1st impression of this place was the unusual way they call their clients who are on the waiting list. Poor those hostesses who screamed out of their lungs to their customers. I'm sure microphone are cheap for the owner to invest on it. It's super annoying to stand there for at least 30min wait and hear those ladies screamed with such an unpleasant voice. Food is typical dim sum area nothing out of ordinary and price range is not cheaper than other place in town. The only benefits of this place is they do have a large space. I'm only updating my review because they moved the restaurant from the 2nd floor down to the 1st. However, the food and the service are pretty much the same as before. The new floor looks much updated and a lot brighter than the 2nd floor location. If you've had dim sum, then you already know the drill. They have a bunch of people pushing carts with food on the carts. When they pass your table, you pick whichever food you want and they'll stamp the price sheet to tally up when you're done. The food is decent. And the service are just okay since the majority of the people who push the carts don't really speak English so asking questions about the food they're serving could be challenging. I also have to note that this restaurant doesn't get as packed as it used to be many years ago. I guess since there are now a lot more Dim Sum choices in Houston. This restaurant is personally not my first preference since I'd rather go to one of those Dim Sum restaurants where you actually order the food you want instead of waiting for someone to pass by. However, one of my friends from out of town loves this place and always dines here whenever she's in town, so I come here whenever she's in town. read more

Dim Sum's the name, Dim Sum's the game. If you finally have gotten tired of the "other place" down the road a block then this could possibly be a better alternative for you. This restaurant is located at the west end of the Hong Kong City mall, if you passed this and didn't see it then you are not driving with your prescripted glasses on or you are trying to dodge the many pseudo driver licensed people that care not where and how you get hit with their vehicles. Getting into the parking lot from the opposite side of the road is a nightmare, I 'm sure you know what I am talking about. As you walk towards the door you will notice little heads peeping out of the water and an occasional oval shadow lurking in the waters on each side, don't be alarmed, they're just the turtles and they are safe from you consuming them on the menu. 2.5 stars, all for service and ambiance. This was very disappointing, because it was recommended by the Facebook group "Chow Down in Chinatown" as the best dim sum in Houston. Perhaps? But way beneath the quality of dim sum on the west and east coasts. The service and ambiance is exquisite (though you order from a menu, rather than from carts), but the food was awful. My group ordered eight dishes, I tried seven of them, and every single one was subpar and I didn't want to finish it. Mostly bland; no sense of ginger or pepper or garlic or any savoriness. On entering we were greeted immediately and had to wait about 10 minutes as there were a few groups ahead of us! The place is beautiful on the inside and huge! We've come here for dim sum a couple times and on this last visit on a Sunday, I noticed all the dim sum we ordered from the menu were either microwaved or barely steamed. I think the dishes were either previously frozen or from the day before. They were not warmed through. The dim sum off the carts were better, more hot and fresh, but there wasn't much selection: hao gao, shui mai, spareribs, chicken feet, rice noodle rolls, and some pastry items. That's about all we saw coming around. The service was really good, but still, I don't think we'll be back. read more

Service is excellent here. But that's about where the excellence stops. Part of one of those large Chinatown shopping areas, you'll definitely be able to find a spot. How far it is just depends on how patient you're willing to be. The walkway to the restaurant passes over an artificial lake of sorts. When I was young this used to be clean and filled with koi fish - but no longer. The fountains aren't turned on (or not functioning at all) and large amount of debris have gathered in icky piles on the surface. The water is a murky green and an unappetizing start to your journey. Inside things are much nicer. Well lit with large windows, and nice chairs and tables that look relatively new and untouched (they're white). Service, as I mentioned previously, is prompt and sweet. Wait time for 2 people was less than 5 minutes on a weekend around 1pm. Pork Shumai - topped with fish eggs that are hard and crusty. It felt like I was eating shumai with sprinkles on it. Ruined the whole effect. Shrimp Dumpling (har gow) - flavorfless. Pan Fried Pot Sticker - served literally cold, less than room temperature. Ginseng and Shrimp Dumpling - expensive, basically just har gow in a bowl of ginseng-flavored water. Strange, also cold, and flavorless. We had ordered more but cancelled the rest and left. I came here right after a long drive to Houston so I was basically starving. The outside of the restaurant is really