We've enjoyed the seafood bbq the most naturally because most other restaurants only have the standard, beef, pork and chicken options. The variety of seafood was all fresh and clean and we couldn't get enough of the fresh clam juice with scallions as a soju chaser, haha! Yes, but we also ordered everything except the kitchen sink because we were saving our appetites all day for this. Well worth it. To start, we got the cheesy corn. I found this to be an odd item at a Korean BBQ. This is something I'd think I would find at a Texas BBQ... Absolutely amazing. Now trying to eat it with chop sticks was a task, but still was excellent. I got a bottle of the sweet raspberry Korean wine and my wife got the Milky Rice Wine. I loved the raspberry wine. My wife did as well. To the point that I wound up with the Milky Rice Wine. For dinner, we got the prime Beef sample, the premium Pork platter and the clams sauna. The beef melted in your mouth. Everything was cooked right in front of us. The pork was out of this world and the clams were fresh and came with a mix of mussels and shrimp. One of the best Kbbq experiences ever!! They don't take reservations and we waited ~40 minutes but it was worth it! The meat was high quality especially loved the rib eye (it was so tender it just melts in your mouth). It came with a lot of side dishes -- steamed egg, miso stew, banchan, fried rice. First time here at this Korean bar restaurant. They have awesome happy hour specials. 3 large dishes for about $43. They also have a drink special 2 beers and a soju for about $16. The food cane out fast and everything was tasty! Service was also awesome. We will be back. My only complaint is the sign in sheet. This is a hidden gem! The food was great, flavorful and delicious. The staff was so friendly and joyful. My friends and I wanted to make a reservation but they weren't taking reservations, only walk in. When we arrived, the wait was about an hour but it was pretty quick. Once we sat down, we ordered the seafood pancake, cheese corn, oysters, beef and pork combo, and seafood. There was so much food, we didn't resize the when you order the beef combo, it comes with another entree dish. We were all very full and satisfied. Owned by the same owner as bada story which is next door. I really enjoyed my dinner here. We stopped by on our way to Washington DC and wanted some grilled meats. We absolutely loved the surf and turf combo. It has a variety of beefs with steamed seafood. These are the big clams too and the portions were huge. But then again there was only two of us and we ordered the feeds 3-4 portion. So in that aspect it may be too little for a 3-4 party. Our favorite was the crispy rice at the end. It is usually made with pork fat but they used beef fat. The sauces were exceptional as it touched all different palettes: nice mayo flavor or a spicy Korean flavor. read more

Came back here again. We got the beef combo and ordered one short rib. They cooked short rib first. They are very tender. Then the beef brisket is ok. It's very mediocre compared to the short rib. I wouldn't order it again. Then they cooked the ribeye. I like ribeye the best. It's more tender than the short rib. Then they cooked the fried rice. I think the kimchi they put in the fried rice is a bit too sour and the butter is a bit too much. So the fried rice is a bit too greasy. But the service is very good. read more

After a weekend of staying home and being mopey about the snow last weekend, my guy thought it would be a good change of scenery if we went for a short drive out of the city. Since he had to deal with getting the car rental, I decided to find a place for us to have dinner. He wanted Korean BBQ and he's mentioned oysters so I decided to go here to get the both worlds. I came here a few years ago with my brother for my birthday and we got the grilled clams and mussels. It was fine for what it was so I didn't think much about how the food would be here, but boy...what a bummer... We got the surf and turf this time around and the meat was subpar, the boiled seafood soup had such tough clams, the oysters were not fresh, but the cold noodles were one of the best I've had. I had my guy try the meat with the cold noodles, Korean style, and he just thought it was fine. I thought it would blow his socks off, but it did not.... All fairness, the meat was cold by the time the noodles came so not my fault. They don't take reservations and you cannot get on the waitlist online or by phone. You have to scan a barcode to get on the waitlist. The wait wasn't all that long so it was fine. My guy and I unfortunately was not able to eat all the food that came with the moment. We took the food home, but overall, don't think I will be going here again. The reviews here and Google were mixed so I took a very educated risk, since I thought it was okay when I was there with my brother. Obaltan is a great