**UNIQUE & HARD TO FIND JAPANESE DELICACY** **INTERESTING GHOST KITCHEN EXPERIENCE** OVERVIEW: When discussing Japanese cuisine, most everyone is familiar with sushi, ramen, tempura, teriyaki and bento - and then maybe even - donburi, and katsu. Meanwhile, individuals really in-the-know may even have an idea about Omakase. But Okonomiyaki - - what the hell is that? Well, believe it or not, Okonomiyaki is one of the most popular dishes in Japan. Even more, It's available at restaurants, street food stalls, and it's also a really popular bar snack. So now, being such a beloved Japanese dish, why the heck have most people in America, never heard of Okonomiyaki? Is it some kind of wacky food conspiracy? I certainly don't know, but let me tell you, after trying this delicious delicacy for the first time, I really cannot understand why most Japanese restaurants here don't offer it. Now I mentioned Omakase before, which in Japanese means " I leave it up to you". And this is where the restaurant's chef actually chooses what the diner will eat. But now the antonym of Omakase is Okonomiyaki, which translates to "what I want cooked." So, with Okonomiyaki, YOU choose all the different ingredients and fillings that make up this savory pancake / crepe kind of thing. So to start off, the basic ingredients are a special batter, and cabbage. And then, you choose different vegetables, noodles, eggs, meats, or seafood to add in before it's cooked. Now, to make things a little more interesting (or confusing), there are two main, different styles of Okonomiyaki. The Osaka style, has all the ingredients mixed together in the batter, and then cooked on a griddle like a big friggin frittata. But the Hiroshima Style, has all the ingredients layered, one at a time, along with a layer of Yakisoba noodles, and then griddle cooked. Then last of all, after cooking, either style is topped with Okonomiyaki sauce, Japanese mayonnaise, nori, Bonito flakes, and / or sesame seeds. Now here at Okonomi - undoubtedly, to keep things simple - all the ingredients for each Okonomiyaki are chosen by the chef. But when ordering, you can choose different toppings, such as pork, seafood, fried egg, tofu, cheese, kimchi, etc. And, vegetarian versions are also available. WHAT'S GOOD TO ORDER: - Obviously, the Okonomiyaki is going to be the must order item here. And my favorite version is the Hiroshima layered style, as it's the tastiest and most interesting one to chow down on, I feel (YMMV). - There is also a Modern Yaki version available, which is the Osaka mixed style, with an extra layer of fried noodles, and then topped with a fried egg. - The Yakisoba or Yakiudon are tasty sauteed noodle dishes, if you want something in addition to your Okonomiyaki. Comes veggie style or with pork. - The Guilty Pleasure Onigiri is a delicious Japanese flavored white rice. The portion size is small however. - The Karange Japanese style fried chicken appetizer is a tasty option also. SERVICE / DECOR: Okonomi is a ghost Kitchen, so as with the other establishments located in the Sunnyside Cloud Kitchens complex, only take-out or delivery is available, via food delivery apps like DoorDash. And there are no tables or seatings provided for customers in the building. Orders can also be placed for pick-up however, directly at the complex via a kiosk. And I can see how this option would allow an individual to order from multiple ghost kitchens during one visit. Doing this seems intriguing, as there are kitchens providing Latin food, soul food, vegan soul food, burgers, wings, and even Burmese food, which is notoriously hard to find anywhere. The pick-up ordering area is clean and decorated in a hipster sort of way. And when your order is ready, a text or notification will alert you to receive the food from the pick up counter. All in all, it's a very fun and interesting experience. PARTING THOUGHTS: It's a really good bet that you've never had the pleasure of dining on Okonomiyaki anywhere. And then maybe, a ghost kitchen is something you may have - also -never experienced. Well, if this is the case, what are you waiting for. Get off that drive through line at Arby's, and go have some food-fun tonight at Okonomi. You'll be happy you did, I promise.

Ate at their financial district food station on Friday. Had the vegetable okonimiyaki with Bonito flakes and sauces. Quite good and tasty.

Oconomi is the brain child of the queen of okonomiyaki, Kazuko San. Now with a physical location in queens for pickup and delivery, it's made the dreams come true for all of us in the tristate area who crave delicious Japanese comfort food that is okonomiyaki. AND she is offering some delicious other options like karaage (fried chicken), yaki soba, egg sandwiches, and rice balls. Everything here is a winner. Prices are more than fair and the food is incredibly delicious and hits the spot. The egg sandwiches come on her famous homemade bread. The best bread in the city (that's me being conservative. I am a super carb lover). The bread is just right with a great chewiness, soft flavorful crust, and the perfect density. The rice balls are simple and so damn good. Not yet on the menu but it will be shortly. The "guilty pleasure" onigiri is named appropriately. Pro tip, buy more than one. Be warned, this place is addicting. Just getting started now, so be sure to get in on this hidden jewel of a place before it blows up and is impossible to get, because that will be the case. This is without a doubt the best okonomiyaki in the area. Bet on it.

