Pretty good breakfast spot. The place was a little old and not too pleasant on the eyes (drab colors, old stools and tables etc) but it was decent enough. I ordered the banana caramel pecan waffle which came with eggs and bacon. The eggs tasted buttery and were a little wet for my preference. The bacon was extra crispy and snapped like chalk in my mouth. The waffle was tasty and huge...I could only stomach a quarter of it to be honest. My friend ordered an omelette with potatoes and I enjoyed that more than my meal. We also ordered a piece of the coffee cake which was a nice little treat. Overall the meal was decent. So I wanted an omelette but didn't see one with the ingredients I wanted, so I asked the server how much it would cost to make my own. He "joked" that it would be $25 but then said he would charge me $13.25 and proceeded to prompt me to add as many items as I wanted, whereupon I kept inquiring if it was okay to do so and he kept saying yes. So I basically threw in everything but the kitchen sink and ended up with a pretty packed omelette, which I largely enjoyed. However, upon receiving the check, I saw that I was charged extra for several items and not made aware about this when ordering despite checking in with the server several times! I asked the server about this and he said, "I just work here." Ugh, ya, you work there, therefore, you should be able to appropriately answer questions asked of you! Needless to say, his "joke" of charging me $25 for an omelette wasn't much of a joke - the total came to about $21!!!! For an omelette!!!! Nice family style Diner. Breakfast was good. Closed to my house.. and weekends breakfast is A-ok! Don't really mind the wait because they have a barrel coffee outside to help yourself with the free coffee while waiting. That was the coolest part!! Great business idea! The cons- I don't think they have a parking lot, we had to park on the street which is not too bad because there are always spaces to park on Aviation. If you come at summer time, It is too hot to eat inside.. No air conditioning.. Also I didn't give them more then 3 star is because service is not really good. What an awful experience Half of our order was received 5 min after the other half of the table got it, so half the food was cold by the time everyone had their plate. Drinks were never refilled, even upon request. It took us 5 minutes to get syrup for pancakes. Every other restaurant that I know of serves syrup WITH pancakes, not make the customer beg and wait for it. Finally, the waiter brought the check without asking if we wanted it split. When we tried explaining how to split the bill (just by our individual entrees) he told us that next time we better just tell him ahead of time, very snarky. Will not be returning. Why has this place not been on Diners, Drive ins and Dives yet? If this isn't a DDD kind of place I don't know what it is. It even says "Diner" in its name and half the places on that show don't even qualify as any of the 3 parts of the name. Anyways, I've been meaning to come here for a while and finally made it. First thing I noticed was how friendly people were. It's a classic beach community kind of place with the owner (or who I assumed to be the owner) talking to people and I overheard him saying "I haven't seen you here in a while." You know it's a cool place when they start remembering you and you build a rapport with them. The next thing I noticed was the size of the menu. Lot of options. Lots of great choices. I knew I wanted an omelette even though the cinnamon roll french toast looked intriguing. It's just hard for me to stomach something too sweet in the mornings sometimes. I ended up going for the veggie omelette, which came with fresh seasonal veggies. It was great. I liked the way they did it...they pretty much had the cooked egg part of it but then piled on the veggies on top that were still crisp...almost like a stir fry. I appreciated it. What was really a hit though was "The Morning After" that my friend got. It was a skillet with chorizo, eggs, potatoes, avocado and it was great. I don't know if it'll cure hangover, but it makes a great effort. We also tried the muffins and biscuits that came on the side and these sides are very generous...you get 2 HUGE biscuits that are very light...you could down it no problem. The homemade banana muffins were also quite enjoyable. It had a different, lighter texture that I wasn't expecting. I don't know if they used cake flour or what, but I liked it. Prices are reasonable...about par for the course. I would definitely go back and would even dare to say it's my new go-to breakfast spot in the south bay. Got in right away and enjoyed the immediate