Great... and not just for beach food. We were at Bethany for a week and ate exclusively at popular local hangouts along or very near the water. Some meals were OK, and others were dreadful. Nothing was good. Until we stopped at this place on our way out of town. My wife had charred octopus, and it was outstanding. I had their shrimp Po' Boy, filled with large shrimp, fried to crunchy deliciousness. However, don't expect to pick the thing up; this is a knife-and-fork kind of sandwich. I know we'll be back to Bethany and just as sure we'll stop in to Off the Hook for at least one meal while we're there. read more

It is about principles, service, and integrity. That is the reason for lower stars. Off The Hook website states they have 1/2 priced entrees from Tuesday to Thursdays. However, once we were seated, we found out that on Christmas week this was not honored. They said there was a said beside the door. First of all, it is not about the money, it is about principal and service. Our waitress was a lovely young lady. She actually brought over the manager per the request of myself and my husband. He apologized and added by saying it is hard to change the website, I find that hard to believe, he then offered a round of drinks, we do not drink, he said dessert would be on him​. When the bill came only one dessert was paid for. If a restaurant advertises specials, they should be honored to show that they have integrity and care about a customer, whether local or not. It is only about principle. We also listened to another table talk about the same situation. Having knowledge of the food industry, this was not handled in the most professional way that an upscale restaurant should do. It is the whole package for long term continued success. TLDR: Do not trust these people, about anything that isn't written down. Our very charming waiter was deceptive about the house special and never disclosed that it was nearly the price of two entrees. Despite the food being good, we left our meal feeling lied to, feeling like these people were one step away from thievery. The food was pretty good, but our waiter was deceptive. He advertised the house special as being a surf and turf that combined the filet mignon with some of their seafood. He pointed out the filet on the menu, and started talking about the surf and turf combo without ever mentioning the price. No special menu was ever provided, so the only price we had to compare it to was the price of the filet. One member of my party even asked to substitute a side. The waiter said it would simply be $2 more, and she happily agreed, not knowing that the special was already $25 more than the filet: he conveniently left that part out. When the check came, we paid it, not wanting to make a scene, but it was disgusting treatment. The price wasn't worth the combo either, the surf part of the combo included the surf part of the entree, but we could have ordered the full entree with sides included for only $9 more. read more

Another first time try, mainly due to the fact that every summer we come there is over an hour wait. Which is a pretty good sign if you ask me! We sat outside so as of now I am not an expert on the inside but it looked very nice. The service was fine and everyone worked in cohesion there. Our table started with the crab dip which was so good. A lot of crab and just the right amount of cheese. I found out that their crackers are made in house which gave them amazing flavor. Most of the table went with the fish tacos (if you choose fish it's fried cod, the other option is shrimp). I got the Blackened Swordfish which was heavenly. I 100% recommend getting this as the fish was juicy and the kale was just perfection. Another hit at the table was the wings, they were cooked just right and have a wonderful glaze on them. On our first night in Bethany Beach we took fellow Yelper's recommendations and tried Off The Hook. This upscale seafood place has a good vibe. While we waited for our table, we enjoyed cocktails at the full service bar complete with wine list, top shelf liquor and a specialty cocktail menu. Our server John was friendly and attentive. The focaccia and seasoned EVO arrived promptly. The focaccia was fresh and delicious and the EVO was as seasoned nicely and had a full body flavor. Fried Calamari appetizer was an excellent choice, tender and crispy drizzled with a spicy mayo. The BLACKENED SWORDFISH was tender and nicely seasoned and paired well with the kale sauté and hummus. The shrimp tacos were ok but nothing to write home about. The pico was bland and there was not quite enough spicy Mayo on the shrimp to provide flavor. There were 4 nice size crunchy shrimp in each taco but only real flavor came from the pickled onions. The dirt rice was very good with chorizo sausage it had a nice sweet heat flavor. Overall high marks for presentation, wait staff and atmosphere. The meal aside from the average shrimp tacos was quite good and I would highly recommend trying Off The Hook for a very satisfying meal. I would even consider going back and choosing from one of the many other seafood offerings, all which looked pretty amazing. No dessert tonight, we were too full! read more

It's sad when a good restaurant tries a bit too hard. Going to the coast means seafood. The Chesapeake is amazing since not only does it have fabulous seafood, it also has a long, rich heritage of preparing and serving it simply and deliciously. The food at Off the Hook is good, but it seems like there are added bits that probably aren't needed. The tacos have either deep fried shrimp or fish, when grilled or broiled would have suited them better. They also include both cole slaw and pickled onions which hide the taste of the shrimp rather than complement it. They're served with Dirty Rice, which would be nice on it's own, but seems like an odd complement for seafood tacos. Fish and Chips are generous with the chips, and the batter is light and crunchy. I'm not exactly sure what the pesto was on the fries since I couldn't taste anything other than fried potatoes. The crusted Mahi was also good, but was more New Orleans than Chesapeake, which is too bad, because you couldn't really taste the fish rather than the seasoning, peppers, onions, and other items. Service was good, and the ambiance was also pleasant (the very bright LED lamps on the table can be easily switched off) It feels like this is a place that wants to make a great impression, but doesn't quite know how to do it. read more