The wait was around 30 minutes for 4 on at 1:30p on a Sunday. By the time our meal ended, there were several empty tables. Service (4/5): Timing of the dishes was not in sync with the table (not that that bad, just noticeable). Ordering wasn't as smooth as we hoped but all in all corrected (order was wrong but was corrected when we were asked to re-confirm the order). By the time we sat, the food was out within 20 min and then the pancakes came out another 20 min after the first dish. Food (5/5): The food was outstanding! Seriously like everything from the pancakes, ramen, to the lemonade. Lunch special of Tan Tan ramen (special May 2026) and Pork Cha-Shu Bowl. Tan Tan was spectacular and was def better than the bowl. The broth had so much flavor with richness, spice, spicy level, half seasoned egg. The noodles were also a lovely bouncy chew. The pork was pretty standard with about 5 thin slices spread over a soy sauce based sauce. Omurice was very silky. The egg was nice and runny. I liked that the sauce wasn't too ketchup-flavor forward. I enjoyed the rice which had bits of meat which gave it more flavor too. Crème Anglaise Souffle Pancake - my only wish was that there was more of it because it was so good. The cream that was on top was not too heavy and the zest flavors blended surprisingly well. It comes with a little side of fresh fruit. The cake was not overly egg-y in flavor either. Lavender Lemonade - Not too tart and not too sweet. I liked the forward lavender taste.

Dashi Okume sells ... you guessed it ... dashi. They sell several kinds, and you can taste all of them there in the shop before deciding which to take home with you (I tried them all and went home with one bag of vegetable dashi and one bag of sweet shellfish dashi). They also make custom-made dashi. You can choose from around 30 ingredients - dried fish, seaweed, mushrooms, and vegetables. They grind it up and put into individual bags for you. Such a fun idea, but I thought I should try some of their pre-made dashi options before creating mine own. They also sell miso, rice, noodles, rice seasoning, seaweed, tea, and other items. I picked up some Japanese mustard, seaweed, and rice seasoning to take home with my dashi. Beyond being a great shop, they also have a cafe area where they offer a teishoku set meal - you pick your fish, which comes with tea, rice, miso soup, pickles, and sides. They also offer an omakase popup. The shop is beautiful, and the service was very friendly and helpful. I'll certainly return for more shopping but next time I plan to make a meal of it and try their teishoku set.

Simple and satisfying on the food front, for the 2 of us, the cost was about $110. So not a cheap meal, but good food. The vibe though was a little different from what I was expecting. I went in thinking restaurant and what I got was more of a market atmosphere. While you are eating, people are walking around shopping and browsing, and there are products displayed and sold throughout the space. Not exactly my ideal setting for a sit down meal, but it works well enough for a casual weekend afternoon stop. One of the highlights beyond the food were the soup broths and dried flake samples they had available to try at Dashi Okume. We worked our way through most of them and they were genuinely delicious. My wife liked them enough to buy one to use as a miso soup base at home, which says a lot. They also carry items for cats, which was a fun little surprise. As for the place itself, Dashi Okume is located on Norman Avenue and operates as a collective, meaning it is not one single business but rather a shared space where multiple different vendors and businesses come together under one roof. That explains the market within a restaurant feeling. Overall Dashi Okume is a worthwhile stop, especially if you enjoy exploring and sampling along the way. Just go in knowing it is more of a hybrid experience than a traditional sit down meal.

I stop by here before class and usually in and out in less than an hour! The waitress and owner are also really nice and they usually treat you to a small box of gum when you pay. This is AWESOME!!! so tasty, and always fresh! -Rainbow Naruto Roll: the sashimi in this is always to fresh- and I love this because it's also a lighter option if you want to save on calories. I will say with the seafood there were pieces that tasted frozen/refrigerated. But otherwise this was thoroughly enjoyable. Like I would come here again just for ramen. Each set includes miso soup, fresh sashimi of the day, uni topped tofu custard, pickled vegetables, eggplant, pickles, and your main dish. Our favorite has to be the katsu, it's probably the best value item on the menu. The miso cod was also excellent, super buttery and tasty while not being too expensive. Both options are available under $40. I would also recommend just ordering the standard Japanese rice, since it's already very filling as it is and we've never needed any of the rice with additions. Service can be a bit slow if you come later in the evening, which is understandable as it gets busier with all the set meals coming out. Ambiance is super cozy, with a sit down area that has cushions and a low table. Can't really go wrong with any spot in the restaurant.
