The second star is based on the fact that they have great service and awesome special perks for kids. A prize at the end and a little bowl of cereal and a twizzler for them to play with and eat when you first sit. Other than that, it's pretty bad. We've been twice hoping that we simply had a bad time the first time but it was an off day for them. Today we had the same experience we had before, amazing service TERRIBLE food. Beyond everything being cold (and I mean, sitting in a fridge cold) the only hint you can count on is whatever you order from the menu won't come as it states on the menu. Which wouldn't be a big deal if it tasted good but when it's bad and bland andddd not what is listed it's kinda a bummer. We ordered the Mamas home. It said breaded porkchop with gravy and eggs etc. What we got was a burned chop with no breading to be found, a side of ICE COLD gravy and some undercooked potatoes. I will say, the eggs were cooked super well. The grilled cheese we ordered was only cooked on the sides and the inside was not melted at all. Fries on the side were cold as well. Bummed over this bc we love to support local business and really gave it the benefit of the doubt, really happy to return after one bad time bc every restaurant has bad days. What an unexpected, but great find. On my way to an appointment, looking for breakfast found this gem. I have a nostalgia for old school American Dinner's and this spot hits all the notes, from the decor to the 40's 50's music. The Suzy's crunch French toast lives up to the raves in other reviews. The muffins and pastries look exceptional. The food cooked to order. The service spot on. While I was here at 7 in the AM there were a surprising number of kids, maybe because the place is super kid friendly, giving them complimentary cup of fruit loops along with the usual crayons. read more

The diner is cute and homey with superb customer service! We ordered the diva omelette which had artichoke hearts, spinach, onions and roasted garlic. Sounded yummy on paper but it was served with the egg on top rather than having the ingredients blended into the egg. While each ingredient was good on it own, It just did not come together as one dish. The biscuit served on the side was humongous, freshly made and was decent. Had the worst experience! My wife who is a Filipina immigrant and I, African American visited this location because my wife wanted breakfast and we were in the vicinity. When we entered the diner it was a little busy, we placed our name on the wait list with only one ahead of us. We were seated due to there being several open tables. There was absolutely zero hospitality, no hello no smile. (Red Flag 1). We sat down and waited for our menus, which took a little while to get. When we finally received the menu my wife asked for coffee and I for water. After waiting a little longer my wife was brought here coffee and no water for me. I noticed an elderly woman that arrived after us sit at the table next to us, she was brought water right away. (2nd Red Flag). When I attempted to get the persons attention, he either didn't hear me or just ignored me. My wife and I sat and waited for someone to come and take our order. I was starting to sense something most African Americans have experienced and expressed this to my wife who has a lot of patience, she told me they were just busy, so we continued to wait. I sat there knowing what was going on and hoped that my wife was right. No one ever came to our table, my wife was hungry and complained that it seemed to be taking a long time just to order. (My wife is the hospitality manager at a reputable hotel. She finally decided it wasn't worth the wait. I already knew what we were experiencing and immediately got up to leave. My wife and I got into a heated argument about discrimination when I described what went down. Thanks for ruining my day. To have my wife stab me in the back trying to explain that we or maybe more to the point I, were discriminated against by this establishment. This is a popular local spot. There are always people waiting on the sidewalk , but the wait is never that long even though the place itself is small. They have a pretty huge menu- eggs, omelettes, skillets, waffles, pancakes, biscuits and gravy. I recently had the waffle with warm apple topping and I loved it. The apple topping was like eating the inside of an apple pie, plus you get eggs and bacon. I've also had their creme brûlée oatmeal, which is also delicious. I sat at the counter and ordered "Franks's Favorite" while my wife ordered "Erica's Special". here's the menu description for Frank's: Ground turkey, spinach, onions, roasted red peppers and mushrooms scrambled with eggs and topped with Parmesan cheese and fresh parsley. Choice of toast, muffins or biscuit ..11.50 -comes with a side of country potatoes. (I chose a muffin: lemon poppy) Frank's is essentially a scramble with Parmesan cheese sprinkled on top. The presentation of the meal is nothing to write home about, but I enjoyed