pretty, and the bright lights reflecting off the water outside looks really nice at night. There were a bunch of leaves and other debris in the water at some parts but that didn't really matter to me. The interior is gorgeous, modern, and most importantly clean. I came during a weekend dinner with my girlfriend and we wanted dimsum so we had to order off of the menu instead of carts. Our waiter was fast and friendly enough, and he never had any mistakes with our orders. The other waitstaff was great as well. Our food came out a little bit slow, but all was forgiven once I started eating. The classic shumai, hargow, and turnip cake were all delicious but my favorite was the rice noodle roll with fried breadstick (zhaliang). The dough was crispy and wasn't stale at all, which was a problem I saw at a lot of other dimsum places. The rice noodles were soft but not mushy. An august institution that has been serving Chinese dim sum and seafood for over 20 years. Despite the knowledge that you're in one of the infinite shopping plazas in the concrete jungle that is Houston, you can't help feeling a sense of escape as you cross the bridge leading up to the towering building, flanked by man-made ponds studded with lily pads. The building is gigantic and was renovated in 2018; the dining room on the first floor now boasts 65 tables with the upstairs reserved for private events and parties. There can be a long wait, particularly on weekends, so I would recommend putting your name down early and perhaps exploring Hong Kong Food Market in the same complex, which is an adventure in itself. The dim sum is served in both traditional and modern style, meaning you can mark whatever you want on a sheet of paper that is subsequently whisked away by the waitstaff, and/or simply wave over the folks pushing around carts bearing all kinds of goodies. One perhaps non-traditional component is that the service was actually awesome - friendly and efficient. You'll find the majority of standard dim sum fare here, at reasonable prices. Since I'll butcher the original Chinese terms, I'll stick with English colloquialisms to list my favorites: the steamed salted egg lava bao (creamy and savory-sweet), rice noodle rolls with BBQ pork, shrimp and pork shumai, steamed sticky rice wrapped in a lotus leaf (had a subtle tea-like flavor), pan-fried turnip cakes (turnip is such an underrated root vegetable), and the roast duck rice noodle rolls. The scallop dumplings were a bit too mild, the soup dumplings were so-so, and we didn't particularly enjoy the fried taro puffs. Don't be afraid to experiment and try different things, especially if you're in a bigger group! Close to 11:00 am on New Years Even(which was a Sunday this year) we decided to get dim sum and since I wanted cart service I decided to go to one of the larger venues, which in this case was Ocean Palace. Overall, I was satisfied. Arrived shortly before noon and was told there would be at least a 45 minute--1hour wait---considering the day (New Years eve) and the people milling around outside, that appeared reasonable. Ocean Palace is located in an Asian shopping center/mall with its other big anchor being a large grocery store. So, we were able to walk around and shop/window shop while waiting---it took 75-89 minutes before we were seated which I do not think was unreasonable considering g the day. While other recent posts complain about service and quality of food, this writer has no quarrel llc with either. Please note we had had dim sum at a different establishment a few days prior and there was no comparison which one was better---it was Ocean Palace. We ordered the basics--har gow and soy mai--as well as some other regular items---nothing we got tasted old or bad. Actually it was all fresh and the few fried items we tried had a light colored batter which suggests to me that they used fresh grease or change the grease regularly. We also ordered a noodle dish and compared to some of the Chinese restaurants and establishments I have been to recently we were provided a de Kent sized portion although there was an over abundance of sprouts. Anyway, nothing was served which would deter a return. Price was reasonable in my estimation. Service was above average in my estimation---and all wait staff was busy---there was a full room of diners to keep them but that was to be expected. I suspect there may be other dim sum places which are less crowded and have tastier food however there are also plenty of places whose quality is inferior to that of this establishment. The truffle offerings as listed in their grand reopening description enticed me to bring my family to try out the new Ocean Palace. The decor looked pretty standard though I can see the modernization after looking through earlier pictures. The service here was hit or miss - our server never mentioned that he didn't speak Cantonese, so my parents would keep talking to him in Canto as he went off and acted like he understood. Eventually, we figured it out and spoke to him in English. Most of the sweet ladies pushing the carts spoke Cantonese and very highly attentive in making sure we got everything we wanted to order. 1. Truffle shu mai: really yummy and the heart cut outs of the truffle were cute though they were only on 2 of the 4. 