Went to Off the Hook back on Fourth of July weekend with my partner and his family for our vacation "fancy" dinner. On a weekend night, they sat us outside almost immediately, but I watched a few families wait 30+ minutes for indoor seating. The way the neighboring buildings lined up, there was ample shade during our early evening meal, which made for a great July-at-the-beach dinner experience. It seemed like they have a daily-changing menu, just one page. 3/5 of us ordered the Crab Cakes, served on a bed of couscous salad. The crab cakes were fist sized and extremely delicious, but the other two in my party found multiple large shell fragments (half the size of a penny) in their cakes. The manager came out and apologized, and a few weeks later, they mailed a gift card. I also ordered a pretty cocktail off the menu, but I don't remember which one. The waitress was very knowledgeable and patient, and she was quite familiar with the food and drink menus, happy to offer suggestions for my father in law's wine. read more

First time in Bethany. We got in late and were looking for a decent place to eat that was still open. OTH had good reviews and the menu looked appetizing, so we decided to give it a whirl. The good: We enjoyed the food. I got the fish and chips, which had generous portions of both. The fish was moist and nicely battered, and the pesto fries were tasty. My fiancé got the fish tacos, which were bigger than you often see at restaurants; he liked them and thought the pickled onions on top added good flavor. Our waitress was attentive, but not overly so, and kind. The not so good: I think things could have been a little cleaner. A quick pass over the floor with a carpet sweeper or a damp rag across the table lamp and the seats would have gone a long way. Worse: As a waitress (not ours) gave us some ketchup, the cap fell off the bottle onto the floor; she picked it up and put it on our table right next to my plate. Presumably, the cap was ultimately put back on the bottle without being cleaned. Also: Watch out for the 3.5% "convenience fee" for using a credit card. Overall: The food was great and filling, so we don't regret coming. It's clearly a popular place as it was still quite busy close to closing, and I can see why people like it. The food was just really really good. The appetizers were massive so if you are a party of two, three appetizers would be more than enough to feel STUFFED. Here is what we ordered: 1. Fish Tacos- These were bomb and LARGE, definitely enough for one person. The pickled onions were awesome making you go in for the next bite and the next. 2. Crab Dip- Large for the size so good value as a shareable. Was there a lot of crab? No. Was it large enough to justify the price? Yes. 3. Octopus-You must order this. The octopus was spectacular and extremely tender with these delicious fried potatoes and a chimichurri sauce. To die for. 4. Mussels in Tomato Broth: If you are a mussel fan this is definitely an order. The mussels were BEAUTIFULLY cooked and delicate. A treatise to mussels. I will say the tomato broth was a bit runny and lacked some depth for me...so would love to see a white wine garlic cream broth with the mussels instead hit the menu. My girlfriend and I went to Off the Hook for a late lunch after driving down to Bethany. We were seated promptly since the restaurant wasn't particularly crowded at 3pm, but still had a decent crowd. The waiter took our order and brought out drinks. We split a calamari appetizer and a shrimp Po Boy sandwich. Both the calamari and the shrimp were really tasty, but the calamari was a bit too greasy in my opinion and the side of fries had like negative seasoning on it. The food was also a bit pricier than we expected it to be - like $18+ for seafood sandwiches. The ambiance and aesthetic of this restaurant was great, however I had one gripe. Since we just drove from the DMV to Bethany (a 3ish hour drive for us) and went right here, I really had to go to the bathroom to pee. There were only 2 unisex bathrooms that were both in use for the first 15 minutes of arriving! Maybe I went the wrong time, but for the size of this place, it would've been nice to have another bathroom. Also they had a good parking lot which is rare for many places in the area. For tasty but pricy food with a good ambiance and good service, I'd recommend stopping by! read more

