We came here with some vegan friends visiting from out of town who insisted on trying this place. We arrived at a decent time and didn't have to wait long for a seat. The menu had us all salivating and I was thrilled to learn the waffles are all gluten free! Two of us ordered waffles and two ordered nests. After about 30 minutes of waiting for food, we smelled smoke from the kitchen and got nervous. Then several people who came in after us got their food while we continued to wait. Our food finally showed up ~45 minutes after we ordered it. The flavor of everything was great, the gluten free biscuits were pretty dry, and the waffles were VERY overcooked.. to the point it just broke when I tried to cut it. Considering all of their waffles are gluten free - I'd expect they'd have learned to turn down the temperature on their waffle iron down by now. Unfortunately, for as many incredible places as there are to eat in Portland, I have typically been let down for breakfast out. Tin Shed being the exception. read more

Came here as a new vegan and LOVED it. You'll have to try the jackfruit bacon, it was probably my favorite product. A friend and I came on a Friday morning and were able to find parking and got seated just fine, but I can definitely see there being a lengthy wait on weekends. Can't wait to come back! read more

A terrific addition to the Foster Road neighborhood. The folks are friendly and the space is cheerful. All we have had there so far (both in their previous cart incarnation and now in the restaurant) are the aptly named Messy Bessies, a big, delicious pile of everything you can think of, including potato chips and a fried egg, in sandwich form. Throw a little Aardvark Sauce on it for extra goodness. I see some varying opinions here about the fries; I thought they were delicious. read more

We were really excited to find another vegan breakfast place and decided to give it a try last Sunday. We had the worst customer service experience I have ever encountered and will absolutely not be going back, despite the fact that the food was delicious. We arrived at OTG not long after it opened on Sunday morning and were told there would be at least a 20-minute wait, which was fine. From the time we got paged that our table was ready until the time we were asked to leave was less than an hour. As soon as the ink had dried on our receipt from paying the bill, the hostess came over and said "I hate to ask you to leave, but we have others waiting." When we arrived and had to wait for over 20 minutes, there were plenty of empty tables, both inside and outside. By the time we got seated there was no wait and people were just walking in and getting seated. We were probably only at our table for 30-40 minutes, but apparently because we are fast eaters and fast payers, they no longer wanted us in their restaurant. I've never been so offended or embarrassed in a restaurant before. Upon sitting down to write this review I see another patron had a similar experience just a few days before us, so apparently this has become their standard operating procedure. We will not be going back and we will not be recommending this restaurant. Any establishment that can not appreciate their customers is not a place where I want to spend my time or money. Looking for vegan/Vegetarian? Keep looking, not worth a 20% gratuity that is taxed on to your bill. The food was ok, but the service was disappointing. Three of us were sat right away with our 3 kids, ages 5 and under. We had to then wait for the menus, then wait again for water, then wait about 20 minutes for our food. My child's grilled cheese came to the table when the rest of us were almost done with our meal. The waiter didn't check in with us for about 10 minutes after all the other food was brought out to tell us the wrong cheese was used so another sandwich was being made. He didn't offer to bring us something like maybe the apple slices that come with the sandwich while we waited. Then at check out we were told a 20% gratuity was added to our bill since we were a party over 5. Really, I think 20% is way too high for a small informal café, also to count 2 one year olds and a 5 year old as part of a party over 5? Wow! Then to expect 20% with the service given us. So disappointed. The food was mediocre too. I will not return, nor would I recommend it. The prices were very high too. There are more Vegan and vegetarian options in Portland that don't add a 20% gratuity, offer better prices and service. Keep looking.... read more

I was just introduced to Off The Griddle (and the Messy Bessy) earlier this week. This place is amazing. Granted, I've only ordered the Messy Bessy but it was everything it was cracked up to be. At $8, it's not expensive but it's not particularly cheap either. It is, however, well worth it. The Messy Bessy is less of a hamburger and more of a garden burger on steroids. May update this but may not. We're sitting in our car waiting for a friend before going in. Because we got here early we decided to go get seats. Outside is a notice saying we only seat once everyone has arrived. Well they just lost some business because we would have ordered drinks while waiting which would have made our bill and tips larger. Now we're waiting back in the car with a negative impression. I guess they're so busy they don't have to care much about their customers. Must be a portland thing because this doesn't exist in Cali and I've seen this at multiple restaurants here. Edit: good service good food giving 4* I highly recommend this place for quality of food. Very tasty. I think they should adjust their policy and judge on a case by case basis with seating. More on the food. Really a great balance with the flavor on those waffles. There is really nothing else like this place. It is really special. It has an eclectic menu, sure to please every type of eater. I've taken my plain n simple meat eater boyfriend and he got the bluecorn waffles add choco chips and loved it. I've taken my not-too-adventurous-with-food grandma and she got some sort of hashbrown goodness and was very pleased. My favorite is the SW Hash, add avocado, but everything here is just seasoned to absolutely perfection, perfectly textured, perfect portions, and just FUN somehow! I love that with the breakfast burrito, they lay it down and drizzle it with sauce. mm mmm! I am vegan and like that they are very clear on the menu by saying 'everything is vegan except for eggs and tillamook cheddar'. All vegans know how annoying and confusing it is when menus are not clear about this! The main gal who serves me, friends, and fam when I go is this chill redhead who always makes sure we are set and refilled at the table and just makes the experience nice and relaxing with her friendly service. I've tried a bunch of other goodies on the menu, including the bufflalo sandwich, which was so awesomely filling and I have never had fresher bread. All in all, this place is perfect; a place to go to when you want a meal and dining experience with no dissapointments! The only downside is the small place, but any wait for a table is beyond worth it! read more