the meal for not being to heavy. Other restaurants will load up a lot of cheese on top of the scramble. I did end up eating the scramble with some ketchup to give it a little flavor boost, specifically Heinz ketchup + table black pepper + Tabasco. The scramble overall was pretty good despite having to add a little something extra. The meal came with not one but two lemon poppy seed muffins, each a little smaller than a tennis ball. The first one tasted almost wet, either it was really dense or not fully baked. The second muffin had a texture more like cake, overall mediocre. I came in wanting something on the lighter side and I think Frank's Favorite was a good choice. I'd go back, but probably try something else that seems to be trending on yelp. I've been coming to Ocean Diner for more than 25 years and it is always good. They serve standard breakfast and lunch diner fare - burgers, fries, shakes, melts, bacon, eggs, omelets, etc.. Genuine comfort food that is prepared right then and now. The ingredients are fresh and without pretense. There is enough variation in the menu to make it a great place to meet friends with a variety of dietary needs, early for breakfast or a late breakfast/lunch. Personally, if I'm doing breakfast, I really enjoy the Bongo Scramble, otherwise I enjoy their salads (Cajun Chicken Salad, Trio Salad, etc) or sandwiches (Chicken Deluxe, Frisco Burger, etc.). If I'm really hungry and it is late in the day, I'll ask for the Salisbury Steak with mashed potatoes and gravy.....mmm. Note not all these are on the menu but you can ask and they will generally put together what you want if they have the ingredients. Don't forget the specials board as well. If your waistline can handle it, the deserts are also delicious albeit not low calorie! We never seem to have room but on those rare occasions that we partake, they don't disappoint. They are fresh and locally made so no factory cake/pies found here. It can be busy and weekends at noon are especially tough but they have have good coffee available outside to keep you going for the usually short wait for a table. In addition, if you are flying solo, they have seating/service at the counter. Note they close at 2pm on the weekdays so you need to think about getting there before they are about to close. As others have noted, parking is also tough with about 8 spaces behind and the rest is on street on Aviation. I didn't even get to try the food. I went in and put my name down to be seated (I was by myself). I waited about 15 mins and seen a few tables open up so I wasn't worried about the wait. A few people came in after me and put their name down after mine. I then see the guy come around and seat them and immediately seat the couple that just walked in. He was clearly looking at the list and looked at me. I guess the way I look and dressed said that I wasn't there to eat? Came here recently to celebrate a family birthday. I have heard great things about this place. I have come a few times and enjoyed my previous visits and item choices. This past visit, I was very disappointed. I ordered a salad, and it was terrible. The lettuce/romaine just seemed old. It seemed soggy and wilted, and cut way too small making it difficult to eat with a fork. The chicken was good, but seemed to be a very small portion for around $15. Everyone else's items looked good and sounds like everyone was pleased with their choices. The front bakery case looked a bit empty. We went around lunch time. We came here on a Sunday morning. I'm not a diner person but that Sunday I woke up wanting to eat a lot since I went a friend's birthday celebration the previous night and went to sleep late, so I decided to give in and try this place. The service was really good, there were a lot of customers but they didn't make us wait for long time. I ordered the veggie omelette that came with a side of two toasts. It was delicious, I ate all my food even the decaf coffee with cream was just perfect. I left very satisfied and I'm glad that my friend persuaded me to come. Check out the specials board each day but you can never go wrong with the menu items. The staff is always friendly and helpful. A real diner's diner complete with the requisite 40s motif on the walls. Despite its popularity the wait to get seated is never long but we do normally go after 10 am. Even parking is not that bad on Aviation. There is a small lot directly behind the place if you turn on Ocean Drive. Farthest we've had to walk is from the Trader Joe's parking lot. Sunday Breakfast and 100th review day! My quest for the best biscuits & gravy continues today. So we headed to Ocean Diner to give theirs a try. Place was jammin when we arrived and we scored bc a table just opened up. As we waited for out table to be cleaned off I was snapping some pics of their yummies in their dessert/pastry display case. Cupcakes, muffins, cinnamon rolls, crumbles, yummies galore! We were seated at our table and i was happy to see all the propaganda at the head of the table. I don't