This place was great!! Went in for breakfast and tried the full mess. My boyfriend tried the blue plate. Each dish had various components that were all equally delicious! Hash browns were crispy and not too salted. Sausage was interestingly rolled out into a hash-brown like patty. Spinach was fresh. And hollandaise was tasty. There was one party ahead of us when we arrived and it was a short 15 minute wait to get seated. They use a system that texts your phone when your table is ready, which is convenient and gives you the freedom to roam around the various stores in close proximity. Finally! A vegan restaurant with no schtick-- just good, wholesome, simple, tasty, vegan food. It's a refreshing change from places where the menu revolves around fake meats, often packaged products designed to look and taste like the "real thing". Yuk. I had a delicious walnut loaf sandwich, and my wife had a tempeh sandwich, which she really enjoyed because it was mild in flavor (unlike a lot of tempeh). The cole slaw was delicious. All the food was very fresh. We got a cinnamon bun to go for a friend, who said it was delicious. The "to go" box was compostable paper. The environment is upbeat, casual, and hip, and the servers are delightful and seem happy at their jobs. The food feels made with love --a welcome contrast with specialty restaurants where the cooking is oriented more toward culinary acrobatics or to nutritional fads. Incredibly unthoughtful and inconsiderate customer service. I was excited to see this as an option on my delivery app and decided to give it a try with my household! Being open and Offering delivery during COVID is the only reason I gave this restaurant 2 stars instead of 1. We ordered 4 meals and a dessert. Once our food got here we realized we only had 3 meals. Last minute we had to try to scramble to get more food for our 4th person. It turns out they REFUNDED one of the meals without calling and asking if we wanted something else..? I just don't understand. Its fine if you're out of a menu item. It's also fine if you don't update your online ordering fast enough. It is absolutely not fine to just give me 3/5 of my order. Imagine we had come in to eat and they only bring out 3 peoples meals and tell the 4th person they can't eat..? I like the fried onions inside which gave it a crispy texture. The other item we had was the 1/2 waffle and jackfruit (meat substitute) and eggs. The jackfruit was okay, but kinda salty. The waffle is not light and fluffy. It's kinda dense. I got fruit on the side, but surprised they didn't cut off the cantaloupe skin. . .weird. We came here for Saturday brunch and apparently were not the only ones to have this idea. The 20 min wait wasn't bad and they were extremely busy. They had a really nice selection of options with breakfast and lunch options. We opted for the waffles and were not disappointed, they were very good with complex flavors. This would have been a resounding 5 stars if not for the service. I know they were busy but we were seated at the counter and still had trouble getting service. We had to ask twice for more water, even though we probably could have filled it up ourselves. So the food was great and we really liked the ambiance, however the service was definitely lacking. Both were great!...but the Vegan Hot was to die for.There fries are also really good. We went around 9p on a Thursday night. It was loud inside because there was a trivia game going on. You can order to go if you want to skip the noise. The wait for both our meals was about 15 mins and the restaurant was packed; I was impressed. Was so excited to check this place out!!! Ordered a scrambled egg bowl, kids pancake, and the chicken and waffles. Somewhere we missed that it was a vegetarian place, but hey we still were pumped to try it. A couple things. 1. It was frigid cold inside...and only a small space heater seemed to be warming the whole place. 2. The food was ....eh...ok. But not good. 3. The kicker to everything.... there were white hairs ( maybe animal) in both our side of jelly and on our waffle. Not our kind of food but we tried to give it a fair shot. Very frustrating when a place says they are open until 3 then you drive all the way there and find out they stop seating at 2:30 when you arrived at 2:35. If you stop seating at 2:30 then that needs to be listed on the website and perhaps "close" at 2:30 since you don't take any more sit downs after that. read more

Here I am, popping out of the Yelp lurkdom woodwork, just like an absentee parent with presents from the Dollar Tree and a tidy story about the whereabouts of my last child support check. Well, not really like that. Seriously, pay your child support, people. But I thought it was worth it to interrupt my online radio silence because I want to break a curse. In the years I've lived in my apartment, the storefront at 55th Avenue and Burnside has hosted a revolving door of cafes. No matter what they were named and who manned the counters, the restaurants always served coffee and sometimes baked goods with a low-key energy. They all disappeared months after each other, and the storefront sat unoccupied. When I walked past to the grocery store and back, I wondered what the cause could be. The rent? Its relatively obscure location next door to a nursing home? Was it after we moved here and the store owners, even the future ones, literally closed the windows and taped down the glass doors and huffed, "There goes the neighborhood?" Regardless of the origins of the curse, with A.N.D. Cafe setting up shop in the storefront and opening its doors to the public today, I want that bad mojo out of town. Of course, I'm biased. I want any business within walking distance, especially ones that give me coffee, to thrive. I want the A.N.D. Cafe's owners, Ashley and Dan from the excellent Off the Griddle cart, to do well and continue their mission of serving delectable vegetarian and vegan foods to the