My family and I used to dine here all the time. We had not been here since the move to the other side of the parking lot. We went there on Sunday to have a b early birthday dinner for my wife. I was not able to tell my own waiter to bring something out at the end of the dinner so we can celebrate my wife's birthday. Instead I went around and told two of the ladies that were working on the other side if they could perhaps bring an ice cream scoop with a candle in it. They told me they would. At the end of the dinner our bill came with no celebration whatsoever. I asked one of the ladies whatever happened to the ice cream and very rudely she told me "well I told him." And she walked away. Oba has all the offerings of a sushi restaurant - teriyaki, tempura, noodles, special rolls, and izakaya. But the real reason why I give this place 4 stars is because of its sushi bar and excellent service. Really, it's all about the sushi bar here. They serve up an impressive variety of standard and premium sushi. Yes, I'm talking about those "market price" offerings that are soOoo dangerous to your wallet. All fresh too. Maguro, sake, hamachi....always consistently good. Also excellent are: Live ebi (yes, the shrimp was live and squirming). Kinmedai Kanpachi Ono Pompano Suzuki Tai They also offer several unique rolls. I've tried almost of all of them and they're quite good but I don't find them to be especially impressive. The futomaki roll (all veggie) proves to be the most yummy...surprisingly....because I'm usually turned off by fish- or meat-less options. If you're a hardcore sushi lover, definitely check out their bar. Service is always good and attentive. I come here often and I'm beginnng to notice a lot of familar faces at the bar. 3.5 I keep changing my mind on my fave sushi place in Pasadena. I still don't have one but Oba came closer to fulfilling my like of a well-designed menu. Oh, it must have been the font they used. It is very large though as it's also an izakaya. I would stick to these cooked items as the sushi wasn't the freshest. I actually thought my chirashi bowl was quite disgraceful. I'm not sure how others can give 5 stars. To me, this takes away some credibility from Yelp. Im sorry, this is just bad Japanese food. I didn't noticed the Mexican sushi chefs behind the bar until the food came. Miso soup = tasteless; teriyaki chicken = extremely dry; shrimp tempura = pathetic (more like 90% batter, 10% shrimp); chicken katsu = dry, my wife's sushi = bad. Only thing acceptable was my daughter's Udon noodles, or should I say, just noodles and broth. Can't be anymore plain than that but for a kid, it's fine. If an adult ordered it, I'd be extremely disappointed. I don't like to write bad reviews but felt I had to in this case. It was a very bad experience for us. I had to get something to eat after my dinner here. The restaurant itself was fine. The food was just plain bad. I would prefer MacDonalds over this place. Maybe this was just an exception and not the norm. But there is no way this place can be a top Japanese restaurant in Pasadena. You can almost always tell how fresh the sashimi is going to be by how many variations of rolls are available on the menu. Certainly this is not scientific, it 's probably not even actually accurate but from eating sushi for many years it's almost always held true for me. I knew almost immediately reading the menu that we should probably stay away from the sushi, but I do this for you so we had to try it. Let's be honest, sushi on the Eastside is severely lacking. Decent is good here and edible is average. In a city that boast such prime examples of mediocrity (Sushi on Naples, Kabuki, A'Float Sushi to name a few), it doesn't take much to stand out. In fact, I'm fairly sure if someone opened a truly amazing sushi restaurant in Pasadena they would make a fortune. Oba is like the C student who sat next to you in high school, they don't raise the curve and they don't lower it. They just hold the status quo. I'd love to say that the izakaya side of the menu is better, but it's about the same as the sushi. They do however have a wide ranging and comprehensive saki menu, so you can drown your sorrows there. We tried a mix off the menu starting with Fried Oysters, which were passable. Oysters are best when they are breaded lightly, here it's quite heavy and while the oysters themselves were large they lacked any sweetness or defining taste to make them memorable. Shaab in Old Town Pasadena has a far