OED is one of the only venues around to still have a huge tent erected for outdoor dining. On cool days its only open till 5 but Monday being mild it was open for dinner so off we went with another couple for an early dinner. It was very comfortable in the tent and there was a heater blowing warm air towards the far wall. Our server Cheryl brought us the huge menu and it took awhile to peruse. We got 4 dinners which came with an awesome fresh delish salad, either regular or Greek, which is what we got. For mains we got 2 Chopped Steak with fried onions, one Trout and I got the 1/2 Roast Duck. All were good but my Duck was outstanding for the price with incred stuffing and med rare like I requested....Delish....Not to forget the complimentary Rice Pudding we all got...oh so good.... Despite sitting outside in the tent, Cheryl was available for our every need and she made the meal a feast....so glad she was taking care of us. Late, rainy summer night and we needed grub. We actually stopped here a couple days prior in desperate need of a bathroom stop, since the LI railroad was running late, something I learned is a daily routine. Anyway, we made it our stop when we returned. Dinner menu closes around 9:00pm, then they operate a late night menu. However, they were kind enough to pull a salmon special from the evening's menu for the wifey. I've acquired a fascination with spinach pie, so I jumped on that. HUGE plates and portions. $26 for the salmon, which seems expensive, but it's two meals. No complaints, and the spinach pie was terrific. Not too salty or heavy. Light, moist, consistent. There was one thing that mesmerized about this diner: the lighting. I don't know what they're using, but everything glistened. The food, people, the table (also, HUGE!) just glistened. This is not your average diner! I went to this diner for the first time the weekend and I can't believe I didn't know about it sooner. We were blown away by the decorations! Even though it was busy we were seated right away and had excellent service and attention from our waitress. Someone was always walking by our table to check on us and see if we needed anything. Was in town for a wedding and saw this place in on the way to the hotel. Went to breakfast on Saturday morning. No wait for our party of 4. Place was decorated heavily for Halloween. According to the waitress, they decorate like that for every holiday, (she was just happy she did not have to be the one who did the decorating). This place is a classic NE Diner. Obviously family owned with a lot of attention to detail. Clean. Waitress was attentive, friendly and funny. Food was very good and served in good portions. Thoroughly enjoyed our meal and our visit. A truly magical experience on Christmas Eve. Before the holiday, we decided it was too dangerous to get near family members who were exposed to Covid and we decided to go to Oconee since I knew they decorated so beautifully each Christmas. I'm sorry to say, my friends and I won't be going back to the Oconee Diner. A bunch of us are diabetic and we ask if we could get a side salad, for a extra charge, instead of fries. We were told no, we don't do that. So not only would we have to pay for our lunch, but we'd also have to pay full price for a salad. Highly disappointed! I ordered from DoorDash and spent almost $60. I ordered the chicken scampi which claimed to come with a potato, a side, vegetable, and a salad. There was no place for me to write a note to say that I would like a certain side. It was $32! I received four pieces of grilled chicken absolutely no flavor. Ya know, I'm a bit picky when it comes to a good diner and though I wanted to give Oconee more stars, I just couldn't. It's a solid place to get a meal. The food is good, but not amazing. The service is adequate but they aren't always on their game (I had to ask for butter for my pancakes three times last time I was there). We've never had to wait to be seated, but because of the decorations it always feels crowded. I admit they're fun, but it's also a bit overboard LOL It's not close enough to where I live that it's my "hometown haunt" so the fact it isn't great or terrible is really insignificant to me personally, but overall I can't say you'll be disappointed or delighted. Oconee East Diner was recommended by a friend I hadn't seen in a long time. We couldn't decide what to eat, so when in doubt, go diner. My friend promised I'd get a kick out of the decor, calling it very "me". True to her word, the place was super decorated for Valentine's Day. I love over-the-top decorations, so this diner did not disappoint. (I wish I had been able to see it for Christmas!!!!!) The menu is your standard Long Island diner menu. I didn't see anything that stood out from other diners I've visited over the years. My personal diner go-to is the cheeseburger and fries. Service was quick. We were given water and a bread basket almost immediately. We placed our orders. I didn't realize until after the burger came to the table that I hadn't been asked what type of cheese I wanted. I prefer cheddar to the given American cheese, but I'm willing to admit my fault in not remembering to ask for it directly. The cheeseburger was a standard diner cheeseburger. No frills, no surprises. Exactly what you'd expect from a Long Island diner for dinner. The fries were warm and a nice soft-crunchy texture. All in all, there is nothing about the food at Oconee that