know why it does but table propaganda always makes me smile. Order in with biscuits & gravy to start. Our server brought them out right away and I was a little shocked at first. They were served on a plate with the gravy in a separate dish! What?! How is this?! Whhhhyyy?! So I took the napkin liner and butter packets off the plate, took the biscuits out of there separate dish and slopped that gravy all over. Now that's biscuits & gravy! Biscuits were square instead of the normal round. Gravy had bits of bacon in it instead of the normal sausage which was a nice surprise. After I got over the initial stoleof the everything separate and peppered them up they were quite yummy. They didn't win my top b&g spot but I will order them again. Food time! I went for their Waffle called "the works" and it was topped with bananas, whipped cream and their house made "almost famous" granola. Wooo eeee these were yum! I am always one to get some type of egg-omelet-scramble dish but these waffles may have converted me. Their "almost famous" granola should be famous! It was so good! They even package it to sell. I should have bought some. Waffle was cooked perfectly and was the right amour of soft, doughy and crisp top and bottom. The Works Waffle is a must try. Collers went for her usual bfast item which is the Cinnamon Roll French Toast. I stole a bite as she was cutting them into tiny pieces and they were yummers. I noticed one thing different about the cinnamon French toast today was that it was thinner slices than ones I have seen before. Colleen said she liked it more since it was thinner. Their coffee was yummy and I heard that they do their own roasting. They also sell their coffee to take home. Small size juice is smaaalllll so order a large. I had a chance to grab breakfast here again one weekend as I was getting my car washed across the street. The ambiance is chill and the service is still pretty prompt. This time I had the Greg's Special under the Healthy Options menu consisting of egg whites scrambled with onions, turkey, mushrooms, cilantro and tomatoes served with brown rice and your choice of toast or tortillas. I opted for corn tortillas and made myself mini breakfast tacos. I liked this dish a lot and would probably get it here from now on. The mixture of the ingredients along with their really good and spicy salsa was pretty satisfying. I was curious about the biscuits and so we asked our waiter for a sample and he accommodated. He brought us a small cake of the biscuit. It looked more like corn bread and was really dry and tasteless. I wouldn't order this and if I had a choice, I'd opt for toast or a muffin instead. I've been to many wannabe diners around LA. And none of them remind me of the true, down home, old fashioned establishments I spent so much time at growing up in Pennsylvania. Until now. She also tried one of their specialty coffee cakes which was delicious AND served warm (nice touch). I may have had a bite or four. They also give the option of fruit instead of home-fries, which is something I always dig. They also have breakfast appetizers. Seriously, that's a thing. And why is it not a thing everywhere, because it's kind of genius. But anyways, moving on... The service was good. It's simple folks dressed casually and not trying to sell you on a bunch of specials. They're just happy to take your order and chat a bit, plus keep that coffee mug nice and full. The diner itself is small, and is spaced out well enough that you won't feel overly cramped. There's a few chairs outside if you find yourself waiting, but they serve up the food so quickly that most people are in and out in a flash. So wait times don't ever seem too bad (I live close and never see a lot of people waiting). So if you love diners, and home style meals. This is the place to be. I've been living in the South Bay for a decade and 4 of those years have been in Hermosa Beach and I had never visited Ocean Diner for two reasons. 1- Although Ocean Diner isn't far from my house there were other breakfast spots closer. and 2-On weekends there is always a wait here. I found myself around on a weekday and meeting up with a friend around 11:30-12:00. She wanted breakfast and I wanted lunch so I suggest Ocean Diner very apprehensively since I had not been there before, but the serendipitous idea turned out to be a great one! Not only is Ocean Diner a local small business they support another local small business, Java Man, by serving up their coffee! So, as someone whose a proponent of supporting local small businesses I feel like having a meal at Ocean Diner hits two birds with one stone (I say hit because I feel 'kill two birds with one stone" sounds a tad bit vapid and is unnecessarily violent) I was shocked by the amount of choices offered at this small diner on their gigantic menu. No seriously the thing is ginormous! They could have made it half the size but added more pages. I liked that they serve brown rice here instead of home fries and there are numerous healthy options.