2. Truffle xio long bao: very lackluster - I honestly wouldn't recommend ordering this at all. The presentation to have each in its individual spoon was cute, but the bao stuck to the spoon and didn't have much soup anyway, thereby removing the need for a spoon at all. The truffle element to these was the same slice that was on top of the shu mai - there was no other incorporation of the truffle besides any residual taste from it that leeched into the soup. 3. Shaking beef: very very tender and highly flavorful. Low in quantity. 4. Cheung fun with fried crullers: tasted fresh and visually appealing with the green onion and orange stuff in the wrapping. Served with a side of tahini/sesame sauce - note: this restaurant doesn't have an hoisin sauce. 5. Lai wong bao: based custard bun with the shape of a buo lo bao on top but with a cupcake base that was much too dense. Also not at all hot but the filling was still runny. read more

This place has a lot of mix reviews so I was a bit ehh on coming here, it's been a long time since I've had some Dim Sum so I wanted to order some & its 5 minutes from my house. I came here right when it opened at 10am hoping that my food will come out fresh & hot and I'll tell you this I was not disappointed. The hostess Katelyn was very kind & helpful and she recommended me some items that I ended up getting. I ordered the fried crab claw, shrimp with chive dumplings & shrimp dumplings. I was going to get more but I don't think I'll be able to finish it all so I ended up just getting three items. The fried crab claw was great & you can tell it just came out the fryer, I took a bite and you can see the steam coming out; I was very satisfied on the sizes of my fried crab claw. My shrimp with chive dumplings & shrimp dumplings were pretty good, they were generous by putting a big chunk of shrimp inside my dumplings. After their renovation in 2018, this is our current go-to place for dim sum in Houston. Their dim sum used to be in the hall upstairs. However, it has been moved downstairs after their renovation. This restaurant has the traditional dim sum experience where various carts with different items gets pushed around the restaurant. Point at something you like and it's yours (for a reasonable price.) There is a paper pad on your table that gets stamped whenever you order something. Some things to try: - Chicken feet: YOLO, but spit out the bones - Steamed custard cream bao: Fluffy, sweet and tasty - Sticky rice with meat in lotus leaf: The glutinous rice within is packed with flavor infused from the leaf. Do not eat the leaf though; this is not a dolma. For those that are not well verse in this form of cuisine, they have a nice printed menu with photos and descriptions in English. We came here on a Sunday morning and it was PACKED, as expected. Our wait time was about 45 minutes. I've really only had the dim sum here. Honestly, it's just your standard dim sum, to me. They do still offer the rolling carts but when I came with my group last time, we just checked everything that we wanted off of the paper and had them bring it all out for us instead. They did get some of our order wrong though because the server started circling items that are not found on the cart and I think it confused someone else and they assumed that all of the circle items were what we wanted to order. We had to correct that and the servers kept bringing us orders that we did not mark ourselves. My other complaint is that service was a little slow in terms of us trying to get their attention for correcting our order, getting our waters refilled, and getting our bill. It was a little frustrating to us. It was super busy though, so I get it. Other than that, it's a great place for dim sum in a big group because they have large round tables! The dim sum itself was pretty good. Have been craving dimsum since moving to Dallas from New York and nothing in Dallas has satisfied that craving yet. Visiting Houston, this place did the trick. It still isnt NYC dimsum, but the ingredients are fresh and they get most of the flavors right. We tried a ton off their menu. Some of my recommendations would be the char siu baos, fried taro puffs, shrimp rice rolls, pork spare ribs, sticky rice. Also, dimsum is often incredibly oily and heavy but this place was not. We did also order a whole peking duck, which I thought was overcooked and dry which was disappointing. The ladies who served us were actually really nice. They got us everything we asked for, chased down the cart ladies to get us what we needed, and refilled our waters and teas. For a dimsum chinese restaurant, the inside is actually really clean and relatively spread out. The wait on a Sunday is crazy though, so have someone get here early to put their name down. read more

