Bad bad bad service. The servers don't care if you have a good experience or not. Todd B and Alia G, below, have probably summed it up the best. However, that being said, they do serve excellent Waffle Sundae. I have had it twice...the first time was an amazing experience and I kept craving it till many days after. The second time, however, the waffle was soft, soggy and broken off under the weight of the icecream... They did replace it when we pointed it out but the server did not seem very happy having to do the needful despite the fact that we were the only people in the diner at that time (weekday afternoon). The ambiance is nice...a very diner-y feel to it....Its a tiny place, a bit cramped....they have newspaper clippings and old models of toasters on the walls. The parking is tricky as the place is right on Aviation Blvd... so you have to park in the lot behind the building. They do have a coffee pot outside for people waiting to get in. read more

Was undercooked, got the wrong toast, had to pay extra for fruit instead of potatoes, waiter never cleared our table or check on us, paid $25.35 for one omelette coffee and juice! overall bad service and over priced. Was really excited to try Ocean Diner because there are always people waiting outside. We ordered Suzy's Crunchy French Toast and the Cabo Wabo skillet. The Cabo Wabo skillet was decent, but it was inconsistent in its temperature- parts of it were cold and other parts were warm. Additionally, the French toast was not warm and could have used more flavor. The service was friendly, and the wait to be seated was around 20-30 minutes on a Sunday, early afternoon. read more

Started my morning here at almost opening waiting for a friend who was stuck in traffic! Was greeted with a cup of coffee and the first thing I noticed was the pies in the front! Parking was easy as it was early. The menu was large and I knew it was a good choice because it has everything from sweet, savory, healthy to heavy! I got a breakfast sandwich with turkey sausage and a side of fruit. My friend got a waffle with potatoes and sausage. We first ventured to Ocean Diner because of a Living Social coupon that we purchased, but have been back! The food is awesome, and there is truly something for everyone. The boyfriend and I make a point of ordering something different each time and then sharing so as to experience more of the delicious offerings. The home made daily flavors of muffins are like deserts, so good! The scrambles creative and satisfying, the CA Enchilada was one of the best breakfast meals served with tasty salsa that had just enough heat, sour cream and homemade guacamole (which is not my cup of tea but the boyfriend loved). He had one of the specials, which was served with homemade turkey sausage (glorious!) and the muffin of the day. The ambiance can be a little crazy, loud, crowded, hectic, but that's mostly early-ish on the weekends so if you're going later more for a brunch it should be fine, we're normally seated with minimal wait time. It's cute and cozy and we're usually served and greeted right away. Haven't had a problem with food not coming out together, coffee is kept fresh and water glasses filled. My hubby and I met up with some family at the Ocean Diner this morning for brunch. It was busy, but that's too be expected at 11am on Sunday. Over all it was ok- I would give 5 stars for the blueberry pancakes and the OJ was fresh squeezed! Other than that- everything was just ok. Our food didn't come out all together and we had to remind our server a few times to bring water to the table. The order also was missing a couple items. Our server made the nicest attempts to remedy everything, so I think it was mainly a kitchen issue- especially since my eggs came out cold. All in all, it was by no means terrible but I won't make any effort to eat there again soon. read more

I drive by this several times. It's cute inside and that's about it. I order the chicken deluxe chicken pound thin and cooked on a griddle until its dry. Then the sandwich is so spread out that its unmanageable to eat. No seasoning at all on the chicken and for $11.25 for chicken sandwich way over priced for what you get . Also love watching the wait staff eat as well and no service until its time to drop the check and then ask oh how was everything. No customer service. I have rarely gone to a place that everything on my plate was an absolute pleasure to eat. This is by far one of the best dining experiences I've had on Hermosa Beach. The diner has a kind of old school 60s look with an updated and healthy menu. I had the salmon with egg whites and pan fried potatoes. The only problem I had is that I ate it all to quickly and I'm left wanting more. Great job ocean diner! We will be seeing each other again very soon. read more

I moved to Hermoso beach from Ohio just to eat here. When visiting California in the past my cousin would alway bring me here for breakfast. Now I live here and can't get enough. My favorite diner in the South Bay, hands down! An old friend of mine showed me Ocean diner about 5 years back and I was hooked from the first visit. A tiny little diner that transports you back in time to an era when it was nothing but laid back beach goers on this West Coast before it got infiltrated with millions of other people. You can't go wrong with an omelet here. They're huge, have tons of whatever ingredients you choose and taste amazing! Anytime I order one I usually split it with my boyfriend or take it home. I usually don't eat eggs later but they actually keep pretty well for that day. If you get any plate with biscuits you gotta spend the extra buck and smother them in gravy! The biscuits are amazing on their own but the country gravy is out-of-this-world good! Totally worth the buck and you'll thank me later. A few of the other prizes on the menu (although you can't go wrong ordering anything): Sullivan's Scramble, The Morning After, Frank's Favorite and the California Enchilada. Went to this family run cute little diner with my friend who lives down the block. The food is basic breakfast and lunch food but came out in a flash. We were seated after about 20 minutes but it was a busy Sunday morning. They have free coffee and chairs outside for the customers waiting to be sat. The service was good though quick. The owner or manager was visible and closed out our bill for us. I like family run restaurants so I would go back next time I am in Hermosa. read more