superior version. We ordered a Crispy Rice Spicy Tuna plate that other Yelpers recommended, but it never arrived. The first plate of sushi was Sea Urchin. Oddly, it was the freshest of all the sushi. Odd, because usually if the Sea Urchin is fresh, the rest is too. The plate with the rest of the sushi came out and it just looked so sad. You could tell by looking at it that it wasn't going to be all that great. I kept thinking of those Foster Farm chicken in the tv ads, replaced by odd fish out of water. Salmon, Ono, Yellowtail and Unagi. All adequate. The best dish was also the last and not surprisingly was a roll. Sushi rolls work great in places like this where the fish isn't top level. By mixing other tastes and elements it's easier to cover the lack of quality fish. We got a Cajun roll, which had crab meat and shrimp tempura with chili sauce topped with albacore, fried garlic and onion and ponzu. I actually quite enjoyed it, it had a nice distinct flavor echoing the Cajun name. The setting is pretty nice considering it's in a mini mall off a side street in Pasadena. It's modern and open, it's comfortable, and has a nice sushi bar. The staff is very friendly, although the plates came out really slowly. Prices were reasonable but not amazing, and honestly not that different from a number of amazing sushi joints in Little Tokyo ten minutes away on the Pasadena freeway. Absolute worst service ever. 6 friends and I ordered food at 7:15 and it didn't come until after 8 and we had to ask them for it. Then we ordered more food because we got unbearably hungry waiting for our food for 45 minutes. Not surprisingly, we waited 1 more hour to get our second order of food. Worst of all, after waiting for such a long time, we found out we had to pay a 18% gratuity, for the absolutely terrible service and wait. It was not even that busy so there's really no excuse for how slow our food came out. We waited 1 hour and our food didn't even come out at all one time. We also paid more money than we owed and were over by around 50 cents and they didn't even offer us our change, and kept it. I know it was only 50 cents but the definitely should have at least given us the option to take it back. Needless to say, we will never be back. read more

As usual I have a craving for sushi almost nightly. This restaurant is located down the street from where I live so the convenience of this location is awesome and when they opened their doors, I of course went to try it out. The service is excellent with the staff being very polite and accommodating. The sushi is not bad but the specialty rolls can be bland. They do have some unique dishes which are good but doesn't quite make up for the rest of the menu. A plus is that there is happy hour! For the best sushi, I'd wander toward Little Tokyo.. but for the convenience of the this place to get food after a long hard day at work.. you can't beat that. read more

Oba has officially turned into my only Go To place to squelch my frequent and persistent sushi cravings. The service is always great - fast, friendly, fast - and the tastiest Japanese food in Pasadena, hands down. That's right, you heard it here, Yelpers. THE BEST JAPANESE FOOD IN PASADENA! When you go, you must try the exquisite Crispy Rice Spicy Tuna. It's crunchy rice chips with a very generous portion of spice tuna slathered on it and topped with their house sauce. Don't know what's in the sauce and truthfully, I don't care. All I need to know, and I have verified on many occasions, is that eternal yumminess is infused in that house sauce. 'Nuff said. And if you are a fan of Kama, then do try their Yellowtail Kama when you go. Huge portion, and always cooked to perfection, with a nice crispy skin, and juicy meat on the inside. Oba's specialty rolls are truly a gift from the sushi making gods. My favorite is the Volcano roll. It sounds like the kitchen sink of sushi rolls, but trust me, it is soooooo choice. The bay shrimp and sauce that its baked with is surprisingly perfect with the spicy tuna. I have yet to try their sushi and sashimi specials, as my Adult ADD prevents me from seeing past the main menu in front of me. However, I will be instructing my companions on my next excursion to Oba to strictly prohibit me from leaving without trying them out. And for those of you who enjoy tying one on at the end of a grueling workday, Oba hosts a regular happy hour Mon to Fri from 5:30 to 7:00. We've been looking for a new sushi restaurant in Pasadena as our last favorite had been very mediocre our last three visits. My daughter and her friends go to Oba Sushi very regularly so we decide to try it. It was Saturday night at 7:30. I made a reservation and we walked right in and our table was ready for us. We ordered miso soup, Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna, Richie Rich Roll, Popcorn Shrimp Roll, Shrimp and veggie tempura and salmon, tuna and yellow tail sushi. We enjoyed it all. All our dishes tasted fresh and the presentation was nice too. The service was very attentive. We will definitely go back for another try. read more

