I was really looking forward to trying this restaurant, though I was ultimately disappointed and very underwhelmed.
I was seated right away and water was brought to the table immediately. However, nearly 15-20 minutes had elapsed and no server had ever come over to introduce themselves and start the order which I found to be odd. The hostess even approached our table to ask if anyone had taken our drink order to which we said they hadn't. I assumed that soon after that, someone would come over. This wasn't the case. I then had to flag the hostess down after more time went by to let her know that we still hadn't been greeted. She later explained that there was a miscommunication between staff-- honestly, that was fine with me. Accidents happen, no big deal. I figured things would probably improve.
Finally, some 25 minutes later, a server comes over and in a very hurried way asks us if we're ready to order- no greeting or introduction. I'm guessing she was randomly assigned the table once it was recognized that we had sat for nearly 30 minutes with no service, and I'm sure at that point, she wasn't feeling too interested or invested in providing much of an experience for us. Ironically, the male server waiting on the table next to us came over to apologize, and made numerous subsequent attempts to chat with us and be personable-- our server did the absolute bare minimum.
Our drinks took 15 minutes; well, to be clear, a soda ordered took 15 minutes, and my drink never arrived-- I reminded the server, and then it finally came. I looked at the time-- it had been literally nearly an hour since we were seated. That's not an exaggeration because I sent a text to a friend when I arrived at the restaurant so the time we entered was essentially time stamped.
The food was overpriced and mediocre. The pesto was very bland lacking pine nuts, cheeses, seasonings; it kind of tasted like the kind made from the Knorr seasoning packet; the tomatoes were nearly pink which were flavorless and unripe. I added seafood. For 3 scallops and an average-sized portion of pasta, it was $24. That seemed steep for bland food. There was no salt and pepper on the table, nor was it offered. Most Italian places will offer fresh cracked pepper or grated parmesan-- neither were offered. No bread was provided at any point which I found odd for an Italian restaurant; small "bar style" breadsticks were on the table, but I don't think that's a good substitute. I asked for more, though none came.
The server didn't ask if we needed anything when the food was dropped off, nor was dessert offered at the end of the meal. Our bill was brought to us, so we then decided to ask. Once we inquired, our server mentioned the 4 options-- no attempt was made to make them sound appetizing-- in fact, she even said, "I can ask if there's sauce we can put on that" when we asked if two desserts in particular had a flavor to them-- more than just "eggless custard" and "sponge cake." We were soon informed that there was no sauce that could be added and they were out of sponge cake. So, they had 3 desserts and two were of tiramisu variety. Most nicer places have an actual printed dessert menu or a dessert tray, and at the very least, if they have neither, the server makes an attempt to make them sound appetizing and appealing. The neighboring waiter cheerfully offered his table dessert. The difference between our service and the table next to ours was very noticeable.
I'm a very patient person; I also worked as a server for over 10 years. I completely understand how unbelievably chaotic the restaurant environment can be, and even after waiting 60 minutes for a glass of wine, and the person I was with waiting 50 minutes for a soda, I wasn't even that upset....seemed a bit odd, but whatever. I hadn't given up on the experience. However, to never feel like the server wanted to make things better or "right", nor did she do one thing to make the experience feel more enjoyable or comfortable, is frustrating. Mistakes and miscommunication will always happen-- but, a good server then tries to make up for it and at least fakes caring. I couldn't believe it when I received the bill and not a single goodwill gesture was made. I waited 60 minutes for a $6 glass of wine and that couldn't even be comped? A complimentary slice of dessert couldn't be offered? I never ever complain or ask for anything from a restaurant. Never. However, I couldn't let this go-- it was the absolute principle. Granted, the server wasn't rude or disrespectful-- she was just extremely indifferent and did the bare minimum-- and after we sat there for so incredibly long, I would have just thought effort would have been better-- at least faked. After having to basically ask and point out that nothing was done to make the experience right, some bill discounts were taken. However, I still paid over $80 (with tip) for an extremely average meal with poor service. read more
