I've come here since I was in my late teens, and am now 34. My family happens to know the owner. The food overall is good, with a few plates that are my favorite. There are even times I'll drive from Culver City, where I now live, to eat here. My experience has been that as long as I am happy with my meal then the service is courteous, otherwise I get some major attitude. This surprised me, since I've always loved my meals here, which showed since I've ordered the same thing every time I've been here, and many times I've even popped in just for the coffee. The same people always serve on me, and it is clear they know me. Today I had a bit different of an experience, which was actually similar to another time I ate here, about 8 years ago. So, today I decided to order something new, and after a few bites I knew it was not for me. In my opinion, the gravy had no taste, and I could not see myself finishing this meal. This happens to everyone at times, I'm sure, and there is never any reason for the wait staff to personalize this kind of rare occurrence, especially that I was very polite, graceful and tactful when I quietly let them know the issue, and asked if I could please order something else instead. The manager just stood there and made faces at me, resistant to take the plate. I was shocked, and given that it was busy, I quietly let him know that I really could not eat this meal, and would like to order something I've had before that I know I like. The last thing I wanted to do was start getting looks from others because he refused to take the plate. He finally rolled his eyes and took the plate. A bit uncomfortable at this point, and only staying because I had already gotten my drink and ate some of the biscuit that came with the meal, I felt I should stay and pay for a meal. Within minutes after the plate was taken, I knew what I wanted to order instead, and sat with my hands folded to signal I had made a decision and was ready to order, even making eye contact with the waiters. To my further surprise, the waiters did EVERYTHING they could to ignore me, making sure to give extra attention to the people around me just to show me how ostracized I've now become. This went on for at least ten minutes. A waiter finally came to take my second order and was hesitant to allow me to order a different meal that was the same as the one I've returned with the exception of a different gravy. I politely and calmly let him know that I've had this meal before and liked it. He insisted that its mashed potatoes with a brown gravy and vegetables and breaded chicken which is the same thing as what I just returned. I finally said "look, I never complained about the mashed potatoes, veggies or breaded chicken, its what I'm clearly in the mood for. It's the white gravy on the first dish I ordered that tastes like cardboard and I'm fine with the brown gravy on the dish I would like instead. I've had it before," I said a bit sternly. He finally took my order and the entire time I've waited for my meal the cooks gave me very hard, aggressive looks from the kitchen window since I was sitting at a table directly across. Praying to god they don't mess with my food, I sat politely and promised myself this would be the last time I eat here for a loooooooong time. This was a very uncomfortable experience for me because they know I am a frequent customer. I even had to ask the waiter in passing if I could get more ranch dressing for my chicken since he refused to check up on me the entire time. He did not even stop, so I rushed my request as he briskly glanced at me from the corner of his eye and murmured something that resembled a yes. I've never been treated so rudely. I had no idea I'm apparently required to eat a meal that, to me, tastes like cardboard, especially when I'm a regular here and it costs almost $16. Case and point: if you eat at Ocean Dinner, be sure to order what you are 100% positive you'll like or else get ready to be treated like trash. read more