Oba will officially now be my new lunch time go to for sushi. It is walking distance from my office, so it is obviously fast and convenient for the lunch time hour. I have only had the pleasure of dining here once, but I plan on being a repeat customer! Our waitress was very friendly with a continuous smile on her face. We originally made a reservation not knowing how busy this place gets for lunch, but it turned out the reso was not needed. At 12:30ish they had plenty of open tables to choose from. The waitress even remembered my name and used it throughout the meal. I love it when servers are that personable! On my initial visit I had the California Roll and the Cajun Roll along with an iced green tea. The rolls were both delicious! The Cajun Roll was also fantastic, but a little different than what I had envisioned. It was a mixture of crab, shrimp tempura, and chili sauce topped with Cajun albacore, fried garlic and onion. The roll had tons of flavor and a little spicy kick which I always love! The fried onions were a little over baring though so I opted to take about 1/2 of them off the roll to better taste the other ingredients. All in all a pretty decent roll. The green tea was also very tasty. Definitely a more traditional Japanese green tea with a very mild flavor. Umm...won't be back again. We would rather drive few more blocks to OTP for Kabuki. When you go in, it is so obvious that this place is surviving because it is in Pasadena. The decor is really nice and clean with a little modern feel. Of course the parking is ample which is a plus. I never realized how much negative reviews on Yelp affect small businesses. I go to places for years, cause I like em and now I have to join Yelp to combat all the yahoos that get on here to complain. So I am giving 5 stars to all the places I have frequented and also flagging 1 negative comment that doesn't belong. I hope others do the same. Oba's great. Very relaxed atmosphere. The staff always has a smile. We go in there once a month and they know what my wife and I like. Very family friendly. The owner is always working hard, and saying hi to everyone. Definitely a must try! I am not the biggest sushi or fish fan so I ordered the Chicken teriyaki and tempura. It was so good! Luckily I was with friends who ordered several sushi dishes. All of the dishes tasted amazing and blew my mind on the way sushi is supposed to taste. After tasting the amazing sushi and really enjoying it, they ordered the fried oysters. I have never tried oysters because I was a little scared. But, since everything was so amazing, I decided to try one, and it was actually really good. THEN they challenged me with an oyster shooter. I was definitely hesitant but since I enjoyed everything I had eaten already, I decided to go for it. And wow it was so fresh and good. This is a review for a delivery order I placed yesterday evening. Nothing is more disappointing than bad sushi. Oba Sushi had decent reviews, so we thought we'd order a lot of different things, hoping we'd enjoy at least ONE thing. So my boyfriend and my order was as follows: crispy spring rolls (soggy), fries (spiced a lot, but the best thing we got... ironically for a Japanese place), lobster roll (ugh, too fishy, too gingery, fell apart), the Richie Rich roll that everyone raves about (gross... soggy), and a tempura roll with spicy tuna, which was also gross. We got the fried green tea ice cream with tempura, which was OK (2/5 stars), and was regrettably the second edible thing we ordered. For further elaboration, by "gross," I mean all the rolls had an overly fishy smell taste, which good sushi lacks, or an overly gingery smell, were soggy/wet, and just overall bad. And with the total pre-tip being $56, we deeply regretted choosing this place. We should have just gone to see the new Cruise movie and eatten at Rubios. Ugh... regrets! I hate giving bad reviews, especially