First and foremost, the level to which you enjoy this place is completely dependent on which one of the people behind the bar is serving you. That being said, Justin (I think that is his name!!) is fantastic. He's conversational, pours generously, and explains the wines fabulously. The other bartenders aren't bad they're just a lot more curt which feels like a let down coming off that energy. It can also be hard to flag someone down and I think cuz of the way the place was built something about the acoustics makes it so it can get incredibly loud. I do want to take a sec and mention their food pop ups which are always a treat and I think they announce them on their insta. Trash burgers especially was delicious and handing out free cookies like how can you not love that! Oh and they have one of my favorites wines, the Riesling from Union Sacre, on tap and I can usually only get it in Paso Robles so yay for that!! Overall I have really liked my experiences here every time I've been, which is 4 or 5 times now, and I'm always excited to have an excuse to return. read more

Well Heavens to Betsy, isn't this just a charmer. My son Fritter was rather parched, and I don't usually let him drink until the sun goes down, but given it was his birthday, I decided to let him splurge. Wouldn't you know it, we were out of refreshments at the house, so I put his walker in the car and we made an evening of it. I accidentally turned on the voice doohicky in the car, Fritter mentioned something something offhand, and this wonderful establishment went into the car's mapping directions! Technology these days, I just miss my rotary phone! It was a lot easier when milk was delivered, and the news was trustworthy. But let me tell you, the people at offhand are surely trustworthy. The young man behind the bar, Jackson, reminded me of my late husband, God rest his soul. Behind those glasses, he had a loving gaze and a knowledge about every bottle of wine! I'm not sure who, (too many bottles of wine at this point!), but someone helped me to my car, Fritter must have been with because he was home when I woke up, but I highly recommend this fine establishment! Big fan of the Offhand's daytime persona, the Please Enjoy coffee bar, so when Brandoni Pepperoni had a nighttime pop up it seemed like a no brainer to ditch the bean for the grape. The vibe, as always, is very relaxed and unpretentious. The service was very accommodating as they concocted a virgin mule for my 20 year old son. Our server was also more than happy to recommend a good local red that nicely complemented our pie from Brandoni. All told, the Offhand/Please Enjoy continues to be a very welcome addition to SM's east side. It's a great spot to do some well deserved unwinding. read more

Organic wine! No pesticides. No GMO or modified grapes. Almost, No sulfites (less than 10 ppm). Owner & staff are very knowledgeable about organic wines, and especially familiar with all those offered. I enjoy wine & it was interesting & informative to learn more about organically produced wines. I did the sampling "flight" They were extremely helpful explaining the basic process for preparing organic wines, the particular methods for the wines I tasted, and the ways different methods affect the finished wine. I bought a couple bottles of the light, refreshing white/blush; a blend with some Pinot Grigio elements. Side note: Clinical research shows NO correlation of Sulfites to causing hangovers. Alcohol and dehydration is the cause of hangover symptoms. *By day this venue serves coffee. By night it offers organic wine. read more

We came here over the holidays, and it was extremely loud. Maybe it was just a busy night, but it was difficult to have a conversation. There are lots of hard surfaces in the space, including metal chairs that add to the sound issue. We would have sat outside to get away from the noise, but there were no heat lamps. My partner ordered two drinks and two sandwiches at the bar for us. She was handed the drinks and told the food would be brought out shortly. She paid. We took our drinks to an outside table. Sometime later, I went back inside and ordered a second drink. When I paid, the bartender asked if everything was okay with the service. I said yes, and asked why he asked. He said, "Because your partner didn't leave a tip." I said, "It's probably because she paid before we experienced the service. I'll make up for it now." I thought his behavior was unprofessional and rude. Not to mention--it's entirely disingenuous to ask me if the reason my partner didn't tip is because something's amiss with the service when he knows damn well she signed the check before any service was provided. Give my sweet butt a break. Don't ask people to pay and sign a check and expect a tip if no service has been provided yet. If I tip 20%, and then the service sucks, can I go back and ask for 5% back? Nope. I think tipping is absolutely necessary but this system of tipping prior to services rendered is a faulty system. Trust your patrons to tip after they can fairly evaluate the service provided. read more

Seriously disappointed with this location tonight and a very unprofessional staff member. My friends and I have supported this location since its' opening and have been very eager for it to do well. We have frequented it many times and introduced lots of friends and neighbors to it. Well no more! Unfortunately, on our arrival tonight I had an altercation on the patio with a very belligerent patron who was extremely hostile when I simply asked her if she was using the nearby umbrella. She snapped at us that she was and then her male companion made some nasty comment at us. When I asked him what he said the angry female jumped up out of her seat and literally attacked me. She was pointing her finger at me and yelling like a crazy person. I asked her to stop wagging her finger and me but she continued yelling at me in anger. She was literally out of control. She stormed off and returned with the Bar Tender who without even trying to de-escalate the situation between us ordered my friend and I to leave. Why did he not try to establish what had happened? Why did he order US to leave? I suspect in my gut that the angry woman went inside and embellished her complaint and accused me of saying something racist to her which I did not. Why would he come out and order us to leave without even asking what had occurred. After all we were patrons too and as mentioned earlier returning customers. This woman and her anger was out of control and he did not witness how close she got into my face yelling at me. Instead he made up his mind that I was at fault and probably fell for her and her persecution complex. It's not a loss to not go to there again however if management reads this let me suggest that you educate your staff to try and troubleshoot the issue and not order two women who have supported you since day one NOT to return. I was close to being attacked by this angry woman over simply asking her if she was using the umbrella next to her. This Staff member did not see her almost attacking me and getting within one inch of my face shouting like a crazy person. I was about to call the Police before the Bar Tender came out ordering us to leave. I will not be recommending your location going forward or your orange wine. read more

Their grilled cheese is excellent and the wines are tasty, though they don't pack a lot of punch (they're on the subtler side in my opinion). I liked the orange wine on the happy hour menu the best, but personally prefer robust reds. The staff are friendly and the ambiance starts as a chill place to catch up and ramps up to more lively and chatty atmosphere where it would be easy to meet people. Offhand Wine Bar is a great addition to what is my favorite up and coming part of Santa Monica. It's away from the craziness of Main St./Downtown SM. They carry an amazing selection of natural wines and the bartender Justin is super knowledgable about everything. Not pretentious. That's a big deal for a wine bar. They make you feel welcome and you can learn something about wine without feeling like you are being lectured by a snobby sommelier. Def a recommend! read more
