes back, (from where? There's no one there), to tell her to refill my coffee. By now, I'm done and looking for my bill. I'm no sure if they pick up on the less than 10% tip when their service is so bad or they think people sometimes cheap? read more

My girl recently threw a baby shower for our friends at O'Mara's in their banquet room and the staff deserves major applause. The managers and the catering servers were all so gracious and helpful and fulfilled any request asked of the facility. The food was timely and even though the group was large they did a great job keeping up with drink orders. That said, I swear the shepherd's pie I had for lunch had refried beans instead of a meat filling but it still tasted pretty good. read more

Ok... I don't know where to start with this one. So, I know it's a restaurant, but I'll start with the band. As we arrived we were greeted by the sound of Flowinicity, a band playing jazzy covers and a crowd pleased with their efforts. They were the saving grace of the night. You know how they say that on the Titanic the band played on, yeah that! The second thing to greet us was a pungent fishy odor. Our server, Tonya was very pleasant and attentive, however several people besides her felt the need to continually ask about ordering and we had been there for less than 5 minutes! We couldn't even look through the menu, because of the constant interruptions. We ordered two cocktails. One was a signature drink, the Ruby Rose (grapefruit vodka with lemonade and strawberries) and the other was a Titos vodka and cranberry. The Ruby Rose was ok, but my husband's drink was EXTREMELY watery. They served a single shot and juice in a large beverage glass with a bunch of glass. The waitress offered to take it back and have it fixed. Then began begging us to order again! We were really just there for the drinks and band, but we succumbed and I ordered the Chicken Mackinaw. It should have been absolutely yummy. It was a chicken breast covered with mozzarella cheese, mushrooms and bacon with a marsala sauce. Well, it wasn't. The chicken had a weird taste to it, not spoiled just weird. We packed up and asked for the bill. We later found out one reason why the drinks were watery (even the replacement). My husband observed it sitting on the bar waiting, for about 5 minutes to be served . We noticed that we had been charged for 3 drinks. We asked the server about it. She said she had asked the manager to make an adjustment, but she had refused, even though the full drink have been taken away. She went to speak to the manager again and we received a new bill. That was when we noticed that one drink had been removed but the drink that was served had been upcharged by almost $3. I asked to speak to the manager. After a five-minute discussion, which included some discussion about the chicken, she fixed the bill and requested that we come back again. Well that's never going to happen, especially when you tell me the chicken isn't seasoned in any way. It was supposed to get some flavor from the sauce. My suggestion is that you eat and drink elsewhere. Then come listen to the band and order a pop. read more

O'mara's is a nice somewhat 'Irish pub' -- though more of casual restaurant in Berkley. We go O'mara's because they have an extensive menu covering basics like steak to shepherd's pie. During my recent visit, I had the mixed grille plate, which consist of grilled chicken, italian sausage, a couple ribs, two shrimp, and a small steak brochette. The meal also included fresh sautéed green beans and a basic tossed salad. Oh, I can't forget the fresh bread!! Each of the items on my 'make a hog of yourself platter' were very tasty -- the chicken was just a tad over seasoned (salty). However, this didn't stop me from eating everything on my plate like a good boy. My mother would be proud. The real bonus of the night was our server Donna. She was everything you want your server to be: prompt, friendly, and very nice. She made sure our drinks stayed filled and our food was delivered promptly. She is real star! read more

We went for Sunday brunch. Really good. I had an asparagus and potato omelet, my husband had a texmex omelet and we split an order of biscuits and gravy. Everything was good. But the high points were the texmex omelet and the homemade jams. Although the food was fid and the server we had was fine, I should point out that the food does seem to take longer to come out. Overall two tables near us clearly had bad service. One table walked out and based on what we saw I don't blame them. Excellent food though. read more

Went for breakfast for my first visit ever. Chose my own scramble with gluten-free toast, and it was good. Good portion size, GF bread wasn't stale like it often is at restaurants. Waitress CeeCee was also very good - helpful but didn't constantly bug me. Downgrade for the condition of the place: sagging water-damaged ceiling boards in the dining room; thick black plastic stapled/taped up in the corner near my table above the sliding partition doors (must have been to cover up something even worse looking); hangers and nails in the wall with nothing hanging on them; unfinished DIY repairs here and there. The word "clean" didn't really come to mind, either. There were cobwebs on the can lights gathering dust. And yeah, they bring you a little tray of three pots of homemade jam, but I couldn't bring myself to touch them. Waitress had to "trade out a lid" due to a large gooey thumbprint on one of the lids, which gave me a chance to look inside and see some kind of food gunk (bread crumbs maybe) stuck inside the jar. No thanks. I probably won't be back to eat. Maybe some night for drinks. Maybe not. read more

Came here yesterday for a family brunch and left a little disappointed. Prices were rather odd-eggs and toast was $5, but the portions were very small. I ordered two eggs, scrambled, and received what was about half an egg. Pancakes were dry. Service was good, but gradually declined after about halfway into our meal. Our waitress was attentive, but it got pretty busy, so she couldn't really check in with us as much as she should have for a large group. We probably won't return. read more