when this review is based strictly on the quality of the food. The girl on the phone sounded nice, as was the delivery lady. The decor isn't horrible, it's casual and comfortable. The location is a bit of a turn-off, in a mini-outdoor mall. Once you get past all that you can really enjoy the food! I loved their yellow-tail with jalapenos, very simple, but very delicious with a little punch. I also loved the spicy tuna WITH CRUNCHY RICE. I am a fan of plain crunchy rice, but make them into little bite-sized dollops with spicy tuna and they are to-die-for! I always have to try a Japanese restaurant's salmon skin hand roll, and I have to say that the salmon skin was deliciously crispy, but not as flavorful as it could have been. They have a little happy hour on their sushi until 7pm , so that was an added bonus. I'd say this is one of the better Japanese restaurants in Pasadena! read more

Oba has a very relaxed environment with friendly servers! I come here at least once a week. There are two sushi bars with two flat screens behind the bar. It is great if you want to catch a quick bite to eat and watch the game! There are two seating rooms so you have more than enough room for large parties. I love this place because it has such an extensive menu and very reasonable prices for quality sushi, which is hard to find in Pasadena. They have great appetizers and high quality sashimi! My favorite appetizers are the sashimi salad and the fried oysters ($8 each). Also be sure to try the sweet miso albacore sashimi and the Thai snapper sashimi- you won't be disappointed. Definitely check this place out for dinner any day of the week (it's open on Sundays!). They also do takeout if you don't have time to sit and eat. read more

Returned to Oba after too long an absence. What a joy! We enjoyed the Omakase with live shrimp. Nice quality fish. Great octopus kaarage - outstanding. Some interesting sashimi - barracuda, kanpachi. Creamy delicious ankimo monkfish liver - delicious. Among the small plates, the crab cake is something else again - light, unfried, flavorful. Do not miss! They gave an array of interesting rolls too. I am generally more fond of nigiri sushi than I am of rolls. But the rolls at Oba are delicious. Start with the Richie Rich - a twist on the spicy tuna roll - spicy tuna, with jalapeno and sweet sauce topped with tuna, yellowtail, avocado, lemon rind, chili and ponzu. Great selections of sakes (KIRA - SUPER DRY!!). Great service in a beautiful space hidden in a strip mall on Glenarm. We came here for Saturday dinner because we wanted some Japanese food such okonomoyaki and squid balls besides sushi or sashimi. We have ordered the following for our meal: Takoyaki Okonomoyaki Yakisoba Tempura Shrimp Roll Soft Shell Crab Salad The food came quickly once we put in the orders. Yakisoba was the main dish which came with side salad with peanut dressing and miso soup. Tempura shrimp roll was delicious and it came with plenty of fried shrimp on top of the roll. Soft shell crab salad was good with its spicy dressing which I liked. Yakisoba was perfect with a good blend of noodle and cabbage, and it came with chicken. It was not greasy or heavy. Takoyaki was okay but it needed some Japanese mayo to top it off. We were both disappointed with okonomoyaki because it was to doughy like eating rice cake and it came out to quick. It tasted like it was not fresh because it came out too fast. It should take about 10-15 minutes to make one from scratch (when we were in Japan, it took 20-30 minutes to make one full sized okonomoyaki). Plus it also need some Japanese mayo to top it off. The place was relaxing with plenty off parking and it was very inexpensive. I will try to come back to try other things menu such as sushi and some grilled meats. read more

Short and sweet review: YUMM!!! Went this past Sunday with a group and seated promptly. We sat on the left side of the restaurant facing the bar and big screen plasma. Service was polite, quick, and attentive. All the fish was impeccably fresh and delicious; my favorite was the almost buttery fatty melt in your mouth hamachi toro and the yellowtail collar. I believe Japanese cuisine has 3 basic must, Freshness, Flavor and Order of presentation and Oba sushi easily met all three. We ordered an array of items and were blissfully rewarded -edemame -miso soup -sunomono (cucumber salad) -yellowtail jalapeno sashimi -albacore garlic soy sauce sashimi - tempura entree (Light and crispy batter) - unagi