cup of coffee. Really friendly staff and cool toasters and beach stuff hanging on the walls. My friend had the chili omelet which was really good, but chili in the morning is a bit adventurous if you know what I mean. I dont know what happened, but I ended up eating at Ocean Diner like 4-5 times in the last month. I'm a breakfast and cheese-aholic, so there I said it. So I can heartily recommend the breakfast skillet like the Cabo-Wabo. It was flavorful without being "three alarm spicy", but there's tabasco and other hot sauces available if you wanna bump it up. Side note: I don't necessarily recommend the fish tacos here. They do them their own way, with cheese and lots of guac, but the fish was kind of rubbery and I don't know... just not my dish of choice for Ocean Diner. Oreo Mint Shake - Umm- dayum. I cant believe I'm telling you about all the ways I 'comforted' myself this last month as if Yelp were paying me or somethin! Just trust me. Rich and thick. Now for the pieces-de-resistance: The grilled cheese menu (9 variations!) - I had the Bon Appetite (five stars) and the Italian (4 stars, wish it was a little thicker, with more cheese). Plenty of other diners have mentioned these so I won't belabor the point. The last dish.. I think I might dream about. I dont know who Wanda is, but the Wanda's Mac and Cheese is Killer! It's basically a nice thick creamy mac and cheese with plentiful bacon and diced tomato added, and topped with parmesan. Memorable for me. I'll definitely get this one again. Also the salads that I had served before fish tacos and the mac-n-cheese are very fresh and lovely. Nice greens, not just a bunch of iceberg lettuce pieces. I've had some lame salads at diners, haven't you? It's worth mentioning. The servers all seem very pleasant here, they're quick to refill my coffee, and weekdays I've been in Ocean Diner and had a table for four to myself no problems chillin out. Came here a few weeks ago so I can't remember what everyone ate but I do remember that we enjoyed it. The coffee was ok but had to be switched out when the heavy cream curdled in our coffee's. They got me to like country gravy. Why I didn't already like country gravy? Because everywhere else makes it too milky so it tastes like hot peppery cream. This was one of the first places my now husband took me when we were first "talking" a couple years ago. We have been coming here for breakfast/brunch somewhat regularly ever since! Delicious breakfast food, friendly staff, and adorable diner =) Everything we've had is solid; hubby loves the skillets & omelets (ask for salsa!). We even came on a random night when we were craving dessert and ended up getting yummy pie & a pumpkin cheesecake milk shake... pretty guilty but oh so decadent. Parking isn't awesome but we've never had a problem. There is usually street parking pretty close by if the lot is full. When the line gets long they even provide coffee outside. First Time I ate at this place it was very good. This time not so good I think the help were already out the door(we got there at 2:15 PM) because the service stunk and the food was BELOW average. Came here the other day before hitting up Hermosa beach. I knew I was in the right spot from the giant sign on the window proudly stating that they have 4 stars on Yelp. Looking at the pictures of the place I knew that I wouldnt be dissapointed with the portion sizes. I got the biscuits and gravy skillet and my friend got a special breakfast burrito. It's a cute little diner but holy lord it's lively! The five-stars is for the service honestly. I just had pancakes and bacon, so I can't really rate the food altogether. The menu is pretty creative. The servers were always on their feet, I have never seen a sense of urgency before. The community is nice, and a majority are friendly. I'd recommend for a simple breakfast, nothing fancy. My family and I came here for breakfast this past weekend. I ordered Frank's favorite. The meal consists of ground turkey, spinach, onions, red peppers, mushrooms scrambled with eggs and topped off with parmesan cheese. The food was bland for my taste. Parking is terrible. There is a teeny tiny lot behind the diner, otherwise street parking is available. Even street parking is a challenge, because this place is busy. I have driven past here a few times and there are always people waiting outside to be seated. I'm guessing the hotel next door helps keep this place full of customers. Service was excellent. When you order your breakfast you can chose from potatoes, fruit and muffins. Get the muffins. They have a new muffin everyday and you get 2 of them. Holy crap. What am I gonna do with these muffins!? They have the MOST