We went to this restaurant after we heard they remodeled the restaurant. We felt soooo disappointed because there were 2 dishes never came out due to their computer was broken and no one followed up on our order. They also have pushing carts to serve some dimsums. But they were cold. The worse part is I found they increased the tips trying con us. I gave them 17.67%. I know it's not good. But I tipped them by the services we received. Ocean Palace has been in Bellaire for years, but the recent renovations have made this long time staple into a new favorite! Ocean Palace has definitely gone up in quality since their renovation, and it might even be the best dim sum in Houston now. The renovations gave this place a much needed facelift. The décor is much more modern and well lit. Dim sum is now served everyday all day, but they only have the dim sum carts on the weekends, otherwise dim sum is just made to order in the kitchen on weekdays. They also have a full food menu available as well if you aren't in the mood for dim sim, but this last visit we only ordered different dim sum dishes. Our dim sum favorites include their xiu mai, ha cao, gai lan with oyster sauce, chicken feet, deep fried shrimp ball, and many others. They recently added truffle xiu mai and xiao long bao which were very tasty as well. The truffle adds a nice richness to their normal xiu mai, and their xiao long bao came out very hot and lots of soupy goodness on the inside. Everything came out piping hot, fresh, and had a very satisfying taste. I'm drooling just thinking about the dim sum now. We'll definitely be back soon because they currently have a 2 whole lobster special, cooked how you want, for only $18.88. After the host had told me it will be a 45 min wait.. the way the manager was talking I felt like he want to eat me alive. He try to keep it professional but the tone didn't seem like it. He told me the wait was NEVER at 1hr. It's always been 1-1.5 hr long today. I told them well if the host would have told me 1.5 hr I would have left. He said I probably missed understood...? Uh no I'm for sure I didn'T . I came in right at 12. And got a table at 1:34. When we sat down we had no waiter for 5-10 min. The food came out (push cart dim sum) but no waiter to get our drinks. After the wait our waiter came and got the drink and I turn in the paper slip for dim sum everyone finish eating then our food came out. The waiter was no where to be found. He probably came to check up on us about 5 time the whole time we were there. I understand you get the gratuity on big tables and that's an automatic tip! But doesn't mean you do not service us correctly. We ARE PAYING CUSTOMERS. You get tip for the type of service you give us. We also got gratuity on a Togo order.. uh no? I visited Ocean Palace roughly a week ago on a weekday. I can safely say that going there for dim sum during an uneventful Tuesday is a mistake. Quality since the last time I've visited seems to have taken a dive--honestly, some items might as well have come out from a microwave. Bang for buck, Ocean Palace just doesn't really make the visit worth it. It was bad enough that they cut down from a traditional 4 pieces to 3 pieces on a lot of dishes; they also reduced the size of their dumplings and fried items (crab ball, shrimp ball birds nest). Our bill for 3 ended up hitting $80, which definitely felt on the pricy side for how full and satisfied we felt. The Har Gao (shrimp dumpling) didn't seem like they were fresh with skin that blistered immediately as chopsticks made contact to pick them up--but I guess that's what we get going to eat dim sum on a weekday, huh? I recall being very happy with the place at the start of the pandemic. They were one of the first restaurants that were happy to open their doors, but at the same time, they took the pandemic seriously and made appropriate accommodations for their customers--food seemed pretty fresh and cooked well. But alas, that was then, and now is now. Recommendations: X.) As enticing as the "truffle shu mai" seems, I would advise to avoid paying a hefty premium for truffle oil. X.) This place is located on the second floor on the corner of the large strip mall where the front is surrounded by a moat of unnaturally blue-green water (where patrons have unceremoniously dumped trash and garbage into the water). But look past this and head up to the 2nd floor where you'll likely have to take a number when it's at peak time. I can't opine on other food - but this cavernous location is really all about the dim sum (you'll want to be here when it's busy and the food is refreshed constantly - there'll be more variety too). I usually always do my standards, shrimp dumplings, steamed pork ribs, taro root dumplings, turnip cakes, shrimp noodle rolls, clams in black bean sauce, snow pea leaf shrimp dumplings, fried crab claws with shrimp . . . So much stuff to choose from (although the last time - they were all peddling the siu mai hard - make too many?) There's a back station to the left as well where you can take your ticket and go up to get some speciality type dishes (or you can order them from a helpful waiter too) - some of that will require you to be more adventuresome (pork blood isn't my thing). This place is no frills - plastic table cloths for quick turns, semi-friendly service which is generally all business. You are not a dimsum lover if you havent tried this place if you live in Houston or visiting. This place is a must to go :)

One of my favorite places for dim sum hands down. My favorite items (all in pictures) is the Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, shrimp xiu mai, fried taro puffs, fried shrimp ball, and the sticky rice with meat wrapped in lotus leaf.