experience! I've been here before and had the beef combo and loved it. So I came back and decided to try the total shellfish experience. If you're a seafood person, you'll thoroughly enjoy this menu item. FYI, there's A LOT of clams. For 2 people, if you're not a huge clam person, this will be a lot of clams and it may be difficult to eat. The clams were great and tasted fresh but it was a lot to eat. My boyfriend and I were struggling to finish all the food. Definitely would recommend sharing between 3-4 people. The shrimp, scallops, and mussels were fresh as well, and were nice to have something other than clams for our meal. Overall, it was a great experience with great food. Happening place on the weekends!! You have the option to either grill meat or seafood...need I say more?!!?!? The quality of the meat and seafood is 10/10 and the servers grill it for you so you don't have to worry about the food being over cooked. The space is not huge so there will be a bit of a wait on weekends but definitely worth the wait. No early book reservation. Walk in 7:45p on a Friday night and waited 45 mins. The host was great and my server was excellent. Everyone worked there was friendly. We're a party of 5 and ordered 3 combos. Clams, Porks and Beefs and I forgot take picture of the beef. (Combo come with steam egg, soup and fried rice) It was a great portions and was more then enough to fill us. By far it was a great experience and one of the best I have had in NJ. Obaltan is probably our favorite KBBQ spot. Have been here at least a dozen times and it never disappoints. We usually get the prime meat and seafood combo with kimchi fried rice, (yum, my fave!) From their banchan, salads, the soybean stew to the seafood pancake and japchae and the delicious cuts of meats and clams, shrimps, and scallops, everything is absolutely delicious. Despite it being a super casual, no frills vibe, the service is as if you're at the finest restaurant - amazing. My two kids (3 and 5yo) always enjoy their food, and despite them inevitably making a mess and usually spilling something, the servers are always super attentive and we are always made to feel welcome. They even have special plates and training chopsticks for kids. Because the restaurant is fairly small (maybe a dozen 6 top tables?), it can get super busy on weekends with longggg waits. Obaltan is a must go and I wish I lived next door so I could have dinner here every night. We got the clam combo w/ a seafood pancake and galbi (must get) -- between 2 people it was just enough food. We took half the pancake home for breakfast the next day. How can you go wrong with grilled seafood?! The oyster was mehhhh, didn't really care for it because it wasn't that good. The scallops were my favorite! When I go back, I'll probably just order a whole plate of scallops for myself (that's how good it was). The galbi was one of the best galbis I've ever had!!! I'm not kidding, idk if it's because the staff grilled it well or maybe it was the beautiful marbling in the meat. ORDER GALBI FOR EVERYONE!! The wait on Friday nights may go up to 2.5 hours, however it is worth the wait! We went with a group of about 9 of us. They seated us at two separate tables, so if you're planning on sitting as a large group it may be difficult. This was my first time having seafood at a Kbbq restaurant. The booths are nice and spacious and grants privacy for all group sizes. The grilled clams were amazing - extremely fresh and tasty. This review is based on several late night visits to Obaltan. There are few factors that this establishment offers which late night patrons gravitate towards. 1. They offer decent food quality 2. Both meat & some seafood (mostly clams) bbq are offered as well as choices of other Korean dishes. 3. They open until late. When I say late, they close around 4am during most days. If you are looking for some good late night food or simply a shot of soju, you are at the right place. However after ordering the beef combo, I always get the beef combo now. I love the beef short rib it has a nice marbly taste to it, almost gives a wagu flavor. I think this place is pretty good but I think I didn't end up ordering the right things 1. Thick cut pork belly is sooouper good and would recommend. They use a butane torch to get some extra smoky flavor on it, fuego gobble gobble 2. Steamed eggs for free, super good. 3. Army stew: uhhhhh it's really sweet... like way sweeter than any other stew I've had at a korean restaurant. After a couple bites I really couldn't finish it. 4. Kimchi Fried Rice with cheese and corn. This was pretty sweet too.. even if you didnt eat the corn cheese it was still pretty sweet and didn't have any spicy flavor on it. 5. Scallops. Also not very good. No flavor and pretty underwhelming I gave it a 3/5 bc i think my experience was meh, but I think the food can actually be super good if you only get the KBBQ items.