Great happy hour and their off season specials during the week are such a good deal. The fish and chips are excellent and I rarely eat fried food. The breading was easy to take off and the fish was awesome, not greasy like your typical fish and chips you normally get. Try the fresh salmon, halibut, or the steak. Have in the past ordered the ceviche for an appetizer but the portion was super small for the price. The shrimp appetizer is delish and of course the bread. Get there early for happy hour as it fills up fast in the bar area, and roll into dinner, it's a small restaurant. The ambience is better than average and the place is very clean. It's one of my go to's in the area during off season but pricey during the season and way too crowded for my liking. You really can't go wrong with any of the Hook restaurants. The Tuna was so flavorful that I wanted to lick the plate but the best part was the service...the hostess, bartender and my server, David, were so sweet and attentive to a solo diner. My son's fries were extremely oily. The calamari itself was really good but it had a mayo sauce that messed up the flavor and made the dish fall apart. Putting the sauce on the side will make it easier. The mahi was good but the grits that came with it was cold, not well prepared and lost among the sauce. Pure perfection. Hooked properties have stolen my heart. We decided to drive up here from Ocean City to check out a few more of the Hooked sister restaurants. Came on a weekday for lunch, no wait and seated immediately. LOVE the decor here. Super beachy, clean and modern. Great color theme with the white and turquoise. Love the open atmosphere with open kitchen. Very family-friendly. Clean high chairs. They provide coloring pages, crayons and water (cups with straws) for our kids. Staff is terrific. Our waiter was superb. Food was delicious. Pan seared scallops - my goodness. They really know their scallops. Perfectly seared with great flavor. And those cheddar grits....divine! The smoked bacon really brings this dish to life. A bit saucy for me but wow, it is good. Jumbo crab cakes - Two giant lumps of crabby goodness sitting on top of fried green tomato and slaw. Crisp exterior with loads of meat. Salmon - such a unique dish. Crispy salmon with citrus fruits (orange and grapefruit) and greens. Refreshing! Whatever Hooked is doing, they are doing it right. We were pretty hesitant about coming here due to the small menu and the fact that they don't take reservations. However, given all the good reviews, we decided to give it a try. I can honestly say that all of the good reviews are really accurate. We arrived around 6pm on a Friday night and only had to wait a few minutes before they had a table for us. The inside is much bigger than it appears from the outside. They also do have some outdoor seating and seats at the bar. We were seated at a high top table. The kitchen is completely open and our table shared the half wall with the kitchen. It was a little strange to be that close to the kitchen, but I enjoyed seeing all the food prepared. They have a separate menu with the fish specials, the veggie bowl special, the desserts and appetizers. They bring out fresh, fluffy bread that's warm for your table. Our orders included: lobster pasta, fish & chips and the mahi mahi special. The lobster pasta had just the right balance of lobster to pasta. It had peas and cherry tomatoes. However, there was a bit too much bacon. The fish and chips dish was incredible. The breading was so light and the portion was generous. A can't miss. The mahi mahi was one of the best dishes I have had in a really long time. Since I don't eat chorizo, I opted for the sides that come with the chicken entree. This included a sauce, broccolini and polenta. The polenta was so flavorful, it was an explosion in my mouth. The sauce on the fish was so good and the portion was perfect. The broccolini was too thick and I would have liked some skinner pieces. Overall, the food is so delicious, fresh, flavorful and the portions are really good. However, I must say that one negative part of our experience was our waitress. She was extremely young and perhaps very nervous. We asked if we could change one of the entree orders after she had just entered it in and she made it seem like it was a big hassle to change it. I didn't like feeling uncomfortable due to this. With the fish specials, the base and sides all contained chorizo, which was honestly really surprising. As I don't eat meat, I asked our waitress what else they could sub instead of the chorizo options. She gave a vague answer and said anything else.Then at one point, we had to ask the other waiter, who was serving the table next to us, if he could refill our water glasses since ours were not refilled. I know every place is short on staff but it's not that difficult to act friendly towards the customer. We (3 adults) decided to try again this past Labor Day weekend as we were staying in the area. We didn't have reservations but only had a short wait time before being seated. We were seated at a high top table near the bar which was a little noisy with the bar patrons but manageable. We ordered seafood entrees that were very good and a bottle of wine that was moderately priced. The service was very good and our waitress was very informative, attentive and a pleasure to interact with. Afterwards we agreed that the dining experience was much better this time and would consider dining there next summer when we return for vacation. read more

I was so surprised when I walked in, they renovated the place, nicely decorated and took over the space next door and it's twice the size of their previous place. They also have the $30 3 course dinner special for Fridays and the surprise is you pick from their regular menu for your three courses, appetizer/salad, entree and dessert, all full portion. Unlike other places that have a fixed menu Drinks: Fat Tire draft beers, rose and Pinot noir. Appetizers - 2 salads, Town & Dock calamari, boom boom shrimp - all tasty and enjoyed by all Entree: shrimp & grits, Chilean sea bass and Cioppino. All the dishes were fresh, delicious and large portions. We were full and unable to have dessert so they wrapped it up for us to take home (key lime pie, triple chocolate brownie & chocolate terrine) . The service was exception also. We had dinner a couple of weeks ago. The tables were appropriately distanced. We made it just before the end of happy hour, and they have great drink and food options on special! We started with the Brussels Sprouts. They were perfectly cooked with a zesty slightly spicy sauce. For my main course, I had the oysters Rockefeller and Bibb salad. The oysters were a bit small and flavor was just average. The Bibb salad was very fresh and delicious, but quite overdressed. The pickled onions are a nice topping!