unique omelets. Crazy names, and stuffed with garlic, spinach, tomatoes, avocados, mushroom, bacon. Whatever you want, healthy or not they got a omlet for you. Omelets are about $8.00-$9.00 but come with a side and those muffins. They have a ton of 'healthy' breakfast opions, fruit, egg whites etc, crap I don't eat. I think a diner has a great service when they fill your coffee cup frequently and the food comes out pretty quickly. All that happened. I think hype killed this place for me. After hearing all the good things about this place, Leonard W. and I came here one night since we were craving breakfast foods. I opted for the Cinnamon Roll French Toast with bacon as my sides since that's something you don't see everyday. It's pretty much a cinnamon roll sliced thin into pieces, dipped in egg batter and then pan fried. The cinnamon roll itself.. was nothing spectacular. If you didn't tell me it was cinnamon roll, I probably would've thought it was French toast dusted with cinnamon. It's a good French toast but to be honest I was expecting something much more decadent when it came. Nonetheless, it was good, but I just may prefer a regular French toast. Also tried their Kapiko's Skillet. That's a good hearty breakfast. Lots of good veggies and the side of biscuit + gravy is delicious. Their gravy is extremely rich and it'll make you feel happy. Also got their chili fries. Pretty average for diner. They also have plenty of healthy options for breakfast, but healthy dinner ain't really my thang! Cool WWII decor gives it a retro feel to the whole place. There's a small parking lot in the back as well but most likely you'll have to find street parking somewhere. Ocean Diner is a solid place to eat, and I had an interesting Creme Brulee Waffle with Apples, and it tasted like a delicious apple pie desert. The Bacon was done well, nice and crisp with an above average generous portion compared to most breakfast servings. The service is nice and location is beautiful. We headed here today because we had such a positive experience last time. Still living up to expectations. Portions are huge-- a shake is served with the "extra", and it's almost a whole second shake; biscuits and gravy are enormous, and my daughter really liked the gravy. She also ordered eggs over easy and they were perfect--still runny. My son had the breakfast sandwich and substitutions were not a problem (my son asked for bread instead of English muffin and fruit instead of potatoes). He ate the whole thing, and that means it was really tasty. I had the triple decker BLT and it was perfect (mayo O/S); the tomatoes were the only negative --from a small tomato, but it was okay. Bacon wrapped as crisp and lettuce was fresh (crunchy) and not limp. Coffee was ample. The service is great here--they still use a team approach and that means they are very attentive to our needs because someone is always passing by the table and seeing if we need anything. Only down side to this place is that they don't serve corned beef hash--my go-to breakfast order on the weekend. (And parking continues to be a nightmare). I tried this place with Duke C. after hitting up the 24 hr fitness up the street, so needless to say we came pretty close to closing time. Duke was the one who mentioned this place having a Cinnamon Roll french toast, and our imaginations went nuts. I was envisioning a cinnabun roll smushed flat so it got a crispy layer on it and that this dish would rock my world. But i was hungry so I got the Kapiko skillet. The food comes out and i was like nice my skillet seems pretty hearty and yes got a side of biscuits also. I see Duke's Cinnamon Roll French Toast and at that moment i knew the dream in him had died. The french toast paled in comparison to what I had ordered. Well back to my skillet. The skillet was great, everything tasted fresh and not as oily and gross as Denny's skillets usually are (but i get the meat lovers there so it doesnt help) I devoured my biscuits which were nice and soft and the gravy was great. I used that and poured it over my skillet and just went to town. We also had an order of chili cheese fries, but it wasnt amazeballs or anything, it was average and did its duty. I cant fault them because they are a breakfast diner type and you only get chili cheese fries at those burger joints. Overall this place is a good place for breakfast items and has good portions for food. I would give this place a solid 3.5 stars, just because the prices are a little high and your experience can vary. The service was great and friendly so no knock there either. It just seemed a little expensive but not too bad. Just try the place and review it since the reviews do seem mixed. PS.