Wonderful Saturday brunch on the patio this morning. It was our first time and while we were out walking the dog we decided to stop in and ask if she could come on the patio while we ate. They promptly brought her a giant bowl of water! Service was great, delicious homemade bread rolls right out of the oven, and yummy brunch options. Cool spot to go right in town. I do love their corn beef and their tap beer selection. On a Thursday or Friday night this can be the spot to be if the weather is right. Throughout the week it is a nice spot to visit with the kids and family. In the evening it becomes more of a pub. Great place right down the road. A must check out. read more

Wow, I'm so surprised that O'Mara's got such mixed reviews. I've been there about five times and I've had nothing but positive experiences. The place IS dark, but that is what lends to its charm. I love hearing Irish music playing softly in the background (I've yet to visit during a live band performance). Also, I love the fact that they use real linen. The service has never been either. As far as the food is concerned, I am a fan. I've had the corned beef and cabbage, which was tender, well seasoned, and just plain old goodness. I've also had the coconut shrimp salads, some standard fare, and their chicken and bread pudding dish. The last dish was an interesting take on the chicken and waffles that are growing in popularity, but instead of fried chicken, O'Mara's does a baked chicken breast accompanied with a delicious bread pudding that has a fruit topping. Sounds odd, but it's really quite good. I paired it with a nice Riesling. It's unfortunate that other Yelpers have had this problem, but I'll continue to patronize this place. I'm 40 years old, but I love being around the old-timers, which largely comprise the crowd that dine here. read more

We went here for breakfast on Sunday... Food was good. The scrambles looked awesome! My smoked salmon frittata was pretty good. I definitely recommend the bloody mary bar! $5 and make it the way you like it!!! They even had smoked salmon stuffed olives & blue cheese stuffed olives - YUM! The service was excellent. 4 stars for service, 2 stars for food=3 stars overall We went here on a Saturday night because my husband had a gift card. after reading the reviews, I can't say I was looking forward to the dinner but hey, it's a free meal. Our server, Nicole, was SO nice and accommodating. She was always very fast with her service, getting us more water, and refilling our wine glass. We split the smoked salmon appetizer. It was ok, basically a filet of salmon cooked, which was not really what I was expecting. My husband got the french onion soup and the soft shelled crab (a special). The french onion soup was pretty salty. I didn't try his main course because it literally was two crabs dipped in fry batter and fried, which I found to be a tad unappetizing. I ordered the maurice and it was pretty good. Overall, a decent experience but I doubt we will ever go back as we live downtown. read more

I also want so badly for omaras to be better. I really should give it three and a half stars because the place seems to have consistency issues. I have always found the food to be great, and reasonably priced ( particularly if you get any of the specials), but the service is not always four star material. Don't get me wrong, alot of times it's great, but I have certainly had to sit with an empty glass (water or drink) a fair bit longer than I would have liked to a few times. Nonetheless, I frequent the place fairly often and think that it is usually pretty brilliant. I recommend the house steak, prime rib thursday, and the after ten 1/2 price drinks. Also, they sometimes get some pretty good acts in there. The orbitsuns played just last week, and they get some good comedians and Quizzo on wed. nights. Overall, really like the place, just think it could so easily be a solid four instead of the 3 1/2 it really is. read more

Dirty. Run-down. Service was slow, clueless. My girlfriend ordered a $28 NY strip steak. I ordered a half a rack of baby back ribs. Server says she'll be back with bread. Never comes back with bread. 15 minutes later the server tells me they are out of ribs. I get an $18 sirloin. Both steaks come out at the same time. I ordered mine medium. It's at least medium-well, if not well-done. My girlfriend's steak is well-done, even though she ordered it medium-well. I ordered the fries. Server brings out a baked potato. I tell her fries, she takes it away. My girlfriend sends her steak back, but not before we have to flag down another server as ours has vanished. By the time her new steak comes out, my steak is colder than a brass toilet seat. At least the fries are hot, although they are flavorless. Kudos to them, they did comp my girlfriend's steak. There was the five buck cover charge (it was St. Patty's day and a Saturday) and I took a seat at the bar. I ordered the Shepherd's Pie (having had to digest corned beef and too much cabbage at a Deli earlier in the day) and a a draft IPA. The entree was good when it finally came, but a bit unexpected. It was not and actual pie, but layers of meet and cheese in gravy. They took my credit card to start a tab, and it took quite awhile to settle the check. They were understandably BUSY. I had my bridal shower here on Saturday and had a very positive experience. The servers were friendly and attentive (particularly with the drink orders, which I've had issues with at similar events at other venues). The food was good, too - we had 3 menu options and people at my table enjoyed all of them. Had multiple guests comment positively on both the service and the food. There was another party at the back of the same room we were in which we were a little worried about but it ended up being fine (I think we were both pretty energetic groups so it wasn't a problem but could have been if we were a quiet bunch). We definitely were pushing it at the later end of our event but they were very polite and didn't make us feel rushed even though it was clear they had to get the next group in quickly. Would definitely come back to see Blackthorn or comedy night when I'm in town again. read more