My wife and I went vegetarian for Lent and Off The Griddle was a place I kept reading about to try. I've had 3 different vegetarian burgers in the last 6 weeks and this was definitely the best. I had the Hot O.T.G. and the wife had the veggie bacon cheeseburger. The hot had a good kick and the tempah bacon was a good tasting substitute if you are foregoing meat. Price and burger size were very good. In a see of great food cart options Off The Griddle is a definite must try. read more

Their biscuts and gravy are to die for. I like to think of myself as a connoisseur of biscuits and gravy and these are by far the best. This place is so cute! I had the feast waffle and meatloaf Benedict both with tofu scramble and a Bloody Mary. The feast waffle was 5 stars and by far one of the best vegan gf brunch items I've ever had! The gravy was so flavorful and the texture was perfectly thick but not gluey. The waffle was fluffy and had no signs of chewy gluey or graininess, as most GF vegan waffles do. The meatloaf Benedict was just ok in my opinion, probably worth 3 stars. The meatloaf wasn't super flavorful, the biscuit wasn't super light or fluffy. The Bloody Mary was awesome. I could definitely tell it's a homemade bloody mix with fresh ingredients. The service was fine. It was a random weekday morning, but the restaurant was very busy and there were only two servers, so I definitely can sympathize with the servers for rushing around just to get food on the tables. I'm not vegan, but I love having good vegan options and I will definitely be back for that waffle. read more

The Hot Nest is my go to and it is amazing! I went for the special last time and was not disappointed. The selection of GF vegan yumminess abounds and the presentation and detail in each was totally unexpected at this price point. I have been going here for Sunday brunch for weeks now when I am in town and this little place is a dream come true. Few things in life are perfect this place is as good as it gets. Staff extremely friendly even when they are slammed which is always. I love this place... tempted to move in next door! I joke that there may be NO REAL vegetarians or VEGANS in Portland... For all the bragging people do about their diets to show how hip they are, how many Portland "vegans" or "vegetarians" just need their neighbor to grill some salmon to show their real refueling preferences? Thats all fine but for anyone really looking for a safe place to eat this place just rocks! It seems at least one server there is actually a conscious, real vegan - maybe the only one in Portland! Having been vegetarian no eggs (yuk!) since 1985 and knowing I always feel WAY better without cheese or dairy this place is a perfect haven for refueling with the comfort food of my dreams! Met a good friend earlier today at A N D Cafe. We thought it was a coffee house, but it's a cafe. Parking was very difficult, especially for me since I am disabled and use a walker. We met there at 12:15, and there were LOTS of people -- as in all the indoor tables were full. Since the temps were in the high 80s, indoors was really the only option. When we were seated, a young toddler near us was literally screaming in his high chair. Not just shrieking loudly but screaming so loudly and at such a high pitch, I had to put my fingers in my ears. It was actually physically painful. Neither the staff nor the parents did anything to help the rest of us talk with each other and enjoy a nice meal. So those are the negatives. BUT the food was pretty darn good. We both enjoyed a concoction with macha green tea, agave, and lemonade--very refreshing in the heat. According to my friend, the side of braised greens she ordered was delicious; I could see that the portion size was generous. I ordered a whole grain waffle with strawberries. It, too, was delicious but not very hot. My tab came to $13.50, a sum I consider to be on the high side; my friend's tab for the side of greens and tea concoction was $7.50. Peresonally, I will not return to A N D (my friend said the same thing), especially with Tabor Tavern right across the street. BUT...diners who don't mind a crowded, noisy, vegan, busy neighborhood cafe, lacking adequate parking, may very well enjoy the A N D scene. read more