My father in law always has eyes out for nostalgic 50s style diners. However, it sometimes leads us to questionable places, usually overly-greasy spoons with suspicious hygiene habits. But this place is different. My husband and I were craving an all-American beach breakfast last week - maybe huevos rancheros or body building pancakes. We heard about Ocean Diner from a friend who assured us it was at least definitely clean. The first thing we noticed upon walking in was the bright light coming in from the large windows, the world war 2 era framed posters on the wall, and the impressive collection of antique toasters. It was spotless and we could smell the aroma of baked goods. We were greeted by smiling waiters who told us to sit wherever. The place was packed with energetic, sunny beach folk on a Tuesday morning. I'll keep it short - everything we ordered was perfectly executed, the eggs had perfect yolks, the fruit was fresh, and the food was tasty. I finished my whole meal which I never do at diners. Wow, I came her while my lady was getting her hair did, about a few blocks away. It's been yelped so... ok I get there n' it's like short of 3 pm. It's not busy at all, but when I walk in, the gentlemen behind the counter greet me, maybe cuz weiz hommies. I extend salutations in spanish, cuz I love to speak spanish to my restaurant brethren. So everything goes on w/o a hitch. I get coffee, GOOD AZZ coffee, by the way, (I believe they also have another spot, not to far, that deals out strictly joe n' pastries, hence the G'.A. coffee!!) So I proceed to look over the menu to see what gets me going. Pretty interesting selections, I like that they offer signature plates molded after some of the regulars' likes. But today I'm not feeling to adventures, so I opt for the P.O.E. (plain ol' eggs) it comes w/ 2 eggs, pa-taters, and biscuit. Little did I know, that I was about to have a life altering exper.! Now, it wasn't the eggs or taters, cuz after all, 93 % of the times you really can't F' up eggs !! and taters,well they don't look good you don't eat 'em. BUT THE BISQUIT...that biscuit was flippin' awesome !! Now I might get my arse handed to me by folk down south for saying it, but it's true! I was raised in SoCal, so my biscuit n' grits knowledge and experience is a bit lacking, but honestly this biscuit was the real deal. --THE BISCUIT : 1.) The Appearance: Frankly, I looks like a mound of batter frozen n' cooked in time. It seems to be symmetrically cut down the middle, Bummer...cuz that means I would've had more. 2.) The Texture: Now biscuits generally have that homicidal thing going on, you know, you bite a biscuit and in 2 chews you're fighting for dear life just to breath(KFC) !! Well not w/ this one, this one was kind, its slightly hard skin was longing to be broken into little pieces promising just to be yours egging you on to actually enjoy it's airy composition. 3.) The Taste: Euphoric...It's buttery accent was pronounced but not like eating a stick o' butter, its flaky pieces just offered promises of continued satisfaction. And for added bonus, it did not stick to the roof of my mouth. All in all, the place, nice, my experience here, unforgettable. I've been driving by Ocean Diner for years and I finally made it in for breakfast! The lines can get long for breakfast/brunch on the weekends so earlier is better. We showed up around 9 on a sunday and the wait was only 10/15 minutes. There were so many items that sound good, it was tough to choose! I ended up getting the breakfast enchiladas which come with a side of home fries. I ate every bite! I also tried a bite of my husbands granola french toast and it was delicious! They server breakfast all day, so you can always come by in the evening to get your breakfast fix. When I walked by on saturday night it didn't seem like there was a single diner in there which is a stark contrast to the line of people waiting outside in the morning! read more

They have excellent homemade granola (I'm a granola aficionado-I know my granola) and lots of different baked goods in the counter. Their waffles and granola French toast are some of my favorites. This place was really cute and charming. Thats my nice way of saying the place is tiny. One perk is its close proximity to the beach so it has a nice "beachy" atmosphere. It is hot as Hades in here so be sure to dress appropriatey in warm weather. There are breakfast and lunch specials served from 6 AM to 3 PM. So I have been coming here for years and the service has always sucked ( unless the owner himself serves you) i don't know why I gave these guys another chance but i did.. I ordered an omellete and right away I could tell the egg was premade and just filled and warmed when I ordered it.. The cheese wasn't even melted.. The potatoes were warm but completley burnt black on one side and tasted like crap... my toast came late.. my daughters pancakes were fine though. and the only reason i gave them 2 stars is because .. 1 the owner once gave my daughter a cupcake and he is really nice and 2 the bus boy refilled my coffee like 5 times and it was delicious.. read more

Being from NJ (the unofficial diner Capitol) I love seeing diners during my travels. After an 8 hour overnight flight my husband and I were not only starving but exhausted. So I just wanted to eat and run. I was surprised at the authentic feel of the diner and actually enjoyed our stay during lunch. We came on a Saturday around 1 pm sometime. Parked in back. Sat right down, no wait at all as there were plenty of seats available. It was quaint and felt clean. We were greeted and instructed to seat ourselves (in NJ someone always seats you) probably because I had a confused look on my face. I thought the stools around the counter were cute and added to the charm of the place. The decor was fun and vintage feeling. The menu had plenty of options ( loved the expansive option for breakfast). We both ordered a grilled chicken sandwich (I forget the name but mine had guacamole and was on a roll & my husbands was on sourdough and had avocado) they both were a really good size and the chicken wasn't dry. The bacon was perfectly crisp. And they both were served with large serving of fries (but we had an option to substitute for something else). We didn't order dessert but the dessert case looked enticing. The only thing that would make this place better is if it were open 24 hours :-) read more

i've only been here a couple times, but i've been craving it for a while! they have an extensive breakfast menu, so if you're a breakfast person, or at least in the mood for breakfast, this is a great place. i don't normally go for sweet items at breakfast time, but when i read the vanilla french toast description on the menu, i couldn't help myself. it was a stuffed french toast, and was pretty good. but being someone who doesn't like a lot of sweets in the morning, i will probably only get this again if i'm really craving it. don't get me wrong, it was awesome. but with such a large portion, this was just too much sweet for me. the egg dishes are very good. i'd totally order the tortilla scramble again and again. worst things about this place are the lack of parking and it can be crowded, especially on weekends. but braving those two things to come here are totally worth it. read more