I am a regular customer at O'Maras and always have a pleasant dining experience. The wait staff is always very friendly. They make me feel very welcome and taken care of. They know where I like to sit and always call me by name. They have a very yummy brunch menu with some unique options. Dinner is also very good. Whether I am enjoying a beautiful summer day on their patio, having a hearty meal while watching the Tiger game, or listening to great entertainment over dinner, I am always satisfied with the experience. We reserved the back portion of the restaurant for an 80th birthday party for 35 people. Planning this party went very well and the event person gave me lots of ideas and help. The food menu was great- three main dishes to pick from and each person had their own menu, plus the kids had a children's menu with foods they like. Service could not have been better. O'Mara's is a blessing to downtown Berkley. One of few full service restaurants (translation: not a diner, bar, or breakfast joint), it brings a sense of legitimacy to an otherwise lacking downtown area. Situated on the corner of Berkley's main intersection at the beginning of town, you couldn't ask for a more accessible locale. The menu is very diverse and the prices support the quality of food served. Being an Irish establishment, you'd expect their Irish dishes to be the best parts of your selection. While they are good, it's nice that other types of cuisine are at or above the same level. The one thing that bothered me most (and won't be a deal breaker for most) was the paltry selection of beers. While the bar is not their big draw, i hate that is was neglected so. Still, what they do have is adequate and should suffice nicely for anyone who isn't a beer snob (which I profess to be). Atmosphere is a bit dingy and dark. You can definitely tell this place has been here for a while. However it is well maintained and clean. The staff is super: always attentive, always quick to offer opinions on dishes you're unsure of. To top it off, the management is always wandering about making sure your dining experience is satisfactory. And if it's your first time in, they'll typically spring for desert (all of which are amazing). Not only one of the best in Berkley, but as good a choice as you can find in the Woodward Corridor. read more

Let me start by saying that when we visited O'Mara's, we ate in the bar. We arrived and were informed that the main dining room have been reserved and we could either sit in the bar or on the patio, but with a warm evening, we opted for bar. The table we sat at was a high-top, and a major issue with this is that the stools do not easily move and caused some initial difficulty establishing comfort. The menus have a ton of heft and if you are not careful, you may end up knocking over a water glass (I did; it was empty, luckily). The service was prompt and personable, and the bartender was a joy to watch. This restaurant does have a bit of an identity crises, running the gamut from few Irish dishes, to French classics, to American-inspired. With a name like O'Mara's, we went in expecting a little more Irish Pub feel. The entree prices do seem a little high, and while some of them sounded spectacular, the prices deterred from choosing them. The sandwich prices were very reasonable considering the amount of food you get (when you add in the amazing homemade bread and the excellent crab dip you receive for the table). The fries were absolutely delicious, and for anybody who is wondering, warm up nicely in the oven the next day. If I ever happen into Berkley again, I would definitely go back. read more

Was here 5/01 for lunch with my wife, she had the slim Jim and I had the 's press sandwich both good, service not so good, our server brought our drinks and we waited for the food close to 30 min. Our server never came back to tell us that there was a hold because of the fries, when we got our bill it took close to 10 min before it was picked up, If you are not in a hurry for lunch and want bad service this is the place for you read more

The commericals on TV told me that this place was amazing and that this was going to be a fabulous dining experience. We were just down 12 Mile and were looking for a place to dine with our little guy in tow, and this seemed like a good idea. We were pretty hungry so we didn't waste too much time mulling over the menu. We ordered the Chicken Strudel as an appetizer - the menu describing it as phyllo triangles filled with chicken, roasted red peppers and feta. My initial thought when it arrived was that it seemed pretty small - but I cut into one, and as bad as I feel saying this - the first thing that came to mind was that it tasted like the chicken quesadilla lean pockets that I used to it... with the exception of the phyllo. It wasn't disgusting, but it was not very good. Luckily the fresh bread they bring to each table was good enough to munch on. Our entree selections were the fish & chips and the Brewer's Sausage Platter. The fish and chips were a bad choice- I cannot stand it when the batter is soggy, and it was definitely soggy here. A lot of this dish went untouched. The Brewer's Sausage Platter was a ridiculous amount of food. There was kielbasa, bratwurst and knackwurst with sauerkraut, braised red cabbage and Irish potatoes. This dish was actually the one saving grace of the food that we were served. This dish actually had some flavor and did not disappoint. It would be wrong of me not to acknowledge that we also had incredibly good service. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly- I just wish he would have steered me in a different direction when we were mulling over our menu options... perhaps I would have been happier if I would have steered toward the more traditional Irish pub fare. read more