city. Does this cafe have what it takes to pull ahead and be the Boston Red Sox instead of the Chicago Cubs? One significant sign that the answer is affirmative: Ashley's blue corn waffles. They come with either apples and walnuts or bananas. They somehow manage to be vegan and gluten-free, if that's important to you. They're made with these steampunk-era waffle irons that Ashley says are between 50 and 60 pounds each. And they're amazing. Split one order with a friend, unless you really dislike your friend. Then send 'em to QFC for Eggos. If there's more room in your stomach, A.N.D. Cafe also serves breakfast sandwiches, paninis, and salads. The series of messy breakfast sandwiches is cool because pesto tofu can be used in place of eggs in some dishes, and whether you lean more veghead or, like me, flexatarian, there's nothing like a large, runny open-faced sandwich with bottomless mugs of Cellar Door Coffee on a day packed full of lounging plans. Why does being vegan have to be so hard? Every year or so, I take a 'meat break' for a few weeks and while I'll eat practically everything (and love my fruits and veggies), most tofu and garden burgers make me gag. Even the ones that are highly touted by other diners. So in my current meat-free state, I tried the OTG Burger from Off The Griddle at the A La Cart Food Pavillion (fancy way of saying the food cart pod on 50th and Division). And that burger rocked my world. They somehow managed to nail all the satisfying qualities of a glutinous beef burger with leeks, mushrooms and Bob's Red Mill wild and brown rice. No pre-formed patty here. The burger and fixings oozed over the side and it was packed with lettuce, tomato, grilled onion and vegan mayo on a Dave's Killer Bread bun. Bump it up to a cheeseburger and you have your choice of Tillamook chedder or Daiya vegan chedder. Completely shocked that I would actually crave a vegan burger. So thank you Off The Griddle for introducing a new item to my food pyramid. read more

We've come here twice, and on both occasions there were 30-45hr wait times. Even though the restaraunt looks half empty there was still a wait time on both occasions. Apparently alot of people are on the wait list. It's very cold at the moment, and since you can't wait to be seated within the restaraunt you should probably hang out in one of the nearby shops or your car. If you can handle cold there's some benches outside you can wait at. The first time we came we ordered a Feast Waffle and a Blue Plate, both were really tasty (the waffle was better in our opinion, not sure the sausage on the blue plate is all that good). We also ordered the special drink (Winter Wassail) which I didn't like at first taste but after the initial shock of gingery flavor, it tastes really good I'd definitely order it again. The second time we ordered the Awesome Plate and the Super Vegano Burrito. The breakfast burrito was INCREDIBLE, very tasty and huge, well worth the money. The awesome plate, in our opinion, was mediocre at best. Again, the imitation meat was pretty bad. So yeah even if the plates weren't amazing, the feast waffle and burrito are FANTASTIC though we highly recommend those! Overall a good experience. read more

The owners of Off The Griddle have a new vegan/vegetarian brick and mortar spot on a little forlorn stretch along E Burnside at around 50th (near the QFC). Let's call this a nano-restaurant. It's in what I'd normally consider a "fly over" part of Burnside. I never really stop here. But now that Skin & Bones is across the street as the anathema to this veggie fueled outpost, I have two distinct reasons to make a stop at this corner. A N D offers up a short breakfast and lunch menu that covers both sweet and savory. The list is simple and built on a core set of ingredients. There are waffles (and they look really tasty) and "mess" plates for breakfast, as well as sandwiches for lunch. The "mess" plates consist of a vegan biscuit or vegan sourdough topped with (as one patron described it) "an artistic pile" of stuff. It's either veggies or soyrizo or similar topped with either tofu or eggs. They make for a hearty and fairly healthy meal of whole foods. I dig! I've had the hot mess -- poached eggs or tofu over a house-made soyrizo and jalapeño mix atop a vegan biscuit -- as well as the veggie mess - spinach, tomato, avocado and tofu/egg atop sourdough bread. You can choose biscuit or sourdough and both are quite tasty. The fare here is not like Blossoming or Prasad in its complexity (when you see the size of the kitchen you'll understand why - it's not much bigger than that of a cart) but what they do serve is wholesome and tasty - exactly what I'm looking for sometimes. The coffee is decent and comes with plenty of free refills. This is offset by a distinctive lack of wifi - so laptoppers beware, you can't scam a whole day of free wifi and refills by sneaking in here and ordering a cup. That said, on mellow mornings they don't have any problem with you hanging out post meal, reading a book/paper, occupying a table or participating in whatever leisurely activity. Sometimes vegan and vegetarian dishes can be good, so I decided to check out A N D cafe this week. This is a wait-to-be-seated restaurant. It was toasty warm inside, a particularly good thing for a cold foggy day. I also liked that they were playing music at just the right volume. My server was great and he was helpful to me in deciding what to order. I was just going to order the "Meatloaf" sandwich, but when I saw muffins in the display case, decided to snag one of those too. The hash brown nests in the case also looked good, but I deferred sampling them to another day. I also asked for a cup of the soup of the day, which was dill pickle. Logically topped with a pickle slice, the soup, of course, had a robust dill flavor. But also, it was chili fiery, very fiery, hot. In reasonable time, the rest of my order was ready. I requested my Meatloaf sandwich to be open-faced with gravy, though it can be made close-faced with lettuce, tomato, pickle and mayo. Obviously, my sandwich didn't have meat. I'm guessing it was soy of some sort or another. The "meat" was blended with walnuts. How was it? Not bad. Good flavors and texture actually. The gravy was decent too. And the sandwich was plenty filling. I liked that my muffin was served with butter and a dark berry jam on the side. The muffin had a nice texture but only a little flavor - like just a little bit vanilla or cornbready. I was surprised to see that vodka and rum cocktails are available at A N D, but there you have it. read more