donburi - hamachi toro (yum) - unagi (could never have too much unagi  ) -spicy tuna roll -spicy scallop roll - Crunchy roll -yellowtail collar (nicely grilled, enjoyed every last morsel) Cons: There was a mix up in our bill; we were charged $15 for the hamachi toro while menu indicates $13/order. Informed the waitress, she apologized and quickly rectified the problem. Based on three visits! I really want to like this place. The service is always good and I appreciate that. However, the food and the prices leave something to be desired. It never seems very busy here and I think that contributes to the very small portion sizes and not the freshest of fish. Eat here!! My husband and I have been coming here for YEARS and have never once had something that we didn't like. Be sure to say hi to the owner, he is so sweet and clearly cares very much about the art of what he does here. There are special touches on the nigiri that are just right to compliment the flavor and of course the quality of fish here is great. To that, this place is a steal! As far as sushi places go that have this quality, this is a very financially accessible restaurant. Also, there are rotating specials--if's fun to come and see what is new to try ^_^ The sushi rolls are the perfect size for a lunch for a lady--and they are soo delicious. I particularly enjoy the one with baked bay scallops when I'm in the mood for something savory. They also have lunch specials (bentos) that are at a great price. We threw a surprise party for my mom here in February and the whole staff was SUPER. We were able to come in early and arrange to design a menu to narrow down some of the choices to make it easier, they printed one up for us at no extra charge on beautiful paper. They even made space in their freezer for our ice cream cake. We love everyone who works here! Since they opened, we've been eating here about twice a month because it's super delicious and is very conveniently located. The staff knows us well and when one of my family is missing, they always ask where they are! I am probably the most dedicated fan of the Richie Rich Roll that Oba has! We ordered a variety of dishes, spicy crispy tuna ( yum!), Richie RIch Roll, Caterpillar Roll, Tofu Steak, Poke Salad, Salmon Skin Salad, Shishito Peppers, Uni ( sea urchin) Ankimo, and the Yellow Tail Jalapeno. Thankfully, the circa-Brady Bunch motif of Ohana was lost in the remodel; bad news is that the new spot is pretty cold and smooth. But since when am I a critic of decor? Tucked in the corner of a small strip mall, there's a restaurant called Oba. The walls have images and artistry representing Thailand, including their homeland beer. The menu has a lot of offerings, plus host of sushi to select from. I didn't personally try anything from the sushi bar, but I did observe several people ordering from both the sushi bar and menu. I had the tempura and rib combination plate. The tempura batter tasted fresh and coated the shrimp and vegetables quite well. Absolutely no complaints there. The ribs on the other hand were sliced so thin, that there was very little meat. If I had to guess, the ribs were sliced about 1/8-inch thick. I guess I'm more used to the way I receive them from Korean or Hawaiian restaurants where there cut 3/8-inch thick or thicker. i picked this place for my birthday dinner since i've never been and wanted izakaya and it got pretty good reviews. sorry, yelpers, you've failed me. it was just meh....sorry, friends who paid for my dinner! seaweed salad: eh bacon wrapped scallops: eh. the scallops were kind of small. karaage: FAIL. have had much better karaage elsewhere and much more of it. there were only 6-8 pieces. while the sushi was fresh, the rolls were TINY like thimbles. seriously, they were slightly bigger than a quarter. i am not joking. come on, rice and fillers like krab aren't expensive!!! i understand we're in a harsh economy but if you're serving up $12 rolls, i expect them to be bigger than the rolls they serve at TODAI. otherwise than being overpriced, the fish was of good quality hence getting an extra star by itself. service was attentive though they were super slow into getting our order. what made me throw up my hands and say WTF were the fries served at another table. WTF? seriouslly, fries at izakaya??? yeah, fusion japanese but the fries cheapen the image of this place. all in all, i would have driven a few more miles down to honda ya for real izakaya. so totally pass on oba. read more