distinguishes it from any other diner. It's warm and familiar. I like the Oconee, but I wish I liked it more. There is an absolutely expansive menu and large portions waiting for anyone who orders here. Service is good although more often than not we do take out. It is a decent option for quick food when you have a group that cannot agree on anywhere else, but would enjoy what you got at a restaurant focused on a cuisine type. You would be hard pressed to find a diner more committed to decorating for the holidays (which ones? well, almost any national holidays), although it can be a bit over the top. In-dining there are TVs every few feet, giving you ample options to watch news/sports/etc. as you eat. Quality of food has been a bit hit or miss over the years. Soups are generally way too salty, and fries a bit too soft. We've had a few issues of missing items, but do recognize they do a LOT of takeout so some small % of missing items is understandable. Complimentary cookies are a nice touch, although they carry the same inconsistency of quality as the food so range between a nice sweet snack and more that goes into the garbage can. read more

The two stars on this review are because of our super kind waitress and the food was pretty good, but otherwise, I would have given it a zero because of how the owner treated us. When seating our group of 5, two of us were not there yet. They asked if all of us were there, and my friend misheard her and said yes. When we got seated, I told my friend I think they asked if we were all there and she explained that she thought they just asked if we were there. The owner came over to the table and told us that if our friends weren't there, she was going to move us to a different table. My friend explained that she misheard when they were seating us and the owner said "no you didn't" essentially calling her a liar. I spoke up and stood up for her. We explained that we were going to order for our friends and she said fine and told someone we were ready to order even though we had just gotten menus maybe 3 minutes before and were still deciding. Until our friends arrived, the hostess and the owner were looking at us and talking to each other and it felt like they were talking about us the whole time. We were extremely uncomfortable the entire time that we were there and the only reason we stayed is because our waitress was so kind and had apologized for the owner's behavior. After the lunch, we were doing the math on splitting the bill and the owner and a bunch of bus boys hovered over us until we got up and they immediately moved the table right out from under us. Had a little family meet n eat last Sunday. 4 of us met for dinner. First of all the diner always goes above & beyond on their holiday decorations. This was pre -Valentine deco. It is really a sight to see. They make it so very festive- right from the time u approach the entrance. When u enter you're happily greeted by owner Peter or another family member or staff member. Our waitress Flora was right there with a friendly greeting and menus. We began with a sumptuous mix of appys. They were soooo perfectly prepared. We had stuffed mushrooms, baked clams, broiled chicken tenders and large juicy shrimp. We (shamelessly) made pigs of ourselves with these delicious appys. Couldn't decide which was more delicious! Our meals arrived and we were too full to finish. We gladly took our wonderful entrees home to enjoy the next day. Our meal was topped off with yummy rice pudding and freshly whipped cream. The price for our decadent meals was so much less than we had anticipated it was a very pleasant surprise. The entire night was such a great time, good food, great hosts & staff-with our family. The food is tasty but, the pricing and amount of our check!!!! I don't know. Plus now, like most places I have to pay the 4% charge fee. When did we absorb their cost of doing business. It was at one time to cover the additional cost that had risen , but then they increased their prices anyway. Cookies are gone. Lollipops are gone. Pasta salad gone. And we had a $100 bill for two people. Not including tip. I don't know if it's worth the amount. And the waiter, did his job, but was sooo fast to move on, that you couldn't get a thought across. The portions are so huge I ate mine for 3 days and got full each time. They made us feel like family. I have never been disappointed with anything about this fine restaurant. My niece, her husband and their kids were completely astounded by the friendly service, the decorations and the very large delicious portions of food. I came here with a guest for Easter Day dinner. Let's start with the service. We sat there for 15 minutes before anyone approached our table. The server was busy, but seemed completely preoccupied, and not at all present. . The bread basket was full of overcooked, stale, cold rolls. That was a treat. The so-called Manhattan clam chowder was very few specks of clam and potato in tomato soup. Not even a clam broth based chowder. The salad was large chunks of iceberg mixed with wilted greens and bitter cucumbers. The roast lamb was presented on a greasy plate with lamb broth dripping off the edges of the plate, and a small plastic cup of mint jelly floating in the cold broth broth. Absolutely disgusting presentation. When I confronted the manager, she apologized but made no compensations, except to say " The staff isn't very experienced."