A N D is seriously yum for everyone, and especially yum for all your vegan and vegetarian brothers and sisters. You know how a tofu scramble never really sounds that appetizing? Well, this place not only makes it sound appetizing on the menu, but they also make it look yummy on the plate and taste delicious on your fork and in your mouth. Seriously - as a periodic veg/vegan myself, I don't believe I'd ever enjoyed a tofu scramble as thoroughly as I did before I had one from A N D. The atmosphere is nice and cute, too - it's everything you want from a cozy neighborhood breakfast/brunch spot, complete with darling little tables and friendly service. It is small, though, so the wait can get a tad long for the roll-out-of-bed set, but it's nothing when compared with Portland's more pretentious brunch staples. The only thing that could make this place better is if they opened earlier - as an up-before-the-sunner, waiting until 9 or 10 to eat breakfast is basically a recipe for a very hangry Sarah. Really good veggie burger patties. It's yummy and not tasteless and dry like other so called vegetarian vegan ones. Love the OTG hot veggie burger with spicy Sriracha tofu sauce! This is a cute place with friendly staff and good coffee. Let me preface my review by disclosing that I am an omnivore and eat vegetarian ever once in a while. I had the blue plate, which was 'sausage', potato 'nests' with eggs and biscuits with gravy. Each covered about 1/3 of the plate. It took three bites of the 'sausage' to figure out just what it was. It looked more like a pancake than sausage and the as sweet. Not a maple sweetness, it was just way more sweet than savory. On the third bite I finally got just a hint of sausage seasoning. While the biscuits were just ok, and the gravy had a good consistency - it tasted of nothing! No flavor. It was simply warm, moist and brown, it was just a visual component to the dish. The potato 'nest' was a puck shape, not a nest shape. But maybe 'nest' was suppose to refer to a light and airy construction. It was neither light nor airy. It was obvious that these had been cooked earlier and left in a warmer, as they were dense, stale and hard. Once again there was no flavor, no seasoning. The eggs would have funny if they weren't so sad. They were pucks that you usually only see on a McBreakfast sandwich. What I'd expect at a cheap fast food place not a Resturant charging this price. Here I would expect properly poached eggs - not ones that look like they came out of an egg poaching machine. Even with that, one was way over cooked and the other was under cooked. My take away here is that the cooks don't care. Simply following a memorized formula. They are cooking without heart and are not tasting what they are cooking. Vegetarian food is not a compromise! I don't know if I ever told you? But I'm a part-time super hero. During the summer months, a friend of mine runs a boot camp in the park. I dart over right after work and make a quick change like a better-known superperson (but in the back seat of my car; I'm no exhibitionist). We then work up a super sweat, running faster than speeding butterflies and hopping over blades of grass in single bounds. A N D cafe was EXACTLY what I was looking for. Charming, fresh, delicious. This will be our new go-to brunch spot! More details - We showed up at 10:30 on fathers' day so we expected a wait. It was about an hour but the immediate coffee and sunny day made the wait nearly pleasurable. They were out of "nests" by the time we ordered but my server was happy to make suggestions. Once we were seated or server was HAPPY to make accommodations for our picky 8 year old (if it's not shaped like Micky Mouse she's not sure it's edible). She ordered a plain blue corn waffle with toppings on the side. Daddy won the inevitable "who ordered best" challenge which was appropriate given that he was king for the day. He ordered the Super Vegano Burrito and WE WILL BE BACK to eat this again. It was OHMYGOD delicious! My Feast Waffle was a solid contender but lacked the zesty flavor of the burrito. So, we had to try it. The entire menu is all vegan, but the tofu can be substituted with poach eggs and you can add cheese to your dish. We had so much to choose from but decided on the FIESTA WAFFLE and BLUE PLATE. The FIESTA WAFFLE was perfectly cooked. I'm use to eating waffles with syrup or some type of sweetness versus savory. I would actually have to say their waffles rank up there with my honey's homemade waffles, although; I still think he makes the best! As for the BLUE PLATE, the biscuits were awesome!! Soft and very tasty. The mushroom gravy on the other hand, needs some work. The hash brown bird's nest was cute with the tofu scrambler on top. Now that's presentation using hash browns. Although the food was uniquely presented, it lacked in taste. I prefer eating at a restaurant were you don't have to add extra salt and pepper to the dish. I love AND Cafe and I always make sure to stop here when I'm visiting Portland. I love love love their mushroom melt waffle. My eyes always roll back in euphoria when I have it, so good! I also love their pumpkin cheesecake waffle, it's absolutely mouthgasmic. The portions are large so it's definitely a good idea to go in a big group and split so you can try more than one thing.
